Close to Texas as it gets! Worth the trip and I'll be back. I got the brisket sandwich abs green beans! Epic!

We had dined here once before - the occasion was a Yelp Elite event prior to the restaurant opening to the public - and sampled several menu items. We were extremely impressed with the food then. And we are extremely impressed with the food now. If you've seen my reviews of other BBQ joints, you know that I tip my 10-gallon hat towards authentic Texas-style 'cue. And this place gets it right (I know, I know, not everyone is fond of this slow-smoked style ... and I prefer well-marbled brisket over lean/dry any day). On this visit, the Missus and I ordered beef brisket and turkey breast sandwiches on Texas toast. The toast could have spent more time on the griddle but was worth the modest upcharge. Our sandwiches were so juicy and flavorful, sauce wasn't needed. A can of Buffalo Creek Brewing's Double IPA paired well with the subtly smoked meats. Sides at most BBQ joints seem ordinary compared to theirs. We rate their fresh-cut fries, baked beans with brisket, and corn bread among the best. The portions are ginormous and the prices are quite reasonable. The staff, particularly the cashier who took our order, were proficient and pleasant. read more

We had a terrible experience at City BBQ in Deerfield, IL last Saturday (9/7). We were supposed to be curbside pick-up, but after parking and no response, my husband went inside. He was handed our pre-ordered dinner for 8-10 people. When he took it, the handles on the bag broke while in the store. He asked for help and they handed him another bag. We got home and the plastic containers holding the slaw, potato salad, and pork were shattered and the food was inedible. We called and the manager gave us $20.00 off our $100.00+ meal. I contacted City BBQ corporate and after a week have not heard back. We are former Columbus, Ohio residents and used to love City BBQ. We could not be more disappointed and would not go back, nor would we encourage anyone to patronize City BBQ. Such poor customer service! read more

I ordered the 3 meat sampler and portions have been reduced significantly. It seemed like the 2 meat sampler I used to order. The quality of the food overall was mediocre. This is a trend I've seen in struggling businesses. Unfortunately I won't be returning. read more

I ordered takeout from this location and my food was hot and fresh and delicious! I got a combo meal with pulled pork, Mac n cheese, and corn pudding. It was accompanied by fresh buns and fresh cornbread. My absolute favorite was the corn pudding which was sweet and moist (sorry) and had the perfect amount of corn kernels. A perfect bbq side dish! I also enjoyed the cornbread while it was fresh and warm, but felt that it did not hold up well for leftovers the next day. The pulled pork was also perfectly cooked and had a nice outer crust. Overall, great meal. And we ended the meal with the banana pudding which was loaded with freshly sliced bananas and perfectly salted caramel in the bottom of the dish! read more

This place is kind of far for my work lunch, but when I have a little extra time it's worth the drive. It's a pain to access from northbound on Waukegan and not that much easier eastbound on Lake Cook...but I found a way. Costs a bit more cash too, but barbecue always does. They have a sandwich lunch option, basically a smaller and cheaper version of the regular-menu sandwiches. We tried City Barbecue for the first time today and loved it! We got two sandwiches, both served on Texas toast, with fries, baked beans and potato salad. Everything was really good! We even liked their barbecue sauce. We're not ready to dine in yet so we had a picnic and really enjoyed. The only complaint was that my daughter ordered a bottle of ginger ale and we discovered orange soda in our bag instead. My daughter doesn't like orange soda. At first I thought it was an oversight, but I went back to exchange it and the guy told me they didn't have ginger ale in the bottle. It was an online order so they should have called us. But I didn't make a big deal since we were close by when we went back. He gave me a large cup for the fountain drinks. Other than that, we liked this place and would return. read more

