We used to love ordering from GPP, but unfortunately, the quality has really gone downhill while the prices have continued to go up. Lately, the food often tastes like it has simply been reheated. The rice arrives cold and dry, and the egg rolls--now $8.50 for two--are soggy and taste like they've been sitting around. The chicken satay skewers also seem to be getting smaller and smaller. The chicken lo mein has very little chicken in it; you practically have to dig through the noodles to find a piece. It's disappointing because GPP used to be one of our favorites, but at these prices, the quality and portions simply aren't what they used to be. I hope the owners take notice and correct some of these issues. We will not be ordering from here anymore. read more

I remember someone in the area once saying that this was one of the best Chinese spots in Watertown. I didn't think much of that comment since that same person also didn't recommend any Chinese spots that were firmly at the top of my list. Having driven by so many times in the past, I always thought it unusual that the location was always empty. Perhaps, they had a larger following with people ordering to-go (or delivery if they did do so). So finally, having the time and opportunity to stop by for a meal, I decided to stop by and see what it was all about. Trust me, I wanted to really like this place and was hoping to add another go-to spot to the growing list of culinary delights. The lady that served us was exceptionally friendly. Everything seemed clean and organized. The menu was extensive (as expected of any Chinese spots) and had both Chinese and Thai dishes. Since I was particularly hungry in that moment, I ordered enough to binge a little and have some leftovers for later. Both soups tasted great...despite being only slightly warm. That threw me off quite a bit. Since when do Chinese soups come out anything but scalding hot? But what immediately made me frown was the following three mains that came out. The beef and broccoli, while very American Chinese, still incorporates very traditional Cantonese culinary techniques, which is why I usually order it whenever I visit a "non-traditional" Chinese spot (to gauge their culinary finesse). The broccoli was slightly overcooked and soft. The meat tender but the sauce slightly clumped (over-slurried). It doesn't stop there. The fried rice had no wok hei and was quite bland. The pan fried noodles was just as bland and the snow peas that came with it was still quite raw (the raw essence is still very present, which is another culinary faux pax. That said, I can see why some people would like this place. It is non-pretentious with a lot of potential. Perhaps, they were just not having the best day in the kitchen and the person recommending it may have had significantly better experiences here with the food. Came in a tiny white box maybe five wings in total must have been chicks so small and greasy and disgusting only could eat one . Threw the others out. Pad Thai $14.50 the nerve , three yes 3 small shrimp in a small plastic container no vegetables no flavor terrible ate it in three bites worst pad Thai I've ever had. Finally To Yum soup $6.25 came in a container so small I was insulted. poured it into a soup ball for reheating filled bowl halfway not even an acceptable kiddie serving. Consider this, in May, they increased the price of their lunch special from $10 to $11. Just now they increased the price - again, in about three months - to $13. That's a total of 30%! Don't be surprised that you don't see me anymore, or if your business falls off. Too bad - the service and food were not bad, but this is unjustifiable. I hope the food I paid $25 for isn't what they'd serve their families. Salt-peppery squid wasn't salty, wasn't peppery, batter was thick & chewy like over beaten tempura (blech), calamari was chewy. House special chow foon(sp?) had bland sauce, no veggies, overcooked meat. I was so furious. The food was low quality about 6 years ago & I didn't go back but reviews were solid so... Never. Again. I feel like you need to know what to order here. I've had this place twice. The first time I tried the crab rangoon and yu-hsiang eggplant. Both were great, eggplant was a bit oily though. Second time around I had the general gao tofu (my regular order at other Chinese restaurants) and it tasted... weird... watered down maybe? I also had the hot and sour soup, another favorite of mine, and what I got was NOT hot and sour soup as I know it. The broth was yellow (looked like egg drop soup) and it had tofu and bean sprouts in it. No mushroom, no bamboo shoots, and definitely no hallmark white pepper flavor. Huge disappointment. My partner and I got takeout for dinner and overall it was good, but we weren't impressed by everything we ordered. Veggie lo mein: good variety of veggies & nice flavor to the sauce. Not oily like many other places and it didn't make me feel heavy after. Yummy! Veggie tempura: lightly battered but not as crispy as I'd like. They got a little soggy during their travels. Crab Rangoon: good flavor and proportion of crab to cream cheese. The dough was nice and crunchy too. Veggie pan fried dumplings: the filling was yummy but not super flavorful. It was a tasty dish and well cooked and prepared. It was hot till the end and everything was good. The crabs weren't the best I've had and certainly not the worst. The general gau was very good. The Green Peapod is my go to Chinese restaurant for a few reasons (and EXTREMELY SAFE COVID PRECAUTIONS) First off, the food is delicious and they're extremely consistent. They've got a range of menu items to satisfy basically any craving I have (the Crab Rangoons will always be my favorite though) Second, they have an easy socially distant pick up option or contact free delivery if I don't want to leave my house. You also get a great bang for your buck - good quality food with pretty good sized portions (enough to leave you satisfied and probably some leftover). They have some combo options that make your dollar go further. Service is quick and friendly too - they're on my list of local favorites to support especially during the pandemic! read more

