While visiting Catawba Collage we stopped in at the 'City Tavern'. Very nice open-air pub/bar style restaurant. Seated quickly and our waitress was lively, friendly, and constantly checked in on us. This is a bar so don't expect over-the-top food selections... but in two visits our party of six sampled about one-half of the menu. Everything we sampled was good and there were no bad reviews. response was a little slow when I arrived but there's a lot of people coming and going and just the one nurse on duty... iced water to start then a quick peek at the menu and it looks like we're having the All American burger: half a pound of american beefs plus american greens, tomato, onion, mayo, and of course american cheese alongside a cute li'l bucket of pommes frite. pretty sure the burger is sourced but it's recent and put together well enough; greens are slightly bitter, onion is sharp, and the tomato represents well. if I was given to whining - and I am - I'd put a potato bun around it because, well, you know... spud flour!! kinda big for a bar but there's friends and families and people of all ages dining and drinking responsibily and I'm pretty sure Tina and her crew keep an eye on things to keep the peace. dining al fresco is an option in favourable weather and there's event space upstairs if necessary... read more

We went to City Tavern after attending a funeral at Salisbury National Cemetery, which is three minutes down the road in the charming old section of town. I had made a reservation for a party of 10, but we showed up with 17 people. Heather, the manager, was able to accommodate us. Riley was our server. She was absolutely perfect. We had 3 different tables and I asked her to give every table their own check. And she was patient & fun with everyone and I just really appreciate her wonderful attitude and kindness. The food and drinks were fantastic. The prices were reasonable! As a fellow service industry person myself, I couldn't have asked for a better experience! Swing and a Miss. We got seated quickly, and drink orders came just as fast. Promising start. But then... nothing. Fifteen minutes passed, and not a single person came back to take our order. The energy went from hopeful to neglected real quick. A restaurant can survive slow food, but not a black hole of service. I should have read reviews before walking in. This is a good place to eat! Cool downtown pub atmosphere, good food. I've had the burgers, fish and chips and most recently the ribeye. The steak and sides were seasoned very well and the steak was cooked to my liking. This is one of our favorite places to eat in Salisbury. read more

I was in town as my daughter is starting theater here in Salisbury and I was looking to try some of the local restaurants and see which one would be great to visit when my daughter is practicing theater and I need a place to work and eat. Well, I found my favorite with the first pic. Great atmosphere. The inside is amazing. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Then I saw the menu. I'll have to come here at LEAST 15 more times to get all the choices taken. I loved so much and had so many options. Check out the amazing menu pictures I took. But I chose the "Clucker" which is a grilled chicken sandwich with Gouda pimento cheese. It was AMAZING. I'm a big Brussel sprout fan and they had Brussels leaves sides. It was awesome also. First things first, it's bar food. Nothing more nothing less. Prices are great on drinks and food. We went on a Saturday evening & it seemed kinda dead but the waiters were definitely overwhelmed. Our server was okay, he took awhile for basic things like drink refills, napkins condiments. Etc. The food was average, however I really enjoyed my mashed potatoes. We'll be back to fry the burgers. Decided to try City Tavern due to long wait at our usual spot. Happy to branch out while visiting Salisbury. It is a pleasant spot off main drag. Sat right away, server was pleasant and on task. We had the Reuben and the Clucker. Enjoyed our meal, service and atmosphere. Maybe not a "YOU HAVE TO TRY" place but we'll definitely be back and keep it on our list. Typical tavern menu item but theirs are very good. plenty of TV and they have a patio. Nothing to look at sitting on the patio because it is facing the side street but you can people watch. walked in and hostess instantly started saying things to another girl about our party size (5 adults, 4 young kids) and the few kids we had with us. asked if they had ever seen kids in the restaurant and she seemed surprised that I had heard her and laughed. after this terrible taste in our mouths we had even worst taste with the food. my husband didn't even want to eat his wings so he just asked for a refund. another person asked her a beer that we never got till we were getting up to leave. worst restaurant experience we've had in a long time. read more

