We had a filing cabinet in our office with one, bent key, which we absolutely lost in the last year. Worlds most embarrassing moment for a realtor - having the lock break on a condo door in the minutes before your Sunday Open House and no keys to the other door. Googled local locksmiths, called Ray, he showed up in less than half an hour. Asked about emergency/weekend fees and was relieved when he told me "it is the same $75 to show up whether it is Sunday or Monday". He managed to get the door open without damaging the frame, and then sat with us at our OH for another hour while he took apart and rebuilt the inner workings of the old lock. Both myself and the owners were very happy with the quality of the work and the service, and the reasonable cost. I came home to find my lock broken and called Ray. He came over quickly and spent hours prying the door open. He came back again the next day for a few hours to finish the job and gave me the bill, which was $880. I told him that this made no sense and he said that it was a discounted bill. After discussing with him and agreeing to pay cash, the new final bill was just under $700. The color of the new piece of the lock is different than the rest of my existing lock, my key was soaked with grease each time I used it, and a few days later, I thought I wasn't going to get in again. This time I called a locksmith that a friend knows well. He spent more time working on it. I complained to Ray and he did credit me back over half of the price. I am confused as to why everyone on this site had a great experience. UPDATE: 4/21/13 My neighbor with the same lock had extensive work done to his lock at a fraction of the price that Ray charged. Another locksmith that looked at the work he did for me and then looked at the bill said that I had been ripped off in an extreme way and that the work wasn't done correctly. I called this firm at about 9pm the day before the largest blizzard in recent memory in Boston. I was locked out of my car on a busy street (it certainly would have been towed or worse) and Ray came to let me in. Once he arrived, I was able to get into my car in about 3 minutes. His prices aren't necessarily cheap (it is Boston) but they seem to be at or slightly below market...so no complains there. I called another local locksmith and sure there was a 20 minute wait but he showed, five minutes with the front door of my apartment and i was in to my spare set of keys. 120 dollars and done. cut to RF locks. i moved to worthington rd in Brookline and found myself in a similar situation. I call RF locks based on a search, no answer but a call right back. He'll be there in twenty, forty five minutes later still waiting in the cold. Hired them for door lock replacement. Asked repeatedly for estimate over the phone. Locksmith wouldn't provide an estimate over the phone, wanted to look at it first, assuring me that I didn't need to hire him them (don't fall for that). At the time of the appointment, locksmith proceeded to work without providing estimate upfront. He worked hastily, left excess marking color behind on deadbolt, outside doorknob brand lettering not level, used too large spade bit to drill hole in doorframe which I will need to have filled, doorframe edge is also damaged/cracked now, when I told him that his job was not to install the smartlook component that I would do this myself, he ignored it and proceeded to install the smartlock as well. Door wasn't closing right, he started to drill the strike plate to make it close smoothly but, now I have damaged strike plates and the door still isn't closing properly. Other guy named price after work was completed (both locksmiths disagreed on how much to charge me), ended up being $100 more than what a couple other companies quoted me. Felt ripped off. Won't use them for the other door. Had Bulent from Star Locksmith do the same work (installed the same hardware as RF Locks had) on two other exterior doors of the house. He worked swiftly and very precisely. He also rekeyed a lock and fine tuned two other locks. He even redid and fixed the work RF Locks had done on the first door without an extra charge. My front door closes smoothly now and the strike plate is properly installed (correct orientation and alignment with correct screws ankered in the wood frame of the door not in the cement of the wall). Star Locksmith charged less for three times and much better work than RF Locks had done. read more

If you're looking for an honest, all-around good locksmith, Ray is your guy. I called Ray after finding him on Yelp. I was in Boston to manage a nightmare contractor situation where he had locked up the house and abandoned the property. I called Ray and he came out to help--during his drive over, I noticed that the key was working, but the door wouldn't open. Apparently, the contractor had switched back the old locks to the originals. Called Ray because I didn't want to waste his time with a working lock, even though we couldn't open the door. He came anyway, was very calming and managed to open the door for us (later, realized the contractor had tied the door, which is why we were struggling with it). Ray was amazing and kind--he knew my mom and I were under a lot of stress. I had mentioned that we were in town looking for a new contractor, and he recommended someone he trusted. He stayed with us in our unfinished house (ie not heating!) until the new contractor came. He even recommended a landscaper and his equally amazing daughter, who is a real estate agent.
