I stopped by with my husband and his mother for a late lunch. We ordered the classic Philly cheesesteak with an order of fries. My MIL ordered a caprese salad. We also got a few of their packaged drinks. The guy taking our order was very nice and there was plenty of seating and it seemed like there was additional seating upstairs, but we didn't have to head up there. The bathroom was nice and clean. As for the food, the Philly cheesesteak was massive, but tasted just okay. It seemed quite heavy on the bread. I think my husband maybe ordered wrong as he should've gotten the cheese whiz or maybe gotten the one with peppers. We've definitely had better cheesesteaks. The waffle fries were fries: tasty and delicious. My MIL's caprese salad was interesting. It was atop a bed of greens which was unexpected. It was also $15 which seemed a little extravagant for what it was. Overall, it was a decent meal and tasty. I'd hit it up for lunch of you're in a pinch and you'd definitely have leftovers for later as well.
I ordered two cheesesteaks and chicken wings from Cleavers. The cheesesteaks were excellent, flavorful, and delicious. The wings were amazing, plump, and cooked perfectly. My only complaint was that the cheesesteaks had too much ketchup, which overpowered some of the flavor. Next time, I'll ask for light ketchup. Overall, the food was great, and I would order again.
This is in my partners top 5 cheesesteaks. While I won't give my opinion on that I will say, they have lots of other options as well and they do make interesting chicken cheesesteaks that are super customizable. They have this really cool beer wall as well.
Absolutely run to Cleavers for a Philly or like I got the Mixed Cheese and it was delicious. Their bread is incredible. The waffle fries with Cheese wiz and the onion rings were perfect. We would come back just for the food. The place is big with and upstairs and downstairs seating options. Service was great and the place is very clean. I highly recommend you go there and try out their food.
This place was so delicious I ordered another one for my husband and flew it all the way to Phoenix. No joke it was still delicious 7 hours later! Tip for ordering...you can go up to the counter or go to a computer...but there is another computer off to the left up the stairs! Nice secret computer if you want to get out of the hustle and bustle.
When in Philly, I had to get a Philly Cheesesteak! Looking for restaurants near the Hilton Motto where I was staying, I saw that Cleavers was only a few blocks away from my hotel! I ended up coming back here twice because the food was just so good! It was a chilly evening both nights. When I walked inside the restaurant, the team had greeted me and asked if it was my first time, which it was! You could order at the Kiosks inside the restaurant, or at the front register. There wasn't anyone ahead of me so I ended up looking over the menu first before ordering. Cleavers offers cheesesteaks, beef, chicken, or veggie. You can also get it in a roll, wrap or bowl. Some of their sandwiches include the following Papa's Favorite Steak The Cleaver Effin Hot Steak Zinger Steak Chicken Cheesesteak Hoagie BBQ Chicken Chicken Parm and so much more! If you're looking for alternatives to the sandwiches, Cleavers does offer salads, Fries, egg rolls, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, onion rings, desserts and other options! I ended up getting the Cheesesteak Hoagie both nights, but tried different cheeses out. The first night I had the cheese whiz and the second evening I had the Cooper American cheese. I only had the steak and cheese on the seeded roll. I didn't wait long for my to go order, about 10 minutes. The walk back to the hotel was about 5 minutes, but the team at Cleavers wrapped my cheesesteak perfectly! It was still warm by the time I got back to the hotel. There is seating inside the restaurant though on the second level! Cleavers has my favorite cheesesteak. I enjoyed both the cheese whiz and the Cooper American cheese. The steak used was juicy and tender. The sandwich was huge! The Philly cheesesteak restaurants I go to in Vegas don't have seeded rolls, and you can tell the difference! The flavor was just so amazing! If you're local to Philly and craving cheesesteaks, I highly recommend going to Cleavers! The team members are great at the restaurant and the cheesesteaks were amazing!