I ordered a combo meal as a pickup order from this place and asked to substitute veggie fried rice instead of the pork fried rice. The upcharge was $3 which seemed high but I hoped the quality would be worth it. Unfortunately when I went to eat the meal i found there was pork in the rice after all. I called and explained what happened and was told I could have $3 off my next order. Considering I don't eat pork which I mentioned was why I wanted the sub in the first place - I wasn't able to eat the rice at all which wasn't addressed. So I go back a few weeks later, order veggie fresh rolls and ask for the $3 discount. The gentleman at the counter asks me 3 times if I wanted to order veggie fried rice - I kept saying no thanks. Turns out he wanted me to order more food to offset the $0.75 transaction fee. I apologized and said I wasn't interested in anything more- he rang the transaction and asked how much I wanted to leave for a tip. I clicked no tip. Then he went into the kitchen. When the order came I thanked him and left. I decided to snack on one of the rolls while I sat in traffic going home. I can't say I was honestly surprised when I opened the container - the fresh rolls (which are prepared to order bc the rice paper doesn't remain soft for a long time) had nothing in them, just noodles no veggies or tofu for me. I ordered this recently. Got the Beef Pad See Ew and crab Rangoon. The entree was good. Not great but better than average. Meat was a tad too tough. Flavor was good though. Crab Rangoon was a bit bland. Although I like the triangle puff version they have as they are easier to dip and eat. Overall I'd say 3.5 out of 5. I'll try them again. read more

This is a good place for Chinese food. The restaurant is immaculate and they have excellent lunch and dinner specials. I especially like their chicken wings and chicken fingers. They have great spring rolls as well. I had a friend who lived in the area at one point and we would often order delivery from there as well when I was in the area visiting. The delivery orders always went well, arrived quickly and the food was always hot and fresh. The prices are not bad at all there and I would highly recommend this place. read more

NO SAUCE ON THE PAD THAI - PLAIN RICE NOODLES ONLY - AVOID AVOID AVOID Argh! Why didn't I check Yelp before I ordered? These people charged me $13 for a take-out container full of: * PLAIN, STUCK-TOGETHER rice noodles * some tofu chunks * small amount of scrambled egg * a few scallions * a tablespoon of crushed peanuts * a lime wedge * a tiny container with about an ounce of watery peanut sauce NO SAUCE, NO FLAVOR, and no apology! I called the restaurant to complain, asking: "... where is the tamarind paste, the fish sauce, the chili pepper, the stuff that makes it taste like pad thai? Why is there NOTHING on these noodles?" The woman on the other end tried to argue that the noodles were empty because "the chef makes it that way" and "every restaurant makes it differently". Apparently, in the nearly FOUR YEARS since reviewer Melizza P.'s nearly-identical 2007 review of a bald, naked, sauceless pad thai, the asshats at this location have not seen fit to update their "recipe" with anything that pad thai is supposed to contain. I've only tried a few dishes from GPP (pad thai, green curry with tofu, and lemon grass tofu) so maybe I haven't given it a chance - I'll accept the loss if I'm truly missing out. Among the dishes I've tried, my greatest qualms have been the excessive oil and lack of flavor. I've attempted to be reasonable with a 3-star rating since no one should have high expectations when it comes to an Americanized Chinese, take-out restaurant. Maybe eat-in service is good, but take-out is always awful. Every time I go in, I'm met with glares and someone yelling at me and practically throwing my change at me when I pay. I always get the feeling that they hate me for ordering their food, which is a bit unsettling. -The lack of customers. Update, stopped by for lunch. Ordered there lunch special of the Fish Fury. Very spicy. It came with a choice of appetizers and fried or steamed rice. I got the egg roll and white rice. The special I got was 7.50. I also ordered a separate order of chicken wings. Very hot and tasty. So far when I've eaten here the food has been perfectly fine. I really don't understand why more people don't show up. That being said I'm going to bump up my star by one because I currently don't see anything actually WRONG with the place other then the fact that there really isn't any customers (when I went there was only one other table sitting). read more

