Climbing Bines was one of seven breweries we visited on our recent trip to the FLX region, specifically Seneca Lake. To be consistent with my rating scale I really had to think hard about this one because there are quite a few good breweries right around Watkins Glen. When I asked myself if I'd be willing to drive 30 minutes to bypass a couple of other breweries to get there the answer was yes - depending on the weather. The tap room has the earthy feel that I find comfortable, it has a really nice outdoor seating areas, and its super dog friendly. Although there are some better beers close by, Climbing Bines gets bonus points from me for the ambiance and scenery. It really is a relaxing and aesthetically pleasing place. Don't get me wrong, the beers are OK, but I'd mostly drive a bit to hang out there for an evening if it's sunny and if there's a food truck. My rating scale: 1 - Just don't 2 - You'll survive, but there are better choices close by 3 - Good choice if you're in the area 4 - I'd drive 30 minutes out of my way just to come here 5 - I'd try to convince my wife to drive an hour just to come here read more

On our Seneca Lake brewery tour (July 14), we didn't stop at the new Climbing Bines tasting room in Geneva, NY, but instead stopped at the Hop Farm. I always like this location! It is big with lots of outdoor space. It has two event spaces (one enclosed) and often has food trucks. The website recommends bringing chairs on the weekend, because they have more space than seating. One thing to note about the beers is that some are made with ingredients from other farms. On the menu, those are marked as "Pando" (I don't remember what that stands for). Wineries in the Finger Lakes region have wine trail markers. I hope the breweries will advocate for something similar. Those markers could help more people discover the growing number of breweries in the Finger Lakes. read more

This brewery was recommended to me by my brother and it was my favorite place on a weekend of multiple stops. Everything is a bit different under the covid rules. Walking up a mask is required by all, you wait at the door with your group until waved in by a friendly worker. Place your order and take it back out and find a seat. I ordered a flight four generous pours for $six bucks ( have to get a bag of chips too) Nys rule :) The beers I enjoyed, IPA 6.1 super tasty, Double IPA 7.8 amazing! Pale ale at 4 perfect smooth summer drink. Hefeweizen at 5.2was good too but next time I would just go with one of the IPA's. Also, had a taste of the ship wrecked ( served in cans) another great beer. The views are awesome here, wide open area looking at their hops all growing up the vines/wires. Lots of picnic tables scattered throughout, most with umbrellas to help block the sun. Also,a few hammocks if you need a rest. Definitely would come back here. read more

We visited Climbing Bines yesterday as our first stop on our self-guided brewery tour. The view of the farm is pretty majestic. The bartenders were super nice and helpful. Many of my friends went with beer flights; I opted for a single amber brew which was enjoyable but didn't knock my socks off. I got to sample their cider with a caramel/cinnamon sugar rim and that was fantastic! I'm not generally a cider person but that was impressive! The sugar from the rim balanced out the tartness of the brew. It was great! They have tons of options for snacks as mandated by New York law. I got the cider donuts which were good! I would have preferred them slightly warmer though. The setup for Climbing Bines is an Indoor lodge with an open-back to enjoy the view into the farm. Thankfully they had a handful of heaters yesterday to keep the patrons warm; including two badass heat cannons that literally made waves in the air! The outdoor area is perfect for photo ops. I had a pleasant experience at Climbing Bines and would return. read more

Arriving on the Seneca Lake wine/beer/cheese trail late in the day, I had enough time for only two winery visits before everything began closing up. Luckily, someone mentioned that Climbing Bines, a craft ale company, was hosting an event and staying open late so as everyplace else locked up I headed here. Climbing Bines has a big, beautiful property and makes good use of it. The ample dirt/lawn parking area was being well-managed with staff directing guests where to park. A big, rustic open barn sort of building provides plenty of space from which to enjoy your flight ($6 for 4, larger flights available as well). The "craft ale" is tasty and enjoying it in this environment seems fitting. If you're a game enthusiast I could see bringing one with you, setting up at these long picnic tables and making an afternoon of it, at least in the summer weather. On this visit, a short distance from the main tasting area, they had a band, a handful of vendors hawking their wares (including spirits), and a smaller, enclosed tasting space where they were also selling logo merchandise (they have a cool logo). Generally open only until 6 p.m., Climbing Bines seems like a good place to head if you're a) more into beer than wine b) desire more roomy, less crowded surroundings than most tasting rooms offer and c) looking for a relaxing place to close out your day of tastings. It's so spacious, pleasant, and airy here that you might be loathe to get back in your car and head to yet another crowded tasting room. Staying at Climbing Bines wouldn't be a bad decision at all. read more

While I'm not an avid lover of their beer, I do always manage to find at least one beer that I can enjoy. I think over the years, I come back because I love the vibe. The staff is always friendly, knowledgeable about the beer, and willing to answer any questions you have. It was cold this time around, but I find sitting in the sun, enjoying a crisp beverage, admiring the hops (when in season), and being blessed by my company so relaxing. read more

The server was nice but could not operate the wood burner appropriately, so the place was filled with smoke. The beer was delicious, though. We did a flight. The only terrible one was the gluten-free option. The Amber was a super well-balanced, perfect mid-strength beer. We scored a growler of that to take back to our little lakeside cabin. 1 extra star for them trying their best to fix the smokiness. read more

