NEW ENGLAND STEAMERS and FRIED CLAM BASKET
Jasmine C.

Visiting Portland and we stopped at the clam bar for a quick lunch. The service was great we were greeted and given recommendations on what to get. I ordered the New England steamer and it was a good portion and was delicious. I tried my friend's fried clams with fries and they were well seasoned and crispy. And the strawberry lemonade? So refreshing! The seating was outdoors with plenty of tables and shade. Will definitely be back the next time I'm in town!

CLAM CHOWDER LOBSTER ROLL

My friend and I met up in Portland for the day. I enjoy trying lobster rolls and she likes to try clam chowder. This is a cute spot on the outskirts of the Old Port - with planes flying closely overhead. The people were friendly. The fries and lobster roll were good. The lobster had a little bit of creme sauce. I didn't mind it - but it isn't a traditional Maine lobster roll. The clam chowder was not a New England clam chowder. There weren't many clams, and it had a clear broth - fennel, bacon, and herbs. Perfect for the lactose-intolerant - just not traditional. I would visit again - for a drink and social time, despite the aircraft.

On a Sunday afternoon, the wife and I decided we were going to swing by this little roadside stand and eating area. The experience was surprisingly great and the food was pretty outstanding. I had the clam chowder which was a much different chowder than I've ever had before, as it wasn't cream based, nor was it red sauce, but was delicious riddled with bacon, bits, and many herbs and spices. The clam roll that I had was Hardy and delicious as you could probably see by the photo. My wife had the fried fish sandwich and fries and thought it was great. The staff was wonderful, they were super friendly and they had pretty great looking merchandise that you could buy for the clam roll especially my favorite was a Wu-Tang reference shirt that I wanted to pick up. The ambience is great, although a little noisy right next to many cars going to South Portland and downtown along with the planes flying above every few minutes, but the lights hanging from the sky and the picnic tables and everything is a nice touch for a summertime treat. I definitely recommend this place if you want some fresh seafood at reasonable prices.

We traveled to Maine for 4 hrs in driving rain only to find it was going to snow where our restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner was located. We checked into our hotel, that served dinner but by reservation on Thanksgiving and we didn't make a reservation, didn't expect we'd need one. Next best thing was to order fried clams and a lobster roll from the Portland clam bar! The fried clams were delicious and crispy along with the fries that had a nice crunch on the outside and were soft and warm on the inside. Cole slaw was tangy, dressing a bit on the vinegary side. The lobster roll was huge, with a perfectly toasted and buttery hot dog bun, loaded with sweet lobster meat. Not a traditional Thanksgiving for sure, but it will do

FISH & CHIP

Super cute place right off the highway. There are picnic tables with umbrellas, a open air tent area that can have roll down windows for inclement weather, and a little beer garden to the side. Service was friendly. Bathrooms are decent. We ordered a clam roll and the fish and chips. The french fries were so good! The clam roll was ok, I just personally prefer straight up breaded, fried clams, where this roll had seasoning which I didnt love. But I'm sure the average person would love it. The fish that came with fish & chips was stunningly beautiful. The batter gave a wonderful crust and the fish was a nice cut and was perfectly cooked. I would definitely go back and try a few other things off their menu.

Went here last night for the first time after eating to try it out for so long so we were excited to finally get here. They have such a cool little spot next to the shipyard with so many seating options outside! Service was super friendly and quick. They have such a great spot here and it's perfect for a nice day. We got two beers out of their great summer selection and we enjoyed them a lot. For food we got the smash burger. It was a very good burger and these are the way smash burgers should be. I was surprised with how good it was. The party had crispy edges and was super flavorful and the bun was soft and buttery. With it we had fried with a side of their Mac sauce. The fried are basic but if you get the Mac sauce to dip them in you'll be happy you did! We also got the Jalisco steamers. Streamers in a beef broth with brisket and peppers. It was insanely good! The clams soaked up some of that flavor and tasted so good and you have to dip the bread in as well. We have never had steamers like this and we're not disappointed. Definitely come here in the summer while you can. You will love it. And the prices of the clams here are better than most places as well for how many you get. Would highly recommend this place and we will be back to try some of their other menu items soon!

What a great atmosphere!! Nice outdoor covered seating looking over the bay. Food was amazing!! And Alyssa was Fantastic. So friendly and helpful. We had the sampler roll platter and a cup of the clam chowder soup. Best I've ever had.

Massachusetts transplant to Arizona came to Maine on a mission to find a great clam roll. Sweet jeezus! Whole-belly clams on a perfect buttered and fried roll, homemade chips, and super yummy coleslaw with a bit of a kick! The patio and picnic tables are quintessential New England clam shack. This place is awesome!

CLAM CHOWDER

Chowder was not creamy but it was still very good! And good seasoning on the fries. Outdoor seating was very nice

Have been wanting to try this place since they opened this summer and finally made it a couple days ago. They don't technically have inside seating yet but it seems like they are working on that. They did have a little trailer with space heaters and it was warm. They have lots of picnic tables and cute areas for the summer. This winter it also looked like they were selling trees. The service was great and everyone was super nice. Now for the food it was okay but not the best. I got the fried clams and for being a clam bar I thought they would be better. They had a good flavor. They also had a very small menu. I am excited to see what they do with this place and to come back in the summer!

