I feel like I have a very good handle on the Detroit/Surrounding Areas diner scene and I would recommend Village Grill. I'm an omelette guy, and the omelettes here are fantastic. They are both huge and well organized. I also like that their omelette selection has all the classics, but there are also options that go beyond the standard fare. Like I love their Bleu omelette, and I'm not sure I've seen anything similar to it at other diners. Also, the hash browns are fantastic and they give you a huge portion of them with your order. I loved the food! What sets Village Grill apart though is their set up and service. I absolutely hate diners where everyone is stacked on top of each other or spots where you have no table space. I like nice, big comfortable booths with ample privacy. Village Grill is awesome about this. Huge booths and if you're trying to get work done, it's an absolutely prime location. We were in Royal Oak and looking for a new breakfast spot so we decided to give this spot a try. It was busy on a Sunday morning, but we were able to get a table without a wait and the service was quite speedy. We started with saganaki, which is always fun. I had the bleu omelette - I really enjoyed how thinly the egg was prepared to allow the other flavors to come through. My wife had the Eggs Benedict. She said it was very good, but she was particularly happy that the hash browns were well done. She often asks for that, but restaurants don't always deliver. With these, you can tell that they spread it out on the grill to get it extra crispy. My daughter had one of the scrambles and really liked it. Wow. Stumbled upon this place just looking for some breakfast on a Sunday after the gym. We packed our patience as most places in Royal oak are just slow and the wait is crazy. We walk in and we are sat immediately (). The place has a number of people but they seem to be managing nicely. Server takes our order and brings drinks right away. This is the type of place that both EBS and I love to try, small business with a wide range of choices. While he would have loved the large portions, I am eating light but always try save room and calories for dessert. I know it is hard to mess up grilled cheese, but still it was just like the grilled cheese sandwich you grew up loving, simple and served with pickles (which would have been wasted on EBS). Chocolate ice cream hit the spot. I took a star off because they allow people in without masks. Single use menus, social distancing, staff in masks, hand sanitizer, and other measures follower. New favorite breakfast spot in the area, hands down. Everything you could want for breakfast, priced well, and executed correctly. I've tried a lot of diners in the area, and it's surprising how difficult making something so simple, simply taste good, can be (Alex's, Berkley Coney, The Avenue). I think this really comes down to ingredient quality, and attention to detail (seasonings, ingredient ratio per dish, etc), which this place seems to have down. I was also pleasantly surprised with their selection of lattes, cappuccinos, etc. Often, the only downside to choosing a coney/diner style restaurant for breakfast instead of getting a coffee + breakfast sandwich/similar directly from your favorite coffee spot is that you're settling for subpar coffee in leu if a satisfying meal. Not here!! I ordered a caramel latte and was genuinely pleased with the flavor and presentation - served in a lidless 16 or 20oz to-go cup with whipped cream and caramel drizzle. You can then grab a lid on your way out to carry it with you for the rest of your morning. In short, the food was delicious and the service was great. I will start by saying the wait staff are lovely and always very kind. However,I just had the most unpleasant, rude experience with the manager. My husband and I have been regulars at Village Grill for a couple of years. Sometimes we go for breakfast/lunch during the work day and bring our laptops. We always make sure we aren't loud and aren't preventing any other customers from using our table. We usually visit at off times. Today we were there a little over an hour (we are usually an hour or less). The manager rudely approached me and told me we need to pay because of a shift change. Fine. I proceeded to provide my credit card and was then told their machine wasn't working and I would have to pay cash. She went on to say that "whatever websites we visit" crashes their internet and every time we come in they have a problem with their internet. I was on Google at the time looking something up so hardly a crazy website. We paid cash and went to our car when my husband realized he left his phone on the table. He went back in and told them he was just running in to get the phone that he left (they were still open) and was told "no!" I have never been treated so rudely at an establishment, especially one I frequent. If you don't want someone to work there, don't offer free WiFi and outlets at every table. Also, whose internet can't handle two people online at the same time? We both work from home without issue. If it was really a problem, a nice conversation goes a long way. My husband and I have been to the Village Grill several times. Great homestyle food, friendly staff, and good sized portions. We ordered out from there tonight, and I can honestly say it was a big disappointment. When I picked up the food the woman behind the counter was friendly but seemed very anxious and busy with other things. The credit card machine was acting up with my order. Instead of letting me try to insert it again, she quickly grabbed it and it fell on the floor. Something that would've grossed me out before covid, but now even worse. I ordered an omlet with a choice of fresh fruit or hash browns. Normally I'd order the browns but I went with the fruit instead. My husband got a side order of hash browns, and the container was filled up, enough for at least two people. My fruit bowl was a joke - it was probably a one cup styrofoam bowl filled up less than half way. It was about 1/4 or 1/3 cup of fruit. Doesn't seem like a comparable item to me. At least fill up that small bowl! Won't be making that mistake again. And the omlet was much smaller in the carry out order, about half the size. Moral of the story: it's a great restaurant to dine in. And if you really want carry out, skip the fruit and go with the hashbrowns! read more

