    Butter chicken, aloo gobi, samosa

Ok, after one takeout experience, I think this may be my favorite non-vegetarian Indian restaurant in Reno. Yes, I have tried others. Yes, I know Indian food! I lived in the Baltimore-DC area for 11 years and had amazing Indian food there. I agree with other reviewers that Clay Oven knows how to use spices in their dishes! Often my complaint with other Indian restaurants is that the spice level is missing, and I'm not talking about just heat level but actually earthy, herby flavors. The butter chicken was delicious. Not too oily! Not too creamy (yes, that can be a problem). I really enjoyed the aloo gobi because of the fresh herbs. And the prices are reasonable for what you get! I'm already planning my next takeout order.

First impression was, couldn't believe I ordered food from a Mini Mart/gas station but WOW! Just spent $2500 unexpected dollars on my motorhome A/C issue and a hotel room and needed some happiness and The Clay Oven came through!! Had the Butter Chicken and the Vegetable Hakka Noodle and I'm not a connoisseur of Indian food but the quality, taste, portion size, price and overall value was exceptional. Being a new resident of Reno, I'll be back for more "happiness" and recommend others to make your judgement after your belly is full !

I've had Clay Oven a few times from delivery and catering so I haven't actually been by the truck yet but the food is amazing! The first time I tried Clay Oven I ordered the butter chicken, the samosa plate, garlic naan, and the lamb briyani. The butter chicken with the garlic naan bread is some of the best butter chicken I've had. I was recommended the samosa plate and it did not disappoint. It comes with 2 samosas covered in chickpeas and a tamarind-mint sauce. While the dish itself is vegetarian they also have a vegan option available! Lastly, we ordered the lamb briyani. While I personally am not a huge fan of lamb I have to admit it was quite good, and my lamb loving friends literally ate it all up! The next time I was able to try Clay Oven was at a party. The food was delivered hot and ready to eat and was very well packed. There were a few other new dishes including chicken tikka masala and aloo gobi, cauliflower and potatoes. However, there is so much more on the menu I still want to try like the goat and other vegetarian dishes. The thing that makes Clay Oven stand out to me is the spices. All of the food is so rich and flavorful. The portions are very reasonable and I had enough to take leftovers for lunch the next day. This restaurant is definitely in my dinner rotation now!

Chicken Tikka Masala - spice level HOT

I was craving curry today and decided to order from here for the first time. Very easy ordering and pickup, everyone was kind inside. The chicken tikka masala is super tasty. I would consider their spice level HOT, to be a bit over the spice of a jalapeño and slowly builds. It's a nice kick but if you want more than that, I would get extra hot. I would have liked a bit more chicken in the curry but for the price it's very hard to beat around Reno. The garlic naan was also toasty and chewy to perfection. And the rice was good as well, a bit softer than most places I've had but it all tasted great. I would definitely come back here again.

If you love Indian food, this place is a must in Reno. Their menu is expansive, their food has been consistently AMAZING and delicious, friendly staff at pickup, inside of a gas station mart. This is one of our favorite spots for takeout in Reno. We are vegetarians and are delighted by all the options they have that are vegetarian and vegan. Our favorites are the Samosas, Paneer butter Curry and Vegetable Biryani (a must try!). Don't let the gas station fool you, it's so worth the try. We had this for Thanksgiving this year as well because we love it so much and most restaurants here for Thanksgiving don't have many vegetarian options.

Just way too oily. Taste is good but the so much of oil ruined the otherwise fine curry. Took a few bites but I felt weird and didn't wanted to get acidity so hard to throw away the rest. Next time I will definitely specify in my other to go very low on oil

My kids came with this time and enjoyed the pineapple shrimp curry and the mango curry (I forget…read morethe unique name of the mango dish but on the menu it had a crown icon and was not the mango one with the basil)-- both entrees were ordered in mild. These flavors were completely new to me, I've never had curries from an Indian restaurant that tasted like these. The pineapple curry was sweet but a little tangy and reminded me a bit of Thai curry (perhaps turmeric was really elevated in this curry?). The mango curry was also very sweet, it almost tasted like a sweetened butter chicken curry (specifically the northern Indian version of butter chicken-- if you know, you know). My son said the sweet flavor of the mango chicken curry reminded him of orange chicken from Chinese takeout and funny enough I thought it actually kinda did too! While these dishes were a hit with the kids (ages 7, 5, and 2) most adult tastebuds would prefer ordering them with at least some spice to balance out the intense sweetness (otherwise it can just seem "1 note"-- but 1 note "mild" was absolutely perfect for our young children who find even ground black pepper to be "spicy" haha). Maharaja Royal Bites, you just keep impressing me! I'm super happy we found these kid friendly options in your menu. Oh, ps, the kids LOVED their fried chicken appetizer too! Yelpers, ahelpful tip, we've noticed that here a "mild" spicy level can vary based on the dish. Sometimes it means literally no spice (like in the kid-friendly pineapple shrimp and mango curry) and other times we have found that it meant "yes, there is spice, and it's certainly more noticeable than black-- or even white ground-- pepper).

Maharaja made for a wonderful Mother's Day treat for Fritzie…read more First and foremost the food is great. There's no complaints there, but they didn't have Bhindi Ali, their Okra dish, it saddened me some. The rest of the meal I hoped would make up for it. We enjoyed their sampler (assorted snacks) which were an assortment of meat samosa, veggie samosa, chicken pakora, veggie pakoras and Aloo tikki. Delicious yet sizable bites to get you going. Their Lamb Curry, wonderfully made, tender. The sauce it was made with was delicious, the protein itself was gamy as to be expected, but day two after taking some home and eating it, not as much. Their Saag Paneer is what you would expect from most Indian restaurants, served piping hot, good cubes of cheese for texture and added flavor. Their Chicken Tikka masala was delicious, creamy, flavorful along with their garlic naan and of course we had to get Mango Lassis to drink. These are go to's in my opinion to determine your experience. They have to get these right and they didn't disappoint. The service was good, our waiters and hosts were kind and accommodating, I even got a little bit of history behind some of their wall art, the ambience was average, plenty of patrons holding conversations, enjoying meals, the music wasn't too loud from what I can recall, but it definitely carried the average volume. All in all, a wonderful visit. I recommend you try it for yourself.

The food is always delicious. We've been multiple times over the years and it never disappoints.read more

This is by far one of the worst Indian buffets I've ever been to…read more 1.) Options are limited somewhat. Two carts worth of food whereas others have three to four carts. 2.) No soup and salads are very limited and basic. 3.) Chicken Tikka Masala was very sweet but lacked any savoriness. I couldn't distinguish spices beyond the sweet taste. The sauce was so red that there is no way to make it that red with little to no distinguishable tomato base flavor that I can only deduce that they used a ketchup base and red dye. Ketchup because I swear I can taste a hint of ketchup under the sweet flavor. 3.) Goat curry was ok at first. It still lacked flavors that are the hallmark of Indian cuisine. However, they brought a new batch out and this batch was too salty. It overpowered any little flavoring that was there before. The meat wasn't as tender and you can tell the brine was overly salty because the goat meat was salty. 4.) The veggies were a complete miss for me. Again, no flavor other than sourness that is the yogurt. 5.) Chicken curry was mush. And the flavor was assaulting my senses that I found it weirdly... stale like a damp wash cloth left overnight. 6.) Naan was decent actually. Not as garlicky or buttery as some other places but it was fresh and crunch and fluffy. Too bad nothing was available to eat it with. Maybe it's off today or something but I can't forgive the $21.00 price tag. If it was $17 or less then I wouldn't bother with a review but after a 15% tip it was almost $25 I think.
