One of the smallest city mills on island with okay customer service. Hardly any staff on the grounds roaming the place to see if customers need help and not only that but when getting help seems like the staff don't even know what they're talking about let alone where things are in this store. If needing home repairs and you have questions on it I highly recommend going else where. read more

One of the best shopping experiences ever. Went to spend a PO and was NOT looking forward to this chore. Needed help immediately and Tony came to my rescue! Above and beyond what he needed to do for me! Then Fa came along...hilarious and unbelievably helpful and just the perfect touch to an already fabulous experience. Then Stuart, a manager, approached me to see if I needed anything. And guess what? Above and beyond with his customer service, too, as he even helped to load my car. It sounds almost ridiculous, but in a day and age where we do so much online shopping, and the rare instances I do actually enter a store always falling short of being even slightly memorable...this was delightfully fun and fabulous. Located in the Waimalu plaza, this store is convenient for the residents nearby or if you are dining nearby and want to shop afterwards. The layout is similar to the other City Mill stores. Wow, just when I thought the Honolulu City Mill was great along comes the friendly and helpful City Mill in Aiea! I was asked if I needed help and if I needed a basket several times by the friendly workers. When I was checking out, another cashier opened a line and offered help. 5/17/18 Social distancing enforced with marking on floor. Patrons appear to be careful with distancing themselves as well. Went to CM to look for bird perching deterrent. I love my new fence but the birds love it too. I don't mind sharing with them but they are not cleaning up after themselves. I don't appreciate their excrements!!! I don't often come to City Mill, but tonight, I really needed to. At work, I have a whole bunch of metal cabinets that have these old stickers on it that need to come off. I'm not risking my manicured nails for this so in search of a blade scraper I go! I tried Target and unfortunately their app hasn't been reliable lately - anything their app says is "in stock," isn't. I end up wasting time searching their store and time I couldn't have spent getting the product elsewhere. Frustrated, I call City Mill Waimalu and was promptly helped. The young lady knew exactly what I was looking for and even told where in the store I could find it. So I drive down over, but as soon as I enter the store, I totally forget which aisle she told me it was in and decided to ask for help (again). In a snap, an associate appeared and helped me right away, it turns out to be the nice lady who spoke to me on the phone. Even the manager, Bo, came to help. He walked me to the item and explained the difference between blade scrapers and those that you see being used to scrape of things like gum. Super knowledgeable guy! Before we part, Bo asks if he can help me with anything else. I explained that I wasn't exactly looking for an indoor plant, but was interested in getting one. Bo walks me over to the plants (awesome, right?!) and shares that they have a super awesome resident plant whisperer, named Gary C. Technically Gary C. is an awesome plant specialist who retired after many years at a plant nursery and hands-down knows his stuff about plants. Gary C. laid down his plant knowledge and helped me pick a plant, which I have named Gary in his honor. If you ever need help finding tools or plants, City Mill Waimalu is the place to go. If you don't want to walk a mile at Home Depot, City Mill is a better place. That is if you know exactly what you are looking for. City Mill is a lot smaller than Home Depot. So they might not have everything. But I have to brag about City Mill's customer service. 9 out of 10, someone is always within your eye sight wanting to help you. That's the difference between city mill and home depot or Lowe's. I'm a loner shopper but sometimes I do need experts advice. Their customer service is top notch from floor to check out. read more

Asked for lighting timers and was sent to an aisle with garden equipment and buckets. Asked another associate and when I was sent to the correct aisle I mentioned had happened and she said "oh yeah we do have timers in that aisle too." I didn't find the type I was looking for and as I was leaving a gentleman asked if I found everything I needed. When I replied I had not he didn't answer. Why does a company train staff to ask this question if there is no follow up to assist with customer needs? I went by the original aisle again just to make sure I didn't overlook the tinkered the first time and nope. There were only garden tools and buckets! Poor service. I remember as a kid going to City Mill with my grandpa whenever he needed something for a project around the house. The place brings back fun memories and I'm glad I started to shop here as well. The staff makes you feel like family and they are locally owned and operated as a family run business for decades. First off this isn't a big box store, yes you will pay a little more than one of the big box chains but the service and friendly staff makes up for that. If I need some screws and a few pieces of lumber I take the short drive to Waimalu Plaza and head right inside to The Mill! It's such a relaxed environment that you can take the time to browse or get what you need and get out quick. They sell anything you could need for home improvement. Recently I needed some MDF board and short drywall screws for a TV stand modification for my mother and I was in and out in a few minutes. Went with my girlfriend the other day to get a key made, it was done under 5 minutes and it cost less than $3. Great service and quality products. If it weren't for him I probably would've had to go to a few other stores or I still would've been stuck on that problem i had.. I went to city mill waimalu to get 2 water line hoses and a split adapter for my moms kitchen sink and I got stuck trying to find the split adapter . Michael approached us and was really friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. He stayed to help me til we found the right part. Locally owned and operated, City Mill is located in the Waimalu Shopping Plaza. One thing they pride themselves on is service. This they do provide from the moment you walk in. A sales associate is always around in the isles and willing to help you find what you need. Compared to the big box home improvement stores, you wont find 50 different hammers but rather 10 that are priced from cheaper quality to a higher quality. There are times when you know what you want and dont want to have to walk for isles and isles so you just go to the local hardware store. Prices are about the same for most items. I have seen some specials that best places like Lowes and Home Depot. You just have to know your prices. This is a place that is close, local and is their for the ease. read more

