I loved the addition of bacon marmalade and tomato relish on the sandwich. The salad was fresh and the homemade blood orange vinaigrette was tasty. My son had the kids chicken tenders and mashed potatoes. His meal was huge and very delicious. I would skip the fries and get the mashed potatoes because they were so much better than the fries. This place has such potential. The space is nicely done. Atmosphere is hampered by music that doesn't match the audience - sounds more like kitchen staff chose the music. Good selection of craft beers, full service bar with good drinks. Expensive. They served a half beer - blew the keg - but charged full price for it. Service was good, but that's where it ended. Food service was slow (kitchen issue) and generally the end result was just acceptable. Food was cold - some items sat at the pass too long. Texas chili nachos were tasty, but too much liquid - chips were soggy. The real clincher was the tempura bacon served on the Bacon Marmalade Burger. Tempura was thick and soggy and the bacon was virtually uncooked. Just a really bad idea. Bacon is perfect in its own and doesn't need tempura batter!! Just cook the bacon. Burger was dry and inedible. Too bad they have missed the mark. Shoulda gone to the Smoke Pit! Manager did take burger off the bill. Check (party of 6) included 18% gratuity. read more

I was visiting Salisbury with family for a wedding. A group of us wanted to catch Game 1 of the 2023 World Series, and we chose City Tavern. This place is very comfortable with modern updates to an older building in the downtown area. It has a huge U-shaped bar in the spacious room. The service was excellent as Hailey was attentive and helpful. We sampled some of their large selection of beers. The menu looked good and is diverse. Lots of tempting selections, so we settled on nachos to share at the table. Very good. read more

Went here last night for a birthday dinner. We were a six top. Host advised an hour wait and took our phone number. We walked down to the Earth Day festival for a bit and came back 50 minutes after leaving our number. We didn't get a phone call. Stopped at the podium and found out that our names had been crossed off. Told the host that we didn't get a call and he shrugged and stopped making eye contact. He put our names down again and we waited another 45 minutes or so before being seated. We sat at the table for over thirty minutes. We were getting very hungry at this point, being at over 2 hours waiting for food. None of the servers seemed to realize we were there and we couldn't seem to get any of their attention. I am usually in the mood for a great burger and a beer when I come to visit a new town on a business trip. After looking through the yelp listings, this place was recommended. Although they have numerous beers on tap and it's more of a beer/sports bar with several TVs, there is a diverse crowd and they can easily make many basic cocktails as well. I skipped the brown ale I saw on tap and went with a hurricane which was well made in this part of the US....I was surprised. They had a few different versions of their 1/2 lb burger that's a blend of short rib and chuck. I chose one near the bottom of the menu without bacon, but with chorizo blended in and with homemade chili and cheddar cheese. I thought this was a great value and have been on sort of a chili cheeseburger kick lately, but this burger just didn't do it for me. The chorizo completely overwhelmed the taste and I could no longer taste the beef. If you're not a big chorizo fan, you should probably avoid this burger. Thinking back, I should have just ordered the more expensive bacon cheeseburger at the top of the menu and it probably would have been really great. I will note that the fries were really good, even if they were frozen fries. They had a perfect crispness and they kept warm my entire meal. Stopped in for lunch after furniture shopping. The City Tavern was one of the places recommended by our furniture guy. Can't say we were bowled over by the service and food, but we would recommend stopping in for a bite. As I recall they had a few specials on a blackboard as you enter, such as, a shrimp Po Boy, and a salmon dish, and a few others. We scanned the menu, and decided on a pretzel with beer cheese as our "shareable", an Ahi tuna salad, and an ultimate grilled cheese sandwich. Service was on the slow side; the restaurant was about half full. The beer cheese was interesting. Almost like a cheesy white sauce. It had plenty of flavor. All in all a hit. I enjoyed my salad, though the Asian vinaigrette dressing was a bit thin and lacked flavor. The salad consisted of mixed greens, some sliced cucumbers, red onion, and a few tomato wedges. My preference with the salad would be to add some crunch with almonds, Chinese noodles, sesame seeds, Napa cabbage? My wife had the grilled cheese; she declared it okay. Check out the Tavern. This restaurant has the potential to be good, but I would not recommend it at this point. My family went there tonight and it was a terrible experience. First, we ordered an appetizer which never came --come to find out they were out of it, (and this was our second choice, because they were out of the first one) but we did not find it was out, until after our food was served. Then I had ordered the special and did not find out that they were out of it until everyone else's food started arriving. My replacement of fish tacos was ordered and I asked for no sauce. However, they came up swimming in sauce and nothing else because they were out of all the other garnishes. Could not eat them as I knew I would not like the sauce (hence my asking for no sauce). This is our first restaurant experience since COVID-19. Ironically it was also my last restaurant experience prior to the pandemic. BC - the menu was more expansive. As a foodie, creative options has always enticed me. NOW - the lunch menu offers starters and mostly burgers. It is much more limited. That said, the food is just as good as always. The burgers and portions were large. My friend ordered the Buffalo Burger and we all waited to see how he was going to eat this dinosaur sized burger dripping with Buffalo Sauce. Would he do the Guy Fieri hunch over, or eat it with a knife and fork? He chose the knife and fork. All the burgers were big and tasty. I had the tempora shrimp with Asian sauce. It was OK, but I would have preferred cocktail sauce for dipping. The restaurant doesn't carry cocktail sauce so I was disappointed. The fried pickles we all shared were as good as it gets and their accompanying sauce was spot on Can you tell sauces are important to me? As far as COVID-19 safety goes, I am surprised I didn't leave when I saw most folks, including the bartender and 2 wait staff without masks. Our waiter did have a mask. The tables are spaced wide enough apart too. The menus were paper, but judging by the looks of the menus they were being recycled and not disguarded after each use. Parking can also be tricky. Once I drove around for 10 minutes before I could find a space. I am hoping this pandemic subsides in the near future. I look forward to not having to worry about safety at a restaurant and just to focus on food. City Tavern is trying. read more

