The manager or owner seemed stressed while trying to fix the issue, but there was little communication or customer recovery. A quick acknowledgment or small gesture would have helped - free beer or fries goes a long way toward recovering after your tech fumble. Overall, it wasn't terrible, but between the average food, TV problems, and limited response, I'd probably choose another place next time.

This website "Filtered" my review of Class of 47 posted last night (4/17/2013) because some in-house bureaucrat (or should we be generous and blame it on software that kicks-out any word use that could be construed as foul language) felt my comments were, in their words, a paid for review of this bar according to their guidelines. Given this was not the case, I am re-posting my review with the 3 offending word deleted and the appropriate college level clarity substitutions made. See if you can "guess" which words caused my fall from grace. Hopefully, this will appease the sensibilities of the moral's squad and convince them I'm not a shill for this establishment. ============================================================= "The people that come to this bar and whine about bad service or moan 'n groan because they didn't get an umbrella in their drink simply don't understand the unwritten rules of patronizing the Class of 47. Simply put the Ownership (which actually OWNS and doesn't Lease) and the staff's mentality has been and will always be to take care of their "regulars" first and give a rat's derriere about everyone else second. Do some of the bartenders treat people like horse manure? Yep, they do and, unfortunately, some times for no good reason whatsoever. As someone from out of state, however, I've always found that the best time to show is in the afternoons or on non-weekend nights when the staff is not stressed. If you like this type of "dive bar" atmosphere and are willing to invest the time in getting to know the staff and the other regulars, this is a fantastic place with great drinks. If you're one of those whip out the platinum AMEX card type of people that believes that snapping your fingers and ordering a dozen shots of Patron at a time is going to get you somersault bar service, you're ultimately going to go home feeling like you've had your nose rubbed in excrement. read more

Class of 47 has created some of my best bar memories. My friends and I frequent the bar every time we are in town. The best bartender is a gal named Trish. She is hilarious, Never a dull moment. Seems that there are a lot of regulars who come in for a quick drink or two, share some entertaining conversation with Trish and leave knowing they spent their $ well and had a great time. I have never seen anyone work as fast as she does serving booze to a bunch of half drunks on a Saturday night. Not sure how any one can be sober and treat the customers as if they are all normal. Far from it.LOL This place gets packed so best get there early. read more

We are a bar....We have only been serving food for a month or so....We're a business trying to stay afloat during this shit show of a pandemic! this place is the real deal. cheap strong drinks. they just put in a bunch of flat screen tv's, making it awesome for sports. they got a guy making killer baja style taco's all day on sunday's and it's happy hour during the football games. crowd is fun, unlike other stuck up bars in newport. shoot some pool, listen to music and meet some cool people. wish i could come to the class more often. read more

I've been coming to Class of 47 since 2011 and every visit is a blast! My dollar bill that was stapled to the ceiling 9 years ago still hangs with my name written on it. The other day Holly served me and she was very sweet. Highly recommended for someone wanting a drink and food. This was a fun dive bar at one time, but sh*t happens when management does not crack down on the staff. Also, if you decide to drop in watch out for Ashley the bartender and Matt the ugly door men, they like to team up and over charge folks that are bit too tipsy; when he is not painting his nails black (whatever) he will give signs to Ashley to short change folks. While your walking along the boardwalk at Balboa Newport - you have to stop in this zappy bar! Write your name on a dollar and add it to the collection on the ceiling. Check out the photos of the legendary John Wayne who used to frequent the bar. The bartenders will joke with you, laugh with you, and make a pretty darn good cocktail!
