Visited Memorial Day weekend and CJ's was very busy all weekend, but the lines moved quickly because there were lots of staff working. We tried the hard ice cream and soft serve and liked both. I was pleasantly surprised by the blueberry soft serve! It tasted like real blueberries and had pieces of fruit mixed in. read more

CJ's is a great ice cream parlor in downtown Bar Harbor. Everyone here is very friendly and crack jokes, despite serving many people very quick. I had the cookie dough and raisin ice cream and it was excellent! My son had the black raspberry and he liked it very much as well. I also liked how even though it was July, the cones were not leaky at all. I definitely recommend this location for ice cream if you are in Bar Harbor. read more

We have been to CJ's twice while visiting Mount Desert Island, and had a pleasant experience both times. One of the staples for us was the dairy free almond milk soft serve. Our orders came fast, and the sizes are reasonable. It's a cute, fun little shop on one of the corners of Main Street and is not far from a parking lot. read more

Overall, a great experience at CJ's Big Dinner in Bar Harbor. While it's a little bit touristy, I'd say just lean into it and enjoy the treats! The menu is EXTENSIVE for an ice cream shop. They have so many scooped flavors (including several blueberry ones), soft serve, shakes, and the list goes on. We were happily surprised with big scoops and very tasty ice cream. It tastes like a homemade ice cream, and has a lovely texture. The line may look long, but I will say it moves along quite quickly. There's a few tables on the side of the building, which are nice to sit at and enjoy. Be warned they're a cash-only location, but given that I would say the prices and location it's worth the trade off. I'd happily come back to this place for another round. read more

It's a picturesque quaint shop on Main Street. It is cash only but I feel like they give you a decent amount. Service was really fast but there was only one other person in the shop when I went. I got the blueberry soft serve and it was good. It was sweet which I liked but it had what I would call seeds in it. I wish it was just 100% smooth. Would I get it again? Looked so cute on first glance. Love a good ice cream shop - but this was a total disappointment, customer service was subpar. They don't allow flavor trials. Fine. Went for the coffee and brownie in a waffle cone. Took one bite and realized there was no coffee to be found and the brownie was super stale. Spoke to the clerk about it- one would think they would remedy this quickly. The response I got "you can buy another one" Flavor misrepresentation combined with no taste testing, adding on refusal to make it right. I would give it a 0 if I could. Steer clear. read more

Super cute ice cream place that always has a line; however the line moves quickly. There's a ton of flavors including chocolate, vanilla, and wild Maine blueberry soft serve (you can swirl chocolate or blueberry with vanilla as well). The flavors are on a chalkboard outside the shop but if you're unsure what they are you should try to peek around before you're called up to order because it's a bit of a madhouse inside and they don't do samples. Stopped in for a cup of ice cream after our meal. It was busy but got my order in right away. Friendly staff. I wasn't paying attention to or didn't research before stopping in that it was cash only. CJs is a vegan paradise for icecream a holics- there were 16 vegan flavors!!! We tried 3- the chocolate vanilla swirl cone was surprising with an excellent rich chocolate swirl which diddnt overpower the vanilla. The raspberry vanilla was to die for- totally rich with real raspberries and vanilla- impossible to distinguish from real dairy. This ice cream was phenomenal! I am vegan, so I loved all the vegan options! Vegan soft serve, vegan hard ice cream, vegan waffle cones, vegan milkshakes! Awesome!!! The guy behind the counter (shaved dark hair) was rude as hell. He was impatient taking our order then told us that they accept cash only. No sign at the door, only a small sign at the register AFTER you're holding the ice cream you just ordered. With ice cream melting down my arm, I asked the jerk if I could finish my cone and walk to get some cash. He told me, no, please get cash from the ATM at the end of the counter." YES OF COURSE! They have their own cash atm at the register with an outrageous fee. It's a racket. Don't spend your money there...and if you do bring fricken cash. read more

Stopped in CJs after dinner at a local restaurant for an ice cream dessert. Husband had the sea salt caramel ice cream and I had coffee. The portions were huge. We ordered the smallest portions and they were way too much. I'd love if they offered one smaller as I ended up tossing a good chunk of my ice cream. Service was great. We got it to go but I saw lots of people milling about and eating near the front door. Nice stop. read more

