I'm a big fan of the ambiance CK Cafe has to offer. I love the blooming teas and the outdoor patio where people are free to smoke and socialize for hours. However, Mrs. Pong is extremely rude and from what I've heard so is Mr. Pong. The drinks are quite large and I for one have a hard time finishing them. One night I went with a friend and we wanted to share a drink instead of wasting half a glass of tea. I was very rudely approached by Mrs. Pong while she yelled at me and said "ONE CUSTOMER ONE DRINK". I nodded my head yes, shocked that some mean asian lady was yelling at me. Thus she kept yelling at me until I said "OKAY". She storms back inside. I angrily and reluctantly grab my wallet and walk inside to buy a drink. As I was paying Mrs. Pong shoves a sign in my face that says every person that walks in must buy at least one drink. She then points to the "We reserve the right to refuse service" sign. I nod and shrug it off. About an hour later, my boyfriend and his friend joins us. They sit down and Mrs. Pong comes up to the table again and is rambling on about the one person one drink rule. My boyfriend and his friend nod their heads yes and say they will buy something after they finish their smoke. One of my friends had left their shopping bag on the table behind ours by mistake. Less than 2 minutes after Mrs. Pong rudely approached my boyfriend and friend she grabs the shopping bad and in a hostile manner asks if the bag is ours. We say yes and gives my friend the dirtiest look and walks away. Despite the rude costumer service, CK Cafe is a great place for a laid back night. read more

This is one of my favorite places to study and escape to when school's in session. They have a variety of delicious teas--and some of the ones that have a blooming flower. It's a local, POC-owned business that's a staple for me in a sea of trendier, touristy and less laid-back Claremont places. The owner is super accomodating, especially since the cafe stays open late during the semester for students. I only have good things to say about the service, so seeing these negative reviews is upsetting. I'll definitely be coming back here as long as I'm in Claremont. read more

OWNER LIED FOR THE SAKE OF A SALE I went in to CK's and asked the male owner if I could have a smoothie with almond milk, due to my lactose intolerance. He said, "no almond milk" and I said, "oh, do you have anything blended that doesn't have milk?" And again, he responded, "no almond milk". As he stood watching me like a hawk, I pondered over the menu for about 45 seconds, searching for any milk substitutions, but was unable to find one. I thanked him and started to head out, to which he responded, "We have soy milk". I thought it odd that he hadn't suggested that the first two times I inquired about dairy-free options, but ordered a "soy milk" smoothie, anyway. Friends, let me tell you, the smoothie he made me WAS NOT DAIRY-FREE. Half way through, my stomach flipped, an all too familiar feeling for those who do not handle dairy well. I was in so much pain, I had to throw away my smoothie and leave the cafe. This was at 3pm, and it is now 9pm, I am still curled up in bed, in extreme pain as a result of consuming milk. I believe he realized he was about to lose a sale, and lied about having "soy milk" so as to get me to purchase something from him. I know the difference between soy and dairy, and can 100% confirm that I was given the latter. This place is an absolute joke. The owners (old Asian couple) could not hate their lives and jobs more. They are miserable a**holes to everyone, every time I come in, and I have witnessed them throw people out for next to no reason... pulling out a bottle of water to sip on, charging a phone in the outlets apparently not provided for customers (*note sarcasm*), having another individual arrive to study and having said individual not purchase anything immediately upon arrival... Such a shame that this is how they treat their customers. I had already had enough of their rudeness and pathetic attitudes, but the fact that THE OWNER lied and basically jeopardized my health/safety for the sake of a sale has permanently convinced my friends and me to take our business elsewhere. Thank god my lactose intolerance isn't life threatening, but I worry for those who suffer chronically and more seriously, as well as those who are vegan and do not consume animal products. read more

I have brought so many family, friends and life time long faithful customers here. My boyfriend and I come here weekly to study, today my boyfriend accidentally forgot his wallet at home. As we were doing homework the owner rudely came up to us and made us leave I would buy 20 teas if I had my wallet I am on my way home now and do not anticipate ever coming back. I loved this place and would come all the time and have bought several different items when I come. I basically live here while I'm going to school. They have great tea, I personally enjoy chatting with every person I've met behind the counter, and it's the perfect place for me to come study, hang out alone, or to bring my friends. I don't personally smoke, but if you do then the outside seating area is perfect for that -- if you want to avoid the smoke, inside seating is for you. No complaints here whatsoever and if you have to leave before you finish your tea, you can get it to-go, which is one of my favorite things about here. Okay so those pictures of the lady are mine. I was sitting inside doing my homework today, the woman from the photos comes to me and points at the sign behind me that says customers must buy something to stay. I had not bought anything yet, but I told her I would run out to get my wallet really soon. She walked away then came back telling me to buy something or get out. So I went to my car to grab my wallet, came back and bought something. We made eye contact when I gave her the money, she said thank you. Then a few minutes later (after attending a few customers), she comes up to me with their "We have the right to refuse service to anyone" sign. I was surprised and asked what she was trying to say. She kept saying "I dun kno da English" and just told me to to get out. I asked her why she was kicking me out, she only responded in the same way. I began to pack my things, dumbfounded. Just before I left, I snapped some photos of her and asked her one more time why she was kicking me out. She stayed quiet and then threatened to call the police. I laughed and walked out. The owner of the place (who did speak English) arrived and her employee explained her side of the story. I tried explaining mine but was constantly interrupted. The blooming flower teas are so good! The only down side is that the outside patio always is full of cigarette smokers so the smell can be really awful. The owner has kind of a short fuse but can be really nice once he warms up to you! read more

