Cool little coffee spot located at the College in Claremont. Place is very busy because it's on campus. Ordered 2 iced americanos ($15ish for both) and it took a little while for them to get them out to us! They ask for your initials and this is how they call it out for pick up. This is a little confusing especially if they get your initials wrong. I finally got a chance to check out this student-lead coffee shop within Scripps College. The place was very lively and filled with students. It is located within a courtyard so student where coming and going as I was waiting to order. I grabbed a hot vanilla latte and a decaf cappuccino. The vanilla latte was fine. No complaints from my boss about her cappuccino. Only reason for the less-than-perfect rating was that it felt a little disorganized and messy in the lobby. There was a lot going on and a lot of things all over the place and it was a little hard to take it all in when entering. I look forward to trying some of their seasonal drinks soon. read more

Came here for a little pick me up today since I didnt sleep well. Got the nitro coffee sweetened with vanilla and some half and half. Taste pretty good as far as nitro goes maybe next time I'll sweeten it more aggressively. Workers are friendly and you get your coffee fast. I like that they offer a bring your own mug option to make it cheaper even if I couldn't take advantage of that today it probably benefits all the nearby students who frequent the shop. read more

Came here with my sister, who goes to Scripps. I ordered the matcha chacha, and she ordered bowl of soul. Both were pretty good. You can specify sweetness, too, so I asked for mine unsweetened. If you bring your own cup or container, then you can get the prices listed on the board... and you can get it filled to the size of your cup! Otherwise, I think it's $1 extra. The baked goods looked pretty yummy. My sister said it was a student (or maybe former student) who makes the baked goods. There were donuts, cookies, pastries... will definitely try some next time! read more

The Motley has a special place in my heart. It's the perfect combination of cozy, welcoming, and energetic. There are a few different seating options (communal table, couch, smaller tables, on the stage...and more) and it is a great place to socialize, work, or just relax. My all time favorite drink is the bowl of soul with coconut creme tea (hot). It originally comes with Earl grey (I think) but the coconut tea adds a sweet flavor that I personally enjoy. The tea steeps in hot soy milk and is flavored with honey and cinnamon. Drinking it truly feels like "a bowl of soul". It's great on a cold or rainy day and it always lightens my mood. Highly recommend! In the summer, I really like the get the "make your own smoothie". It is especially good with granola and honey! Tastes like a blended fruit bowl! It's amazing. A crowd favorite is also the matcha cha cha which is just a matcha latte (hot or cold). You can also tell them to add different flavors to it! I've heard the white chocolate syrup is good with that. Another yummy treat to try is their bagels (+cream cheese)!! I don't know what it is, but the bagels at the motley are delicious. You can toast them up yourself on the counter to the right of the cashier. I personally like the cinnamon raisin or blueberry but they have many many sweet and savory flavors. They also have a student bake-off every semester where the winners get to sell their goods in store. These are often very very good so definitely worth a try if you see it in the display case! read more

Motley is a student-run coffee shop on the Scripps College campus, and for being a locally sourced business I'm happy to support it! Their baked goods are either made by students on campus or purchased from local bakeries. Their croissants are especially delicious, being massive, buttery and flaky! For drinks, I've found after much trial and error that their hot mochas and iced lattes are their most consistent and good drinks. My favorite is to order an iced latte with half a pump of vanilla and half a pump of rose. I'm personally not a fan of the matcha cha cha because the matcha flavor is very diluted. But their espresso drinks? Yes! read more

I like the idea of the motley: student run, accommodating for students with dietary restrictions, free-trade, lots of options etc. But the drinks here are a little pricy, especially if you aren't on the meal plan and need a to-go cup (extra $1). It's not like the Motley doesn't make a lot of money, they bought a Scripps van and give away mugs and scholarships, but I kinda wish they'd just make their drinks cheaper. The baristas will take your student ID when you pay with flex if you are eating in to ensure that you won't steal their mugs. However, if you don't pay with flex (and pay with cash instead), they usually don't ask to take your card, aka paying with cash is an easy way to get around the $1 charge for a to-go cup. What you do with the motley mugs when you're finished is up to you.... I like doing work in the Motley, but I'm not sure how often they clean off their tables. I don't like getting little grease spots on all my papers from little crumbs and spills left by the previous customer. read more