Stopped by for a quick ONE POUND ribeye cheesesteak, "The Cleaver", from Cleavers while doing a quick day tour of UPenn and my husband's old apartment and this thing converted me. Never in my life did I enjoy a cheesesteak, not that I've had any good ones, until I tried it here. Our interaction with the staff was short since we ordered the sandwich to-go and dipped. They were quick and friendly and we didn't wait too long for the cheesesteak. The inside did look like a nice, casual spot although I can't speak much about it since we didn't dine in. The cheesesteak itself was absolutely loaded with ribeye and cheese--two kinds according to their menu, Cooper American and Kraft cheese whiz. It was so big and rich that the three of us could barely finish this one sandwich--all for under $30!!! What a deal.
Very good cheesesteak. I'm not gonna call it Dalessandro's great. But if you don't want to drive out for that Michelin Bib Gourmand version, which is possibly the best cheesesteak on the planet, this is a great option. Forget Pat's and Gino's both of which long succumbed to the mediocrity of over tourism. The cheesesteak is well prepared and you get a variety of options for toppings. You can do MYO or a variety of packages, in both beef and chicken. I built a basic with sharp provolone and sautéed peppers. It was very good. Service was good, we waited upstairs and then came back down to get the food. They also have a neat "help yourself" beer dispensing system but we didn't try it that evening. There's a few spots to sit. We were generally fine, until a non-customer came in and wanted to use the restroom by where we were seated, then threw up in the trash can, having all the signs and symptoms of suffering from cannabis hyperemesis syndrome. Ambiance is kinda classic diner, with tile floors, and nothing special but decent.
The food came out quickly and me and my husband split the sub because I noticed the sub was huge! We got the Effin Hot Cheesesteak (Spicy) we is exactly what we needed. I've had better subs, but this hit the spot. 2nd floor eating area and bathroom were clean. Note: the self-serve beer wall no longer exists so would recommend the business update the highlights. I was kind of sad to see that it didn't exist here.
I've been to Cleavers several times and the cheesesteaks are always very good. I just discovered they do cheesesteaks in a wrap which is just fantastic. So, I tried one the other day and it's very good. PACKED! Great spot for a cheesesteak if you're by Rittenhouse Square.
Went as we were leaving Philly and this place popped up on Yelp. I got The Cleaver sandwich with peppers and onions, shit was fire. Service was nice as it wasn't too busy inside and we were helped quickly and I appreciate the pagers to let us know when our food was ready.
This was my first official Philly cheesesteak and it did not disappoint . I ordered "the block" and waffle fries through Uber Eats and the food was made so quick and delivered quickly as well. It was still hot and fresh. The meat was tender and there was the perfect amount of peppers/onions/cheese. The sandwich was also HUGE. Overall a great meal and def recommend!
Couldn't visit Philly and pass up a Cheesesteak with the cheese whiz!! First time seeing beer on tap where you were able to "pour your own" very neat idea!
Its quality cheesesteaks here. My friends and I ordered in advance and our large order was ready on time. We got the traditional cheesesteak, Cleaver, Block, Zinger and beef Italiano with a large order of their onion rings. Wow their onion rings are probably the best we've ever had. Thick crunchy texture with an amazing crisp. My order of the Block was delicious and I ate that thing in less than 10 mins. The combination of tender rib eye steak, sharp creamy provolone with the thick bread has just pushed Cleavers for me up the list as one of the top cheesesteak spots in the area. The was plentiful with 1 lb of meat so we definitely had some leftovers with this one. Cheesesteaks here are just super savory and hearty. Very clean packaging and amazing ingredients. We were sad the waffle fries were out, but Ill definitely be back for their other subs as well. The location is right on a busy main road so finding street parking is probably the best. Customer service was great as the large order was 100% accurate and ready for pick up at the desired time. My friends recommended this place and we were so glad we stopped in. read more