The briskets and pork ribs here are super good! So glad to have a city barbeque open near us. The best thing is 40% OFF RIBS every Tuesday. The ribs are done excellent, so gooey, soft, tender and addictive! The briskets you can choose either the fatty parts or the lean parts. We definitely went all in and chose the fatty parts and it was with no regrets. It is melt in your mouth good! The service here is really fast and the staff helpful and professional. After ordering the meals were prepared promptly. City Barbeque will definitely be a popular go to restaurant for our family. I've been to this location three times and found the food to be tasty twice. Unfortunately, they seem to run out of food on a regular basis. Having experienced this issue the first two times, I called ahead at dinnertime for the third visit and was given reassurance. When I arrived 30 minutes later they had run out of several items on the menu including ribs and I walked out after the staff was unhelpful and unconcerned. It is insulting to their customers that this seems to be a common occurrence, so much so that they even warn potential customers on their corporate website. I've also been disappointed in the attitude of the staff at the cash registers on all my visits. They have not been very helpful to me in making food recommendations while sorting through a diverse menu. In addition, they could do a better job refilling and disinfecting the condiments and bbq sauce bottles and cleaning the dining room. Others have commented about the quality of the food, when you can get it, so I won't go into that. Simply put this is a restaurant I would like to continue to frequent if they just respected their customers more. So I have one review of city BBQ , this is my second one. This time I was enticed by a smoked turkey dip sandwich. Like a French dip , but turkey. Sound simple but actually very delicious. The turkey was moist and nicely smoked . They gave me a bbq sauce to dip it in , delicious again. The sandwich also had grilled onions and melted cheese. Don't pass this one up . When I went into the restaurant to pick up my food, I was a little underwhelmed. I didnt get the sense that the restaurant was very clean or organized. The floors were a bit sticky, and it was kind of dreary inside. However, when I got home and tried the food, it was a total game changer. The pulled pork and the barbecue sauce was scrumptious, and the corn pudding (which I didnt think I would like at first) was really tasty. The mac and cheese was pretty standard, nothing amazing, but not bad either. The cornbread was also fresh out of the oven which was awesome. Food here is very good but the service can be really spotty. The first problem is the staff. I know you're not hiring Harvard graduates at City Barbecue, but the person at your order counter is not the sharpest tool in the shed. Second, there is literally one person covering the pick up counter as well as the catering/carry out counter. The poor girl there was scrambling around like crazy! You should have at least 1-2 extra people to pitch in and help. Third, we came in around 5:30pm on a Sunday and you all must have had some tremendous carry out orders or you did some crazy lunch business but to be out of turkey and chicken tenders and chocolate milk for the kids before the dinner rush seems a bit unusual. The kids with us had to suffice with their side order and a juice box, as they were not offered an alternative entree when we learned about there being no more chicken tenders. Also, we couldn't collect our rewards points because the reciept tells you to scan the barcode on your reciept. Your reciepts don't have a barcode on them! Great service and great ribs! If youre in the area and can do a pick up or delivery right from city barbeques website its cheaper than any other delivery app. I highly recommend the full slab of ribs! Cant go wrong with brush fire, original, or their sweet city bbq sauce. We love their sauces so much were always asking for extras on the side. The ribs are super tender and juicy. My family loves their ribs and also their sides. Our go to is their mac and cheese and brisket chili! I also recommend their peach cobbler and banana pudding. I recently found out that they have a rib special on tuesday! Well definitely be back for their great customer service and some more ribs. Yum! read more

