Last week's wine tasting at City Club of Wilmington was another reminder of why this place is such a hidden gem. Every course feels intentional, and the culinary creativity coming out of the kitchen is unlike anything else in Wilmington. The Executive Chef continually creates dishes that are both memorable and unique--often featuring specialties you won't find elsewhere in town. Feeling like foie gras, quail, or wagyu? Last night was the first time that my wife and I had been to City Club. It is a really attractive venue and there was a really beautifully decorated Christmas tree in one of the rooms. I have never seen such a tree so magnificent as that one. We took pictures of course. The ambiance was delightful. We were with a group celebrating Christmas together. Our group works together helping people in our community so it was an opportunity for us all to get to know one another better since we are usually all busy when we do our work. It was good to meet friends and other people who were co-workers that we had never met before. Also to meet their spouses. I thought the food was excellent, a fantastic salad with various condiments as well as beautifully cooked beef and an amazing shrimp dish. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The meal was self-service but the table service was very good also. The staff were reasonably attentive. I do feel that the food was expensive for what was provided. In local upscale restaurant recently we paid the same price but we had a waiter, an appetizer, drinks, a main course and a dessert, all high quality. I think this meal was almost double the price it should have been, especially since we had to pay for our drinks on top of a price that would have included drinks in other establishments. The bar service was not so good unfortunately. We arrived at the bar early and I ordered my wife a glass of wine. After the lady bartender poured the wine I handed her my bank card and told her that I would have a glass of Cabernet. She took my bank card and then moved on to two men who arrived after she served my wife, ignoring my order. I felt this was extremely rude and inappropriate. Given the occasion I decided not to not to ruin the evening by complaining, but rather wait until she finished their orders which were cocktails for four I believe. By the time she poured my glass of wine I had forgotten that she had not given me a receipt or my card back. I left the event without realizing that my card (with my name on it) was still at the bar. So the second error was not simply giving my card to one of the hosts (e.g., the lady in the red jacket) to give to one of the people in the room who was in charge and who would know right away where I was sitting and return it to me together with my receipt. Instead, I received a message from one of my colleagues after arriving home, late in the evening, that she had my card (Much to my surprise) and that she could get it back to me on Thursday. I thanked her for her kindness and I plan to meet up with her later today. I can honestly say that I have never had a bartender treat me in this way before, they always finish my order and give me my receipt and my card back before moving to the next customer. That is the customary thing to do. Perhaps she needed more help but an experienced bartender would follow the protocol regardless. Perhaps she got flustered. I let it pass and enjoyed the evening but when I learned that I left without my card being returned to me with no attempt to get it back to me for more than an hour while we were having dinner I decided to send in my review. Somebody needs to speak to that bartender about serving customers in an appropriate manner. Thanks for this opportunity to review The Club. It's such a great venue but I have attended other equally good restaurants that provide better value and superior service. read more

I helped host an event at the City Club. Downtown Wilmington, beautiful building and interesting history. Inside, the place is gorgeous, and the staff is so amazing. We recently stayed at The Inn at City Club in downtown Wilmington.There is a lot of charm to this historic estate. Beautiful moulding and flooring. Lovely decor. Large jacuzzi tub. The rooms are enormous, well layed out, and the owners have furnished the rooms perfectly! Excellent location! Situated in the heart of Downtown Wilmington, we enjoyed sunset strolls on the river walk and dining in the club restaurant downstairs. The food was fantastic and the staff friendly. I was surprised by how quiet and private it is in the rooms despite being in the middle of town and the City Club downstairs. Tom was an excellent host. We are looking forward to our next stay. read more

This is members only but members can bring guests. This isn't an exclusive club. There's a monthly fee and minimum but many benefits. You're able to go to ( and book rooms) at clubs around the world. There's a wine club where distributors visit with tastings and discounted prices. It's a social event with great prices. But the food! Chef Matthew Beckleheimer is simply outstanding. Menus change seasonally and there are daily specials. Holidays have special menus including buffets or multi course themed meals. Tonight I had the Caesar salad- large and traditional- delicious. I followed up with shrimp and grits. Absolutely delightful! These items aren't very adventurous but what I desired this evening. My friend had grilled Brussels sprouts with red pepper. Also wonderful. This was followed with oysters with sundry embellishments. This was a spicy dish and bartender extraordinaire- Greg Matheson brought a sip+ of Riesling as a palate cleanser. Greg is a master at craft cocktails and development of the wine list. Join or ask a member to take you for extraordinary food, beverages, service and pampering. This is a club for lovers of a relaxing, enjoyable experience. This is a place to feel welcomed. read more

The City Club at de Rosset is a private club in a lovely 19th century mansion near the banks of the Cape Fear river. As you walk up the stairs through the front terraced garden, you approach the veranda that is lined with the requisite North Carolinian rocking chairs. This place oozes quaint yet refined southern hospitality and charm. Sconces, candles, and chandeliers abound. I was curious to see how the food would hold up when compared to some of the places that I frequent in SF, and I was pleasantly surprised. First off, the organic greens salad is one of the best salads that I've had lately. It's nothing groundbreaking in the creative department, but the perfect spring greens, the light sprinkling of gorgonzola, the spiced pecans, fresh raspberries and black berries, and the honey balsamic vinaigrette came together very nicely. The bread boy carries around a basket of bread and uses fancy tongs to serve you individual slices of warm bread as well as a serving of butter. The shrimp and grits is an upscale version with tasso accents in the broth, fresh tasting shrimp, and triangular wedges of herb flecked grits artfully arranged in a deep bowl. I also tried the fried shrimp with slaw and house-made potato ships. The shrimp were lightly battered and expertly fried, leaving them very juicy and sweet. House-made potato chips were dusted with a variety of spices that gave them a zingy flavor, some were crunchy but others were a touch chewy and greasy. The beef tenderloin that I tried was okay, but I found it to be a little bit lacking in the flavor department; it was juicy and rare enough but didn't taste like a whole lot. I wasn't tempted by any of the desserts so that's it. The City Club prides itself on its service, making diners feel like welcomed guests greeting members by name. If you're a member, you also have access to a few rooms upstairs for accommodations to live out your southern, Prue-civil war historical mansion fantasies. read more

If you are downtown and looking for great food and amazing service in a quiet, classy atmosphere this place is second to none.

This is a private club, but if you have a membership to any other Club Corp club you have access to dine here. The food was terrific for brunch and the service was also great. We had Crab Cakes Benedict with some cheesy grits that were terrific and not too heavy. Our server even brought out some complimentary cheddar biscuits with apricot jam, they were well worth the carbs. The club brought in a guitarist to play a little acoustic music during Sunday morning brunch which was fantastically relaxing, I will be back. read more