The steamed clams and brisket. It had jalapeños in it wow.cold beer on the side

The worst, most overcooked fried clams I have ever eaten. I would say they were practically burn. Very crunchy Never again.

According my Mainer hubby, this was the best one of the several we've had--buttered and toasted brioche bun, very fresh lobster meat. We tried the mayo-lime sauce, as hubby did not want a "naked" lobsta roll. If you like your lobster rolls classic (light mayo, maybe a squeeze of lemon), this sauce works perfectly! Potato salad was also very much on point. If the wait to sit down and dine in is too long for your liking, they do have a to-go menu (which is what we did today) . Quick and easy, with very friendly service! Do note that their to-go menu is a shorter version of their dine-in menu, as the food is coming from different kitchens! There is also outdoor seating, which is basically 2 curbside parking spots blocked off for picnic tables. Very nice to enjoy the weather if it is pleasant outside.

It gave the entire evening that authentic, working-harbor Portland feel while still feeling polished and comfortable. We started with a crisp, refreshing local Belgian wheat beer that was light, slightly citrusy, and an ideal match for the seafood-heavy meal ahead. For appetizers, the grilled octopus was excellent -- tender with a proper char, beautifully seasoned, and full of flavor. It came with pommes dauphine, pine nut and espelette vinaigrette, and garlic whip. There was a light touch of oiliness toward the end of the plate (typical with generous finishing oil), but it didn't detract from what was otherwise a very well-executed dish. The dozen raw oysters were exceptional. All three varieties were local Maine and served ice-cold: Fare Well (Newcastle), Nautical Sisters (Yarmouth), and Weskeag (South Thomaston). I had them with just the mignonette and was rewarded with clean, sweet, briny flavor. These were some of the freshest, highest-quality oysters I've had in Portland. The main courses were the real stars. The Stuffed Lobster Frites was outstanding. The lobster was sweet and perfectly cooked, the claws were pre-cracked for easy access, and the tail was cleanly split with a buttery, herby breadcrumb crust that added excellent crunch and texture. It was accompanied by scallop mousseline and dijonnaise. This is a premium dish, but the quality and generous portion made it feel worth it. Equally impressive was the seared scallops, served in a cast-iron skillet. The scallops had a beautiful golden crust and were cooked exactly right -- sweet and tender. They were paired with crisp corn, applewood-smoked bacon, kale, and roasted peppers in a light, well-balanced cream sauce. This dish avoided the common issue of being overly salty. Every bite offered a nice variety of textures and flavors, and the cast-iron kept everything hot throughout the course. It was precise, thoughtful cooking. We finished with the Chocolate Silk Pie*, which was rich, silky, and deeply satisfying with lovely hazelnut undertones and a crunchy chocolate-hazelnut topping. The presentation was beautiful, and it made for a perfect ending. Service was attentive and professional without feeling rushed or intrusive. The pacing between courses was ideal. Bottom line: If you're serious about high-quality Maine seafood, Scales is delivering at a very high level right now. The ingredients are pristine, the execution is precise, and the waterfront setting (especially from a window seat) adds real character. This was easily one of the best meals I've had in Portland. I'll definitely be back. Highly recommended for seafood enthusiasts, special occasions, or anyone who appreciates a restaurant that respects its local ingredients.

My server was nice enough, though a bit aloof. When I booked, there was only bar seating available, which is not my preference, but I was so excited to dine here that I did not care. I wish I had made a different decision. I found the cocktail list uninspiring, so I started with a lovely Albariño. I ordered the halibut ceviche, swordfish, and griddled brown bread. Being a Bay Stater, I was looking forward to the brown bread. It never arrived. No one noticed. My server did not say anything until the end, where I was offered a free coffee and ice cream/sorbet. Insulting does not begin to describe it. The halibut ceviche was delicious. It was briny and salt and tasted of the sea. I loved it. The swordfish was rich, heavy, and overcooked. I am always cooking heirloom beans, so maybe that is why I did not love the beans. I don't think I even ate half of my entree. At dessert, my server noted the missing bread and offered a sorbet or ice cream. However, he offered after I had ordered the strawberry cream puff, so it seemed like it was an option for that, not an in lieu of offer. It was not clear until the sorbet arrived along with my cream puff. The strawberries had no flavor. I took a few bites of dessert and was over the whole experience. My server did clearly offer a complimentary coffee though, which again, was insulting. From what I can tell, the kitchen never saw the mostly untouched food, due to my seat the bar. The server placed my dishes below the bar. However, he didn't ask any questions about why I didn't finish the dishes, so it must have been clear to him. I do wish the kitchen had been informed as well. I have never regretted a meal as much as the one I had at Scales. I was looking forward to a delicious dinner with a few glasses of wine. Instead, I left hungry and sad. Scales is a waste of time and money. It's a definite skip in Portland.

The 'flavors' I got were the Maine (mayo & chive), Connecticut (butter), and chipotle. The butter was definitely my favorite one, and I wish I had gotten a full size of that instead. The others were not bad at all, I just liked the butter the best. I will say, the chipotle didn't have any discerning flavor to me and tasted exactly like the other mayo one just without the chives. I was expecting a little spice but did not get any. I would say this place lived up to the hype for me. The lobster was absolutely delicious.