One of my favorite places to go for an afternoon pick me up. The smoothies at the Motley are some of my favorite, especially their Berry Manilow. It's awesome that it's student run but sometimes it is a little slow. They also run out of items quite frequently so make sure you're open to trying other drinks as well. The cashier greeted us with, "what do you want!?" with scoffs throughout the simple coffee order. Extremely unprofessional immature staff, and a horrible place to sit down and study. 18. I rarely drink coffee, but if I'm on campus and need an extra boost, I'm here. Personally, I find the drinks here to be stronger than those made at Starbucks. Then again, I'm naturally sensitive to caffeine. The chai latte is my default, and although strong, I still love it, hot or iced. They also have baked goods and snacks if you want to grab a bite too. I've only been to the Motley in the morning, and it's always crowded. I haven't managed to find a seat when I'm here. But the popularity of this place probably reflects the quality of the drinks. Located on the Scripps College campus, this is a completely student-run coffee shop so expect this place to not open during the summer, winter/fall/spring break. I suggest checking the Scripps College academic calendar and go from there. If you're not sure about whether they are open or not, call them. If they don't pick up, they're most likely not open. An eco-friendly and politically correct place. It's hard to find a table sometimes because a lot of students study here. This place gets training and coffee beans from Klatch Coffee so you know you're getting some quality coffee. Many of the baristas will even make latte art for you. Price is also very reasonable ( actually, a lot cheaper) compared to other coffee shops. A double latte is about $2.35. Unlike other coffee shops, all espresso drinks are given 2 shots unless you specify. I know places like Klatch , Starbucks and Dripp have separate orders for single, double, triple etc. Personal favorites: Straight latte. Classic. Orange ceasar- like an orange creamsicle Matcha cha cha- green tea frap-like if blended, nice matcha latte if hot Mexican hot chocolate- a kick of cinnamon for extra flavor Iced white mocha- hard to describe what the flavor is like but this is my go-to cold drink Love all the smoothies except for the one with raspberry and chocolate. Cari Starlight- a blended drink with mint and chocolate. YUM! I add extra espresso for my daily caffeine needs. Bowl of soul- SOOOO DELICIOUS. Tea, honey, and steam soy milk. topped off with some cinnamon. YUM! If you have a hard time picking a drink from their huge menu, feel free to ask a barista and she/he will help you. OHHHHHHH. One more thing. DRINK YOUR STUFF AT THE SHOP OR BRING YOUR OWN MUG AND YOU GET A DOLLAR DISCOUNT. The price they show on the board is the discounted price so add an extra dollar if you take your drink to go. They do this in order to encourage people to use reusable cups. read more

Good place to study! I'm not sure if I should post this here, but shhh...I'm not a Scripps student. My classmate stumbled upon this gem of a coffee shop and we mosied on over. Space is kinda tight here as they have a mini stage for performers. But there's a good amount of tables and chairs and everyone's so friendly they don't mind if you sit with them. If you prefer some fresh air, study outside with the tranquil sounds of the water coming from the fish statue. I wish my school was this beautiful and study-inducing. Service gets tied up here since there's only 3 girls working and a very steady stream of people floating in. Be patient, they're trying their hardest...at least I think they are. I read here that they'll take your ID just so you don't take their cups, but honestly, who would steal cups?! *raises hand* jk. Coffee here's pretty good and strong. I would study here again. But beware, you need to be a student to access their wifi. read more

(unless you're a Mudder, in which case you'll always have too much every week) Not a Claremont student? Sucks for you. Motley is still tasty though. It's a very hipster-styled coffee shop. Most of their treats are vegan. All of them are at least vegetarian. God, vegetarians. Drinks are really good. Their menus got all sorts of interesting things; I order Mexican hot chocolate and iced coffee the most because the Mexican hot chocolate is AMAZING and I love iced coffee, but I've also tried this thing called Kari Starlight, chai tea, thai iced tea (which was good, but doesn't taste like thai iced tea...) italian sodas... Yep, the Motley is really great. Other things... they sell chocolate bars, which is awesome, along with other strange random treats like dried cherries and ginger candies and stuff. The fridge is also stocked with way hipster cold drinks, like Metromint (water, flavored with mint. will run you a very pretentious 2.75) and Hanes' cane juice soda, etc. They had blueberry soda once and I wanted to try that, but then I didn't get to, so sad. Also, there are pictures of vaginas everywhere. This is what you get for going to a coffee shop at a liberal womens' college that is student-run. But seriously, the Motley is awesome. read more