We came to this cheesesteak shop as we heard it was the best in town. They offer an a pre order service so when we arrived our cheesesteak was ready. They do an incredible job of blending the meat, provolone, onion all into one unique flavor. I was not a big fan of the seeds on the bun. Cheesesteaks are huge totally share size. read more

When in Philly .... eat a Philly Cheese Steak. That's what I was told so I did. I walked there from my hotel. Placed an order after several minutes trying to decide. Once I got my cheese steak I rushed back to the hotel (I don't eat alone in public). The cheesesteak was very good. I wish I could tell you what I ordered but I did order the most popular one. Cleaver's is a mad scientist dream for food and a spot where I personally "met my match". Pros: - Indulgent menu. The customizing is amazing. You can get borderline anything you want on a cheesesteak. - Portions took me out. So much food it's hard to put it in your mouth - Fair prices and relatively on the cheap side. - Chicken cheesesteak options (as someone who doesn't eat beef) - Waffle fries are next level Cons: - A little too indulgent. I felt like some straight crap after - Pretty tight inside. - Definitely more of a "bar" than a restaurant. This was the "cheesesteak spot" for us in Philadelphia. The options for customizing your cheesesteak makes the place and you can truly get a sandwich your way. So why not a 5? I got the BBQ chicken cheesesteak which was : BBQ sauce, Cheese, Chicken (Fried and chopped), onion rings, and bacon. When I tell you that the '18" or "21" year old in me would be blown away by that combo I'm no playin'. Now the sensible, 31 year old adult I am now - this made me feel like crap for the rest of the night. Fried chicken...bacon....sweet BBQ sauce....Bread....was just a lot to handle for one person. After you eat the first half the sandwich you're pretty much done. The BBQ sauce got a little too sweet after 20-30 constant bites. I would absolutely come back here and maybe get the chicken parm or maybe the Buffalo chicken cheesesteak. The combo I got sounds delicious at first, but once you really think about it/eat it...it's a gut buster...but hey, if that's what you want go for it. To sum it up; indulgence. read more
When in Philadelphia, you're supposed to eat cheesesteak, right? There are a couple more famous places to get this local specialty, but I suspect those places cater to the tourist crowd and I felt that we needed to seek out some place perhaps a little more local. I have no idea whether Cleavers is actually one of those places, but the woman at the hotel front desk claimed to have eaten there recently and recommended it. Taking her at her word, we made the short, convenient stroll to this restaurant from our hotel. Business was light when we arrived, and we decided to go with indoor dining since the whole family was finally inoculated against Covid-19 (with almost zero side effects, I might add). There were just a few socially-distanced tables by the bar, but we were able to get seated right away. We ordered a couple of the basic cheesesteak sandwiches, but in retrospect I wish I had regarded the menu more carefully because for a few bucks more I could have gotten mushrooms, onions, and peppers on the sandwich. I chose a sandwich with Cheez Whiz because I grew up on that stuff and love it. Honestly, the only way that they could have made this experience better would be if they had offered Velveeta as an option. Anyways, the sandwiches were big with easily a half pound or more of thinly cut and shredded and loosely packed beef. They were tasty but IMO could have used a little more cheese. We ordered a couple of salads because we figured we needed something at least a little bit more healthful than the atherosclerosis-inducing sandwiches. These were just okay. The caprese salad was supposed to come with dressing on the side but instead the drowned it in balasamic vinegarette, which was just overpowering. The spinach salad was better though the leaves were a little wilted. Service was fine, though not gushingly friendly. The food came quickly and our water glasses were kept filled. I ordered theCheesesteak Hoagie Sandwich & regular cheesesteak with BBQ Breaded Wings. All of this cost around $70 (including tip $8-$10). The one thing that impressed me was how organized it was. You could go and have a seat and they will announce it, or text you that your order is ready. Theres so much space to seat at. The food was also great. It's pricey but if you find yourself in the city, i highly recommend it. read more
This was my first Philadelphia Philly cheesesteak and maybe I had set my expectations too high, but I just wasn't that happy with what I got. The meat was not very salted and felt quite bland, the peppers and onions made up for it, but what really made me quite sad with the sandwich was that the bread was so dry and cold. Maybe it's because I came a little late at night closer to their closing time, but despite this the restaurant was still really packed so it's not like I was coming into an empty restaurant and making them work when they were about to close. The fries were actually really good and I focused on scarfing those down and reluctantly biting into the cheesesteak in between. The cashiers were pretty uninviting and pretty much just gave a 'what do you want' type of attitude to me. The downstairs was pretty packed along with the outside tables so we went upstairs to sit, overall it was not supre clean, but I'm sure it's because just the sheer volume of people coming in and out all day. I had high hopes for this place as it seemed to have good reviews and high stars, but I felt let down and don't think I'll be back. read more
Awesome Cheesesteak well with the 15 min walk in Center City Philly. The guys in the shop were friendly and helpful to a tourist. The Cheesesteak was meaty and extremely delicious! The choice of cheese and tops were great. I liked the box the hoagie was put in for travel. It was mostly take-out but with the ability to have outside dining tables and chair are available. We came across Cleavers while looking for a good spot for cheesesteaks while we were in town for the weekend. There were a lot of people there for take out, but up the steps you will find a small bar with a few tables to sit down and eat. We ordered at the bar and grabbed our drinks and patiently waited for our food, which we were excited to try. My friends ordered the regular cheesesteak, one with provolone and the other with cheese whiz since that's a must try when in Philly. I got the Effin' hot steak no cheese add mushrooms. We also ordered the waffle fries and onion rings. Note to self the sandwiches are massive, so all the extra sides were wasted. We all barely finished half the sandwich and we were stuffed. If you like spicy, the effin' hot is pretty darn good! We also loved the toasted bread vs it being soggy. My friends preferred the standard provolone over the cheese whiz, but that's just preference. They were glad they tried the cheese whiz tho so they can say they did. Everything comes out in boxes so it's easy to take leftovers. I would definitely come back here when in town. read more

