They advertise heavily the fact that they have sandwiches. There are no sandwiches. The only "food" are sad looking refrigerated noodles. The server was very rude to both my party and the workers in the back. The chocolate soft serve was amazing, saving this from one star. My boyfriend and I were visiting Maine and got dinner in SW Harbor, so naturally we wanted to get ice cream after. I couldn't find the menu of flavors/items online nor on any social media so I called the store to ask if they had any vegan flavors. The worker was very nice and told me they had 4 flavors! I do wish they listed flavors online though! We went about an hour before close and luckily got there before a bunch of other people did. My boyfriend is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts and while the employee was very helpful with identifying which ice creams had nuts in them (they had a poster on the wall as well as a sheet) we noticed almost every flavor that didn't contain nuts was right next to a nut-containing flavor, which could increase the risk of cross contamination. The employee did wash his hands and the scooper but I wish this spot just separated the nut-containing and nut-free flavors! Very easy switch. I got the vegan blueberry crumble which was super yum, and my boyfriend got the S'mores which he also enjoyed! I did like that there were some sodas/snacks on the shelves and souvenirs too. The Salt Shop has a big, bright rainbow sign on the storefront window stating "Everyone is Welcome." Other than the store's hours of operation, it's the only sign. So, when I came into the shop with my 7-pound mutt in a dog stroller and waited in line for 10 minutes, how was I to know dogs aren't allowed? There is no signage letting customers know it's not a dog-friendly establishment and not everyone is welcome. That's fine. The owner has the right not to allow dogs in. I get it. But, what is not okay is speaking rudely to patrons. Like the old saying goes, "It's not WHAT you say. It's HOW you say it." And, the way in which I was spoken to was completely out of line and inappropriate. After talking with some friends, I learned this behavior is nothing new. Others have witnessed other pup parents being read the riot act. Many shops and eateries in Southwest Harbor are dog-friendly. The drug store, the gift shops, Eat-a-Pita restaurant all welcome dogs. And, there is an ice cream shop just around the corner, so it's not as if the Salt Shack is the only place in town to get a cone. If the Salt Shop doesn't allow dogs, put a sign letting customers know the store is not dog-friendly. And, while they're putting up the sign, maybe they should remove the giant bowl of water set out for the unwelcome pups, which so ironic. For now, I'm heading around the corner to spend my money at an establishment that knows the importance of treating others with dignity and kindness. read more

I owned an ice cream store for 5 years so I learned a lot about ice cream. I stop at stores everywhere as I love it. This wasn't only an ice cream store, but they also sold some desserts, snacks, and lots of mugs, etc. I really wanted blueberry ice cream but they didn't have any so I settled on a soft serve swirl. I wanted sugar cone but they said they couldn't do it in a sugar cone. Oh yes you can! You just need to make the swirls more compact so it doesn't get too high. Disappointed they wouldn't do it. The soft serve was decent and the small size was plenty big. Seems like everywhere we have gone in Maine we spend $18 on 2 items. read more

We stopped by Salt Shop for a quick slice of blueberry pie and some ice cream. We were served quickly and were outside digging in within 3 minutes. The blueberry pie was incredible. Excellent filling and a great crust! We got one scoop of blueberry ice cream as well. All in, it ran us $10, SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive than elsewhere on MDI. Wow. This was the rudest ice cream shop experience I've ever had. No samples given, that's fine, but rude, snappy and server rushing us out the door is not fine. The shop was open for 4 more hours so we were not there at closing time. When I asked for napkins after we paid you would have thought I asked for free ice cream! We really enjoyed the salted caramel (nice crunch bits and not too Caramel sweet) and roasted coconut (great texture). There are seats outside and tables on the side. Exceptional flavor!! We had moose trackers and campfire s'mores, rich and sweet but so fresh-tasting.

We were staying is Southwest Harbor on a family trip to Maine and Salt Shop was a great stop. We got ice cream for 5 including 2 toddlers and it was delicious. Blueberry ice cream was a must! Congratulations on three weeks of business, guys! Food here is PHENOMENAL. So we're a big party of 11 people. We ended up in the area to do some kayaking on vacation (We're from Virginia + N/S Carolina!) and we actually stumbled in here unintentionally because the bakery we were looking for closed... indefinitely hahaha. The Salt Cafe impressed us ALL with delicious food, extremely friendly and personable service, and a SUPER CUTE and welcoming environment. Not a single one of us found a negative thing to say :) We were so impressed by the coffee ice cream that we ordered six cones and several treats. What a let down! This place was a fav for us 2 summers ago. We went back several times for sandwiches and ice cream. A quaint little food stop! If you want a sandwich, can I recommend the Sorelle? My fave! The Ham Jam is delicious as well! And I cannot get enough of their potato salad, I highly recommend that as your side since you get to pick one! I can never decide what I want for a baked good, the Whoopie Pies are phenomenal, definitely not what you find on the counter at the gas station. The brownies and 7 layer bars are a grand choice as well. If you are lucky enough to be in when they put out a batch of scones, the cheddar scallion are so savory and delicious! They carry a great, local coffee that is available hot or as cold brew. They rotate in different ice cream choices so they don't always have the same ol' thing. They have some great gift choices, a couple shelves with a rainbow variety of beautiful and superior quality aluminum water bottles that are locally etched with our beloved Mount Desert Island. Fun and unique sauces, salts, bar mixers, etc to keep cooking interesting, some fun bags and fishermen's rope doormats. My go to place in the summer. I love their sandwiches, deserts coffees, lemonade. The crew is always lovely and it's a must stop.

Our favorite stop when in town! The cutest vibe and merch- I picked up a local MDI mug and some great gifts for family for the holidays- perfect stocking stuffers from hot sauce to coffee beans to a handmade lobster rope door mat- beyond cute! I usually get an iced coffee and a grab & go wrap...but don't sleep on the potato salad! Yum!! Also, can't beat the prices. Coming from a busy city down south everything seemed more than reasonable for the portion sizes you get! Highly highly recommend making Salt Shop a destination!
