My brother suggested lunch at this place to my sister and I for our monthly outing. I've been wanting beef brisket for over a week, so this was perfect. We pulled up at 1pm on a Sat and the drive-thru was wrapped! The line inside wasn't long, but the dine in was packed. We wanted to try everything and, ...surprise! Sample platters! We agreed to the Motherload. It was 6 different meats, 6 sides, cornbread, and texas toast. We got lucky when we got our food as the inside was cleared by then. The staff really was pushing through all these customers. They were also very sweet and provided wonderful customer service, despite how hectic it was during this hour. I was too busy enjoying everything that I don't remember what I liked more than others, but I do recall LOVING the brisket. And that hot/spicy bbq sauce was great with it all. The mac and cheese was very good. The collards were saltier than I'd like, but I ate it with the turkey, and all was well. The corn pudding was good, but not as sweet as I prefer. Just experienced City BBQ for the first time, and I gotta say, it will NOT be my last. From the second we walked in the door, the courteous staff wanted to make sure we were satisfied with everything. From the helpful lady who took our order, to the attentive cooks in the kitchen and even the wait staff were on their toes, making sure we had a terrific experience. And the food? The chicken (leg & thigh) was amazing. It tasted wood smoked and fresh from the grill! Not like it had been sitting under a heat lamp all day. The brisket was smothered in the BBQ-y goodness of their original sauce, and was, to steal a familiar phrase, finger-lickin'- good! The fries had a great flavor and were crispy & golden. The place was clean & well sanitized. Of course, some tables were unusable due to COVID restrictions, but they seemed to have made the most of the space. My husband and i like Kansas City style BarBQue. We have been to City Barbque a few times. We enjoyed our experience. The food was pretty good for a chain establishment. Yesterday we returned about a year later. What happened?? The prices went up significantly, which wasn't surprising as all prices have increased because of inflation. After ordering we had to look for a clean table. The tables around us were really dirty. Our plates were greasy, the silverware looked spotty. We ordered brisket. There's were no knives offered to cut it. My husband asked for a knife and was given to go plastic utensils. The food was ok, but not as good as before. I ate half my meal. They only had single serving to go containers, so I had to use several to take my meal home, which was awkward to carry out along with a purse, so I had to go back up to ask for a bag. I would also like to address the standing water on the floor near the floor beams, which looked dirty and had no sign of caution near it. My husband and I paid over 60$ for two brisket meals, to sit in a dirty atmosphere and eat "ok" food. It was really disappointing. The shining light of the experience was the staff. I had read some reviews about City Barbecue and our sons family tried it out about a week ago, and gave us his opinion that it was all good except the Ribs. He did mention that the Turkey was okay, but dry. We went this past Wednesday (4/28/21) about 4:30 pm to try to miss the crowd and no one was in the line, but several small groups walked in right after us. Being the first time at this restaurant we weren't sure what we wanted and you have to order and pay before you are seated. They have a number of meal options, but everything is priced ala carte which wasn't clear to us. We both decided on the Brisket and it was very tasty. I wanted the sausage but they said it would be 15 to 20 minutes until it would be ready, so I had the pulled pork and sides of French fries and hushpuppies. My wife had the potato salad and said it was good. And you get choices of several sauces for the meats. We then got our drinks and sat down, we had the choice of any seat in the house. Our food was delivered fairly quickly except for the French fries which were just being cooked and would be delivered later. One thing I noticed immediately is that both the Brisket and the Pulled Pork were not very warm, in fact the pulled pork was cool at the time of delivery. I don't think this is a good practice. Also, we had chosen two of the sauces and they were delivered in small plastic containers. Unfortunately the containers were not marked as to what they were. I enjoyed the one that was sweeter, but not the other one. I will go back for another try, I recognize that it is new at this location and people are still learning, but the issues I had were basic food issues that every restaurant should be able to accomplish from startup. I am hoping they get things worked out because it is one of the few places where you can get Brisket in this area, and it was very good. read more

Disappointed more each time I come. Tonight was the last time. Tonight I waited 25 minutes for two pork sandwiches and Mac and cheese. When we got up there, they just "dropped our well done fries ". After another 10 minutes, 35 minutes into my order, we ask for the fries. The cook drops them out of the oil and says "they're Gonna have to f'in wait". My request for well done fries resulted in soggy, raw, black fries. There were eight different employees. The biggest downside to City Barbecue is the inconsistency in the meat. Some days the barbecue is absolutely outstanding -- moist, flavorful, completely satisfying. Other days, it's the exact opposite -- dry, bland, and utterly disappointing. I've experienced this with both the brisket and the pork, and it's such a bummer. This place has so much else going for it: the drive-thru!, the lovely customer service from the staff, the decently affordable price tag. Extremely slow and the food was delivered cold to the table. We ordered 2 Briskets, fried pickles, baked beans and a slice of cake. This was the worst bbq i've ever had and that's saying a lot being