Ice cream should make you happy. They make it suck. My mom has an allergy to nuts and politely asked if they could rinse the scoop in between uses to avoid contamination. The employee rudely said "I will not do that". Please don't give them business. read more

Incredibly helpful and fun, welcoming staff. Had very diverse flavors as well as allergy accommodations (gluten, lactose intolerance, etc) and notifications in flavor listings. There seemed to be a flavor and option for everyone. I got the grapenuts ice cream, and my son and husband enjoyed their flavors as well (and they are quite the icee cream aficionados). For those In the Midwest, the texture reminded me of Braum's ice cream (creamy, dense and smooth). The chunk distribution of materials (grapenuts, cookie dough, etc) was evenly dispersed as well. The ONLY issue is that they are a CASH ONLY business, and while they have an ATM in the corner, the machine only accepts debit cards. (Avoid awkward moments by taking cash with you to this venue.) read more

CJ's has delicious ice cream, with a variety of flavors. However, I was a Maine tourist and I had been trying different types of blueberry ice creams from different shops. I ordered a blueberry and vanilla swirl with chocolate syrup. I was disappointed to find out that my ice cream just tasted like vanilla. The ice cream was delicious but I was really looking forward to a strong blueberry flavor. I believe this shop is a local favorite, but if you're looking to try exceptional blueberry ice cream, try it at Jordan's Pond House in Acadia Park or at Jordan Pond Ice Cream & Fudge Shop in Bar Harbor. It's 2025 and they're still using Covid as an excuse. Ok, so the ice cream is...ice cream. But you'd better have cash. God forbid they should have to pay 2-3% of their $11 waffle cone to the credit card companies (yes, for 1 scoop of ice cream)! One big PRO: they have lactose-free ice cream for those who need it. But I asked for a sample of a flavor that was unfamiliar to me (silly me) and was told that they don't do samples...because of Covid. Really? That was 5 years ago. Move on. You can't give me a tiny taste when you're making a ridiculous profit margin on ice cream? (Did I mention the $11 waffle cone above). After owning an ice cream store for 5 years, I consider myself well versed in ice cream. Everywhere we travel, I try ice cream. This place had lots of flavors from which to choose. The display cases looked awful and needed defrosted. I settled on a scoop of something called Maine something, which was vanilla ice cream with peanuts, peanut butter cups and something else. What I basically got was a scoop of vanilla ice cream with one part having a bit of toppings in it. The ice cream was not rich and creamy, which means cheap ice cream. My husband ordered a milk shake and he got flavored milk. The shake was so runny that he tossed it, which is not at all like him. For $17.50 that has to be paid in cash as they don't use credit cards, I was immensely disappointed. read more

I know they don't have great reviews but THAT BLUEBERRY SOFT SERVE really hit the spot. It was blazing hot outside and that soft serve was so good, creamy and I've also never had blueberry soft serve with real blueberry bits! If you just want a taste they offer a kid's size! However, this year I was disappointed to see that they no longer are offering the maple butter, even for an upcharge. Please bring this back, it really took the popovers to another level! Maybe whip it into thawed butter instead of hand mixing it to make it easier? The whipped butter is easier to dip in and spread anyway. The new pre-packaged / mass produced butter packs take away from the appeal of a freshly-made popover. Sometimes in the morning it can be a little crowded in here with people waiting for their coffee / drinks to be made by a counter not far from where you place your order, so if you're walking in and haven't ordered yet then check if the people standing around are just waiting on coffee or waiting to order. It would be a nice improvement to see some separation (maybe with some ropes or floor markings) to make it more clear who is in line to order and who is waiting for their beverage to be made. It's worth noting it's takeout only and there's nowhere inside to sit, but there are some benches just outside on the sidewalk where you can have your popover and coffee.

Their communal bathroom upstairs for customers was a great surprise, clean, updated and smelled amazing! They have some interesting donuts on the menu and flavors rotate. The day we were there they had a carrot cake donut which I have never seen anywhere and it looked wonderful. My husband went with a safer option and just chose a glazed chocolate to take with him into the park for an after-hike snack. He said it was fresh, moist, and delicious. I saw smoothies and other goodies on the menu here and the staff behind the counter were really friendly.
