I've been going to Cliff's on occasion for many years now. Just note that seating for parties of more than two is quite limited so try to come at non-peak times if you are a party of three or more. What I noticed today is that the pricing has increased dramatically ($3.50 for a cup of coffee and today, at least, we drained our cups to the bottom and had to ask the waitress for more!) But what I really found to be the reason for my review was that the breakfasts were only served with a single piece of toast. When I asked about it, I was told that bread was expensive. The waitress said she could bring me another piece at extra cost (menu listed it as $2). Huh? Granted there has been some inflation, but $2 for a single piece of toast? Finally, the bill came (which I usually don't examine but did so this time because of the toast) and the bill had written on it $53.50 total after taxes. But the register tape had $55. I didn't ask about this discrepancy but could they be charging extra for credit card payments? Anyway, this visit the waitress was not attentive at all and the pricing/portion was unimpressive. I usually tip 20% or more but not this time. I won't say that I will never go back, but I will certainly seek other places to meet friends and family before considering Cliffs again. Sorry guys. Penny wise pound foolish. If bread really is $2 a slice, it might be better to hide the cost in the overall meal cost and serve two pieces. That is less noticeable. read more

After driving by a number of times I had to stop in and get some breakfast. It was hopping which is typically a good indicator. My husband and I each got different meals and the food was good. Particularly amazing was the Portuguese sweet bread French toast. Don't fool yourself you want to pick that option! We enjoyed the basics too and found everything to be great quality. Lots of table envy was present as patrons looked to others to see what they should get making the decision hard! I would go back and enjoy another meal there and particularly I would like to try some of their lunch items. Service was quick and food was really good which would normally earn a 5 star review however in the most odd of odd complaints the chairs inside were so uncomfortable and left bruises on our legs because where the arms meet the seat they are so narrow. Maybe that's a testament to our leg sizes but we are average and work out reasonably so we were surprise at our discomfort. read more

The place has changed in the last couple years. The inside had some updates and looked good. It was clean and had better decor than the old "diner" feel it used to have, but I was not impressed with my omelette and probably won't return. I ordered and ham, cheese and spinach omelette and it was swimming in spinach juice! Kind of like, whoever made it took COOKED spinach and threw it in without even giving in a second to drain it! So gross. The egg part of the omelette was paper thin and the ham was minced and super fatty. We went at lunch time, and were told we couldn't sit on the porch on a gorgeous day. My friend got chicken quesadillas and there were only 3 pieces. The total was 24 bucks! I didnt get toast, or home fries and all he got was 3 lousy chicken quesadillas. Definitely not worth the price. As far as the quality? Who knows, maybe it was just the cook that day. To top it all off, I got a whopping stomachache about 2 hours after I ate. Pre-COVID, Cliffs used to be my go-to place for breakfast, but now I will just keep going. I hear Marcus Ps is pretty good! read more

What restaurant doesn't include Home Fries with Breakfast?......REALLY??? We went to Cliff's Cafe for Sunday breakfast. As we each ordered eggs or omelettes we were asked by the waitress "Would you like homefries? They are not included." Taken a bit aback I asked, "I'm sorry but you don't not get any potatoes with eggs, bacon and toast?" and she replied "That's right." So I ordered 2 eggs Over Easy with Bacon and the 5-grain toast they offered and also the side dish of homefries at $1.99 and was asked if I wanted them with onions and I said "sure". I am a retired truck driver and have traveled millions of miles and been to THOUSANDS of diners in the U.S. and Canada. Every single one offers a side besides your eggs, meat and toast. Depending on where you are you may be offered home fries, hash browns, grits or a choice of either and in Canada baked beans are also a choice. I personally rate diners on two specific meals. Bacon & Eggs Breakfast and a Burger & Fries lunch or dinner. I believe you should be able to roll into any town and find a place to enjoy one of these comfort meals no matter which State or Province you are in. Diners that offer breakfast "all day" or at least while they are open get Bonus Points. Besides eating in diners for decades I was a short order cook in a few all-night diners and can sling hash with the best of them. My breakfast arrived and the eggs looked large with an abundance of egg white. In my opinion Over Easy eggs should have firm whites and the maximum amount of liquid yolk without any runniness in the whites. These were closer to Over Medium as each egg only yielded about a teaspoon of yolk to be mopped up with my toast. The 5 grain sounded like a nice option but one slice was overcooked and crunchy. The bacon was by FAR the star of the meal and had a nice thickness, color, crispness and flavor and if I had just gone in to eat bacon Cliff's would have gotten 5 stars and the coffee was pretty good too. The homefries came in a side dish. They were made with Red Bliss potatoes and had a 2-3 tablespoon pile of sauteed onions piled on top. They were small cut, 1/2" to 3/4" cubes. They were over boiled in the parboil. Only 20-30% had any crisp on them, and if I hadn't gotten the onions on them they would have been bland as they were under seasoned. They would have been disappointing if included in the meal but charging $1.99 for 6 1/2 cents of poorly cooked potatoes is thievery. As we prepared to leave I pulled one of the waitresses aside and explained that I would be giving them a positive review but that not including homefries with breakfast was unacceptable and she said, "Will you PLEASE go tell that to the owner?". This led me to believe that other customers have had this issue and that the owner is unreceptive to the input of his staff who were all helpful and courteous and more importantly to his customers. I approached the owner and explained that my breakfast wasn't bad but that I was put off that they charged $2 for a side that is included in 99.99999% of diner breakfasts. He seemed a bit put out that I would make such a comment and said in a dismissive tone, "Well that's how I've been doing it for years.". I told him that may be true but that it would affect any online review I may write online, to which he rudely said to me "Yeah...Whatever!" His attitude showed his true colors and his approach to his customers, his staff and most importantly to his food. I hope that even if he never includes a side dish with his breakfasts that at least he figures out how NOT to alienate customers because whenever the subject of dining in Townsend MA comes up I will be telling people to "Steer clear of Cliff's Cafe...Not only do they not include homefries with their breakfasts but the owner acts like a rude jerk." read more