Beer was good as have likely something for every taste. They have about 10 beers on tap plus a few local wines. I do not think they have any food. I can't rate the brewery; we went there for lunch at the food truck off the patio area. They seem to specialize in tater tots and BBQ. Two in our party are gluten free so they had the pulled pork special in a corn tortilla with coleslaw on the side and a drink. Neither had a gluten reaction so we heartedly approve. I had a pulled pork sandwich special with a side of tots and a drink. The price was very reasonable, the serving was huge, and it all tasted great. The tots were unusually crispy and I liked them a lot. Another in our party had tots smothered with I don't know what, but it looked really good. I noticed a mention of compostable to-go containers (small upcharge) and they collect bottles and cans separately from the trash. I can't say it was extensive but there seemed to be some concern for sustainability. Yes, I am a fan and recommend this spot for an inexpensive, filling, and delicious casual lunch. read more

Stopped by last Saturday afternoon and I have to say - what an awesome outdoor place to hangout and relax with some drinks! It's so hard to choose which breweries to go to along the Finger Lakes when you have limited time, and I'm so glad my boyfriend and I chose this one. Great beer, and I was even able to try their limited edition "Pandemic" hard seltzer. I'm usually not one for trying breweries' homemade seltzers, but this was amazing! No chemically aftertaste like the mass produced brands. Everyone that served us was very friendly and open to questions. July 19, 2018, Thursday - Noon for a drink 2 adults Atmosphere - 5 stars Drinks - 4 stars Service - 5 stars Background - Touring the west side of Seneca Lake for wines with a few breweries in the mix to keep me happy. Atmosphere - Wow you can not miss this place. Look for the hop farm. Do not trust those wine maps, they are not to scale. Very simple place but functioned well for sampling a handful of beers. Drinks - I had a 4 beer flight. They do their flights differently. First you are given a sheet which a plastic cover on it and given a white board pen. Check the four you want. I picked all IPA and Ivan. Then the server fills one and wipes of the corresponding check. After you finish they take the glass and wash it, and start over. Then you have a souvenir glass when you are done. My wife had a sip of the Honey Apricot which was gluten conscious, it would be gluten free but the environment is not exclusively used for gluten free products so they can not count it as gluten free. Surprisingly that was my favorite beer, thanks honey. Service - Our server was great. It also helps that only one other person was drinking while we were there. The scenery is absolutely magnificent!!!!! So much space and area to run around. Amazing if you have kids or a dog. Perfect. So beautiful. The beer is so refreshing and good. It's been a few years since my last visit and was happy to be able to come back finally. The place is an absolutely 5 star setting with the grounds being gorgeous and the building/patio just being top notch stuff. There's plenty of space to spread out and lawn games to enjoy which is always a great thing to see. The beer is pretty good too, I would say anything is elite level but all the offerings in the two flights we had were good options. The brown ale and the imperial ipa were my favorites of the bunch. Lots of good options for merch too if you're into that sort of thing. All in all it's a great place to stop, enjoy a beer, and take in the setting. read more

Down in Watkins Glen on a Saturday for an event and we passed by Climbing Bines on our drive home. It looked inviting and a nice place to stop in for a drink. There was some kind of private event being held in the pavilion. We had one drink in the tap room and left, service was quick and the employees were helpful. Climbing Bines is a nice addition to the growing "beer trail" in the Finger Lakes. I have been to several craft breweries. The beer at Climbing Bines was not my favorite. However, it was a really cool experience to be up and close to growing hops. The price for the 11 beers and 1 cider was very reasonable. The casual environment with picnic tables would be a great place to enjoy a flight on summer day. In a nutshell, I hope Climbing Bines is representative of the growing beer trail in the area and the grounds alone are worth a stop. read more

This place is awesome for hops and beer lovers alike. First of all, they grow their own hops, and it's extremely noticeable, there are rows and rows of hops - great photo opportunity [noticed?]. When it's nice outside, hanging out on the deck would be a great spot. There are high top tables made of wood slabs, they're beautiful. Lounge chairs to hang out and a few people had their dogs outside with them. Cornhole boards for a friendly game with strangers. The beer tastings are about $6 (?) I can't remember for sure but you get to choose 4. My +1 says they're all delicious and he chose the Emerald Ale to take in a grenade [good for weeks if unopened, but only 48 hours when it's opened]. They sell tons of merch and Frisbees and other knick knacks. There is a "mug club" for the locals, we were told about $250 but maybe you get a GREAT discount and live close so it's worth it. Service is pretty good, the guy was friendly but it got super busy so it was difficult to talk more about the place with him. If you're coming with a large group, call ahead so they can prepare. They didn't have enough menus for them to check off so I know they were a bit flustered, so call ahead! At no other brewery can you get as close up to where beer comes from. Situated in the middle of a hop farm, the small tasting room here inside a barn-like structure offers up some tasty brews. There aren't a huge number of beers available, about 8, but all those tried were quite good. I enjoyed the session IPA a ton as well as the amber ale. For those less interested in the beer, or those who enjoy some activity with their beer, outside is a disk golf course through the hop fields, ladder golf, and corn hole. Take your beer through the hops to see where it came from. It will appreciate the journey. read more

Stopped in on a very cold day this past week as I was stopping by other local breweries. The staff (the owner was not present at the time) were friendly and handling a bus load of people rather well. I had a four beer flight and then finished with a pint of their blonde ale. I did not realize at the time that I was being charged a higher rate because it included a tasting glass and pint glass to take home. I suppose if you are a regular you know to make that distinction prior to ordering. I'm not bothered because I had intended to purchase glassware anyway. The beers were within style guidelines but with their own flair, like their choice of wet hopping an imperial red ale. It was a good choice and I felt that the staff explained why that choice was made and could easily answer questions about the different beers being offered.
