I made a reservation on OpenTable, arrived on time, and was seated immediately. The restaurant looks like a typical rustic BBQ focused family restaurant. I ordered the Carolina Pork with collard greens. My thoughts: - Carolina Pork was good. A small size was more than enough for me. Vinegar sauce really came through, almost a little too much. - Hush puppies were good. The only item that wasn't acidic, so it helped balance my meal. - Collard greens were also good. - Pickles were ok. I tried the well fed combo platter. It's 33 dollars and you get 4 proteins, 2 sides. I got the ribs (8/10), jalapeño cheddar sausage (8/10) the pork (9/10) and the brisket (9/10). I did the mac and cheese shells (6/10) and baked beans (8/10). We also did the skillet corn bread (10/10) and the wings (10/10). I tried their new drink watermelon heart and it was really tasty. Midwood has been my BBQ go to for a while now, and I had the chance to enjoy it last week for the first time in a few years. I really like Midwood. I like their burnt ends and I like their baked beans. Their slaw is pretty rockin' too. So I ordered one of the variety plates (well fed?) to have leftovers (three meals in total) with hush puppies, baked beans, mac and cheese and Texas toast. Carb overload alongside the pulled pork, ribs and chicken. Let me pause here to note that the jalapeño poppers appetizer is delicious and recommended but that was a bit too much for me. :) With regard to the ribs and burnt ends, I suggest getting the standard sauce on them; their in-house stuff is tasty, especially when you add a dash or three of Frank's. The chicken to me pairs well with the mustard sauce, Unremarkable but dependable Q. The pulled pork isn't Lexington level but again, dependable. I was a trifle disappointed in the mac and cheese. Granted it's been a few years but I don't remember them using shells and an inoffensive cheese blend, and it was blander than I recall. Sigh. I really wanted top-notch mac and cheese too. The hush puppies and Texas toast were wonderful as usual. And as I said, I had enough from a $30 meal for two additional meals. All in all, I still prefer Midwood over some of the other joints in Charlotte (now that Queen City Q is gone) but I hope they can see fit to improve the sides a little and maybe be a bit more generous with the beans. I was in town for business and staying at a local hotel. I was alone for dinner and didn't feel like eating room service, so I checked out local places that delivered to my hotel. I stumbled upon Midwood and decided I to get some good southern bbq doordashed to me. I opted to do the birriaque tacos, Mac and cheese, broccoli casserole, and pecan cobbler. I was so happy that everything arrived in one piece. I ended up recording myself doing a taste test and never took actual photos of anything, but the birria tacos, made with pulled pork instead of traditional Mexican style birria, were fantastic. The Mac and cheese was rich and creamy, and the broccoli casserole reminded me of the kind my mama makes. I was so stuffed I had to save the cobbler. Since I waited too long my side of whipped cream turned to melted oil, which is 100% my fault. The pecan cobbler was a huge brick of pecan pie. I had not previously had BBQ in North Carolina. So I did my homework, both on styles and local restaurants (plus if they were open on a Monday evening). That led me to Midwood Smokehouse, and it was definitely the right choice for us. It was a great experience all-around, made even better by quality service and banter with our waiter, Tom. Drinks were a tough choice here (not in a bad way), and we did not immediately realize that there was a QR code on the menu to scan their whiskey pour menu. Since Monday was discounted cocktails night, we split our drink order between cocktails and pours. I was pleasantly surprised to see a less common bourbon, Jefferson's Ocean, available here at a reasonable price. Your food comes out quickly. Since we ordered dry meats (lean brisket and St. Louis dry rubbed ribs), we were given all the sauces from which to choose, which included the North Carolina regionals, their own, and a South Carolina spicy mustard. Honestly, the meats were so well prepared these were not necessary, but we tried every one of them anyway, and we enjoyed all of them. A couple of tips: (1) add a little salt to your collards, it will improve the flavor. (2) Try dipping your Hush Puppies in the South Carolina mustard. By the way, these were unquestionably the best Hush Puppies I've ever had - so many places in the Northeast need to cook them a tad more, thus they are more like Mush Puppies. His customer service was top tier by the way. I could overhear the gentleman before me placing an order for the Thursday special... he was ordering burnt ends. The special consisted of a pork version but I ultimately ordered the beef ones. The meal came with hush puppies and I ordered macaroni and cheese and banana pudding as my sides. I can't lie the food exceeded my expectations. I ordered a beer while I waited for my food but the food was done in little to no time. The restaurant had a lot of local IPAs on tap: Hop, Drop N Roll and Juicy Jay to name a few. I did inquire if they were open on the 4th of July and they are for anyone wondering. This place is located on the backside of the Park Road Shopping Plaza so it is a bit of a hidden gem. Starting with the food, Midwood gets 3/5 stars. While the pulled pork was good, it's hard to appreciate it as much when it's already spicier than I prefer by itself. The sides did help a bit, but they weren't anything I'd come back for on their own. However, going from seated to having food in about 10 minutes is stellar service. This place was on our list of places to try during our trip to Charlotte. It was easy to make a reservation and they have highchairs which was important to us as we have a small toddler. This is not a fancy place so you can really come as you are which is nice. We started off with some cornbread with they bake in a skillet. They also bring home to the table with it for you to put on yourself. It was a delicious so we were happy with our decision to start of with it. My husband went with the Burnt Ends as his meal and I had the Half Rack St. Louis Style Pork Ribs. The portion sizes are pretty large and everything seems to come with hush puppies which I don't mind. Each entree also comes with two sides that you can