We Drive 25 miles to this fine restaurant. I highly recommend the Tuna salad with real tuna strips cooked like you wish. The salad is enormous and tasty. Terrible service at the Bar We went to the bar to get a drink while we waited. The bar was probably 20% full at the time as there was plenty of seating. There were two people behind the bar working. I stood at the bar for no less than 10 minutes waiting for someone to even acknowledge me. One bartender even stood directly in front of me, but would not look at or acknowledge me. That is absolutely absurd. If they were too busy to take your order at least acknowledge a customer. This was our second time at City Tavern and the last time left the same bad feeling about the bar service. It is very unfortnate since the waitress at our table was very good, but the bar gave a bad impression for the whole resturant . Management needs to address this. I ordered the Tavern burger, or something like that..it was $14.99. It came out and was huge! Onion rings, fried pickle spears, tempura bacon...it all sounds delicious, right? Eh...I didn't enjoy. I ate the onion rings and pickles separately. They were ok. The bacon was gross. I thought it'd be extra crispy, but it was mushy and covered in a disgusting batter. The burger tasted very burnt. I got it medium well, and that was fine, but the flavor from the grill was NOT good like it would normally be. I don't recommend. I got a side of mashed potatoes, which were tasteless. I sent my order back, although I hate doing that. I got clam chowder instead. The waitress said they just made it and it was fresh. It was not my favorite either, sadly enough. There were 2 small clams and the rest was hard potatoes and mushy bacon. My friend got the chicken sandwich and fries. She said the burnt taste was there a little bit. The fries were good and the cheese stick wedges were good. I don't know if I really trust too much from here. I would possibly try the nachos if I ever came back. I just wasn't thrilled. read more

I had the clucker (grilled chicken with Gouda pimento cheese spread and tomato relish) with a side of Brussels sprouts. The menu said it had arugula on it but it was a few pieces of spring mix lettuce. I enjoyed my moist chicken and the flavoring of the cheese and tomatoes. I was slightly disappointed in the sprouts as I like mine roasted a little longer. My coworker had plain burger with cheese and a side of fries. She asked for the cheesesteak but apparently they ran out of the meat. We found out that the menu will be changing soon and will include a build your own burger. Rather, we had to ask for the food to go, drop it in the car, only to run see our kid's show on time. Very poor customer service experience. Yesterday I tried City Tavern for the first time, and I was not disappointed! The mozzarella wedges as the appetizer were fresh and delicious! For my meal, I had the black bean burger, and it was so rich in flavor! Nicely sized, with a mixed green salad as my side. I didn't have to send anything back, which is always a plus! OMG!! Here right now and the service we have experienced has been something else. The black manager was the rudest I have ever experienced at any restaurant. Her name is Tiffany and I am also a black American she is seriously the worse!! The kitchen manager Chanel should be in charge of training the staff! Drove to Salisbury to meet my friend, Suzie, who lives in Greensboro. It was a great half way spot to meet. We picked City Tavern for our lunch spot, and I am glad that we did. I had the salad with grilled Ahi Tuna and it was marvelous. And, there was a LOT of it. They didn't skimp on either the fish or the other salad ingredients. I substituted the Asian dressing for the blood orange dressing and it was a great choice. Loved that the server, Tiffany, kept bringing tea refills. One issue that I usually have is that my ice melts before I can finish my tea. That is why I was particularly delighted that Tiffany was proactive in bringing me an extra glass of ice. Good food, quiet enough space - without it being dull - and impeccable service. It was easy finding parking right on the street, near the front door of the restaurant.
