Obsessedddddddddddd with Pugnuts! From the vibe on the outside to the delicious ice cream, you cannot go wrong with stopping in here. On my wife and I's Maine Ice Cream trek, this was our second stop. It took so long to figure out which flavor to get because they have such good combos. They, of course, have the traditional flavors but they were very inventive with others which I always love. The flavor I ended up getting was something along the lines of coffee and brownies? I can't exactly remember the name because they change their specialty flavors daily but mannnnnnnnn it was so good! My wife got strawberry; deliciously simple. Service was kind and efficient and it was a lot larger inside than we expected so plenty of room to sit and enjoy your tasty treats. I would fly back to Maine just for Pugnuts. Went to Pugnuts on the recommendation of a fried, so I was stoked to go. My excitement was short lived. Very disappointed with the ice cream and the service. I went in all excited and told the girl behind the counter it was my first time. No response. I ordered the coffee ice cream with chocolate chunks. How disappointing. The ice cream barely tasted of coffee, it was more like muddy vanilla. The chocolate chunks were cookie bits, not chunks. Luckily I only got a single scoop. My companion got Fluffernutter which tasted like a random chunk of peanut butter on vanilla, not anything close to marshmallow. It was ok, but not worth any hype. The single scoop cost 6 bucks. Very good homemade gelato, great customer service, and excellent Pug decor :-) We go to Maine every year for our family vacation and ever since Pugnuts opened it has become our go-to post hike spot for a summer treat! The gelato is very smooth and rich. For an added price you can get your gelato scooped in a fish cone- very cute but, personally, not worth the extra fee. The lobster claw shaped ice cream cones/sticks are a very unique item- I haven't come across them elsewhere in Maine. My partner always gets mint chocolate chip with rainbow sprinkles. I tried several fruit flavors before settling on c Restaurant is very clean and the customer service is great. They are willing to let you try as many flavors as you want, which is good for the more exotic choices. Our family friend lives in a nearby town and says the Annual Pug Jamboree and Pug Parade is not to miss. She and her Pug dress up in costume and join the other Maine pugs for some fun and games. Update- we have come back here during the COVID-19 pandemic and were very pleased with how PugNuts is implementing safety measures. Wonderfully set up for the CV situation. Great intercom for ordering. Simple system and you get ice cream fast. Staff friendly and helpful. I had been waiting to try for months. Unfortunately, taste wasn't close to the reputation. No hot fudge and my gelato tasted like wood thanks to the wood spoon. I applaud caring for the environment, but if you want to spend some money for hopefully good tasting ic/gelato, better also bring your own spoon. Otherwise I suspect all flavors will taste the same - wood! Reminded me of Italian Ice from the ice cream truck as a kid. That always tasted like the wood spoon too! They are so friendly here. Anything you want to try, they're more than willing for you to have a taste. Any questions? Just ask! They'll happily answer it with a smile. My wife got the butter pecan and she said it was the best ice cream she's ever had. I got the blueberry ice cream and it was pretty good seeing as though I'd never had such a thing before. I'm severely disappointed in this place as much as I wanted to love it. As a person with a severe dairy allergy (NOT lactose intolerance - a lot of people don't seem to understand this distinction) I was excited to see that they advertised non dairy flavors. Upon walking in, I saw zero flavors of sorbet available. This has been true the two or three times I've been inside, even though they claim to offer sorbet on their website. There was a sign advertising three non dairy flavors of "ice cream" - banana almond, coconut, and another one I can't recall. Okay, not a huge selection, but I can live with it. I asked for banana almond in a cone. Something was mumbled to me about consistency and they'd have to serve it in a cup with a cone on top. Oookay, fine. This should have been my first warning sign. Then they had to go "in the back" to get it, and whatever was served to me was put in a blender. I'm pretty sure it was just frozen bananas and almond milk. The consistency was terrible - icy, and nothing like real ice cream. The flavor was lacking, too. I'm pretty sure I paid upward of $8 for the privilege of eating this flavorless concoction. With so many non dairy options out there (Ben and Jerry's, anyone?) I know this can be executed well, and my expectations aren't too high. Actually, there's a place in Bar Harbor, CJ's, that offers six or seven non dairy options daily - two or three sorbets, two or three soy ice creams (like chocolate graham cracker, cherry chocolate chip, vanilla peanut butter) in the display case, and an almond milk chocolate/vanilla swirl soft serve. I wish this place wouldn't even bother considering themselves non dairy friendly. Try harder, Pugnuts. Your regular ice creams look fantastic, but this non dairy thing is a sham. read more

Pugnut's, where do I begin...? Let's start with the actual ice cream: Pugnuts Ice Cream Shop has very cool flavors like Blue Berry, Nutella, Chocolate Gelato, Lemon, and Cotton Candy. But they kind of lack for flavor. They do have different cakes and Lucy's Granola though. The staff there is very nice and super helpful, but can sometimes get annoyed. You can also taste test which is good. They have little gifts and snacks there for anyone who might want to grab a little gift or something. Pugnut's also has merch ( shirts, etc.) It is overpriced there, so this might just be a treat for some. This is why my rating is at four stars: because it cost more for less. It's one of the better places for ice cream though so I recommend it over others. Have fun! read more

This is a cute shop in the small coastal town of Surry, down the Blue Hill Peninsula. The signage really draws you in...I mean the shop is called Pugnuts. I've wanted to go in here for the longest time, just based on the name. The ice cream is good. I had caramel cashew and enjoyed it. There was the right amount of cashew and caramel throughout, a good blend of all flavors. I ordered a medium dish, and it was the right amount for me. Quantity is not quality. The shop is cute. It looks like an ice cream shop. Light and airy inside. It is cute. Digital screens behind the counter give prices and options. I really don't like this. I know, it is strange, but it is like McDonalds or Burger King with the digital screens. I was really put off. You have this quaint shop, with large TV screens on the wall scrolling through options. The juxtaposition of the cuteness of the shop, then contrasted by the technology seems contradictory. It becomes stock at that point. I wish there were a few more options for ice cream. The flavors are split between gelato and ice cream. And for two medium sized dishes it was $10, but any add ons jacks the price up. So, for dishes, its reasonable, but go past that, it becomes pricey and pretentious. read more
