Coney Island restaurants have had Greek food for as long as anyone can remember because many were operated by Greek immigrants. I'm not sure if Phillip, the owner, is Greek, but the food certainly tastes like food I ate in Athens last month. There's a level of care that you don't expect when the prices are so reasonable. Let's talk about the chicken gyro in that picture. The chicken has a beautiful char on it every time (I have several carry out orders to prove it). I could seriously pick out the chicken and eat it by itself...it's that good. The fries remind me of Rally's fries. I could enjoy just a plate of those and be happy. The service is also crisp and friendly. But, it's important to note that the chicken gyro has cheese on it if you don't ask for it without cheese. And, they serve it with each dressing. It's basically a chicken and cheese sandwich. But, you can get a very good tzatziki sauce with it if you ask. Just make sure they don't add cheese to it (which they will if you don't ask). There are other things on the menu - a lot of things - and they're good. But, that chicken gyro is all I need. read more

Are you FKG KIDDING ME?!!?!~? Sept 22, I went there to grab a Cornedbeef and Pastrami to go. Got home, unpacked it and opened it up to add my condiments. The Corned beef was actually DEHYDRATED SHOE LEATHER!!!! THIN as pepper, a few pieces and tough as fk!! The Pastrami was real, but VERY LITTLE. The place was empty and they just remodeled. Now, listen. I'm a raccoon. I have been known to eat trash from time to time. when my tail wagging led me to classic Cony Island for the first time, I will not lie, I didn't think that this meal would be any different than what I usually find in the dumpster outback. However, somebody brought me a breakfast burrito and I realized that I was being ridiculous. For many years, that was my relationship with this establishment: go in, get food, enjoy its taste, hope it doesn't kill me, repeat. However, as of recent days, things have gotten kind of weird in this fine place of eating, even for a raccoon. For example, the last time I dined here, I witnessed a waiter lean over the lunch counter and hand a check to a customer who was still eating, and ask that customer if they would run the check to another table for her. Now I'm a raccoon. I don't really know how a job works, but I am pretty sure that you're not supposed to ask your customers to do half of your job for you, even if it is busy. Not had the misfortune to be considered one of the benefactors to these awkward events, so I can't hold it against my experience. But in the odd and astonishing world We now live in, I cannot turn my cute little eyes away from it either. read more

It is really a shame that this business has become what it is, which is a sad excuse for what it once was. I have been patronizing this business over three owners and countless changes in staff, but the last transition has been the worst, and I will not be back. The food has went from homemade to canned, and powdered. The hamburgers and chicken breasts, once succulent and juicy, are now leather. I really feel sorry for the past owner Paul, he worked hard to make this place an important part of the community. It is just a sad shell of what it once was. Tucked away in residential Hazel Park, this gem of a family/Greek diner is clicking on all cylinders. The friendliest staff tends to your needs. You'd swear they're all immediate family and you've just been adopted. The restaurant is clean as are the restrooms. It's really big, too. I should've counted the chairs. I wonder if you could fit 100 people in this quaint little diner. Everything on the menu that I've tried is fabulous. A truly authentic Greek cuisine. I've never had breakfast here...you're on your own there. Here's a pro tip you need to try. Take your pick of the Cobb Salad or the Large Greek. I usually get extra beets. What a wonderful surprise! We tried to go to about 5 other restaurants, but everyone seemed only to be doing drive-throughs. We just happened to drive by this place and it looked like it was open, so we stopped. Large menu, great cook, and waitress, both very friendly and helpful...... Had the chicken rice soup, (avgolemono) the fried shrimp dinner, and dessert (cheesecake). My friend had the seafood combo, all excellent! I used to live in the Detroit area for many years, spent a lot of time at Middle Eastern restaurants, so I love the food.....I was not disappointed!!!! I've eaten here before and have always had good food however this review is primarily about the unprofessional, rude owner. This in no way reflects on the staff that was trying to help me at the time. Last November my mother-in-law purchased a $30 gift certificate for me to this place since she knew I liked to go here for lunch. This was on 11/17/2021. I went in today (9/13/2022) to pick up a to-go order and was told that they wouldn't honor the gift certificate. The owner, whose name and signature was on the gift certificate said that they changed the rules and that it was only good for 3 weeks. When I questioned that, it was "they're only good for a year". When I pointed out that the date on the signed gift certificate was November of 2021 and that it hadn't been a year, he changed his tune again and said it was only good for 90 days because some woman tried to use an expired gift certificate. What would someone else trying to use an expired certificate have to do with honoring the valid one I had? I asked him to honor the gift certificate with his signature on it since it fell within the 1 year timeframe and he flatly refused. When I tried to press the issue and then asked for a refund he got belligerent asked how he could know I purchased the gift certificate. ??? I pointed out again that my mother-in-law purchased it and gave it to me as a gift. He turned and walked away from me and pointedly ignored me from that point on. In essence, the owner of this establishment was willing to sell a gift certificate and take a customer's money but when it came time to redeem the gift certificate, he was unwilling to honor it nor refund the money. All because he had a problem with another customer (not my issue) and he "changed" the rules without notifying people who had already purchased the gift certificate. I will definitely not be eating here again and would recommend others avoid giving their business to a business owner who is willing to basically take money from people without giving them value for what was purchased. Note: I received a call back and was told the certificate expired after 90 days even though it didn't say it on the certificate. Supposedly people are "told" when the purchase it. I checked with the person who gave me the gift and they don't recall it being mentioned to them. Also, why would the owner originally say it was good for a year and then change it to 90 days? I also asked when that changed and I was told at the end of 2021. It seems sort of unreasonable to change the rules after the fact and not let people know. read more