from the north. We ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken which consisted of more colas than chicken and it was a plain chicken breast (fried) with some sauce on it. wasn't even close to nashville hot closer to chipotle. We also ordered a sampler of 3 meats and two sides and revived 2 meats and 1 side of cheese with macaroni. Barely any noodles even in there cheese to mac ratio is terrible. Also ordered a side of fries with queso and was never asked if i also wanted bacon or that tit came with bacon? i don't know we got bacon and I am not very happy. Food is poor and service is poor. I would not stop here again if I hadn't eaten for three days and this was the only option for 100 miles. City Barbecue is never good, but this particular location is particularly bad. I've had it twice now thanks to the inexperience of friends and colleagues and both times were disappointing despite going in with terribly low expectations. The first time I had the burnt ends "special" in the restaurant during that brief window between when I got my first booster and the omicron wave. The meat was so chewy it was like the fat was quickly seared and then kept warm for hours. The sides were over salty and flavorless. The peach cobbler was delicious so I said I'd try again if I had to. When I had to, we ordered curbside. I drove the 10 min out and back to find they forgot the pulled pork sandwich. I had the ribs and tried to bite into them as I called the store. They kindly offered to make me a new sandwich if I drove back and went inside to talk to the manager. As I tried to pull the rubbery meat from the cold bone of one of the ribs, I decided it wasn't worth the effort if the pulled pork was going to be anything like the ribs. I learned my lesson. I'm a native Texan and 25 year pit master. I have been cooking brisket most my life, so I'm always willing to try other Q joints, and while I'll always think mine is the best I have had a few, rarely, better. . Sadly not the case for City BBQ. They fall into the fast, up and coming style of restaurants I call 'trend a que' joints. With the help of either old Hickory automated pits or Southern Pride automated smokers, they are robot pit masters. You do get a tender product with bark but little to no smoke ring or flavor which is the hallmark of Texas style bbq. It's that same look and feel as all other trend a q joints. Nothing really original or signature that will make me want to come back. But I am a purist and will always favor joints with an on staff pit master putting in those long hours. Sides were meh. But customer service was lackluster. Need to tighten that up guys. Also recommend keeping that temp lower and getting more wood on there and not letting the gas do the work. Friend Friend selected City Barbecue for our Thursday lunch outing. Once I finally arrived after taking several wrong turns, I was glad to find no line. This was her second time so I let her direct me. Together (which means I tasted hers) we had the platter with ribs and brisket and a turkey sandwich. Sides were collards and macaroni. The brisket was good and ribs had nice flavor. The turkey was plentiful on the sandwich and was surprisingly moist. I didn't even have to drown it in bbq sauce and I love my sauces. The guy was very polite and when I asked about this favorite item, He suggested the sausage which I'm going back to get tonight. My heart was on brisket and it didn't disappoint. The meat was tender and there was a lot of it. I ate it with the sweet sauce and my oh my. He did recommend the Mac n cheese. Now I come from a family that prides itself on homemade Mac. As much as I want to like this place because they have brisket I just don't think I can go there anymore. We've been there two or three times I think the first time the food was pretty good The second two times it's been so so. The other day we ordered a platter that has brisket pulled pork sliced turkey breast and a sausage and we also ordered an additional 1/2 lb of brisket. One of the brisket servings was mostly fat and the other brisket serving was not fresh looking and looked like it had been reheated in a steamer possibly. If you know anything about brisket you never slice it before you're going to serve it and this brisket looked like it had been sliced at least a day in advance and therefore had a very dry texture it also had very little flavor as did the pulled pork. I'm no restaurant owner but I have smoked many a brisket and know that a simple seasoning of 50/50 salt and pepper is about all it takes. A restaurant such as this that probably cooks lots of brisket should never have to slice it more than 10 minutes before it's needed in fact they really should only slice it by order. The side dishes were okay but they certainly didn't make up for the lack of flavor and care in both the pulled pork and the brisket. read more

My husband and I went to the one in Kettering this morning and the service and food was phenomenal. The sandwich I had was so good, I decided to get some for dinner. I went to Miller Lane to get my dinner and boy I tell you..... I will NEVER EVER go back, left the nastiest taste in my mouth. Nothing but children that play around in there. They had a young guy on the drive-thru cash register that had no clue what he was doing. He couldn't even use the card machine properly. He ended up charging me for barb sauce in both orders. When I got home I caught the mistake and called back up there. They kept giving each other the phone, putting the phone down, then putting it on hold. I called the hotline and requested to speak with a manager, nope can't even speak with someone. I was told the market manager would look into it! Ridiculous at its finest! We didn't have to use the bbq sauce for the pulled chicken. The portions were adequate for the price. They forgot one of our side items. The customer service that we received from the manager Tee pushed this review to a 5. He provided the best customer service experience I've had in quite some time.
