Because the Outer Mission is a working class neighborhood, it's not luxurious, but you can enjoy breakfast here. Many outsiders will find the environment not fitting to there liking. This coffee place is in the heart of a Asian-American community, to make the community feel safe and welcomed, the baristas are usually Cantonese speakers that have friendly relationships with their community. I admire the inclusivity Asians feel when in this shop. With that, many uncles are comfortable smoking cigarettes outside the shop. It does not bother me as I am a former smoker myself, but I would not enjoy if you are adverse of the smell of cigarette smoke. read more

This is my personal coffee shop. No big sign. Always open. Always strong coffee. My dad and I have been going here since I was a child. When I used to go to work with him, we always stopped for a cup of coffee in the morning. When you enter, the men gather here with many smiles and laughter, drowning out the sound of smooth jazz in the background. The kind servers are always attentive, in a rush to serve you with a big ole smile. The smell of coffee buzzes through the streets of Geneva. Look, if you're looking for another hip cafe to take photos of, this aint the place for you. You want strong coffee to get your morning GOING? Go here. Their coffee is decent, though not fancy. I ordered an oat milk mocha, and it was okay, though it could have had more chocolate flavor. I wouldn't recommend the bagels. They didn't ask if I wanted it toasted or not, but just went ahead and toasted. The bagels looked not great in the case. I would've skipped it if I'd seen the case before ordering. Another spot I frequent very infrequently. This part of SF has few coffee options and today I was near and needed some starter fluid. The coffee is not A plus but the Claddagh is spotless with good service. I think my coffee had some sugar in it (not my preference) but then talking through masks through glass on Christmas eve can make for miscommunications. This is a long overdue review for this neighborhood coffee shop. This cafe is a popular morning spot for middle-aged Chinese men who smoke outside in the morning before they go to work. The girls are really quick at taking orders and clearing the lines, as well as efficient at making drinks. Quality of my caramel macchiato tends to stay consistent - just okay. The owner is very nice but tends to be a little slower at making the drinks. Sometimes I also get the Breakfast Bagel ($3.95) with a plain bagel, swiss, ham, and egg. I realized that every time I asked for swiss, they always gave me a creamy white cheese which I later found out to be white cheddar. Still pretty good but not what I asked for, ya know. This is the place to go for a quick caffeine fix but may not be an ideal place to hang around. read more

I was glad to find this little coffee shop in the neighborhood I was staying in. I don't know the area and glad I didn't have to travel too far to grab some lunch and coffee. When I first glanced at the menu I was hoping to see more food items but it was just a few sandwiches and mostly drinks. I ended up ordering a turkey sandwich with a health nut cookie, a soy latte and cold bottled tea. I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth and mild their coffee tasted and how fresh and tasty the sandwich was but the winner of this meal goes to the health nut cookie. That was the healthiest treat I saw on the menu so I went for it and I'm glad I did. I'm definitely going back for a second cookie. The total was $14 about the same as Starbucks, which seems fair. The only downside I see with CC is that the store itself definitely needs a major makeover starting with a deep cleaning because it looks very rundown and dirty. I know the buildings here are old but for a restaurant to have black grimy floors is beyond disgusting and a turnoff. read more

I first dropped by Claddaugh because I needed some sort of zing to get through the day. I was roused by the clientele before I ordered anything -- walking in you'll likely hear Cantonese, Spanish or a blend of both. Somehow, the people talking are emphatic without being cacophonous. It's lively, and my favorite background noise I've heard at a cafe so far. After a few more visits it seems like Claddaugh is a place to relax for working class Chinese and Latino people. Regulars sit in their usual places (near the window for Chinese workers or by the couches for Latino workers) with their coffees in to-go cups. I can't not appreciate that consistency. What I've tried so far: - The Chai latte tastes like chai, which is an automatic plus. I've had too many chai beverages with more sugar or milk than spices. Not the best, but it'll fulfill cravings if you're in the area. - Do have a Granola Oat Jack cookie if you're a fan of cranberries or chewy cookies! Tart, satisfying and a mouth workout for $2.75. - The Americano goes down easy, but it tastes flat and overroasted. read more

They do accept credit cards but at a $5 minimum. I had some sort of latte (I went during winter break) and I had no complaints, I didn't have to add anything more to it. Instead, it's the increase in traffic you bring to this stretch of Geneva Avenue. It has gotten to the point of being unbearable, and I end up driving the other direction [which is actually FARTHER] just to avoid this 2-block stretch you affect. Minus a star. Since my last review in 2006, I've probably stopped in to study fewer than a handful of times. I just came here for the wifi and some food when I first moved into the neighborhood and the internet wasn't set up at my house yet. The wifi was unlimited and worked well. When I took breaks from working on my laptop, I'd stream videos or play StarCraft and they all worked fine on the wifi here. There was an outlet near the back couch and two more in front table area. This coffee shop isn't as nice or clean as others, but it'll do if you're in the neighborhood looking for a place to study or get on your laptop. There weren't a lot of students to compete with for the outlets, but there were a lot of older Chinese men who'd come in the mornings and afternoons to hang out. They tend to be quite loud so it can be a distraction if you need a quiet environment to focus. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I bought food in order to sit down and use the wifi. The turkey sandwich for $6 was a totally normal but filling deli sandwich. Their biscotti and cookies were big and tasty. Though they didn't seem super fresh, they tasted better that simple packaged cookies or Costco cookies. Credit card is accepted here, but there's a $5 minimum. Though it's not the nicest coffee shop out there, Claddaugh Coffee fits the neighborhood well. read more

