Since I am not from around the area, I came here based off reviews. First off, I had amazing service. I came alone due to me being on a business trip and wanted to spoil myself a bit. I did not know what to expect because the area seemed like upscale IMO and I was a little hesitant I would be treated a certain way. I was not . The place was very clean and nice, also has a fancy feel to it. The food i had tasted amazing, but the rice was a little on the salty side for me. I am not sure if its a southern food thing ( I am from the other side of the U.S) but, seasoned rice has been salty to me all over GA. I would definitely recommend this place to someone though. The only problem with Citizen Soul is that if we return we will only ever want one server. So I'm actually very behind in posting reviews of various restaurants and hotels, but there is the occasional experience that you feel obligated to review immediately because of the occasion and this is one of those times. The food we ordered (short rib empanadas, shishito peppers, Brussels sprouts, cheese fritters, and shrimp in coconut curry sauce) was all wonderful, but what made the evening unforgettable was our server, Valeria. I was one of five ladies who went to Citizen Soul on a Friday evening for a bachelorette party. We arrived at the restaurant at different times but were immediately seated. We were given our menus and water. As soon as we were ready to order drinks and appetizers, we met our server, Valeria. She promptly made us all feel welcome and special. We were waiting for one more person, so we waited to order entrees, but since we had another reservation later in the evening, asked her how long we could safely wait before we ordered. She told us that with the current number of people in the restaurant that our entrees could be expected to arrive in 8-10 minutes, which was quite useful information (and accurate). Most of us were new to this restaurant and had a few questions about the entree choices, and Valeria was so helpful in answering our questions. It's sadly not that infrequent that a server will reply "if you like chicken you should get the chicken and if you like steak, you should get the steak". But Valeria carefully described the different dishes and what she thought we would like about each one. She did not try to steer us toward the more expensive choices and in fact, when we ordered a vegetable for the table, asked her whether one would be enough, and she gave it some consideration and assured us that one would be enough. Our food arrived exactly as she promised and all of it was delicious. She checked on us frequently and came to ask if we needed boxes for leftovers (which in my experience rarely gets offered), then took our plates to box them for us. Come to think of it, she did not even try to sell us a dessert, but I expect it was because she recognized that we were running short of time. Knowing that we had a later reservation, she came in a timely fashion to ask how we wanted the check to be divided. We did not make it easy for her. It was going to be divided several different ways with two guests combined and the appetizers divided as well. She didn't bat an eyelash and brought out the various checks. The totals were all correct despite the complexity of the order and checks. Through it all, her demeanor was everything you would want a restaurant worker to have. She was kind, friendly, professional, and helpful. Even her posture was elegant and her facial expressions welcoming. She spent several minutes speaking with us, taking photos for us, and never made us feel rushed, but I expect she was working quite hard because our dinner proceeded at the ideal pace. Valeria's maturity was, in my view, astonishing given her young age, and I suspect that she is probably studying for some other profession, but if you read this review and go to Citizen Soul, watch for this young lady, because I guarantee that you will not be disappointed with your evening. read more

Delicious food and drinks. Friendly service even if our server appeared to disappear for stretches of time. Not busy on a Saturday evening but we did go in for a very early dinner before a concert. The menu is 90% gluten free, aside from a few appetizers. Shishito peppers was a great starter option and pimento cheese balls were pretty good also. I opted for the burger with duck fat fries and it was pretty dang tasty. My celiac spouse was able to have fried chicken which rarely happens. Def plenty on the menu to check out on future visits. While the service was exceptional, the value for the money was very POOR! The portion sizes for both the appetizers and entrees were disappointingly small, especially for the VERY HIGH prices (entrees from $28-60). The burrata appetizer was so small, we thought someone had already eaten it! The burrata was no bigger than my thumb! Two of us had the duck confit entree. Again, the portion of the protein was embarrassing small! I don't mind paying $50 for an entree, but I expect to be full or close to full after eating it. That is NOT the case with any of the six entrees our group had. There are too many great restaurants in the Alpharetta/Roswell