I've been planning to write this review for a few weeks, so this is from about a month ago. They are a short walk from my house, and I was hankering for some thai food. I ordered red curry chicken, and my housemate ordered pad thai. One thing we both agreed on? No flavor. The place was clean enough for a storefront, but didn't feel comfortable inside. The food wasn't terrible, but it had no flavor at all. I keep planning to try something from the chinese side of the menu, but I honestly haven't been able to talk myself into going back. Scallion pancakes are good, red curry tofu is good; can't really vouch for much else personally, but I've never heard anyone complain about anything when we ordered. I love this place! The Garlic Shrimps are delicious. The Crab Rangoons are divine. I am obsessed with their Pad Thai. The shrimps are a great size in the Garlic Shrimp and so tasty. I love the crab rangoons here compared to other Chinese Restaurants because they aren't overly greasy and soaked in pounds of oil. The pad thais are also great as they don't drench the noodles with the peanut sauce and give you the option to add more if you want. The prices are great for the quality and quantity you get. The person on the other line had to ask me for directions to my place, even though I'm less than 10 minutes away and apparently my roommate ordered from this place before. I've tried this place a couple times over the years(usually I forget whether I liked it, and figure "oh, I'll try it again"), and have had a variety of things, but it's usually via delivery for dinner. Gross. The pad thai, they should be ashamed of, being the front of the menu says "Chinese and Thai", if they're going to proudly display a specialty in both, it better be good. The best place for Pad Thai in Watertown(IMHO) is Tantawan on Arsenal Street, which has a generous helping of everything that should be in the pad thai(bean sprouts, peanuts, not overly saucy). This place was a lump of plain, not dressed in any way rice noodles, a few pieces of icky lookin' chicken, and about a teaspoon of sprinkled peanuts with a couple of shoots. I was SO disappointed. My boyfriend who ordered something with tereyaki chicken skewers...well, they were YELLOW chicken skewers, and they were terrible. I'm more picky then he is, and this is one of the first times he's ever said "taste this, its AWFUL!" it was mushy with a very creepy old chicken aftertaste. I have finally learned my lesson and threw away the menu. I have yet to find a chinese take out that pleases me across the board(fantastic lo mein! but so-so rangoon, and vice versa), but this is by far the worst of the bunch. Don't do it! read more

After we moved to Cambridge this summer, we needed to find a new, more convenient place for Chinese takeout. I drive by this place every day going to and from school, so we decided to try it for takeout one night recently. We walked in and ordered with the woman at the desk. She repeated the order back to us and told us it would be done in 10 minutes, which it was. We each got a combo dinner - entree plus two appetizers for each of us. I ordered the chicken with steamed chinese vegetables, steamed white rice, chicken teriyaki, and an egg roll. My partner in dining crime ordered sesame chicken, steamed white rice, chicken teriyaki, and an egg roll. Considering the woman at the desk repeated the order correctly back to us, and I saw her write it down, I'm not sure how we got the wrong thing, but we did. There were no other customers in the restaurant, so they weren't too busy or anything either. I *think* that the chicken and veggies might have been what I ordered, but whatever it was, it was sort of gross. Limp celery and about fifty onions with some chicken in a gross, clearish salty sauce that looked like water thickened with corn starch. We both ended up with pork fried rice (?!), I ended up with some sort of beef on a stick and fried chicken fingers that were battered with what looked to be sponge. He also got the spongy chicken fingers and a pile of tough boneless spareribs. Because those are a lot like eggrolls, right? Mmmhmm. The sesame chicken was the one item we definitely ordered - it was dry, stringy, overcooked dark meat with too much batter. Ew. It would have been a decent amount of food for the money (not the cheapest for chinese, but not unreasonable either), but really, we didn't get what we ordered, and most of what we did get was gross. Judging by the quality of the food we did get, we won't be going back. Sorry Green Peapod, I wanted you to be our new chinese takeout place, but we're going to have to keep looking. read more

DONT ORDER FROM HERE! We've ordered delivery for the office a few times before and it's been OK, but today we had a pretty sorry experience. For the lunch specials, if you don't explicitly tell them what appetizer and soup you want, they simply don't include anything. At the very least they should ask, or provide a default. Instead they just gyp you on it. Secondly, one person ordered Chicken with Mushrooms and another ordered Chicken with Hot Basil leaves. The Chicken with Mushrooms was ALL vegetables (no mushrooms in sight) and the Chicken with Basil had not a single basil leaf. I have always really liked Green Peapod. I get delivery from here a lot, and although i wouldn't say that there thai food is necessarily very good, but they definitely have awesome chinese food. Best appetizers and usually not that greasy. They have pretty good tom yum soup too. I've eaten in there maybe once, and as far as i can remember the service was fine and the food was yummy. OK- so when we first moved to watertown, we were ordering from here about every other night. Delivery was really fast, and everything was hot and delicious. Something must have happened, because then we started experiencing what everyone else says. Really long waits, they got our order wrong almost every time, and one time we just threw the food away because it was that bad. Well, we tried again tonight, and it was back to good!
