If you go early, get a window stool, have a few, get some nachos or a burger. It is kind of fun. The staff can be very friendly. I get out before dark so I have no clue what the rest of you will go through during rush hours. -update-September- -Beer was just OK. The Blue Moon Pumpkin had zero pumpkin flavor. Is it because it's stale? Maybe. The waitress was kind of sour, but the crappy music was so too loud I don't blame her for acting weird. I hate sitting on those low stools. A group of friends and I stopped here on the 4th of July on our way to the river to see the fireworks. This was my first time here as it was suggested by someone in our group to stop in. It was pretty empty (it was about 6pm). We sat in the back room. There were a few plasmas on the walls that had various baseball games on (not high def tho?!). Here is what I thought of this experience: -Service: Not bad. A little sluggish for how dead the place was, but it was ok since we were in no rush. -Food quality: Average to below average. We had drinks and appetizers. They were the standard bar fare, but not very tasty. -Atmosphere: It was a cool looking place with alot of dark wood. comfortable chairs. Bathrooms were not the cleanest and smelled not-so-nice. The music was not super loud so we were able to hold conversations. 3 stars because it was just an OK place. We were starting our night off right when we walked into this place. The first thing that caught our eye was the fireplace, lounge seats and amazing staff. The food itself was not bad either. When I went to this place they had their St. Patrick's Day menu out but we declined to eat that food due to having it earlier in the day. So I decided to go with the fried buffalo chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. First of all, let me tell you this - those fries were the single best sweet potato fries I have ever had. This is why this restaurant received four stars from me instead of three. We had an amazing waitress, Lauren, whom we nicknamed Strawberry. She took our banter like a pro and even suggested a couple of bars that we could go pub crawling to. It was because of her that the place received four stars. Stopped in on a Saturday nite around 9pm. It's a young, unpretentious but hip crowd.. Went to the bar (in back on Columbus street side), for a quick beer and to watch the Sox. Beer selection is average. Draft Basics: Guinness, Stella, Sam Adams, a couple of IPAs, and a Belgian. I was in the the mood for a good Pilsner. Only Choices were bud light and Coors light. Tried some food. Half dozen oysters for starters, followed by the fish tacos. Asked for them to NOT come out together. They both arrived at the same time. Had to fight the oysters to get them off the shell but were otherwise tasty. Skipped the shrimp cocktail sauce masquerading as 'mignonette'. The fish tacos were simple, decent size but nothing to write home about. Asked for the avocado yogurt sauce on the side. You can probably guess where it landed: smack dab (pun intended) on the bottom. Pico de gallo salsa was just 'OK'. Come here to hang out with friends who perhaps are more interested in socializing than the culinary aspects of the restaurant. read more

The only bar I know that has an identity crisis, but that does help it cater to a diverse group. Upstairs has a nice lounge that will flood with Hancock and Pru employees any night of the week. It also has a solid bar area that was recently renovated, but one short trip downstairs and you are in a basement night club. The music is usually solid and it's dark enough to not care who's grinding up on you so you know you are in for a good time. Hint: On popular nights the downstairs will pack up quickly after opening. When you see the lounge/bar emptying head downstairs or you'll be waiting in line to get down. read more

This bar sucks. First there is a huge line outside if you don't get there early enough, then once you're inside they make you wait in ANOTHER line to get downstairs to the dance floor. Last time I was there I got there early enough to not wait in line to get downstairs, only to have the downstairs closed while I was there because a couple fights broke out. Fine, so when I go upstairs someone rips my overpriced beer out of my hand and says I have to leave despite not having anything to do with the fights. read more

I have never been one to review a place but I finally have found the need to. A group of my coworkers and I headed to Clery's to host a goodbye dinner for one of my coworkers. We were a table of 12 so automatically the waitress gets a pretty decent tip. I guess that explains the bad service and the long wait to get food and drinks(drinks that were watered down and shots that came in tiny plastic cups). Normally, the ambience at Clery's is that it is chill and it's loud. But apparently, the manager had to come over and tell us to be quiet because we are not at a bar but at restaurant so we should behave as such and that we caused a group to leave even though you normally can't hear anybody else while dining at Clery's. I definitely would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

I'm really upset with the way that clerys bouncers handle customers. I was handed pornographic cards by a customer of the bar, and usually, you are protected by the bouncers and they assure that everyone feels welcome. However, when I reported this to a bouncer, he told me to "leave it alone" because "everyone is an adult here" rather than trying to get to the bottom of it or trying in any way to make me feel safe. The layout of this place is really nice. It's nice to have the option between standard bar setting upstairs and dance floor with a DJ downstairs on the weekends. The staff was generally pretty rude. The music is also so awful. I just don't understand how places could possibly think people really want to hear the same 90s alternative music every weekend of their lives... read more