area now to "settle" for mediocre, which is what we experienced. On the second night of a recent business trip to Alpharetta, I came with several coworkers and colleagues to Citizen Soul. My colleagues wife, who came, recommended it because she was told about it by her daughter. So we all decided to go try it. Place is very southern, very relaxed, but still sophisticated in appearance. We quickly were taken to our table and we put in a drink order. I decided to try the Howard's Old Fashioned, which is a not your typical old fashioned. It's made with Duck-washed Henery McKenna Bourbon, Maple and Bitters. It was wonderful with a very distinctive taste. We shared some apps but my highlight was the main course of Braised Angus Short Rib, which came roasted garlic potato puree and sorghum heirloom root vegetables in a Calabrian chimichurri. It was so beautifully presented, almost felt bad digging into it. That feeling did not last long because it was so delicious and tender! We enjoyed our time there... drinking, eating and laughing. I'd give this restaurant 3.5 stars. It was good, not the best I've ever had. There are a few things I would change. I think maybe they are trying a little too hard with the plating. The bacon pieces in my scallop dish were huge. Good, but huge. Hard to eat and cut. I think the subtraction of the raisins and sweet sauce plus small diced bacon pieces from the same bacon crisped up and pan seared would be amazing. The flatbread needs more salinity, anchovy in the vinegar would do the trick. All in all not bad, but definitely over priced for what you get. I have had 1&2 stars Michelin restaurant experience at half that price. The wine they are charging $20 a glass for on the menu is itself, is only a $20 bottle of wine at the local Kroger. The duck was a bit rubbery, over cooked and bland. I ordered beignets, but unfortunately, the dough was raw in the middle and I don't know what they tasted like. The sticky toffee pudding bread was good. I really liked that a lot. Over all, I'd say it wasn't bad, however, I probably won't go back because of the prices. read more

Downtown Alpharetta is an incredible place, full of fun, commerce, families, businesses, restaurants. Some have come and gone, many aer fine and capable and one stands out. It is exactly what you want in a great place. Citizen Soul is at the edge of the bustle. It reflects what I imagine is its owner - humble, hardworking, and lets the quality speak for itself. This review is cumulative of a dozen visits since our first time several years ago, but it's time to update. We went for Valentine's Day this evening. This place still screams California in the best way -Cool vibe, laid back but nice, oozing quality, Go to French Laundry, L' Auberge Soliel - you see the roots. Walk in and it's subtle not loud. It's elegant but not stuffy. It's not a huge menu but just right. A great restaurant starts at the roots, how they source, how they anticipate a guest experience, how they hire, how they train, how they retain. You can tell people have been here a while, they work at all three places the owner has, they like the place, they like serving people. That shows through. You can't fake these experiences, they are in the fabric. The restaurants that come and go, try to add this on top - it doesn't work. This place works. Let me tell you some things. - We secured the ever-coveted 4"45 spot for dinner:) It's busy Thanksgiving weekend. Something happened to our Resy reservation, but no worries, they fit us in The front desk is cool and the people are nice, cool, funny. Seated and greeted, the server (nice gentleman, red hair), was laid back but attentive, he knew how to do this. The wine list is complete - and exactly what you want in a wine list - a continuum from around the world, across price points, curated, with a nod to California, Could it lean towards Oregon more? Sure, but I quibble. We had a special bottle - Stewart Tartan (2017), the corkage is 25 bucks - so nice and reasonable - not a big deal. But next time, I am ordering off the list - so much good stuff to choose from Their bartenders have been top notch over the years. The Reposado Margarita and Old Fashined - just perfect, mellow and well mixed. Perfectly Pear Martini was very nice. Tuna Tartare app was so nice - mixed with some pickled what nots. Nicely plated. Crab and Lemongrass soup, Butter lettuce salad was great. We have had the OKRA and Bacon apps before, and was so tempting, but not today - we look forward to the introduction of oysters one day here - I have not seen those so much. This place has serious game with the entrees, they are cooked perfectly, paired nicely and while sides are awesome (Scalloped Potatoes), you don't really need them, plenty of food on the plate. I had the halibut - it was in a stew of sorts that I inhaled. My wife had the Black Grouper - it looked great. Small but thoughtful desert menu. It's priced fairly - not cheap but does not break the bank. We came happy, we stayed happy and we left happy, and will be back so often. I love places like this. My wife had the salmon, I had the shrimp. We both loved the our dinner. The fish was cooked perfectly with a crisp crust and moist interior. The grits were a rich and flavorful base. My shrimp had a wonderful mix of flavors from the lite coconut curry, the bite of the jalapeños and the crisp of the fried wonton wrapper. The server was extremely knowledgeable and helped steer our choices when we asked for direction. My only strike was having to sit directly in front of a junked up wine cellar. The atmosphere has potential, but they have let it become a bit run down and I don't think management even notices the lack of sparkle that this place once had. read more

