Walked in on a Sunday afternoon. Hopping to find a new local dive bar. This was not it. Definitely felt like the moment we walked in every one was like who are you and why are you here. Beer was stale /flat and honestly tasted bad. Thank goodness they were only 6.50 each we drank less than half and left. And honestly we won't be back. No need to with the attitude we received from the Sunday female bartender with the blonde pixie cut. It was a drive up PCH on a Sunday. We stopped here for the coveted amazing Cheeseburger. It was actually not bad. Filled with a bunch of men talking sports and swapping war stories at the moment. I am big on people watching and this place served up enough of that to satisfy my apatite . Lots of Tv's, dark and very odd rooms all over the place. I came by here for a drink with a buddy, and I'm glad I did. The Place, or what is affectionately known as "The Palace", is a dive bar on PCH in Corona del Mar. You basically walk in and there are about 6 seats at the bar. There are also a few big tables for communal seating, TVs and surprisingly food. All of the foregoing adds to the charm of the place: 5 Stars. Mary is an excellent bartender. In addition to pouring stiff drinks, she compared sushi restaurants with my buddy bc they both live in coastal South County. We also struck up a convo with a regular patron and compared notes on restaurants: Fukn Yelpers! Hahahahaha: 5 Stars. Do yourself and hit this dive bar if you are looking for a place to drink before or after the many restaurants in the area. Bar back is nothing special just the taps and bottle shelves against an old wooden paneled wall. Lots of medium sized tvs make it a good bar to watch the game. Very friendly bartenders. This is a great dive bar!! right on PCH, cant miss it! The parking cane be a pain at some times. We parking right behind the bar. Went in for lunch and a beer after a long day of work. The bartender got our drinks right away and we ordered from the menu. They do have a lot to choose from. We sat down in the front near the window. This place is your usual dive bar. That not clean look with regulars hanging around drinking. The TV's had mostly golf on... Really what a boring sport. they need to have full contact golf and make it interesting. HAHA... Well back to the bar. The food came out hot and was really good for a dive like this. I got the chicken sandwich and my friend got the burger. both were good. the service was walk to the bar if you needed another drink. Went there for drinks tonight. Little fella named Charlie was getting shit faced behind the bar. Taking shots with his friends, Not charging them for drinks. Says he's open until 12. Around 10:45, I think little Charlie started to feel all of the shots he was taking because he abruptly shouted that everyone needs to pay their tabs and leave! No problem. My wife and I finished up our 2 drinks we ordered. I handed little Charlie my bill and he looked at it and shook his head and mumbled something under his breath. I asked him politely what he said because I didn't hear him. He mumbled it again. Still not hearing what he said, I told him to have a good night. All 5ft of little Charlie ran around the bar and came charging at me and my wife asking what the F we said to him. I told him to have a good night and he proceeded to get in my face . As I walk away he gets in my wife's face and picks up an object from the floor and holds it to my wife's face and continues to spout his drunken nonsense. I asked him why he was so upset and he said get the fuck out of my bar, you cheap asses only tipped me $2. Bro... really?? We ordered a beer and a mixed drink. The total was $8 and I tipped him $4. We wanted to try a new place because our favorite place On the stocks closed. We should have just kept on driving. Sitting is horrible and the place is super small. Sitting in the back is all at an angle and the tables wobble. They leave water outside in the sun with a towel covering it then will serve you that if you need water. Also the Bloody Mary was really bad even though we had been told it was great. We didn't order food because the drink was bad and the prices were insane for bar food. It was nice to go in and cheer on the Chiefs with Mary, she had been a staple of the establishment for longer than I can remember. It's the staff that makes a place. The Place was we're we could go and see a familiar face, were Mary knew your drink and always had a good laugh. It's not easy to find an excellent bartender these days and when you do, they keep you coming back. When the atmosphere is just ok but the staff is amazing you compromise because it's nice to have a bar like cheers where everybody knows your name. This was the kind of place a woman felt comfortable going in alone to have a drink after work because Mary took care of you and introduced you to other regulars so you always felt wecome. My gal pal and I cruised around for a spot to hang out at and came across this...The Place. We didn't know what to expect except that it was a sports bar so we were more than a little intimidated when we walked in and everyone, including the bartender, gave us a very thorough lookover. We hurriedly found two chairs at the bar and sat down. We ordered our drinks (I gave my friend some grief for ordering WINE at a place like this - I had beer, ah-thank-you) and peered around to familiarize ourselves with the surroundings. It quickly became apparent that this place was a place for regulars. Everyone knew everyone, all ages and all races. Sounds cozy except when you're not in that social network. We decided to settle in for an hour or two so we ordered a club sandwich and a dinner salad to share. I'm going to guess food isn't their forte since the dinner salad wasn't more than a plate of romaine with a slice of tomato on top. The club sandwich was a slight improvement except the bacon was 1/20th degree away from being inedibly burnt. Eventually we decided that we should move it along and make room for all the regulars who came pouring in. We politely declined to order a second round and asked for our check (pretty decent drink prices). We paid the very reasonable tab and made our way back onto PCH to seek out more adventures. read more