Best Cheesesteak and excellent service! Ordered the cheesesteak, waffle cut fries, and a small vanilla milkshake. Everything taste amazing and made to order. The food is so filling. I doubt most folks can finish a whole cheesesteak hoagie. Just a heads up, finding parking on a weekend is tough but circling for a parking spot or double parking is definitely worth it! read more
Ordered DoorDash after a long day sightseeing-- couldn't manage another trip out! So glad I chose this spot. Excellent quality cheesesteak and very large portions. My husband and I split the "build your own" and a nice quality Cesar salad. Threw in the garlic Parmesan waffle fries for a little added treat. Cleavers may not get the recognition or acclaim of Angelo's but the convenience made up for the fame. read more

I recently moved to Philly and it was only right that I tried a Philly Cheesesteak. After hearing many reviews on this place, I have to say I was so impressed by the quality and size of Cleavers' cheesesteaks. Haven't tried cheesesteaks before? YOURE MISSING OUT! The effin' hot steak was delicious. I'm a fan of the sliced rib eye steak topped with peppers, cheese, and the spicy sauce which all combined to be mouth watery deliciousness. I could only eat half of mine and luckily I shared it with my mom, however if you're absolutely starving then I'm sure one will fill you up. read more

We arrived at Cleaver's around close to noon and was able to be seated right away at the bar area which I believe is the only open dine in option at the moment? We ordered the Pizzaz cheesesteak quickly regretting our choice at our first bite...we came here to get in one of the city's pick on cheesesteak favorites among many others and was not pleased with the Pizzaz; cheese moons were over fired there for leading to a dried up mozz stick and overall dry and flavorless sandwich. We did like the bread and the finely chopped steak so we are looking forward on returning again someday to try the OG Philly cheesesteak. The loaded waffle fries were so yummy!! As well as the cleavers Horchata boozy shake with an extra shot and its was also delicious. Great vibe and music on 2/13/21 we will be back soon to try the OG cheesesteak with another round of loaded waffle fries and a boozy shake! read more

One of the better cheesesteaks I've had in Philly, and probably the best I could find in the downtown area. Although suited more for to-go orders, they do offer limited seating. Tables only for parties 3 or more, or you'll more than like get bar seating. Got there at 5pm on a weekday and it got busy quick. We just got a standard cheesesteak with mild provolone and onions. Not as dry as some other cheesesteaks I had and didn't feel like I was just eating mouthfuls of dense bread. Comfortable to eat and I love how it stayed hot and warm, keeping the cheese melt. But it's still a heavy meal. The waffle fries were fantastic. Well seasoned and quite crispy and actually the highlight. Service was great and friendly! Wouldn't mind coming back. read more