The garlic shrimp was off the chain. Perfect flavor and the rice was done just right to add the proper texture without getting gooey. Brussel sprouts were super charred, which is excellent and the acids from the pickled onions cut through the char to add a sweetness I didn't expect. Burrata was good but the bread that came with it was incredible. Also had the shishito peppers, and as much as I like spicy a few of them were My only complaint was it was 8:00 pm when we got there so the dinner rush was over and the hostess said they were too full to seat us so we had to sit at the bar, which is fine. But there were plenty of tables open and it would have made work conversation much easier sitting across from each other. We came here as a date night. We had Miles as our waiter, and he was great! It seemed super busy around the area the night that we came, but we figured out why (through Miles' help) as there were a lot of kids or youngin's all dressed up. We thought what it was and finally we found out that it was homecoming weekend so we got to see a lot of dressed up kids going out to eat. Yes, it made me feel super old. Anyways, to the food! For appetizers, we did get a cheese board and one of the cheese were unpasteurized, but Miles kindly went to the chef and made sure to know which cheeses were good and whether they were pasteurized and unpasteurized so that was super good. For the main, I ordered the braised short rib. It was alright, but I do have to mention that the sauce was on point. With the main I also got a side of the duck fries to share, but I think they came out a bit soggy but overall it wasn't too bad. Not enough good things to say!! My mom and I discovered this place a month ago and we've already been back again since. Our server was also the bartender, Adrian, and his service is phenomenal every time! Adrian tends to his customers and makes excellent recommendations. The restaurant itself with beautiful decor is located in downtown Alpharetta. I'd say you get a good price point with the dishes and amount of food! Now the food...we were blown away by the fusion of flavors served on each plate. The dishes are served with combinations of food that you usually wouldn't expect. I've been to Citizen Soul twice now and both times have been a great experience. I love the atmosphere inside and the service is good. Their entrees shine here, desserts are ones I would pass. - Burrata (3/5): cheese portion itself was smaller than expected for the price, but loved the salted dressing. Bread would have been way better if it was buttered and charred. - Octopus (2:5): just ok, a bit tough. - Duck Confit (10/5): I've ordered this both times I've eaten here- it's that good. Crispy and juicy duck with sweet potato, crunchy Brussel sprouts and walnuts. Absolutely fantastic. - Hanger Steak (4/5): Steak has a great crust and the creamed cauliflower was delicious. - Beignets (1/5): We barely touched this. Thick, doughy bread with cinnamon sugar. This restaurant is by far the best restaurant in Downtown Alpharetta! I'd recommend making a reservation before coming for sure. We've come here a number of times and truly enjoyed it every time! There's free parking in the garage. We ordered the Pimento Cheese balls a couple times and they were delicious with a little zing of taste! As an entree, I've ordered the Short rib multiple times and it's my absolute favorite!! It's perfectly cooked and seasoned with mashed potatoes. For dessert, my favorite is the bread pudding!! Wonderful date ambiance! I visited here on a Friday night after making reservations via OpenTable. The ambiance inside is really nice and perfect for a date night! I tried the mai tai which was 12$ and the beet salad 15$. There were several options for vegetarian items (salad and a few apps) the entrees were all non vegetarian. The entree cost is around 30+$. I ate here with a party of 8 for a birthday last week and we loved it! I definitely will be coming back. The menu is kind of scary at first, but the staff was super nice and helpful recommending stuff. We always do a tapas style appetizer round so we ordered the Brussel sprouts, harissa cauliflower, and the pimento cheese fritters. We loved all 3 so much, they were simple items but they were elevated and super tasty. I ordered the burger and really enjoyed it and the fries that came with it. There is a nice slice of pork belly on the burger which was really unique. The sauce that comes with it was also really good. I also got a side of the kale salad, which was a Caesar inspired and actually really good even though I didn't care for the grits "croutons." Others at the table got the salmon, the fried chicken, and the pork tenderloin which they enjoyed. I only tasted the fried chicken out of those and it was really delicious, I loved the breading. Since it was a birthday, our server gave us a complimentary dessert tray that was phenomenal. The bread pudding was the best I've ever had and the "Reese's cup" was amazing. He also gave us a glass of dessert wine and some other drinks to try as we ate the dessert. It was a very cool restaurant in a really cool area. I enjoyed the ambiance and it was a very nice place. Wonderful location in downtown Alpharetta for a weekend night dinner and drinks. Things you should know: I. PARKING There's a free, public parking garage nearby for the entire downtown area. Your car will be safe there and the walk is brief to Citizen Soul. II. SERVICE Our waiter was kind and accommodating. A food experience that will have your taste buds doing back flips!! I have been soooo very impressed with some of the places I have eaten since I have moved to Alpharetta. Citizen Soul is one that impressed me immensely! It is in the downtown area and from the outside doesn't look like much. (Hint if you're looking fir oar king go just past the building and into the mall area... it is a short walk and if you park along the side of the hill, those shops will be closed after 6, you're really quite close) There are inside and outside tables... if the weather is good I suggest the outside. The menu is not large but the selections are fantastic! I started with a Manhattan... here they infuse the whisky with their own blend of spices so one batch to the next is always different. This batch was extraordinary! It was ohhhh my Goddie to dam Hottie!! Man this was the best Manhattan I have ever had! I had three of them, I think, and actually got the last one ever for that batch! It was sad to drink the last, but man they could have bottled this stuff and sold it for a mint! I would have bought it for sure. I can't wait to try a different batch. For starters we had the Brussels. Now I literally have only started eating Brussels in the last two years... but I get them everywhere they have them... I like most that I have tried but only a few place have I loved them... this is one of the loves! They were sweet and savory, crispy, but not too done, and just flat out delightful! If you come here you have to have the Brussels! For my entree I had the pork tenderloin... it was a good portion of the most tender pork laid over mash, paired with picketed onions and cherry tomatoes in a loving sauce. It was pure culinary heaven! I ate every morsel. I swear if I wouldn't have felt like a fool I would have licked the plate!! It was so VERY VERY GOOD! My wife's dish was equally delectable... she had the short ribs. They were tender juicy and unworldly. Literally it would be hard to choose between the two dishes... you really could not go wrong either way. However no matter which one you do choose be sure to add a side of the duck fat fries!! These are addictive! I mean I'm Jones'n fir some more right now... The service was fantastic... our waiter was a delight... kind, attentive and his recommendations were spot on. Walking around Old Alpharetta and stopped into Citizen Soul bar for a lunch, they offer a few specials at the bar. Nice selection of wines and full bar. Enjoyed a rose to start ($11) and a patty melt with fried pimento cheese and their classic duck fries. The aioli sauce is a nice complement and treat - don't count calories here. Super satisfying. Service, ambiance, and location are all excellent. What I didnt enjoy was the food. This is strictly a personal opinion. I ordered the bacon for the appetizer, and the burger for dinner. Both meals tasted bland, uninspired, and soulless. In fact, the entire menu is basic American food. The bacon came out as a chuck of bacon, lots of fat, yikes. The burger was one gigantic "meh." I paid over $100 for dinner for two. For those prices, I expect *chef's kiss.* instead, I felt like I got one step up from Taco Mac. Again, service, ambience and location are excellent. Stopped in Saturday around 1p or so without a reservation and although they were moderately busy we were seated right away. This place is a gem. The staff was friendly enough, but Reese was superb. He was attentive and very helpful even suggesting that we check out their sister location since we enjoyed so much. We ordered the $18 red wine grilled octopus and although I do not usually enjoy this dish as my spouse I really did hear. The addition of the thickly cut bacon wasn't my favorite, but the truffle white bean puree was phenomenal. I'd highly suggest giving this starter a try. My spouse also ordered the $22 BBQ duck chopped salad (wasn't my fav although I didn't expect it to be based on the flavor profile) and the $29 60 south salmon cooked medium and it was very good. The combination of fresh peppers, creamed corn, and tomatillos paired together so well. We'd order this again for sure. I ordered the $18 soul burger prepared medium and it was perfect minus the braised bacon. The $9 Zardetto Prosecco was my cocktail of choice and I enjoyed both glasses.