I went to Clery's on a Friday night last week. I was with 3 of my good friends from Southie. We were going there to meet a group of 10-15 people for a birthday party celebration. We walked in and there was no problem with a line (around 9:45pm). I think the line started sometime around 10:15pm. Getting a drink was not a problem but the bartenders seemed more tense than cool. They needed to lighten up a bit. A few of us went to the back of Clery's and sat in a booth for a stiff vodka water and we looked around at people trying to scope out the scene. Everyone seemed to be doing there own thing upstairs. Not much action. No cover was huge. But the upstairs seemed a bit too crowded at times. I had a blast - I had to go the next morning to get my debit card from the bar though. The blonde girl working the next morning wasn't bad looking so I didn't mind haha. Anyways - I would suggest going to Clery's if you're looking for loud music and not a lot of talking to strangers. If you have a good group it will be a fun night. Not the location though because it's the only bar within 3 blocks. I go here for lunch a lot too. Food is good but small portions. read more

Location. Location. Location. That would be the main reason why I head to Clery's. It's in a great spot, which attributes to it being such a good default bar to go to. I would say it has a good after work crowd on Thurs and Fri nights. I've eaten here a few times, but can't really say any of the food sticks out....after a few beers in me, I thought the chicken fingers were amazing. The most negative I can say about Clery's is that the womens bathroom is consistently disgusting. It's always a mess and most times at least one of the locks is missing on the bathroom stall doors. Clerys is my favorite place to head on a weekend. It has a young professional crowd without the high cover charge of heading to a bar near Government Center. The dance floor on Fridays and Saturdays can get a little rowdy and college-like, but does not disappoint. Get there early or you will be standing in line outside and then again to go into the basement. read more

The review pertains to the ladies bathroom. Be careful ladies! The door locks slide into the wall but they don't stop the door from opening. and the doors go down to the floor so you can't see there's anyone inside. I know you can knock, but people don't. Someone opened the door on me, surprise! Then that same woman had someone open the door on her. The toilet water was leaking everywhere and got worse when flushed. The toilet paper holder was not actually possible to use. It wasn't connected to the wall enough to get leverage to pull, especially when I had two bags on my lap, because the floor was covered in toilet water. The lid on it was broken so a lever would fall down and stop the paper, then the whole thing would slide down the wall. If you want to save your sanity, your shoes, and your nether regions, go somewhere else. Trivia was fun, but it's really loud in there. read more

I walked in for a burger and a beer at about 1:30pm today. The bartender, female, was rude and unwelcoming. I am a regular in the bar/restaurant in the early evening hours and have never been treated like this here. Truly would give zero stars if I could. My friend, aged 24, had an out of state ID. Both bouncers wrongly accused her of having a fake ID. She offered alternate forms of identification, and we suggested scanning her ID, having a manager verify the ID, or even having the police verify the ID. They declined all options, and continued to falsely accuse her of having a fake ID. This was absurd, and incredibly unprofessional. My friends and I will not be returning to this bar, and will be informing our friends of the unprofessional service we received. read more

Went here yesterday to meet up for after work drinks. We tried four of the signature cocktails. All were great choices (can't remember the drink names off the top of my head, but we didn't try a bad one). Drinks were reasonably priced. Came here for dinner before a concert. Very loud and noisy. We did get moved to a different table which was a little bit quieter. Decent beers. We had the homemade tots and a white pizza. Tots were basically fried mashed potato balls. We paid $11 and got about 11 tots. So...a dollar per tot! They were tasty, but even for Boston, that seems over-priced. White pizza was hot, crust was good but it could have used some spice and was a bit greasy. Wait staff was attentive. I'd choose a different place next time. read more

Clery's is the place to be if you want to get rubbed up on by some investment bankers on the basement's seemingly make-shift, suspiciously sticky dancefloor. Upstairs is nice and maybe even classy. Perhaps it's the kind of place to which the sunshine lends a little character. I found Clery's to be a pretty forgettable place. I went here with a group of friends for a birthday on a Saturday night for post dinner drinks. We found a table by the bar and were having a good time until the music was turned up, and up... and up - to the point where we were yelling at each other. It would have been more tolerable if the speakers hadn't been blown out. All I could hear was the blasting static base. At least there was a hand-painted dove mural above the bar I could stare at - rather than talking with my friends. A friend of ours was arriving separately and was forced to wait out in the cold because there was a 45 minute wait to get in. Luckily a talk with the manager allowed them to sneak in the back door. I'm not sure why so many were willing to brave waiting in the snow. Later on we decided to attempt a move downstairs to where there is a dance floor, only to find that there was a 30 minute line to get downstairs. When we finally made it downstairs around 1am the lights were turned on and the music ended. I was glad - the basement was an odd environment. It felt like I had just entered the neighbors living room, complete with bookcases against the wall and two huge TVs with the news on. As others have mentioned the clientele is a mix of young suits and suburban types. I was surprised by the number of guys in full suits and ties on a Saturday night. Overall, Cleary's seemed to be feeding of hype and those who follow hype. After visiting it's unclear where that hype comes from, certainly not the dance floor, or the sound system. For those of you that end up waiting in lines for this place - pass, there are far better places nearby. read more