Here are some highlights/info I've learned as both a previous Motley barista and a current customer: * My favorite thing about the Motley is that they above and beyond to accommodate different food allergies / needs. Besides whole, skim (fat-free), and soy milk, they also have almond milk! There's usually also a bevy of delicious, local and student-baked vegan and vegetarian goods, some of which are gluten-free. There are tasty pre-packaged foods as well (yogurt, soups, etc). * Bring your own mug if you're planning on to-go. The Mot charges for their biodegradable cups to discourage the use of disposables - and rightfully so! They have their own mugs for in-house use. * Don't bring big bills if possible. There is usually barely enough change in the register to split a few $20s, so you may have some trouble trying to pay with a $100. (Students - it's quickest to stick with Flex and Claremont Cash) * A sizable chunk of the barista staff are new-students that may or may not have worked at a coffeeshop before, so the first few weeks can be a little rocky but the quality goes up throughout the year. * Be adventurous and try their unique specialty drinks. They sound strange but are usually well-tested and very good. ...so why 5 stars? For an entirely student-run shop that devotes itself to ethical business practices, you can't beat this place! The Motley is so much better than most of the for-profit coffeeshops I've been too. It's worth your business - go check it out. read more

Yay for the Motley! I'm not a big coffee drinker so I must admit that I mostly come here for snacks (and maybe some tea). I'm not a vegan but DAMN those homemade, vegan chocolate chip cookies that they sell are absolutely divine, especially if you can get them right after they're delivered so that they're fresh-baked and still a little warm and gooey. Mmmmm.... The breakfast burritos also hit the spot. I guess the only complaint I have about the Motley is that there's always a looong line in between class periods. Oftentimes I try to stop by for a jolt of caffine or a tasty treat on my way to class and I end up standing in line for several minutes before I decide that I'd better get going or else I'll be late. This is not the fault of any of the ladies behind the counter - they're working their asses off - but is really just a product of the Motley being so popular. Maybe it's time to expand? Oh yeah, and I wish people would do a better job of tidying up when they leave the Motley. There are always magazines and newspapers strewn all over the place, making it kinda hard to find the thing you're looking for. So clean up after yourselves, people! read more

I went here today for the first time and didn't realize it would be so open and large with lots of tables and chairs. This is such a welcoming place to study that I know I will be coming back. They don't take credit or debit cards, so be sure to have some cash on hand although you won't need much because they are so reasonable. I love that several doors open to the beautiful and peaceful fountain and fresh air. They play some great music as background, and everything is magic here. Everything. This business has a great mission and stands behind its principles. For example, sustainability isn't just a buzz word for them. this place rocks! I'm a student at a nearby graduate school whose campus is so lackluster and the coffee shop there closes at 4. They are cash only, and charge $1 extra for drinks in paper/to-go cups (no way to force people to be eco-friendly than to hit their wallets). Drinks are super inexpensive ad they have all sorts of baked goods that seem to run out in the afternoon/evening. They also have fancy chips, Annie's mac and cheese, kombucha, etc. Lots of tables to study at, plus power outlets and free wifi. It does get noisy here though and can get crowded. So, if you read my Scripps review, you will see that I have a slightly ambivalent relationship to Scripps. However, my Motley love has always been solid. I decided to meet new Scrippsies after I returned from my junior year abroad, so I applied and was thrilled to work here until I graduated. I loved hanging out with my shiftmates. I loved that we, the students, ran the whole schbang from top to bottom including mopping the floors at 1 AM after closing! Class sucks at 8 AM, the next morning. The coffee was always awesome here, but the atmosphere is even better. While I was here, I witnessed 3--count 'em-- 3 locations for the Motley. In the lower courtyard on 12th (which was rad, by the way), in Frankel while the new Commons was being built and it's final resting place in the Commons. This is what a coffeeshop should be! So much love for the motley! This is Scripps' feminist student-run coffee shop. Atmosphere is super cozy and comfortable. The music selection is sometimes off putting, so bring your own headphones! Drinks are super affordable, especially if you bring your own cup (to-go cups are a $1 fee.) They have live music and other activities at least once a week. Also -- if you come fifteen minutes before closing they give out free coffee, tea, and baked goods! They usually have vegan cookies and vegan bagels & cream cheese. They also have a few different kinds of non-dairy milk. Stop by if you're on the 5Cs! Definitely worth a trip. read more

I went to Pomona, but even when I lived a block from the Village, I spent all of my time (and my flex dollars) at the Motley. They have so many wonderful drinks and foods and employees, and their music selection (both live and recorded) is superb. They were also mad helpful when the campus organization I ran held an event there. Plus, there are loads of comfy couches and even BLANKETS. It's a great spot generally, with big windows and brick walls and student art everywhere. It's the spot on campus that most closely resembles what I imagined college would be like. There aren't many things I miss about Claremont, but the Motley is one of them. read more

Just discovered this gem yesterday and found out tomorrow is the start of their summer break (since they are all students and school is off for the summer) will definitely be back when they start new semester. I had their matcha cha cha with lavander...it is delicious and I love how their are environmentally friendly..you bring your own cup or drink your drink there and it is cheap and great quality drinks.
