Food here is amazing. Service is equally as good. The restaurant is small but so cozy, and more than friendly.....kind of like extended family. I actually got emotional over the pork BBQ the 1st time I had it. Lets say I'm very far away from being a kid, but the taste and flavor reminded me of being a kid and having fresh homemade BBQ from my grandad. I am born and raised here in a part of town between Raleigh, and Durham. I always felt I'ved had the best in both cities growing up and as an adult. Somehow this place escaped me till a couple of months ago. I've now been 3 or 4 times, and food has been the same each time which is amazing! All my kids, and mom feel the say way. This is a hidden gem unless you already know!! Also first time I went there an older gentleman chatted me up. He made me feel more welcome. He was like me but he already know about this place for a while and was getting a kick out of me just stumbling onto the establishment. Ole Time Barbeque is now on our must list when visiting Raleigh. We stopped by for the first time and were blown away by how delicious everything was and how friendly and helpful the staff was. I ordered a combo plate of chicken pastry and bbq pork, with sides of fried okra and potato salad. Everything was served piping hot, just as it should be. The Chicken Pastry (chicken and dumplings) had wonderful flavor and was comfort food at its finest with thick and wide chewy noodle dumplings. So often chicken and dumpling dishes can be overly salty but Ole Time Barbecue's was perfectly seasoned. The barbecue pork also had great flavor and also was seasoned perfectly, though unfortunately I can't do even the most mild of spicy, so even tho there were only a few red pepper flakes, they made it a little bit challenging for me to eat. The fried okra was cooked and seasoned perfectly and not at all oily and the potato salad was also really tasty. I also tasted their coleslaw and mac and cheese from Hubs dinner and both were delicious as well. Also loved their sweet tea, I got it 25% sweet . The biggest surprise was the large basket of tasty hush puppies brought to our table the minute we sat down, and refilled. Also delicious and seasoned perfectly. The location is very homey and diner like, with just a handful of tables so you may have to wait, though luckily we didn't. The only thing that was a bit disappointing was they served their sides in styrofoam containers versus reusable dishes like they use for their main courses. Oh my, this was a great find on our visit to Raleigh. Down home and authentic, this place oozes country charm. We were happy to find a table on a Saturday night. Our server was so sweet and helpful, greeting us immediately with a basket of complimentary hush puppies. How cool was that? Between the three of us, we each had a different combo platter and were happy to share. The pork BBQ was moist and firm and the chicken pastry was the definition of comfort food. I loved the Brunswick stew (a first time experience for this visitor from the Pacific Northwest). As for sides, between the three of us, we sampled the cole slaw, baked beans, Mac & cheese and ocra. All were flavorful and spot on. From the large portions, there was no room left to try one (or more) of the tempting desserts, but we might have to find a way to stop back before leaving town. Well, for one, my server was rude. I asked for water with no ice, and I heard her mock my request to another waitress. Second, I got the combination, pulled pork and ribs platter. The ribs were good, but the pulled pork had TOO much vinegar in it. You could distinctly taste it - mind you, this is with no barbecue sauce on the pulled pork whatsoever. Their barbecue sauce was way too vinegary as well. The boiled cabbage was as expected but the potato salad had soooooooooo much sugar in it, once again, you could tell, clearly unnecessary. After 33 years of business in a small little building, the place was quaint. Limited seating, but at least it was uncomfortable. My wife and I would drive over an hour and fifteen minutes to eat at this restaurant. It is small and busy, but a popular and fun place to eat. The servings are generous. The food is cooked perfectly. The hush puppies with butter are unforgettably good. We like the meat dishes, but are just as likely to order a vegetable plate. The French fries are great. The prices are some of the most reasonable in the Raleigh area. The waitresses are very busy, but attentive and efficient. The ambiance is very appropriate for a rather historic barbecue dining experience. We usually order some extra food to take back home for consumption during the following day. Collards were excellent and I'm willing to bet that the okra didn't come frozen. It tasted fresh. One person in our party had a burger and found it enjoyable. I have come here several times and always had good, fast service and great food. A family run business. This is a very small diner so it's best to come at a non traditional time. They have a few tables and some stools at the counter. Decor is all pigs! Even in the clean bathroom! They have pork and chicken bbq but have other offerings too. A daily special every day during the week except Wednesday. Monday special is the meatloaf with 2 sides. I just about fell off the stool when she sat the plate down. A huge piece of meatloaf! This will be 3 meals for me!!! It was very good, as were the green beans and mashed potatoes. Even if you don't like hush puppies, try these. They are delicious and come to you even before you order. Came here with friends and love it! We got food to go, I ordered a chicken pastry, one of my friends had bbq ribs and the other had bbq. The cole slaw was 1/2 vinegar and mayo based, the Brunswick stew was 5/5 in my opinion. The only thing that threw us off is it didn't come with any bbq sauce , (BYOB? -bring your own bbq?) I'm sure we had to ask for it but we didn't think to ask for it at the time, so unfortunately it could've made the experience better for us. First, everyone working here is ridiculously nice and friendly!!! I'm visiting from Seattle and originally from NY so this type of hospitality is hard to come by these days. It's a very quaint and cozy diner style restaurant. Some booths and a small bar with stool seating. I was here for eastern style NC BBQ, chopped pork! I had the pork plate with mac and cheese and beans. The beans were AMAZING!! Mac was nice and creamy. For me, the vinegar based pork was good but I believe I'm more of a sweet sauce bbq guy, that being said the meat was juicy and delicious. And all meals come with a side of hush puppies that were hot and fresh, sweet and cake like, loved them. I'd highly recommend stopping in if you're in town, jealous of the locals who get to eat here all the time! read more

Came here for dinner recently during my tour of Research Triangle BBQ spots and really enjoyed my meal :) First, the restaurant is pretty small, and there's not a ton of parking outside. I came at kind of a weird time so I did manage to find a parking spot though. I had ordered my food to-go via the phone a few minutes before, and it was ready promptly when I arrived, so that was nice. I got the BBQ pork plate, while my wife got the fried chicken plate (with dark meat!). First, my sides were delicious - I really enjoyed my boiled cabbage and mashed potatoes. The pork wasn't bad but maybe not my favorite in the area. My wife loved her fried chicken and sides, so I'm maybe boosting the rating a bit because of that. I tried the barbecue sauce but found it to vinegary for my taste. My wife tried their hot sauce and thought it was good. Our opinions on the food: The fried chicken was crispy on the outside but lacked flavor and was a bit dry. The green beans while cooked with bacon, which we love, but also lacked flavor. The coleslaw was very good. The chopped pork sandwich was just okay because I couldn't find a sauce I liked. The Mac-n-cheese was also just okay. They even offered a student discount! 2 meals ended up being just short of $20! If you are looking for some true North Carolina barbecue with all the fixings? This is it. The space is small so expect a wait of you want to sit but they do take out, so that's an option if you are in a rush. The waitresses are super efficient, hurrying to get everyone seated and quick to bring you drinks and hush puppies, and always sweet. I'm gluten free but husband says these are some of the best hush puppies he has ever had. If I'm there for lunch I typically order the large barbecue plate with two sides. Collards are solid and French fries are typical but always cooked perfectly. Brunswick stew and baked beans are good, too. But the standout is the pork.