I live in Central Oahu, and for some reason, I tend to go the opposite direction of town for all my errands, so I opted to go to this City Mill versus the one in the other direction. They will be doing renovation in my apartment, so I can't have big furniture. I asked around for a bed solution and was told that City Mill carries the folding kine mattresses. I called ahead, and the guy on the phone was so nice. He walked to where they were displayed and counted out how many full and twin-sized ones they had, even gave me the price. When we showed up, another employee offered to help us out, too. The cashier was even super nice and talked story for a bit. I do love this aloha spirit. In Los Angeles people are shooting each other on the freeways. Here you can actually say hi and talk to people. So we bought an Ohana Industries full-size folding mattress, and it's getting the job done until we can get our real bed. I see myself coming back here for our future home needs. read more

Here's a true test of a great store. I went nearby to Walmart to get my old, and now bending, deadbolt key made. They tried a computerized match to no avail. Then, to Home Depo. Again they tried a computerized match and they recommended that I go to a locksmith. Finally, I went to City Mill in Waimalu Shopping Center. The store clerk tried the same computerized match. She then scrutinized the problem when the computer couldn't find a match. She checked the other key blanks she had, then pulled one, and said she would try a certain key with a different style code. She showed her experience and initiative to try to get the key done. I went home, and the old door worked. Sometimes the better store may not be as glamorous. This is my go to hardware store. They have everything I need for the small home repairs I have to do around my house. Most recently, I am replacing my mailbox. I'm not the handiest person and come here because i find it easy to ask questions and advice on the repairs. There are always a worker nearby. They are always cheerful. They have always been knowledgeable and patient in explaining things to me. all these things are very different from what I've found at the bigger mainland bigbox stores. read more

After years of doing business with City Mill, it really saddened my family to be treated like shoplifters and criminal. There are signs posted saying City Mill reserves the right to check bags/receipts. In fact, the clerk ran after us scolding my daughter for bringing in her baby's diaper bag and oversized purse. Her excuse was for us to "read the signs." We know for a fact that Home Depot and Lowes are less expensive but we're Kama'aina and felt we should patronize a local retailer even though, all things considered, there are more mainland stores in Hawaii than local ones nowadays. What has always struck us about City Mill prior to today's incident was that they are normally pleasant and helpful. While there have been instances of stuck up workers treating people like myself(" (who know nothing of repair or handyman work) with disdain and condescension, they were reasonably pleasant and know what they sell. On the occasions I've been to a Home Depot, they were helpful but often gave me slightly incorrect information and I would often have to go back to get things exchanged or fixed up....that rarely happens with City Mill. But now, just walking into the store with a bag over ones shoulder, it seems I'll be stopped and told to leave my bag in the front or have the City Mill staff for no apparent reason, be able to seize my bag and paw through my personal belongings. I don't know if there is or can be an alternative watching for shoplifters. But more discretion is needed or a different approach in telling customers you have new policies. I'll have to get use to going to other hardware stores for now rather than be subjected to random searches or confrontations. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to be able to find everything I needed for a small project in stock at a single location! And there were actual salespeople on the floor to help me when I wasn't sure what I was looking for! While City Mill might not have as many choices as the big box stores, their staff is incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Ask anyone who knows me and they'll tell you that I will shop at City Mill any day rather than go to their big box competitors!!! I really like the friendly atmosphere and personal service there. The customer to sales associate ratio is way lower than the other guys and chances are good that when you need assistance you won't have to look very far!! And, they are very helpful !!! Recently I needed some things for my house and made the trek to my neighborhood City Mill. Well, as luck would have it, their system went down while the associate was ringing up my purchases. Once it was confirmed that indeed the system was down, they went into their standby mode. The cashier took out a folder that had been pre-packed with their backup stuff. They had everything in that folder such as, invoice sheets and even down to the calculator and tax schedule! I was really impressed because everything was handled so efficiently, no panic or confusion. I can just imagine what would happen if it were one of the big guys!!! I went here for locally produced garden and top soil, tomato cages and 2 plant pots. I got exactly what I was looking for and then some. The first staff person to ask me if I needed help referred me to another staff member who knew what I was looking for. He walked me over to the soil section explained how to mix the different types of soil. While I was getting my other items he loaded up a flat cart for me and left it near the front. After finding my other items with a little more help from the staff I checked out, the cashier has asked if I needed help and I said no, and headed to my car. At my car I was loading stuff into the backseat and had the trunk open for the bags of soil. I looked up from the backseat and the staff member who helped explain the soil to me was there to help me load my bags into the trunk. This was above and beyond customer service!!! Needed to go to City Mill, for things to repair the leak under the daughters kitchen sink. Our plumber at where I work, gave me a list of what I'll need and said, an important part for the repairs can be picked up there. I thought great, because it's the nearest hardware store to me, and it's usually where I go for house repair needs. So I went on Sunday, and they were closed (Easter, I forgot) But hey, no biggie... I'll go down the street to Home Depot and get it there. BUT... they don't carry that... shucks. Got going to Hardware Hawaii, and it was also closed.. double shucks. Got to City Mill the next day, got some help in the plumbing isle from an associate., got what I needed, paid for it at the counter where I was asked with a smile; " Did I find everything I needed?" Got home, and after a little over an hour.... no more leak!!! Close to home, friendly knowledgeable service, got just about everything I need, and prices comparable to the big box stores, and locally owned. I'll be back, thanks. read more