A coworker recommended this place because his buddy catered this to their most recent party. I'm always wary of BBQ not from Texas but I tried to go into this one open minded. The smoky smell of BBQ hit me right as I walked in and I was convinced that this place would have a decent shot to impress me. Two of my buddies and I pulled in to get the motherload order which has a sampler of All the meats as well as 6 sides. Usually this would feed 4-6 but the three of us decided to take on the challenge. City Barbecue is a great choice in the Deerfield area for some BBQ. They are located off Lake Cook Road and are very easy to find, and get parking, They are a relatively new business to the area and they are in expansion mode. Pro Tip: Download their app if this is your first time there and you will get $5 off your order. City has quite a lot of choices to choose from. I usually go with one of my friends and we split the judge's sampler, which I think represents good value. For around $29, you get pulled pork, half slab of ribs, brisket, almost 1/2 a chicken, two sides, cornbread, and Texas toast. City has their BBQ sauces displayed out and they have quite the variety to choose from. Their original is very good and I also like their Bourbon but they have quite the selection so it is fun to sample all of the sauces to determine which one you think would be best. Take home boxes are laid out really nicely when you can't finish your food. They also sell their BBQ sauce as well in case you loved what they have to offer.. Overall, this is a pretty popular lunch spot in Deerfield with all of the businesses in the area. Either missing items, completely incorrect orders, or more recently, they claim they never got the order (yet seem to know what my name is, and what exactly I was supposed to get) They always put the blame on me, and don't seem the least bit interested in getting it right, so I hear you, CityBBQ.... you don't want my business so I won't give it to you anymore. It's a work in progress as far as service goes, but overall it's worth the frustratingly long waits, the system that's not a system for prepping carryout orders, and when it's really, really busy, and if you're lucky, you'll witness some less than genteel behavior among the impatient customers. I ordered online and they told me to show up and pick up my food at 6:30. I arrived at 6:15, hoping MAYBE the order might possibly be ready. It wasn't. Let's hope it's ready by 6:30. It wasn't. A sea of humanity, and a City Barbeque employee, greeted me at the door. She directed me to the carryout area. I felt I made the right decision to order ahead. It wasn't. There were several large brown paper bags on the carryout counter and various sized plastic containers of side dishes next to the bags. The bags and containers of meats are added last to the bag and are carried from the kitchen, sometimes by the armload. What happens behind the counter is a cacophony of inefficiency, confusion, learning on the fly, and standing around doing nothing but looking confused. This contributes to the mood of the people in front of the counter. It was an unpleasant mix of anger, impatience, snide commentary, and side dish containers knocked to the floor. 6:30 came and went. I haven't even been able to tell the person at the register that I'm here to pick up my order. The waiting area around the carryout line resembles a herding pen at the cattle auction. Noisy, and lots of milling about aimlessly. Finally, I talk to the cash register person and check in. They staple my order receipt to the large, brown grocery bag. It's progress. Remember the card game, "Three Card Monte"? It was the way they were shuffling the small containers of salads and side dishes around the counter, furiously checking to make sure the right side dishes go into the right bag...reminded me of Three Card Monte. They ran out of Peach Cobbler. I requested the chocolate cake as a substitute. It's 6:45. My order is finally assembled. As I drove home I thought to myself what are the odds they forgot something, or screwed something up. Fortunately, the only foul up was the missing hush puppies. Now, on to the food itself... Hits: brisket, mac and cheese, cornbread. Misses: smoked sausage, French fries. The brisket is very tender, and has a nice smokey flavor. The mac and cheese had nice texture and was tasty. Cornbread was moist and delicious. The smoked sausage was a bit chewy. French fries were a bit soggy, but they sat out a bit before I ate them. I'm confident this place, after it irons out some service issues, will succeed. I'll give it a few more weeks before I go back, or in the meantime, I may try one of their other locations. read more