Ordered the meatloaf special at lunchtime which was 1399 everything tasted fine lmy only problem is when the bill came the 1399 had been increased to 1482 which included the tax but then when I got checked out by the Cook he had an additional tax on there and I ended up paying 1580 20 believe and I noticed when he did it I just didn't speak anything but it's unfortunate that this over pricing occurs but I can't imagine that it would be an accident and if people know what they charge for food and it's unfortunate because I get enjoyed my meal I can't imagine going back because of this. read more

I would really give this place 2.5 stars (for breakfasts only, I haven't had lunch here). I've been here several times with high hopes only to be vaguely disappointed when the food arrived. My main complaint is the "hash browns". I don't know about you, but I like my hash browns crispy, and to be noted, they aren't hash browns here, they're american fries. I can tell they pre-cook them, then throw them on the grill again, which results in a potato mash with a few crispy pieces in them; i.e. not good. I also ordered a poached egg, and it arrived in a pool of water, which is unappetizing to say the least. drain the water people! Bright sides: staff was very friendly and the toast actually came out toasted (not the warmed bread you get at some places). I really want to like this place because it's close by, but until the food improves a bit, I'll be going elsewhere. read more

Great coney/American selections. Staff is amazing, I love Eva! it's a smaller location with much work in the carryout department. Always clean and friendly service. Free WIFI which is great if you're looking to get caught up on your yelp reviews :) They make their lemon rice soup without flour (last I checked, as I currently understand it is now under new management so this may have changed) which is a great thing for me because I am allergic to wheat and can rarely enjoy this treat. Very family friendly and accommodating for those with food sensitivities. There is even space that can be rented out/reserved for parties or meetings. read more

This is an HP lifer review... If you have lived in HP for any amount of time you know the diner options are nill. We have one great place that never disappoints, Country Boy, but it's nice to have another option and we finally have one!! This place is great, I've been in a few times now and am never disappointed!! This morning I stopped in for a carry out on my way to work. 3 different ladies asked if I was helped, and considering the place was pretty busy I thought that was great. All the servers are friendly and happy. If you have read any of my other reviews, then you may know i'm a toast hound. Classic Coney has some of the best seedless rye toast i've ever had!! I know for some that's not saying much, but to me it's a big deal. It's like they bake it and let it cool long enough just to toast it. It's divine, seriously!! ( I don't know if they bake it or not, it sure does taste that way though). They have all the regular coney offerings and some nice additions that you wouldn't normally see. Also, another good note, the restaurant has a glass like wall, that they have much larger tables on one side of, so large groups are welcome!! The Lemon Rice soup was delicious and the hot Corned Beef and Pastrami Sandwich was the best I've EVER had. Fast, friendly service too. Horrible, horrible and lastly horrible. There was hair in my daughter's food. Because it wasn't on top she ate some of the food then found it. They refused to do anything for us because "she ate too much". She actually had to pull the hair from her mouth, disgusting huh ? My wife ordered hash browns cooked light, they came damn near burnt on top. We sent them back and the cooks put them on another plate and mixed the dark parts into the middle thinking she would just eat it that way. This place is a complete dump. Food is decent here but my only problem is that I keep witnessing the cooks do nasty shyt. First time they stuck a finger in my spinach pie which is why my man and I now call them finger foods. Today I witnessed the cook making food, playing on his phone, digging in his pockets and then taking dirty dishes to the tank, playing with his phone again and then started cooking again all while wearing the same freaking gloves . Luckily all I ordered was fries so I took them and skedaddled. This place used to be one of our favorites but lately we've been disappointed. They recently sent burnt fries with my husbands order and they were burned to a point where who ever cooked them and or packed them could see it and they sent it anyway. So the next time we ordered we mention this and when we got that order, the meatloaf was burned! We tip to ensure good service with great food and we haven't been getting that from these guys lately. This place doesn't look like much from the outside, but it is very pleasant inside. The service was incredible and way beyond standard. The waitress Cathy, I believe we name was, she insisted that we leave with to go cups since it was a hot day. The menu is very descriptive and most had pictures, and my food actually looked just like the picture, if not better. I will be returning many more times. Just had a late breakfast here with my husband for the first time. The staff was very friendly. There seemed to be a decent amount of regulars which I think is a good sign. We ordered and the food came quickly but not so fast that we enjoyed a cup a coffee while we waited. The food itself was really very good. I got my "usual" when I go out to breakfast which is the special that comes with eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, hash browns and pancakes. I liked everything! My hubby and I love this place. When you're so exhausted after a long day, you just want to go out but not necessarily for greasy, nasty food. So you come here. We're vegetarians and they never have problems making adjustments to the menu. They have great healthy food, great junk food, and tons of vegetarian options. Went here for lunch. Got the french dip special... omg horrible. It honestly tasted like steak boiled in water on a bun with some flavorless cheese. And I think the aujus served with it was the water they boiled it in. Fries that came with it were hard as a rock, overcooked. The waitress promptly disappeared after the sandwich came , never to be seen again until I was ready to leave and standing at the cash register. She saw I only ate half the sandwich and asked if I wanted to take the rest with me. I told her no it was hideous, the cook made eye contact with me just after that, then ran in the back.
