First time back here in almost 6 years according to my previous review. This return back was very good. Ordered the general gau dish with pork fried rice w beef teriyaki and crab Rangoon. It was a tasty dish and well cooked and prepared. It was hot till the end and everything was good. The crabs weren't the best I've had and certainly not the worst. The general gau was very good. Good chunk of tender chicken w a great sauce and good kick to it. The rice was good as well. The beef teriyaki was perfectly cooked and not tough to eat. The wait for takeout wasn't long and they have a big menu but I'm stubborn and keep it simple most times.

Delivery portions keep getting smaller.

I love this place but disappointed that their delivery portions keep getting smaller.

The best. Fresh, great portions. Spareribs are the best I've had since Kowloon. Friendly.

I frequently dine there for lunch. The food is extremely good at a reasonable price and a varied menu.

Crab Rangoons are a must here! Some of my favorite rangoons in greater Boston - always glad to support smaller businesses in the area.

I ordered the Papaya salad, Chicken satay. Curry Shortribs and Phad See Yue with beef and the mango sticky rice with coconut ice cream. All I can say was everything was exceptionally tasty and I would definitely come back here again. This place is reasonable and not overpriced. Definitely make a reservation.

It was very busy but we were able to get a table for two within 5 min. The service was super slow. Took ~20 min for our server to take our order & another 40 min for our food to come. We noticed our server was the only server for all the tables, haha crazy! Here's what we ended up ordering: -roti (w/ potato curry sauce) -chicken wings (w/ spicy garlic sauce) -pad see ew -pla pad kun chai (fried cod fish fillet w/ lemongrass + Chinese celery) -Thai iced tea We tried the chicken wings, the roti, and Thai iced teas at the restaurant & ended up requesting for the rest of our food to go since we were on a time crunch. Thoughts: The pad see ew was delicious! We reheated it later that night & it was flavorful. I would definitely get this again. The chicken wings had good flavor but we found the chicken itself to be very dry inside. Made it difficult to enjoy. I loved the potato curry sauce that came with the roti. Simple but tasty dish. The pla pad kun chai was our least favorite dish we ordered. It didn't taste good at all after reheating. We're curious if we would've enjoyed this more if we ate it at the restaurant when it was fresh? The fish had a very fishy smell & didn't taste like it had been treated with lemon, vinegar, or both. We usually enjoy cod fish & lemongrass but this was a complete miss for us. Lastly, the Thai iced tea was okay. It was a bit too watery for us & we wished it could've been creamier. Overall, I would come back again to give Cha Yen another try. I did like the dishes we tried at the restaurant & perhaps the fish for example would've tasted better if had at the restaurant.

Fish cakes were small and perfectly uniform - almost like they were frozen rather than prepared on site. Green curry had some spice but was mostly one note, there just wasn't much depth of flavor. Vegetables were all cut in huge hunks - both dishes had giant pieces of red bell peppers and onions. Fried rice was pretty bland and barely had any Chinese broccoli in it. Ambiance was bare bones - you order at the counter and they bring you your food and plastic side plates. Half the tables were stacked with boxes and bags of takeout orders. To top it off there's no bathroom, we were told to use the bathroom at another local business. If I'm gonna spend $60 somewhere, I expect to be able to wash my hands before eating and use the restroom. Perhaps there are some specialty dishes that we didn't try but this was my 2nd time ordering from here (I got take out once before) and both times the food was pretty bland. A truly underwhelming experience - especially when there are so many better restaurants in the area.

Laughing Monk Cafe is a small Thai restaurant on Brighton Avenue in Allston that specializes in…read moreIsaan cuisine from northeastern Thailand, and that focus is what separates it from the dozens of generic Thai spots in the Boston area. We walked into a modest, no frills dining room that feels like a neighborhood staple, with a steady stream of regulars and students who have clearly figured out that this kitchen does something different. The pad see ew is a reliable order and the kitchen handles it well, with the wide rice noodles picking up enough wok char to give the dish the slightly smoky edge that makes or breaks it. The basil fried rice is another strong everyday order, fragrant and well seasoned with a heat level that comes through clearly without overwhelming the rest of the flavors, and the hint of spice carries through each bite in a way that makes it hard to stop eating. Both dishes are the kind of thing you come back for not because they are revelatory but because the execution is consistently solid and the portion sizes are generous enough to make the value feel right. The roti canai is worth ordering as a starter, flaky and well made with a curry dipping sauce that sets a good tone for the meal before the mains arrive. Beyond those three, the larb moo grob is the dish that the restaurant is most known for and the one most worth trying on a first visit, with the crispy pork and the herb forward dressing hitting the kind of authentic Isaan flavor that is nearly impossible to find elsewhere in the city. The Tom Yum and khao man gai are both excellent and worth working into the order if you are eating with a group. Service is straightforward and efficient, with the staff moving quickly to get orders out even when the dining room fills up. The pace is casual and the focus stays on the food rather than the atmosphere, which fits the neighborhood spot energy well. For an authentic taste of northeastern Thai cooking in Allston, Laughing Monk Cafe delivers on the dishes that matter most.

For $17.95, getting 3 rolls of sushi isn't a bad deal, so I'm giving this a 4/5. The combo comes with a spicy tuna roll, a california roll, and a salmon avocado roll. Spicy Tuna Roll: This was pretty disappointing. I really love spicy tuna rolls that have the minced tuna, spicy mayo, and tempura flakes all mixed together, but this was not that. This roll was a tuna cucumber roll with spicy mayo drizzled on top. With that, the spicy mayo was really overpowering and I couldn't taste the tuna at all. I'd prefer the normal tempura and mayo taste or just a tuna and cucumber, but doing it this way wasn't my favorite. California Roll: This was not bad - the imitation crab was big and plump and there was fish roe inside of the roll instead of on the outside which made it have a better texture in my opinion. The avocado was fresh and these bites were pretty enjoyable. Salmon Avocado Roll - This was the best roll of the 3 - the salmon tasted good and the avocado was fresh again.