This was mine and my husbands first time coming here and I asked what do you recommend, he pretty much told me to grab a tea and bring it to the counter without recommending anything. Then a girl ordered a Taro drink and accidentally picked up someone else's order and told her in front of everyone that's not your drink Taro is purple and that's not your drink. I felt a need to update this review after having spent more time here. The lady that used to run this place was almost (ok, not really..) charming in her own surly way. But she's gone. And the guy who's taken over? What a dick! I'm pretty sure unless you're the Soup Nazi, being a total asshole isn't good for business. He scowls at all the customers like Clint Eastwood in a bizarro-world "Gran Torino". One minute ago a very nice girl went up to the counter asking for some more honey.. "NO HONEY!!" he screamed. "Pleeease?" she pleaded. "NNNOOOOOO HONEYYY!!!" he shouted, even more loudly. She went away. This cannot be good for attracting repeat customers. How hard is it not to be a total cock to people who give you money? I'm pretty sure it's free. I only come here still because CK is the only place in the area that's open late and, since Claremont is in the middle of nowhere, I have no place else I can go aside from just staying in my house (which gets boring). Sometimes I drive half an hour to late night coffeeshops in Pasadena and Fullerton, just so I don't have to crawl back to CK and bizarro Clint. I've been here before but never noticed how terrible the service actually is. I came here tonight with a group of friends to celebrate a birthday; drink some tea and smoke hookah. A few of us ordered our teas and the older man who I'm assuming runs this joint, was incredibly unpleasant and rude to us all. Not just us though, but pretty much every other person who went up to order. One girl, he yelled at for not understanding him, and yes, he is quite hard to understand but he shouldn't be so damn rude. We're trying to understand sir, but it's quite difficult as your accent is so heavy. A friend got up to request a hookah with two hoses for us and the man would frequently ignore him to help other walk-in customers with their drinks and snacks. So it took us about a good 15 minutes to actually get our request through and another 15 for him to heat up the one coal. After finally bringing out the hoses, he then had the audacity to stand, place his hand on his hip and stare us down, while we were trying to sit and relax, drink some tea and have a smoke. Suddenly he began to yell (and was quite irritated with us And I'm not sure why), "DONT YOU KNOW HOW TO SMOKE?! YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO SMOKE!", repeatedly. It was embarrassing and a few of us honestly could not help but laugh which I'm sure irritated him more. Anyway, he was quite mad and gave us a tutorial on how to smoke. The dos and donts which were still hard to even understand but it was entirely unnecessary. We know how to smoke. We just wanted to have a nice night. It still was because we definitely got a good laugh out of it, especially when my friend asked him how his night was going and he completely ignored him! No acknowledgement whatsoever. 2 stars for the tea though, because the teas are incredibly delicious. Just take it easy on the honey, kind sir. I wanted honey with my tea, not tea with my honey. Whenever I am in Claremont, which is often, I always want to come to this place. The owner makes my friends and me laugh, because he has an intimidating business manner. His consistent sell is, "honey or no honey?" (honey)..."Four dollars!" I know he's harmless though, and my friends also find the charm in it. I always tip a dollar because of the huge variety of loose leaf tea, with a color-code for herbal, caffeinated, non-caffeine, etc. Plus, the owner actually means well. Sometimes people smoke hookah outside, but I've brought my friends with little kids here and it still can be a kid-friendly environment. The jars have all the tea leaves in them, which are always an exotic blend of color and amazing aroma, with some naturally flavored. Coffee, snack, tobacco purchase options and late hours, with indoor and outdoor seating make this the perfect place to get together to study, or simply have a date or get together. The old man really was in a bad mood and gave me and my boyfriend a sh*t time at the Cafe. Because I wanted to order and pay separately from my boyfriend, I stood back to wait for the old man to prepare his drink, but the old man yelled at me and rushed me to come order. Later, my boyfriend used a VISA gift card with a balance of $3 to pay for a $3 water bottle. Even though the transaction went through and emptied his card, the old man's card reader did not work and the old man made my boyfriend pay again. The old man actually refunded my boyfriend afterwards when he found out that the transaction did go through, but he still had the same terrible attitude. We're not coming back. read more
