And what's more, they cool on a grill right behind the bar seating. When it comes to food, despite the down-home and welcoming atmosphere and attitude, I'm not 100% sold on it. My friend and I ordered orange juice, coffee, eggs Benedict, and a pastrami sandwich. The coffee I had tasted quite watery, and the pastrami sandwich was lackluster--I had to add mustard and Cholula to make it taste like more than mid-meat and toasted rye. The eggs Benedict was decent, but the hollandaise was a bit off. Overall, my friend and I both rated our dishes a 3/5. The total price was $36.63, which wasn't bad for the volume of what we ordered. I feel like I'll need to give this place a second shot to more properly assess it. I'll try to come back in the next month or so and try two more dishes. As simple as it sounds, it was classic and delicious! I almost never eat all my bacon or sourdough toast, but I did! My eggs were perfectly poached medium. The food was simple diner fare, no frills but when you're hungry and just want a meal with no fuss this is a great option. The chicken fried steak was a little tough and chewy but it was a decent sized piece of meat. The diner itself gives you that hometown feel with fridge magnets and tin wall art. A nice change from a lot of places that try too hard to make an identity for themselves. All in all I would recommend this place for sure. I explained my specific needs due to my disabilities, including sharing my diagnosis, and made it clear that I needed to be seated at a table outside in the shade, at least 6 feet away from others. The person assured me that there was one table set aside for me, and that everything would be prepared for my arrival. She told me the table would be held, so I confirmed that I was on my way. (From calling to arriving at the restaurant was 16 min And I had quoted that I would be there within 30 minutes and was assured I would have the table). However, when I arrived, I found that the table was occupied, and when I called to clarify, I was told there was nothing that could be done. Despite the earlier confirmation, I was left without the accommodations I had been promised. What I don't think many people understand about disabilities is how much energy, coordination, and planning goes into simply being able to go out. For people with disabilities, even something as simple as going to a restaurant can take a lot of effort--whether it's managing mobility needs, ensuring there's enough energy to make it through the outing, or just making sure everything aligns so that we can enjoy the experience. When accommodations are not met, it's not just about the frustration of a ruined meal; it's about the energy lost and the potential impact on the rest of the day and even the days ahead. For many of us, a meal out might be the only energy we have for the day. If that plan is disrupted, we often don't have the capacity to make another meal at home or change to another option. This can lead to a deficit that affects not only that day, but potentially the rest of the week and or months, as our energy reserves can be depleted. In contrast, for able-bodied individuals, missing a meal or switching to another restaurant is an inconvenience, but it doesn't have the same long-term impact because they still have the energy and flexibility to move on with their day. What I think needs to change is a higher level of intention and communication. If a reservation or accommodation is promised, it should be honored, or at the very least, the customer should be contacted in advance if circumstances change. Transparency is key--if an arrangement might not be available when the person arrives, it's important to let them know ahead of time. This mom and pop place was fantastic. You can tell people come here on a weekly basis. My steak, potatoes, eggs, and toasts with strawberry rhubarb game were delicious. My steak could have been a tiny bit more rare but I still enjoyed it. Bob, one of the owners, was a hoot. He is such a people person. He chatted it up with everyone. I lived in San Diego from 1996 to 2006 and never stepped in this place until June 17th, which was my birthday. I was greeted by a nice man named Corey and I believe the grill lady's name was Janet (I might be wrong on that). I was told what the daily special was and given a menu and a cup of coffee. It's a small cafe with counter seating and several tables. Very old school just the way I like. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, Scrambled Eggs and toast. While talking with Corey, he asked if I'd been there before and I said no and that I was in town to celebrate my birthday. Well, then the Red Carpet was rolled out. I received a birthday counter mat and a delicious homemade Red Velvet cupcake. You have a good feeling being there and everyone was friendly. One of the things I miss about living in SD. Great food and great service make this place very special! The casual, family friendly vibe makes The Huddle a great place to grab a meal. We love that it is a family-run restaurant. The kids activity book that Cory designed is so fun. We dropped in on a Sunday morning with a group of 5 (3 adults, 2 kids), after we tried to go somewhere else but discovered there was a long wait. The Huddle really came through for us! We sat at the counter after a nice man eating alone kindly scooted over, and we were immediately welcomed. The kids got activity booklets that they loved! The books had been special designed to feature Casey, a dog belonging to our sever. When the kids found pictures of the dog, they would call out "Casey!" and then so would our serve. It was fun! Our food came out quickly. I had chicken and waffles, and there was a lot of it. I'm glad I brought my appetite. One of the kids had the chorizo and eggs breakfast special, and I snuck a bite. I ordered a chiliburger that came with chips and she asked if i wanted fries instead, I said if it comes with it, and she said of course then charged me and when was rude when confronted. The Huddle offers the range of the diner standards, and a good number of more unusual items (including creamed chipped beef - which is a rare find) - all prepared to order. It makes a difference. You can taste the difference. They take the time to do things right, and charge a surprisingly fair price to do it. I wish i lived closer so i could go more often. The owners and staff are so welcoming and are ready to take your order. This is a no frills place. They serve regular coffee, your standard American breakfast items and have one large grill behind the counter where all the cooking happens. It's a very small staff, but they manage to get all the orders taken and processed quickly. Today I had the spinach, bacon and feta omelette. It came with extra crispy hash browns and a side of toast. Lots of food with a good amount leftover. Very often you'll see flower arrangements that can be purchased outside the restaurant. They are very well priced (usually only a few dollars for a large bundle), purchased for cash only and I believe The Huddle gives the proceeds go to a local charity organization. read more

My barber recommended The Huddle to me as I am on the quest to find the best Chicken Fried Steak. I came here on a Sunday and it was busy. I grabbed a seat at the counter where I was able to watch my food be prepared and chat with the staff. The Inside = I felt as if I was warped back in time to a diner in the Midwest. It was great nostalgic feeling. The Service = Super friendly. If you are in a hurry, come back when you have a little time to spare. The Food = Good. I came here for the Chicken fried steak. It was a beef patty breaded and cooked on the flat top. The country gravy was good also. The hash browns were perfectly cooked nice and crispy. Perfect with eggs over easy. This place gives off family diner vibes. I went at 10 am on a Sunday and there was no wait. (Which after eating there left me very surprised!) What I got and recommend: - 2 eggs, hash browns and bacon (crisped perfectly) - short stack of apple butter pancakes (pancakes were great but I'd try something other than apple butter next time. What a lovely little diner! My hubby was looking for a new steak and eggs place since Troys closed (RIP!). We came here and he is a TOUGH critic and he said it was good! He had steak and eggs and I had chicken fried steak and eggs. Mine was a fried hamburger patty with sausage gravy. It was decent, but definitely needed the Tabasco that was provided. My hubby said his steak was over cooked, but it was still tender and flavorful. They also have shredded hash browns, which is the only kind of potato to have a breakfast! They also offer cheese for .$75 extra. Our eggs were cooked perfectly and the service was super fast and friendly. The story behind the restaurant is remarkable with the owners always helping the community by providing food and groceries especially those with AIDS in the earlier days.