This is a cute Coney type place but maybe a little nicer than your typical Leo's. My husband got a Philly cheesesteak and absolutely loved it. We've been coming to village grill for a few years. It's now a staple since we have kiddos. It's our little regular family spot. We came a lot while I was pregnant with my first daughter, she's now two and all the staff is so friendly with her and genuinely interested in how we're doing. It's nice to come back to a place that's happy to see you. The owner is always pleasant and you can tell how hard she works for her business. During the pandemic we weren't dining in, but carrying out when we could. Abby is typically our server and she is so great with our toddler. The food is always great and an easy quick meal (helpful when you have an antsy 2yo) Whenever my family comes to visit, they ask to order village grill! It's really that good and carries out well. It was okaaaaay, but tasted like the bread was stale. Here was probably my mistake but I had to try...the crab cake benedict. Wow...B.A.D. First of all, it's KRAB cake benedict, so basically a fish like patty, deep fried. Tasted like fish and grease. One smart move I did make was to ask for the eggs and hollandaise sauce on the side, so after determining that the krab cakes were inedible, I ate the eggs and English muffin. The hollandaise sauce was also clearly a packet, so it had zero flavor too. With all that said, I'd say this place is safe if you like diner breakfast but don't stray from the basics or you'll be stuck with cheap imitations. I have been going to this place thru name changes and renovations. I always loved it. When my friends are over from the UK we start everyday here. Then yesterday happened. I had several errands to run and felt I needed a good breakfast in my stomach. I rushed to get here before 11 am to take advantage of the breakfast specials. I was seated by 10:50 and my order was taken by 10:54. I specifically ordered off the "breakfast special" menu. When my server brought my bill it was regular price. So I asked my server if this was a mistake. She said no. The computer cuts off the specials at 11:00 am. I am going to call BS on this. The order should be generated when it is placed. I was given a coupon for a free breakfast, just because the person at the desk at the Hotel Royal Oak thought it was cool to see someone from Hawaii checking into their hotel for the first time. But that was pretty cool too. I ended up coming to the Village Grill anyway and forgetting about redeeming the coupon for free breakfast, but however I did purchase breakfast in a takeout container. I eventually had this breakfast for a late lunch in Detroit before the long drive back to Grand Rapids and needed the energy from the food I was eating. And so, Village Grill is a quaint Diner and eatery that is your neighborhood place to dine. If you are staying in Royal Oak or just passing through on your way east, north, or south, like I am, the Village Grill can be your place to unwind and grab yourself some breakfast, lunch, or dinner, before you are on your way. The restaurant itself is relatively small for it size. I was here on a brief stay on Friday, October 21, 2016. The place was virtually empty when I was there and just a few diners on a casual Friday morning. I opted to do take out that day and ended up eating breakfast food for lunch. Thought that was pretty awesome, then again, a lot of places do that nowadays. Being that it was a minute walk from the Hotel Royal Oak, it was basically a means of convenience here and thankful that the average rating on yelp was pretty good already. The overall experience here at Village Grill was as good as it can be. Because I was here for about 15 minutes and had ordered take out, the experience was very limited, but I can tell you that the service here was rather average and that it was okay. The order came out after 15 minutes of waiting for it and the restaurant was clean and quite hospitable. The lady who waited on me was friendly and nice, which was nice to see on a Friday morning, especially when everyone's heading to the weekend - or at least already in a weekend state of mind. With that in mind, Village restaurant here in Royal Oak, Mi is located at 841 E 11 mile road. Not sure about the parking situation here, since i walked from the hotel on over. I'm sure there is nearby street parking in the residential areas, so that ain't too bad of a walk. They accept major credit cards, which is always a good thing, as well as cash. As far as menu options, they are a full service Diner, so pretty much anything and everything you'd expect from a Diner they would have. I often enjoy breakfast items more so than lunch and dinner items, so it was worth it coming here and spending $10 or so for breakfast that ultimately became a late lunch. Now I know why people eat at weird times while traveling on the roads, especially on the interstate and y'all have hours to drive east and west, north and south, throughout Michigan and beyond. I ended up getting a hash brown stir fry of sorts, along with a side of pancakes, which turned out to be larger than I thought and thicker than I had imagined it out to be. It turned out to be a nice lunch while hanging in Detroit while visiting Eminem's childhood home on Dresden Street, which ended up being a last minute thing. The hash brown stir fry ended up being pretty good and a definitely worth the calories after that long drive back across I-96 and I-196. The pancakes was fluffy and full of zest that was so good when I bit into it. Village Grill gave me mobile packets of maple syrup, which I used on said pancakes and it was great. Hard to believe that pancakes can be eaten anytime other than at breakfast time, but it can be! This meal was fun and enlightening for me. With a large ice tea from a pit stop at a Detroit area McDonald's, it ended up being a good meal while on the go. While my experience here was short lived at doing a take out ordering, I would like to come back here and dine in, if my future travels permit me to travel this way here in Michigan. Worth to take a look here and grab a bite to eat, if you are in the area. I'd recommend that. 4.0 stars for the food. Cheap and competitive prices. 4.0 stars for the friendly service.
