Semi-upscale Chinese food in a lovely setting. They specialize in seafood, which is a bit of a bummer for me because I can't eat most of it (no shellfish anyway), but my boyfriend declared that the pepper scallops are amazing. I ordered a ginger lamb dish with veggies that I thought was quite tasty, and I got a TON of food. The tea was really yummy, service was good. I grew up eating sally lings as a little kid. So when i found out that Chef Sau opened Ck Shanghai right down the street i had to check it out. They serve authentic hong kong and shanghai style cuisine! This is what Wellesley has been missing! I will be back. They also have alot of the american stuff which seemed to be ordered a lot. I noticed a few of the tables ordering the crispy tangerine shrimp dish. The shrimps looked pretty huge. My Food: Lobster in Scallion and Ginger was amazing! (I normally eat this during chinese new year) The Crispy Duck was a little expensive! $34 but i loved it! skin was really crispy and the meat was nice and juicy. Maybe I'm just too skeezed out by the so called "authentic" places that serve questionable meat with bits of bone, lumps of fat, and so much MSG that it barely stays on the fork, but said "authentic" restaurants that people always rave about leave me feeling cold and intestionally violated after eating there. That being said, if you are a fan of that sort of fare, you probably won't like CK Shanghai. They serve carefully trimmed bits of meat in well seasoned (though undeniably Americanized) sauces. It's quite pricey if you go for dinner, but that's just one of the things I've come to expect from living in Wellesley, and considering that it's probably not the healthiest of styles of dining, the price keeps me from visiting there more frequently than my waist line would like. One of the best Chinese food places in Metro-west. I recently went with my family (after a failed attempt to eat at Paparazzi's across the street) and was so pleasantly surprised that I've been back numerous times. The lunch specials are incredibly affordable with mammoth sized portions. Dinner was great too; an incredibly varied menu with fresh, well-seasoned dishes made for a great evening. We had great food here once so I decided to grab takeout tonight. It was pretty bad. The General Gau's chicken was stale and mooshy and the sauce was very watery. The crab rangoons were also stale and didn't have the usual crunch. It honestly tasted like they put the order in the microwave. You know how most Chinese food restaurants either smell like fish sauce or floor cleaner? CK's is SO not one of those Chinese places. It is one of the only places I can take the boys I babysit who have food allergies. CK puts a lot of care into his kitchen and his dishes. If you have allergies or are freaked out by slime in the ice machine you should definitely put it on your list as a quality place where you can trust the chef to make you a legit meal. CK Shanghai is a clean, well-lit place. Unfortunately, it is not a good environment to conduct business in from my experience. I had booked a meeting here before for a party of about 8 and got a set of seats in the middle of the restaraunt, arranged in a row. The cacophony in the restaurant made it very difficult to talk, the effect of the room making it only possible to lean over and talk to the person beside or in front of me. The food was better at the chef's old restaurant in Chinatown, since it was less catered in taste. The dishes all seem oversauced, the rest of the dish merely a medium for them. It has been a while (about 2 years), so I can not go into excrutiating detail, but I remember the ma po tofu in a sauce with a sharp raw pepper kick, but not really having flavor beyond being 'salty' and not being able to taste the fish in the whole hunan fish over the sauce, the sauce being more raw 'savory' than filled with spices. For such a dish, I'd much rather go to Bernard's about 10 minutes away, where the balance is much better achieved and refined. In terms of the service, I remember having to constantly ask the waiters for water and needing to flag them down several times before getting a response. I've lived in Wellesely for 12 years and have been eating at Ck. for ten years. The food IS good. It's NOT Chinese - it's American Chinese but that's okay. You will never get sick from this food. It's an absolute no brainer if you want safe great tasting nothing too exciting food. So that's pretty much why my family and I have been going there for so long. BUT BEWARE- THE SERVICE IS APPALLING! For YEARS my friends and family have been putting up with the two most awful waitresses. But yesterday was the end of my eating IN. The waitress was rude and well just incredibly rude. So we have decided to get take out from now on. And when I mentioned this to local friends they ALL laughed and said that they do the same. The waitresses make you feel like THEY are doing you a HUGE favor by serving you. I've never been so uncomfortable with another human being as I have been with this woman. Went here a few times while in college and had great experiences! I always got the Crispy Sesame Chicken with white rice and always enjoyed it! I hate when Chinese restaurants use dark meat, so I was extremely happy when I found all white meat in this dish. It was cooked well and perfectly satisfying. The prices are a little high, but you do get good portions and great food. There is a little bit of a language barrier with the staff, but it wasn't ever a huge problem and they always seemed pleasant. read more