The worst City Mill ever! I went to make keys and the person told me they don't make those here in Hawaii. I'm the 3rd one asking. I told her Fisher can get it and she looked at me like "go over there then". She even attempted to show me the section where they keep locks to prove no one has it. Why waste time when they don't carry it. So while in the store, I yelped keys and found a business that made the keys for me. 20 minutes after I left Silly Mill, I got what I what I wanted and with a smile. These small local companies are complaining they're getting pushed out by the big box retailers but a lot has to do with the customer service in some of the existing local establishments. There's lots of locals working in the mainland chains too. Clean up your act or your store may be next. So sad. I loved shopping at City Mill. Now it's just Sllly Mill. read more

This is gonna be a fairly short review. I've been to this location twice, both times with my boyfriend needing to buy something. I will say that it is quite easy to just get lost in what you're trying to find with all the other things they sell here. Not to say it's unorganized because it is a very organized store, but with all different items I wouldn't expect to find at a home improvement store. I way rather come to a local store like this versus a mainland competitor like Home Depot or Lowes. It just feels right. Anyway, both times I came here, we were helped by the courteous staff. It is so easy to find workers in the store and we never feel intimidated to ask for help. We went in today looking for a faucet valve thingy (I don't even know what to call it). It's pretty much what connects your main pipe to your water hose, the L-shaped valve? Anyway, my boyfriend thought it'd be in garden, so of course I went to plumbing. Hahaha. I'm so smart. I found the area it'd be in, but I couldn't find the actual piece. The lady that was helping an older gentleman finished and asked us what we needed, without hesitation. She looked at the piece that we'd brought it and took us to get a replacement in the next aisle over. It was as easy as that! I wish I got her name, but it was a cute Filipino lady in plumbing! I love the fact that this place is locally owned and operated. I'm all for buy local stay local!! But anyways. I'm not really into building things and dyi projects. My domain is the garden. When I looked at the gardening stuff I saw that their selection is very small and over priced. So I wasn't interested. What really gave this place 3 stars was the customer service. Every where I turned there was a worker there with a smile that asked me if they could help me. This store is clean, the employees are nice and everything is easily found. I've been a fan and a strong supporter of City Mill growing up in Hawaii. Especially when the large chain hardware stores started to invade the islands. However, I was disappointed with their false advertisements and lame excuses by customer service on my recent visit home and to City Mill. I questioned a product on one of their ads and received a lame, borderline lie, from customer service. It felt as though I was interrupting employee chit chat (non work related) and was given a quick answer so that they can go back to talking story. What happened to City Mill's customer service? The quality of their products? And their honesty? I've gotten far better service at Home Depot on the mainland. This recent experience at City Mill has definitely saddened me. read more
