Cleavers threw out my sandwich order, and they had no processes in place to fix the situation. We walked in around 1:15 p.m. on the Sunday after Thanksgiving and ordered two chicken cutlet sandwiches. One came out very quickly, and the other one was delayed. During that time, another girl picked up her order, and then because the upstairs was so full (because the manager told everyone to go wait upstairs for their order), it took her a while to find a seat and discover she had the wrong sandwich. She then came back downstairs and told the staff that she had the wrong sandwich, and the staff literally just threw the sandwich away. That sandwich was my sandwich. I went up to the staff and let them know that I was pretty sure that the sandwich they had just thrown away was my sandwich. A staff member went into the trashcan and visually confirmed it was my sandwich. They said they were unable to make a new sandwich or issue a refund for a sandwich that I clearly had not received, because their manager had stepped out to go shopping. During his shift. They also did not have a way to contact him to let him know that there was an issue, apparently. So we had to wait for him to come back, and then wait for the order to be remade. By the time we left with our takeout sandwiches, we had spent over 40 minutes at Cleavers. It is unacceptable that after almost a decade of being open, Cleavers has no staff training process in place for fixing errors. I also received no apology from the manager, and only an insincere apology ("apologies", said with sarcasm) from the staff, for something that was clearly their mistake. Cleavers is littered with signs stating that they won't issue refunds or remake orders if it was the customer's error, but they apparently never bothered to figure out what to do when they make a mistake. A place that treats its customers so poorly is not a place that I want to patronize. read more

Cleavers has come recommended by many as their favorite spot to grab a cheesesteak. After my first visit last week, I can see why so many love it here! The food is great, well priced, and you can actually sit down inside and grab a drink. My boyfriend and I stopped by last week after a long and tiring day of transporting heavy boxes around town. Of course, this exhausting labor left us hungry and in no mood to cook. We decided to walk over to Cleavers. At around 6:30 on a Thursday night, were easily able to grab two seats at the bar. The bartender handed us menus and then took a little while dealing with all of the other tables and bar guests in the room. We put our order in, we decided to share a cheesesteak with sharp provolone, the mozzarella moons, and the loaded fries. I am glad we opted to share a cheesesteak instead of getting one for each of us because wow are the portions huge! Being the meat eater that hubs is, he set out to get his Cheesesteak no matter what during our Philly trip. For the Veggie, you still pick your cheese like you would with the traditional cheesesteak sandwich and any other veggies so settled for tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. As far as cheesesteaks go in Center City, this place was decent, but not great. I tried my luck with some of the fancier cheesesteaks, which didn't live up to my expectations, but certainly willing to try this place again and order the regular cheesesteak. In terms of seating, there's a decent space upstairs that can fit maybe 15 people or so. We sat outside where they have a number of tables available as well. Certainly more seating than the average cheesesteak joint. Beef Italiano - A solid attempt, but the spinach totally overpowers the cheesesteak. When you look past that (or embrace it), it's not bad at all. Like the Block, the bread on this cheesesteak is top quality, the meat is flavorful, and the cheese is plentiful. The Block - This one is like the Italiano, but more enjoyable as it doesn't have spinach. Again, good quality ingredients executed fairly well. Garlic Parmesan Fries - While the garlic flavoring (likely garlic powder) was prominent, these fries didn't quite live up to comparable fries. With waffle fries, these already have a leg-up in my opinion in terms of fry shape, but they didn't hit the mark for $8 fries. Similar fries I've ordered would toss the fries in a bowl with actual garlic and powdered parmesan (rather than shreds) to integrate the flavors more effectively -- skip. Upon arrival there was roughly 10 people waiting outside and the tables they had were all full. You can easily order inside with a kiosk and it was a well laid out menu and process. The enormous sandos were each served in a sturdy, cardboard takeout box. It's a good cheesesteak. It's even a very good cheesesteak. But it's not a great one. It's the roll. Cacia's bakery provides them. It's a good seeded roll but it falls apart easily. It doesn't hold the contents well. And it comes across a little on the soft side in texture although it has a good crust. The roll is so key in these sandwiches.