Unfortunately a really bad experience here. I was visiting an old friend with my family. We were with elderly people and the waitress treated us in the worst way possible. She was very disrespectful since the beginning, threw the plates of food at us and had an unfriendly attitude the whole time. The food was not even worth it. At the end, the waitress even had the nerve to demand for a higher percentage tip even though she did a crappy job and was within the acceptable range of tips. Have heard great things but never have been..went there Sat night...and all around EVERYONE loved what they got..Fresh shrimp..big shrimp..perfectly cooked. Sweet udon noodles...everything was lightly seasoned to perfection...nothing greasy, everything had flavor. Such a wonderful change from typical Chinese fare in the burbs. I've been to CK Shanghai several times over the past year (that's how I love it). I think it's an outstanding restaurant in Wellesley/Newton area (and probably better than many places even in Boston's Chinatown). There are a few dishes I always order whenever I go: Peking Ribs, Smoked Duck, and Yushiang Eggplant - all truly tasty. The great part about this place is that every dish is so different from others. This may seem like a normal requirement but considering many Chinese restaurants cook different dishes using the same sauce, I regard their food to be uniquely good. I even tried the whole sweet & sour fish with pine nuts - a pricy one - but they did it in the very authentic way and it was totally worth it! It seems that the chefs are truly making their efforts to make everything great and memorable. The place is neat and bright. It's not huge but well organized. Service is always quick and friendly. Often times the manager comes over to greet us. There was one time (the only time) I ordered something I never tried before but didn't turn out as good. The manager instantly took it back and asked us if I would like to replace with something else - that's the attitude that many other Asian restaurants need to learn big time! What a disappointed trip to Ck Shanghai. We went there for lunch, dated decor, super uncomfortable chairs, the quantity of food was good but no seasoning. Both of our orders came with watery sauce. One of the beef dishes was too chewy we couldn't eat at all. The staffs were reckless, they bumped into my backpack every time they passed but no one apologized even the restaurant was not busy and there were plenty room in the aisle. Although the restaurant name is CK Shanghai, the menu has nothing to do with Shanghai cuisine. If you look for authentic Chinese food, don't bother to go there. read more

I have been going to CK Shanghai for years and when they first came to town I thought the food was first rate. Lately, however, I find that quality is slipping. This week, I got into Logan at 8 and wanted to settle down in front of the presidential debate at 9. Called CK from the Pike - ready in 10 - picked up when I got into town - enjoying hot and sour soup at 9 in front of the tv - all good. On the positive side, the people who work there are so nice and the hot and sour soup is consistently delicious. However, the Sesame Chicken was overly sweet, heavily breaded and way overcooked. The tangerine beef - same deal. My biggest problem is that the menu never specifies whether the dishes are breaded or not, with veggies or not. Both dishes were accompanied by overcooked broccoli. I think our takeout meal was probably one of the last they prepared for that day. But for $35, it should have been freshly cooked and as good as if we walked in at 5. Next time, I'll give Jin's a try (new restaurant next door). read more

Went there today for a late Sunday lunch (~2pm). Ordered walnut shrimp, string beans w/ minced pork, and one of the duck dishes (forget which one, but not the imperial duck or peking duck). Food was okay taste-wise, but none of the dishes were hot. Some of the string beans were actually cold. Given that the dishes came out relatively quickly, my suspicion is that they microwaved it. On top of that, the service was just meh and the meal totaled just under $50, which is really expensive for the quality we got. Can't speak to the dim sum or dinner experience, but from my meal today, I would NOT recommend CK Shanghai. read more

Surprised to see any stellar reviews at all. Yes, it's a nice, neat place in a rich town, and the food is a little fresher, a little lighter, a little more expensive, but it's still suburban, Americanized generic Chinese food. There are two basic subtypes in this category: good ones and lame ones. This is a good one, but it's not very interesting. At least not for me (I've been traveling to China for over 15 years). We noticed the same beef in both dishes that had beef. Just a seemingly typical mix and match of meats and sauces and vegetables. Don't see that with authentic Chinese food. Nice food and a different experience than normal chinese restaurant. Small, but nice service and fresh food. More expensive than average with small portions, but definitely worth the experience. Try it at least once. Don't go during standard times, though. I went there for takeout last night around 4:30pm. A big plus, they have some parking in the back, was able to find a spot. Went in, was nicely greeted by the host, got the menu and ordered two entree's. Within 5 minutes I had my food in hand and was out the door. The General Gau's was pretty good, I did have a couple pieces that weren't completely white meat, but overall pretty good. The chicken with cashew nut had good flavor, but I didn't like how they chopped up the chicken, I would have liked larger pieces. The sweet and sour soup was good and slightly spicy.
