We were hoping for a good barbeque place to finally open in Cary. After eating here, we are still waiting. The pulled pork was not flavorful and the ribs were on the tough side. The side dishes were loaded with sugar. If you have quality food you should not have to hide the flavor with sugar. On the plus side the beer was cold. I visited City Barbeque in Cary, NC today. Am I glad I did?!! Anna, DeeDee, Cindi, and the guys behind the counter [owners/managers, I think] were ~all~ absolutely AMAZING. Southern hospitality at its BEST. One would have thought I was royalty from the treatment we got. And the food was BEYOND great. Had the pulled chicken on bun w/ a slice of their mile-high chocolate cake. Every bite was unbelievably good!!! The cake tasted as delicious & fresh, as if I had just taken it out of my own oven minutes before. And I don't remember ever having better chicken barbecue. I heartily endorse this restaurant. The City Barbeque folks always greet you when you enter the store and wait on you with cheer and a smile. I have been here at least 8 time in the last 2 to 3 months and this is the case every time. They always go out of their way to make sure you are happy with your order before yo walk away from the counter. This seems to be the case even if they are crazy busy which is many times I am there. I am from Arizona visiting daughter and grandkids and we stopped in for a late lunch ordering a family platter. We had brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork and chicken with beans, potato salad and hush puppies. All were excellent and had some food left over to take home. Service is great and restaurant is clean. I come here with my husband to the point where we are regulars now. The manager's really proud of the place and should be. The food is unlike anywhere else if you want good barbeque and just about anything else on the menu. The corn pudding is still an addiction of mine, but the potato salad, beans, and sweet sauce they use are all amazing. I may one day chance the mac and cheese again but I haven't yet. I can't stress how important the "home cooked" feel of the food is. read more

Up until discovering City BBQ "Danny's" was my previous favorite for the Raleigh area. But when combining the quality of the sides with the incredible brisket at City I have to officially switch to these guys as my current favorite. I ordered the two meat combo on my last visit and got pulled pork and brisket. It's extremely hard to find good brisket outside of the midwest but City Barbecue easily challenges the best I've ever had from Texas. I filled up on the brisket and my baked beans and fried okra sides so I had to take the pulled pork home with me. Their baked beans are incredibly good and the okra definitely didn't come out of the freezer. I'll be returning again and again and again! read more

The restaurant was packed for Veteran's Day 2014, but service was still fast and accurate and the food was delicious (as always). Angela was working the register and she was incredibly patient and personable. She thanked my husband multiple times for his service and gave us a free slice of cake on her. First time to City BBQ. I'm not typically in Cary (I live in Raleigh) but found myself there around lunch time today and decided to stop in for a sandwich. I grew up in Wilson NC and was raised on Eastern NC chopped BBQ from Parkers, Bills BBQ, B's bbq, Wilbers, Kings. Obviously your pork isn't like theirs, but it was really good, just different. So was the slaw. I really liked the potato salad too. Liked the variety of different sauces although I'm a dyed in the wool vinegar based sauce guy. Atmosphere was good and the joint was clean. I'd certainly go back and try the other menu items. I was in the restaurant business many many years. From washing dishes, waiting tables, cooking, bartending etc at various restaurants to closing manager at Angus Barn to managing the 42nd St Oyster Bar. I've been around food and enjoy nothing better than trying out a new place. Really liked your food. read more

We have been to City BBQ a few times now, and the food is really good. The quality is about equal to Danny's on Cary/54. The pulled pork is very tender, but not as hot (temp) as expected. The fries are soft and probably too plentiful, the hushpuppies have just the right balance of corn and onion, and are not overly sweet like some nearby restaurants. They also have a good selection of sauces at the table. The banana pudding is a good way to finish off a meal. read more

I went in expecting that the staff would be in a hurry, or a little rude since it was 5 minutes before closing time. I was pleasantly surprised to find everyone helpful and friendly. I was allowed to sample the meats, and take my time figuring out what I wanted to order. One young lady was cleaning the dining room, but made sure to let me know that it was still okay to dine in if I wanted. Another lady grabbed her umbrella and walked me to my car so that I wouldn't have to go into the pouring rain. I had wonderful service and interactions with 3 different young ladies while there. I appreciate the excellent customer service, as I had driven from Durham, NC, and it was my first visit to your establishment. My boyfriend is a big fan of the Garner store, and we drove to Cary just so I could try City Barbecue for the first time. The food was still hot by the time I arrived home with it, and it was delicious. I will definitely be back! read more