choose for yourself. I decided on the macaroni and cheese and baked beans which were both full of flavor. My husband went with French fries and a broccoli casserole which he said he enjoyed as well. The Park Road shopping center location of this barbeque chain has been a solid go-to for both dine-in and carryout options for several years. Service is consistently good; servers and front of house staff are pleasant, accommodating and friendly every visit. Seating includes interior and outdoor (portico) options and large parties can use a large private room or tables in the lower section of the restaurant. Food is served quickly and portion sizes are just right. Menu options include salads, wings, ribs and multiple types of meat options. Sides are classics including white (mayo) slaw, collards, mac and baked beans (hot w/jalapenos). The not-so-good : Midwood claims they use wood smokers to prepare their cue. Over the last year and multiple visits, a very distinct and noticeable taste of gas is present. This includes chicken wings, ribs and burnt ends. The chopped pork (sandwich and entree) does not seem to suffer as badly. What is going on Midwood? Are y'all not tasting your product - or do you no longer notice the smell/taste? This is disappointing for an otherwise solid BBQ chain and needs to be addressed. Here's hoping you can work a fix and bring some stars back in our review! read more

I'm a big fan of bbq places, so this one I absololutely love! The selections on the menu are great. The restaurant has a full bar with a decent variety of food on the menu. I usually go for the well-fed combo platter with the brisket, shredded chichen and the jalapeño cheddar sausage (refer to the photos). The ambiance is fun, the service is always great every time I come here, and the common areas are always clean. There is plenty of free parking and a lot to do within walking distance since this restaurant is located in one of the most popular and nicest shopping centers in town (Park Road Shopping Center). THIS is a barbecue joint! All of the reviews mentioning the burnt ends are absolutely correct; they are the star! But, this meal was more of a constellation with all of the stars on the plates. The jalapeno cheese sausages were nicely balanced between meat and seasonings, the sides were homey and fresh, and the hushpuppies were generously poured onto the plates. Oh and I can't forget mentioning the brisket! Coming from Texas, I was hopeful that these would deliver that same joy that the moist brisket from here would imitate some of my faves back home. Boy howdy did they! Perfection. The few, small cons I would have would be that the broccoli salad was just fine, and the ribs were "okay" in my opinion. HOWEVER, they have tons of rib options on different days, so I will withhold any serious judgement on those. (Plus ribs are very much a preference thing.) The ambience was fantastic - I sat at the bar and had a great conversation with the bartender, who explained the menu in detail - she also recommended a fantastic local IPA, which I drank with gusto! I usually don't go crazy for barbecue like this - but this was just great. You'll see that I had four sauces to choose from? Surprisingly enough the one in the upper right of the picture is their house sauce, which is a vinegar based concoction - it was sublime. Nice bbq. I got the regular platter where you get 4 meats, 2 sides, and hush puppies. They throw a few pickles, too. The pulled pork was good. I went for a double portion instead of pulled chicke. I also chose brisket; part lean, and part moist. Ended with a half slab of st louis ribs. You can get with just rub, but i added sauce as well. I prefer sweeter sauces, which they don't have. For the sides, i got sweet potato fries and mac n cheese. Would have like a small side salad. The service was excellent. Sports on tvs. Very nice manager stopped by. Got the pecan cobbler to go. Had a urge for some meat sweats on a Sunday afternoon after a long hike up at Bald Mountain so we decided after we got back to Charlotte to go to Midwood to watch some Sunday afternoon football and have some barbecue. While this isn't my first time eating Midwood, the previous experiences were via corporate catered lunches. And while I loved everything I ate during those lunches with my P&G family, I didn't visit one of their restaurants until now. Definitely glad we did. This location is not too far from us and nicely tucked away in the back of the Park Road Shopping Center. Parking is pretty plentiful and we were able to pull right up front. We were immediately seated at the bar tables upon arrival and service was quick, attentive, and efficient. The restaurant space is about equally divided between the bar area and the restaurant table seating. And it looks like they accommodate large parties and families easily. We tried out the Sunday CAB beef rib special, which must be a true facsimile of the actual rib they threw on Fred Flintstone's car at the beginning of the cartoon, because this thing was ginormous!!! But it was as fall of the bone tender as any smaller version of a rib you could wish for. Definitely the highlight of our meal. We also had the bacon wrapped jalapeño poppers, the burnt ends and the wings and we thoroughly enjoyed them all. The jalapeño poppers were really hot, but we ate them again a second time at home on day two and they were perfectly fine. Probably weren't fully fried the first time around. My original reason for coming was for the burnt ends so I was glad I ordered them. They were definitely everything I expected, I just wanted more for the money! But I was probably being more greedy than I was realistic about price to volume. That being said, I would probably opt for the beef rib special, and hold on the wings and the burnt ends, because it was entirely too much meat for one sitting. My son and I, along with my 2 young grandchildren recently ate at Midwood Smokehouse. We started out with the pimento cheese fries. They were absolutely delicious. The fries were crispy and the pimento cheese was spot-on. I had the brisket with slaw and hushpuppies. The brisket was fork tender and the flavor was amazing. I wasn't a huge fan of the slaw, but not enough to knock off any stars. My son got the burnt ends. He said they were "fire." Not as in hot, but delicious. My grandkids got chicken tenders and ate every bite, which is unusual for them! The service was great!