We enjoy stopping into City Tavern pretty regularly. The food is surprisingly good for a place that looks more like a bar at first glance. The service is always friendly but due to their setup it can sometimes take a little while to get your drinks if you order from the bar (they have a very big bar top that the bartender also has to deal with along with making drinks for everyone). It's not normally a major issue though. I'm a burger person and the burger here is very good but I would recommend the chicken and waffles actually. read more

Most experienced I've had here have been very positive. The wait staff is friendly and works quickly. The menu has good variety. The sandwiches and burgers taste really good- on the inside- but the bread is dry and almost stale. I've been here quite a few times so it's not just a one time occurrence. I mean it is Salisbury after all. This is a town that thinks salt is too spicy. There is literally nothing in Salisbury that is good and this place is no different. It's a more fancy bar or at least fancy for Salisbury. Food is mediocre to poor. Drinks are decently priced but they are inconsistent. Got the chicken and waffles and the chicken was just too rubbery and the waffles I feel like were frozen and just warmed up because they were not fluffy and had a freezer burn taste. Loved the decor and vibe of the restaurant. Burgers were good. Only complaint was that the chipotle aioli on the Bacon Marmalade Burger was so spicy, it killed all the other flavors on the burger- I couldn't taste the bacon marmalade at all. Very cool spot in downtown Salisbury. Large U shape bar, with plenty of other seats in the place. It's a full bar, but I was there for the draft beer. I lost count but I think there are over thirty beers on tap here. Many are regional beers. The bar staff was very friendly. You don't need a penicillin shot to use the restroom (very clean). They have food as well, but I was waiting on another restaurant to open to get food. Tip, download the Untappd app to see the list of draft beers here, or scan the QR code at the bar. First time at City Tavern and we were so happy with this place Our server Savannah was professional, friendly and knowledgeable. We had the tempura jalapeño spears which were delicious! I had a Cosmopolitan martini, which was excellent..my husband had a Burger with fries and all the fixings which included a fried pickle spear I had the Ruben which was served on marble rye bread with a side of Brussels sprout leaves which were crisps and really delicious! The place was clean, open, and had outdoor dining. The food was amazing, but the best part was my drink I had that was a lavender haze with butterfly pea flower and vodka absolutely delicious we will be going back again and again! Stopped in for dinner here tonight after a basketball tournament. Are party had the wings, loaded grilled cheese, ahi tuna, po boy, and another thing or two and everything was delicious. I'd have to say the sloppy Joe grilled cheese was surprisingly very very good. As for the service the staff were super nice and helpful. Sign on the front door says they are short staffed. They are over accepting tables and unable to serve. We were seated at a table that was greasy, looked like it had been wiped down but not cleaned. It took 45 min to get a couple of burgers. Once we talked to the server about it he stated they were short staffed and please be patient. No boat from management. It was our first visit to City Tavern. I didn't know what to expect other than what I read on yelp. I was impressed with this place from the time we walked up. The exterior of the building is pretty and inviting. The interior is equally as pretty. The hardwood floors were clean. The restrooms were even clean. They post a 97.5 sanitation grade. The atmosphere is good here and they have a full bar. The bar offers cocktails and a large selection of regional beers and wines. Our food was great. I got a buffalo chicken wrap with brussel sprouts on the side. I added a little house-made bleu cheese dressing. My wife got "The Clucker" grilled chicken sandwich with a side of mashed potatoes. Started off with a pretzel appetizer with beer cheese. The prestressed and beer cheese were both cold and tasted like it was a microwave product. Not a good start to our lunch. We ordered the Buffalo chicken sandwich with Brussel sprout leaves as a side and the mushroom and Swiss burger with fries as a side. The chicken sandwich was good, but the Brussel sprout leaves with bacon and a balsamic glaze were definitely the bomb. The burger and fries were good but lacked in seasoning. My family ate here for lunch after a visit to Spencer. They have a nice shaded outside eating area. The food and service were great. I had the grilled cheese and salad. I loved the addition of bacon marmalade and tomato relish on the sandwich. The salad was fresh and the homemade blood orange vinaigrette was tasty. My son had the kids chicken tenders and mashed potatoes. His meal was huge and very delicious. I would skip the fries and get the mashed potatoes because they were so much better than the fries.