I no longer live in North Carolina so when I visit I like to eat good BBQ. I appreciated the high number of choices they offer - I could have the tomato-based sauce I prefer while my friend could eat the east Carolina vinegar sauce she likes best. And I appreciated the generous number of samples to help me decide what to order. The staff was very friendly and seemed to genuinely enjoy their work. I wanted to leave a monetary tip but was told they don't take tips, but instead I should take their survey and express my thoughts. And if you publish my comments on the Internet, I hope you'll also share that I, and the friends I was with, would pay higher prices if it meant the staff got closer to a good, living wage. I ordered a brisket and turkey combo. My wife ordered the pulled pork and ribs. Sides were coleslaw, beans and corn bread. Sides were excellant. However, unlike many other restaurants, the sides will cost you extra. The pulled pork, ribs and brisket were overcooked and very dry. Turkey was actually good. The smoking was on the light side, but tasty. The restaurant did not have table service. Meals are self ordered at the register. Atmosphere is nostalgic, quaint and simple. The outside seating was an added bonus. The staff was courtious and friendly. One of my pet peeves is going to a restaurant where tables are self cleaned and require you to put your dirty plates in an unsanitary dish pan. The worse thing is putting your plates in the dish pan (as required) and coming out with somebody elses leftovers on your arm or sleeve. Just the thought of sticking my hand in something like this is unsettling. I know a lot of restaurants do this; its just wrong! PLEASE STOP! I am trying BBQ spots in town because I'm trying to find "favorite places" as I am new to the area. I'll say this much, it's really unfortunate that the other place I was headed to was closed tonight because I'll never go there... No need... City's is LEGIT! The customer service was dead on, the amount of food you get for the price you pay is incredible, and most of all... THE. FOOD. IS. AMAZING! I can't think of anything else I've given five stars, but this was certainly worth it. I would save all of my grocery money just to eat at this place. I had pulled pork, green beans, brisket, and corn pudding... PHE-NO-MENAL! Additionally, I was given a piece of chocolate cake that made me want to call Duncan Hines just to tell them about it. My husband, son and I ate at City Barbecue today for my birthday celebration. We had never been but were excited to try their barbecue and sides. What a fantastic choice for a celebration!! The brisket was so moist and tender while the pulled pork was so flavorful and delicious. My husband reported that the smoked sausage and turkey on his City Sampler was as awesome the beef brisket and pork also on the platter. We had sides of potato salad, green beans with bacom, baked beans, greens with pork, sliced cucumbers and onions, macaroni and cheese and gumbo. Wow!! They were so good. One could make a meal of the vegetables if they don't want meat. Sweet tea was superior to most in restaurants---not too sweet but sweet enough---with a good tea flavor. The staff complimented us with banana pudding, chocolate cake and cobbler for dessert. They were all fabulous and we definitely will be returning to City Barbecue again. The first time I visited I had the brisket. I didn't like it and made no effort to try the food again until today. I decided to go on my lunch break and ordered a pulled pork sandwich to go. This was about about 3pm. There was only one person in front of me at the counter. I stood right by the pickup counter and watched quite a few people come in after me and get their food before me. I was completely ignored. I ended up waiting almost 30 mins before I had to leave. Even the customer that had been waiting behind me looked at me across the restaurant and shook his head because he had actually asked them where was my food. I waited as long as I could before heading back to work just to see how long it would take but had decided I wasn't going to eat the sandwich afterall because of the dozen flies that were all over the counter and food prep area. Luckily I had my useless receipt to help shoo them away. I will never give this place a third chance. It was horrible service and the flies were too numerous to be ignored. The only good thing that came from it was I didn't eat the food and risk getting sick from all of the flies. When the General Manager calls me back, I will relay the experience but I will not be returning even at the offer of free food. read more
