If you're craving barbecue, you can definitely come here and leave satisfied. There are a few things that keep me from considering it one of the best barbecue spots in Concord, though. One of the biggest issues is that they frequently run out of food before closing. If you arrive within an hour or so of closing, there's a pretty good chance that some of the items you want will no longer be available. I understand barbecue is prepared in limited quantities, but it can still be disappointing when the restaurant is open and several menu options are already gone. The customer service can also be a little hit or miss. I've had experiences where the staff were friendly and hospitable and others where the interaction wasn't quite as welcoming. Overall, though, my experiences with the staff have been decent. Another thing I'm not a fan of is being charged for additional barbecue sauce with takeout orders. For a barbecue restaurant, I feel like providing a reasonable amount of sauce with your meal should be part of the experience, so having to pay for extra is unfortunate. Overall, The Smoke Pit is a solid barbecue option. The food is flavorful, well-seasoned, and there are plenty of good choices on the menu. It may not be my top barbecue restaurant in Concord, but if you're craving some good barbecue and get there early enough to have the full menu available, it will definitely satisfy the craving!

Sweet Lew's BBQ -- Texas girl meets Carolina barbecue…read more I grew up in Texas, so barbecue to me means dry rub, wood, smoke and a beautiful smoke ring. Sauce is optional. Give me good meat and a couple of simple sides and I'm happy. I'd had Sweet Lew's bookmarked on Yelp for a while, and I finally had a serious hankering for barbecue. I was dreaming about burnt ends, but those weren't on the menu, so I decided to branch out. First, I love the place itself. Sweet Lew's has its own gravel parking lot, outdoor seating and a bar, and the whole place has this funky, neighborhood barbecue-joint charm. It's small inside and was a little warm when I visited, so I decided to order mine to go. The menu was almost overwhelming for this Texas girl. Brunswick stew? Eastern slaw? BBQ slaw? Hash and rice? I know brisket, beans and potato salad! I wanted to ask questions, but one woman was working the line and people were waiting behind me. I wasn't going to hold everybody up while I got my Carolina barbecue education. So I kept it simple: the $17 build-your-own platter with chopped pork, beans and potato salad. It also came with hush puppies. And goodness, it was delicious. The pork was tender, flavorful and better than I expected. The beans and potato salad hit the spot, and I grabbed some barbecue sauce on my way out. The one I tried leaned heavily toward vinegar rather than the sweeter, slightly spicy sauces I tend to prefer. That's a different barbecue language than the one I grew up speaking, but I enjoyed trying it. Apparently there were other sauces because, as I was leaving, I spotted a gentleman who had seemingly adopted the entire sauce collection at his table. Thanks for sharing, buddy! Now I know for next time. And there WILL be a next time. I'm thinking brisket and ribs so I can get a better taste of what Sweet Lew's does with the smoker. I also need to educate myself on Brunswick stew and the different Carolina slaws before I return. Texas barbecue may have my heart, but Sweet Lew's absolutely earned my respect. The hush puppies were crispy and soft and full of flavor. They were tiny little pops that I could eat so day. Same with the coleslaw. I do not care for coleslaw, but this magic was insane. It made every bite taste so much better. The mac and cheese was also delicious. It was al dente and creamy and rich with flavor. I think most bbq places do mac and cheese a disservice, but not here. So that's it! If you're vegetarian and not vegan and love sides. This is your place. What's on the chopping block? The meats. Maybe it was a bad day because most reviews are great, but that was not my experience. The chicken was beyond overdone. It was practically on the verge of being inedible. The brisket was just as bad. It was so inconsistent. Some was moist, but we were served mostly a brick. Literally a hard chunk that couldn't be penetrated. The pork was good. It was probably the only thing that didn't need to be drowned in sauce. That's my other issue. Why do all the places offer so many sauces?? It's not Taco Bell or McDonald's. What are you trying to hide? Unfortunately, the delicious sides don't make up for the fact that we spent a lot for meats and the majority ended up trashed.

You can order online via Toast tab (I think) but I enjoy restaurants that go to known platforms so I don't have whip out a card and pay when it's already on file. P.S. those burnt ends are beef and they're super salty. I want to enjoy them with less sodium.