This might be the place to go to for a drink after work. They have a fair beer selection. But, the food is another thing. Food order did not come out as expected. Checkin was when other were finishing their meal. While I did eat the fries and a few bites of the sandwich after saying something to the server/bartender nothing was done to correct it. The beers are not any great deal for the area. Expected more based on the ambiance/setup of the bar/restaurant. With all the other options will probably try others.....Bartenders were not overly attentive even for what was probably a slow night for them.... read more

There is no cover here and the DJ does a decent job on Friday nights. However, when I went there with some friends yesterday we were made pretty uncomfortable by one of the bouncers. Usually security staff members are my friends. They are there to make sure everyone is safe. If someone at the bar is giving me a hard time I always feel like I can talk to a bouncer about it. Last night, my friends and I were downstairs dancing and a bouncer was taking photos of us without our consent. Phone pointed, flash on, camera set to burst. It does not look like Clerys would be using these for promotion, so I assume the photos were for his own personal use, which is extremely inappropriate. read more

I have many fond memories at Clery's including the buffalo chicken pizza. I same back for lunch with a co-worker last week. We were seated quickly. We both were craving soup as it was really cold out. I had the chili and my co-worker had the beef stew. The soups were feeling. sometimes you go to a place, don't like it, and then never go back and never think about it again. clery's, unfortunately, is not that kind of place, as it keeps coming up as a potential destination. thus i am forced to pan it. is it the great location? is it the pastiche of styles, where every thing is just a little represented? is it that my friends are just frat-boy d-bags and dance floor-lovin' party girls? i hope not the latter....and yet i keep hearing, "hey, a bunch of us are going to clery's tonight. wanna come?" NO. there is a touch of yuppie-fancy fittings. there is a good-looking bar. the menu appears to contain better-than-pub-grub. TVs indicate a nice place to catch a game. but really, this is a gigantic frat party. i suppose the other stuff is just to make the frat boys feel like they are a little grown up. they are not. the clientele is unctuous, and simultaneously overeager. the music is too loud, and apparently from a 2003 house party mix CD. the beer comes from several fancy-name taps, but it all tastes like stale bud lite. i have never stayed long enough to order food. i was there last night, because my buddy (who drove) called an audible and stopped in to meet some friends who'd said, "hey, a bunch of us are going to clery's tonight. wanna come?" and he took the bait. my GF and I walked out after 20 mins, not even ordering a drink. Sometimes it is ok to compromise your desires for your friends'. but not if it involves this joint. read more

This has the potential to be a great bustling amazing location. But they have completely screwed it up. I cannot comment on the food, so perhaps it is delicious. However what I can review is the fact that the bar was NOWHERE near capacity, and yet the bouncer had people waiting out in the cold, letting girls come in who BRIBED their way in (physically handing him money), and then he talked shit at people in the crowd. Whatever, a wait in a line that is longer than most superior venues for drinking and dancing; it's not the worst thing in the world. However, this is the only nightlife location I have EVER been to in this state, this country, or the other countries I've visited, is another line right after that which moves even SLOWER! to get into the downstairs dancing area (the only reason I go out). If I wanted to wait in ludicrous lines all day that never moved all the way until closing then I would go to DisneyWorld. Anyway, I NEVER made it to the dance floor in the course of 2 and a half hours, and after talking with many other patrons found out that they concurred with my attitudes towards this establishment. I wish I didn't end up a clery's as much as I do. It's quite fratastic, especially the dance floor downstairs, with more back bay and beacon hill residents than south enders, it seems. However, you always know what to expect (crowded, well drinks, no? tourists), so it ends up being a destination quite frequently. So many of the other area bars are crappy (Boyleston street) or restuarant-y (delux, rouge), that there aren't really other options. Sigh. read more

Three stars? Are we reviewing the same place? hmmm...this place was exactly what I would expect. Its a true neighborhood pub. The service was 4 star worthy. We stopped in here on a Friday evening, it was really busy due to holiday parties. We managed to grab two seats at the bar immediately. Clerys is one of those bars that everyone in a group can agree on. While not offering anything special or spectacular, it aims to satisfy everyone's peculiarities and peeves and I have successfully dragged large mixed groups here from snooty princesses to anything-remotely-fancy-avoiders. The place is very large but it gets packed and the couches/tables/chairs/bar area get packed quickly. They have some amazing waitstaff..one waitress kept track of all our drink orders in a group of over a dozen and then presented seperate bills without anyone having to ask. Thanks! read more

Any bar that has a line of people looping around the corner at 10pm when there is plenty of room inside falls into the "lame" category in my book, and even stronger indication of the pathetic nightlife in this city. (I've lived in NYC, DC, and Vegas, and never have I seen a line to get into a BAR.) Pathetic. read more

A line to get in, a line to get downstairs to the dance floor, a line for the bar. Everyone looks the same and seems to just be looking around at other people there. The music is a DJ "spinning" Top 40, nothing fancy or interesting. I only went here for "nightlife" but I can't imagine it being a great dining experience either. read more