Dec 2017. Came here with a good friend and her son catch up. She's been here but I've never been. Cute little place and very welcoming. I had an omelette with hearty healthy toast, her son had a hot dog, and my friend had a slice of French toast and the bagel breakfast sandwich. Next time I'll get the French toast. Smelled so good. Cliff's Cafe is, as the other reviews indicated, your average small-town diner. The location itself is small and unassuming, but the service is always fast and friendly. There are a few standouts on the menu - their french toast made with Portuguese sweet bread is delicious, as are their home fries and all of their breakfast sandwiches. Their pancakes are ENORMOUS, unless you have a huge appetite there's no way you're eating more than one. My personal favorite is a coffee roll french toast, a frequent special that I always order when available. Cliff's always manages to draw me back in with its great prices, good food, and reliable service. I've been there countless times and I've never once had a subpar meal or bad experience. read more

Usually like it here but the last 3 weeks I've tried to call to order and pick food up and the phone gets picked up but no one says hello or anything all I hear is all the workers talking to eachother. Today I called they picked up and I said hello and got nothing, stayed on the phone for 6 minutes just listening and kept saying hello hopefully someone will hear me. I go here for breakfast with some of my friends and we always have a good meal. It is a typically local diner with good but basic selections. The prices are cheap and the portions are good. For breakfast they offer the usual suspects which are all good, but certainly not amazing. The one thing I really like is the toast they make with Portuguese sweet bread. It has a great flavor and goes really well with the fried eggs and bacon. For lunch the sandwiches are good and they always have a list of board specials that change every couple of days. I'll try to keep it short. Cliffs is pretty basic. Basic breakfasts and lunches, though the fish and chips is pretty good and probably the one thing you couldn't make at home yourself, or least wouldn't want to. We've been going to Cliff's for years, and now know what to expect. Basically we go if we want breakfast and don't feel like cooking it ourselves. Its not fancy. They charge extra for onions on your home fries, and they don't tell you, but they sure ask you. Actually, all the extras you end up with really add up here, so just be careful. They are super busy on weekends, like any breakfast place. They are very friendly here though, they keep the coffee coming, and the place is always clean. read more

I am never in this neck of the woods but I was out and about doing some volunteer work and drove past this place at lunchtime on a Sunday. I parked nearby and walked over. It's a local diner-style place. There is a counter with about 8 seats and a separate dining room off to the left. The menu is diner-style stuff too; omelets and club sandwiches, etc. The bar area was full of young kids, but they soon all left so I took a seat at the counter. Other reviews say the service was slow, but, it wasn't too bad. I ordered a club sandwich but the waitress said they don't do lunch items on Sunday, just breakfast all day. That is like never a problem for me, because I love breakfast for lunch and nearly ordered it anyhow! I got steak and eggs - with the eggs poached. Some other review mentioned that and I recommend it too. The steak isn't super large, but it has a lot of cracked pepper grilled into it and it was cooked perfectly. The poached eggs were awesome and great for dipping my toast. The hash browns were super tasty too. The steak was a little grisly, which is typical for a breakfast steak. Still, I really liked it. The portion size was ok; I mean I felt I could have eaten another whole plate, but really it was a perfect size for breakfast. The steak and eggs and a diet coke will run you about twenty bucks - kinda pricy but hey I ordered steak and not like pancakes. Speaking of which, 2 of the boys that worked there had some kind of eating competition going on at the counter, which was a little weird. But if what I saw is what they serve for pancakes it's crazy - 3 thick pancakes the size of the plate stacked high! Whoa! So, maybe next time I stick to pancakes. Best service in town and the portions are crazy. Salads are super fresh and amazing with some chicken on top! Definitely stop in and ask what the specials are... things like BBQ shaved steak bomb quesadillas and their awesome homemade turkey salad! If you get a sandwich, don't get white bread; try your sandwich on one of the cool breads they have like sourdough, hemp, Portuguese, etc. We can't help eating here all the time! read more

Cliff's is a great breakfast spot. Sitting right in the center of Townsend, with big windows and outside seating, it is a great spot to get the weekend started right. The Food is good quality, never had a bad meal there. Only negative I can think of is, if you like your eggs over easy and runny as I do, they are not the best quality organic eggs or farm fresh so they have a funny taste. pancakes are MASSIVE, and cheap! 3 pancakes is literally enough to feed 2 grown men! Big Breakfast is like $8 or $9 and keeps me full till dinner time! (and Im a 265lb man!) Staff is fast, friendly and efficient. ALWAYS specials up, so thats where I really am impressed... grab a burger with a fried egg and spinach on top.. or a portuguese sweet bread french toast, etc. No other place in the area has these sort of whimsical specials available... daily!