Alright there's Philly cheesesteaks then there's Philly cheesesteaks that place over there does it wrong then there's place like Cleavers that are doing it right in many different ways you decide what ones for you! Coming here was kinda an adventure but very much worth it as the building was boarded up leaving only the sign on the roof and an arrow pointing to the door handle as this location is downtown and due to current situations that's why it's like this. Once inside they have a small little area to eat next to the bar area again they have limited seating because of the world right now either way it was still awesome to eat inside and get this delicious Philly hot right in front of me on this cold rainy day! Of the delicious choices I totally went with the Effin Hot Steak as I love hot peppers and onions on my steak as that's just what's totally good and this cheesesteak was just that a pile of cheesy steak pepper and onion goodness that was huge on a delicious fresh baked bun that just was perfect in soo many ways! Could this be the best of the cheesesteaks I've ever had I totally think yes as it was just super awesome from start to finish as you really couldn't go wrong in anyway! Our server/bartender was awesome she was in top of it and very particular about distancing and the way she went about it which was totally what's good! Overall there really wasn't anything that went down here that wasn't just awesome as my effin hot steak was beyond perfect so much so that I really hope to make it back here again because it's totally just what's good in soo many cheesy ways! read more

I've never had a Philly Cheese Steak before until I came here. Locals recommended this location, so we couldn't go anywhere else..! We ordered an Effin' Hot Steak and The Block (plus some drinks). Things you should know: I. LOCATION It's easy to find if you know how to use Google Maps. II. QUALITY Standard, BUT I'm impressed with the serving size. Ordered the Cleaver Cheesesteak & Cheesesteak Fries, as my first Cheesesteak in Philadelphia, and the Cheesesteak was good not a huge fan of the bread. The Fries were as expected nothing over the top but good none the less. We came in and they asked if we were dining in or taking out, we said in so they directed us upstairs We sat upstairs and scanned the QR code at the table to order, you need to pay on your phone and they call you back downstairs to pick up your food. I expected it to be brought up to our table. So minus one star for service read more

I ordered The cleaver, it was $22 each (which I think it's a little bit overpriced) The meat was just ok. The bread was cold and very chewy even I ate it right away after I got it. Overall, good experience to try maybe I will comeback for other flavors. read more

First time here and I enjoyed the pizazz sub. This is a definite spin on the Philly and it was pretty good. The added mozzarella planks and pizza sauce topped it off. The sub roll was firm enough to hold the sub together and soft enough to still enjoy. Bee was our server and she was great and attentive. Cute place to have a Philly in Philadelphia. read more

I've dreamed of ordering and eating a philly cheesesteak in Philadelphia, and it came true tonight! I loooved how tender and well seasoned the meat was. The sandwich was so juicy and extremely tasty. I got the cheese on the side because I didn't want to be overwhelmed with its flavor and I recommend it for first timers. The onion rings were giant! We really didnt need the order of fries with the onion rings. I'm so glad we split the sandwich. I almost couldn't even finish my half. The drinks we had were the perfect touch to wash it all down during happy hour. Our waitress/bartender was so sweet and wore a faceshield and mask the entire time. Everyone was really spaced out inside while we ate. It felt really safe compared to some places. I wish I could give an extra star because I forgot my purse inside and they pulled it aside for me and waited till I came back to get it. They told me they tried to find me once they realized it but I was too far down the street. Not a lot of places would do that. Tha n you Cleavers! read more
3.5 stars. One does not visit and leave Philly without trying a Philly cheesesteak! I've always found myself making my rounds visiting different cheesesteak spots and happened to stumble upon Cleavers given its proximity to Rittenhouse Square. Between two people, we ordered takeout for: - The Cleaver to-go, which is 1lb ribeye steak with American and cheese whiz - Waffle-cut fries Overall, the cheesesteak was good and ribeye was cooked to perfection. My only gripe was that they were super generous with the whiz (probably a bit too much for my liking). A thick layer was lathered under the meat which made the bread a bit soggy. The waffle cut fries were okay...they tasted a bit stale. The staff was friendly and the bathroom was clean. When I visited, the indoor seating area was closed off for COVID, but it seemed like a cool spot to hang out. I would recommend coming here at least once to try it if you're near the area. read more

The regular Cheesesteak has 8oz of meat and one type of cheese. Our Cleaver has 1lb of meat and two types of Cheese!!

There are a lot of people that get “the bowl”. It’s all the stuff just no bread. Tastes just as good!!
How do the cheesesteaks here compare to Max's, Tony Luke's, Daleassandro's, Jim's and Sonny's?
To each his own. But high quality ingredients at Cleavers + an amazing roll = best cheese steak I've ever had.