I used to come here on occasion a few years back when Claddagh was either owned or frequented by an Irish-American thug family -- Crocker Park, bro! -- but somewhere along the line ownership changed hands. When the Irish mob ran this place, the coffee was decent and the Mongolian girl behind the counter cute. The new Chinese owners have cut corners everywhere. The horrible flourescent lighting, however, was the final straw. I know our Mandarin-speaking neighbors are thrifty but c'mon... The Excelsior has been struggling for decades now. The staff are efficient and nice enough. There's plenty of space. Just, not for me I guess, I don't know - I've never managed to engage anyone at this place in more than a single sentence conversation. Friendly enough, but they'd rather not talk to me, that much is clear. Oh shit, there is a coffee/espresso place right next door to Geneva Bakery. So Matt threw his coffee, which was bought from Geneva Bakery next door, in the "shit-cannon", and decides to give this place a shot. This coffee-shop along the Geneva St. strip was packed with older gentlemen, chillin and bullshitting in the shop. Matt ordered a med (16oz) Depth-charge which cost $2.25. The coffee tasted a lot better than the Sanka coffee from the next door bakery. Matt had a little time to have his breakfast, and couple of the older men saw my uniform and chatted with Matt. Matt told his 4 colleagues about this place, and we came back in afternoon for another quick perk for the rest of the day. Matt and 1 of them ordered the White Mocha, the 2 others ordered the Latte and the other one ordered the Mocha. All of our drinks, including Matt's morning Depth-charge were good. Next time, if Matt comes to the area, he'll definitely come back to this coffee-shop, only if the older men don't discuss about their lost love-ones from their homeland of China. read more

Oh Claddagh I had such high hopes for you! This coffee shop seemed to be the nicest and most convenient in that area of the Excelsior. However, as I walked in I was surprised to see how a tad over priced their coffees were. I am used to paying a high price for coffee but this seems more expensive than Starbucks! The coffee is strong and I usually stick to the hot chocolate that for some reason isn't very hot everytime I order it. There is free wi-fi, but it is almost impossible to get a plug for your laptop and even less of a chance to find a table. You will find the shop full of men chattering it up for hours, loud elevator music playing, and you will forced to sit on the couches. This wouldn't be an issue if they were more comfortable and there was more space for people to walk in and out of the couch area without you moving or saying excuse me/thank you every 2-3 minutes. Had a coffee craving and this was the nearest coffee shop to my house. Theres only one working as both the cashier and barista, so if there happens to be a few people before you or someone ordering a lot, you're going to have to wait. I got the white mocha and it costs roughly a little over $4. I watched as the girl scooped in powder for the white mocha and I was pretty surprised because I was expecting a white mocha sauce. I tried my first sip as out I walked out of the coffee shop and I was very displeased. It tasted like raspberries to me for some reason... odd right? The more I drank the more it tasted like raspberries. I drank about only half before I tossed it away. Quite disappointed with the whole experience and I wont be coming back again. read more

If I don't get my daily caffeine fix, I turn into a whinier, more lethargic version of the Incredible Hulk. I got a habit kid, and I got it bad. I had the worst chai of my life here, but I've learned since then to stick to lattes, which warm me up like a steamy little teapot. I go for the basic non-fat latte and snag a spot on the bench out front as I take my first few engine-revving sips. The general atmosphere of the place is lacking anything that would make me want to hang out longer than that, though they do have a few couches and a library for reading. I've been going here off and on for the past couple years, solely because it is the only coffee shop in the area. The coffee is usually pretty basic, nothing special or amazing. The chai is pretty nasty though, and most of the cookies are really dry and old. I do like their selection of syrups that they have, and the free wifi is handy. The cashier that seems to always be there is friendly, but slow and screws up the transactions pretty often. The thing about Claddagh that really bothers me though is the cleanliness and care of the place. I was there last week and it was full of flies. Just dozens of big flies swarming in the middle of the store. The counter where they keep the cream and sugar is usually a mess and the whole shop feels dusty and stale. For any other city, Claddagh would be your average mediocre coffee shop; however in San Francisco when you have places like Blue Bottle, Four Barrel, Ritual, Sightglass, etc. the bar is set really high. Claddagh just doesn't compare. For me its a last resort to get my fix of caffeine. read more