Visited here for the first time today. The food was pretty good but for myself and my husband; who got one sandwich and a kids meal, the price was astonishing. So let me start with the meats, which I give a solid 4 stars. We got the Judge's sampler, which included a 1/4 chicken, half slab of ribs, pulled pork, and brisket. Everything had a great flavor. I think the ribs could have used a little longer on the smoker to render more fully, and the brisket was just a little bit dry. These are both very minor complaints and would not stop me from returning. The sides had a few more issues and I would give them more of a 3 1/2 stars. The corn pudding was tasty, as was the cornbread. The Texas toast was fine but nothing special. The Mac and cheese uses something like a pimento cheese which is a no go for me. The biggest issue was with the special Citrus Pecan Slaw. The slaw was incredibly overdressed and watery, which made the pecans very mushy and the whole salad pretty inedible. Came here with one of my girlfriends for a bite after the movies and sadly this place was a huge miss for us. At the start of it all we were dealt with the most uninterested cashier at front who didn't bother greeting anyone nor seemed like she cared that we had a couple of questions about the menu. Our questions were met with a loud "huh?" And answered with attitude. This should've been indicative of the rest of our visit but against our better judgement and the factor of such positive reviews on Yelp, we gave it a chance. After ordering we looked for some seats. The floors were noticeably greasy and the place needed a bit of work overall as far as cleanliness goes. As I got my fountain drink a guy who seemed like he might be a manager since he was wearing a polo, was filling the bbq sauce near the pickle bar asked "you need something?" To which I just responded - Nope, just seeing what is there to offer. Mind you he was in the way of all the sauces and condiments.... ok anyway moving on. Perhaps his way of customer service reflects on the rest of the team which was glaringly apparent by now. Now if service is terrible but the food is amazing, one might be willing to overlook everything. Unfortunately it wasn't the case. Ribs were on the dry side, brisket was the best thing on my tray, green beans and bacon looked and tasted of sadness. My friends fries were also terrible- mainly because it looked like her fries sat for a while which to her dismay she started to see other customers fresh fries and it was night and day in comparison. Normally a decent place for ribs, not tonight. Waited 20 minutes went up to the counter to inquire about my order. Note the tell me there are no more ribs, really? They try to substitute 1 pound of other meat? Ribs $30, 1 pound of pork $15, what are they trying to pull. The rest of the order was cold and had to be sent back. The pick up counter was nasty with sauce bottles empty and disgusting looking. The rest room was dirty. They refunded my rib order but did not do anything for all the inconvenience. Got clumps of beige chicken swimming in a creamy water. Wasn't my first rodeo here. Went once to try the ribs. Ok, the restaurant was new then. They were terrible. I gave them a pass and I waited a year until they got better at what they do. Second time was just as bad. Fine, the place is still in business, how bad could it be? Well, a slide backwards. This was a great find on our way to Ravinia Park. Well, not really on our way, we stayed on 94 the Edens spur, by mistake and had to double back on Lake Cook Road. We were looking for a place to eat, but decided that we no longer had time for a sit down. We saw City Barbecue and stopped to order take out meals. They were extremely efficient in taking our order and the menu was easy to follow. We ordered two chicken breast sandwiches and a brisket sandwich and a pulled chicken sandwich. We ordered a bunch of sides; salad, cole slaw, fries, mac and cheese, corn bread and some drinks and beer. There was so much food and bill, I think, came to less than $60 for four adults. They packed everything up really nice in a big brown bag. When we got to Ravinia, we found a place to sit and dug in. I know we were really hungry, but it was great. Wonderful smoky flavors. Ravinia is an experience in itself, so all in all, our evening was made better by have delicious food that we did not pay a fortune for. I understand there are a few locations near Chicagoland and Deerfield is not the closest to us. I guess we may have to take a roadtrip one day to try another location, or just save this one for when we go to Ravinia! read more

"Green beans" are not " baked beans" and "I don't want a sandwich" does not mean I want that pulled pork on two slices of bread. Great food and large selection at the Deerfield grand opening! I attended the grand opening of City BBQ in Berwyn, therefore I am "very" familiar with the menu offerings. Everything on the menu is great! The ribs are great and also highly notable is the smoked turkey. Please do yourself a favor and try it. The turkey is uber moist and full flavored and no sauce is required, unless you simply want to gild the lily. Gone are the tough-as-leather experiences that are associated with ordering turkey. This is the best BBQ & value for BBQ in IL., maybe the world! I ordered the meal for 14-16 curbside at 11 am last Sunday and was packed in my car at 4:15 pm with a smile. They supply all the utensils, more savings. I went with the Beef Brisket, Pulled Port, (they include buns for sandwiches), Baked Beans, Mac & Cheese, half a chicken, Original and Brush Fire BBQ. It was enough to feed 20++. I did have a guest bring potato and regular salad. My only ask of the store is to allow 4 sides instead of 2 (2.5 Qt.) it is just too much food and I believe everybody likes to mix up the sides for the BBQ. Ordering from Chicago BBQ was the smartest move I made in 2020. My total bill was so affordable!! My only regret is I didn't tip the person loading the car (no cash) and couldn't tip when I paid.
