Everything everyone said about this place is true. It is full of urban cougars and their male counterparts. How come there isn't a word for that? Maybe it's the default condition in males. Clink is a cute place with a lot of atmosphere (what does that even mean?) and great food but I am not so sure if it is worth the price tag. My friend and I spent $120 with tips (3 drinks, 2 appetizers, and 1 dinner consists of a very small piece of salmon TOTAL). We are not pulling the kind of cash that would allow us to hang out here with any sort of frequency. I should have been making eyes with somebody with a receding hairline and a deep pocket. Ha! Been to Clink twice and LLLOOOOOOVVVVEEE it! :) If you don't know the Liberty Hotel I recommend you make a trip to check it out. It used to be a jail in Boston-Charles Street Jail. (and they have a fun set up of the history with TVs and images from the jail from its condemned period to today- going to the ladies room behind reception) The hotel has a very modern aesthetic and amazing structure. When you are at reception you have a great view of the balconies that housed the cells and the giant chandeliers they put in place. Check out their website to see it, it is more attractive in person (IMO). So the first time we went was for my bday at the end of 2008 (see other reviews from that trip) and we were there for brunch. Ok the decor is pretty amazing in Clink because it is still authentically a jail. They have the dining space in a L shape around the kitchen, all exposed brick walls and the entry ways to the kitchen/buffet area are iron bars from the jail cells! It is well lit and not dank like you'd imagine (go to their website). We ended up ordering off their a la carte menu as well as buffeting it up... they had french toast in the buffet, which is my breakfast indulgence. They had everything you would want in a buffet-cereal, yogurts, fruits, potatoes, bacon, sausage, waffles, eggs, FRENCH TOAST!! ;) My husband ordered eggs benedict, sweet potato fries and we shared a shrimp cocktail...they weren't your typical food items for buffet menu, they were very modern on the plate and DElicious. And the mimosas rocked...fresh squeezed OJ and Veuve Cliquot champagne... do I need to say more? Doubtful... I want one now. The second time we went was for Mother's Day 2009 for an early (9am) breakfast. Ok I got the French Toast off the menu, no buffet at that time, which came with toasted hazlenuts and fresh whipped cream...TO DIE FOR. As my sides I got bacon and potatoes... I am very traditional I guess. lol But those damn potatoes were so good I still think of them when we go to other breakfast restaurants! On this trip we brought our children, a 3.5yr and 1.5yr...and they had wheat pancakes with cream and berries. The pancakes were HUGE, two on a place and they ate a lot, and still there was plenty for 2 more children! The only bummer was they didn't offer mimosas at the breakfast, too early apparently..damn kids! lol I love this place. Look forward to going back and totally recommend it if you are looking for a place that is in town and doesn't feel like you are in a hotel atmosphere. read more

Food was decent, but not spectacular. The pitchers that you used to serve milk or juice are VERY awkward, I dumped milk all over the place actually! Service is poor. We waited for 5 minutes at the front for a host to greet us. I don't need to be seated immediately, but there should be a presence at the front of the house (learned that from Fabio on Top Chef! :p). Our waiter was absent for most of our meal and then left us waiting close to 20 minutes after we were doing eating. THEN, I attempted to use a gift card and that took another 15 minutes for them to VERIFY (huh?) it! Won't go back for food. Decent place for cocktails though. read more

I would give it a 1 for the dinner but management stepped up and gave us dessert in the house which is why it went from one star to three stars. This place is pricey so the food better be good. My friend and I ordered the burgers and she got hers with sweet potato fries and I got mine with regular fries. I couldn't finish my meal. We both agreed that the meat had zero flavor. It was bland and lacked salt, pepper and seasoning! They could have added caramelized onions or cane up with an aioli or tomato jam or something that would justify this price tag if $21. The fries were gross.They tasted worse than those you get at a fast food place. They were dry and flavorless. This burger and fries at a diner for $8.99 makes sense but this burger and fries at this posh hotel for $21 was beyond overrated. We spoke up and management got us dessert and that was better than the meal. We appreciated how open and how willing they were to take feedback though. read more

ok, so clink is expensive. but hey, you only go around once and money is just dirty paper, right? i went here for dinner, not for the nightlife/lounge/bar aspect so i can't tell you anything about cougars or their male counterparts. i will say that you are in a pricey hotel so the people from out of town that are staying here are probably about that age. we started with the salad of little gem lettuces which was . . . well . . . a little gem. definitely big enough to split with just enough of a creamy tangy dressing. the home made crouton was a nice touch and there was some kind of pickled vegetable (perhaps a radish?) that was surprisingly good as i am not fond of pickles or radishes. then again, i am not a fan of coffee, but i like coffee ice cream so . . . you know. for dinner i asked for recommendations and, after declining the sea scallops as i'd had swordfish for lunch, i went with the waiter's #2, the berkshire pork loin which came with gnocci and some kind of fish or fish-tasting thing. three words. fan. tas. tic. seriously. each part of the meal occupied its own section of the large rectangular plate and sat in or near just a little bit of complimentary sauce. the sauces were very good, but the food itself was so tasty, it didn't need any sauce. still, to be fair, i ate about half with and half without sauce just to get the full experience. the lady had the ricotta gnudi which, again, was just incredible. (i do note jenny e's bad review of it. not sure what happened there.) i'm not a big fan of ricotta but these were little lumps of cheesy love on a bed of fresh, ripe and sweet yellow tomato slices. i'm not sure how they made this but i could definitely taste parmesan and some kind of smoked cheese (maybe provolone or smoked mozz). somehow, these little balls stuck together while maintaining a soft creaminess from plate to tummy. for dessert we had the chocolate tart, which featured a very nice semi-sweet chocolate, a crispy little pie shell and homemade whipped cream, and the gelatto of the day, which happened to be chocolate chip. neither was left unfinished. small, but not minuscule, portions make for no leftovers which was a bit of a disappointment given the prices. at a restaurant where i'm dropping about $100 per person, i definitely expect the presentation to be special and clink did not disappoint. really, if you go here, before you dig in, take some time to just look at what you are being served because it is being done properly. our waiter found a way to be present at exactly the right moment to bring something/take something away/pour some more champagne without being intrusive and was knowledgeable about the food. the rest of the staff was good, although i only really had one request other than my reservation time - champagne on the table when we got there and it was, in fact, there. the atmosphere is as-described. the large open lobby and tiers going up to what appears to be the original vaulted ceiling definitely looks like it used to be a prison. if that doesn't do it for you, the cell doors throughout should tip you off. so, after the effusive praise why only 4 stars? i have to say it's the price. 2 people, 1 bottle of champagne (their options are basically one $30 bottle and the rest are $70 and up and i didn't get the $30 bottle), 1 appetizer, 2 entrees and 2 deserts was north of $150.00 without the tip. throw in a reasonable tip of 20 - 25% and you're over $100/pp. your pocket might be what clinks on the way out 'cause all you've got left is change. but money's just dirty paper . . . right? read more

Every time I go to Clink, I'm reminded how much I love it there. From the ambiance of exposed brick and wrought iron bars to the delicious food, I am usually wowed. I remember having a ricotta Gnudi dish for restaurant week years ago that I still drool about, and it's finally time I wrote a review! My husband and I went to this sleek, sexy converted jail this weekend for an early Valentine's Day dinner. We were seated at the perfect table for us, right next to the kitchen overlooking all the hubbub. My husband ordered the unique steak tartare appetizer which came with beef bacon and fried egg ice cream, and butter poached lobster over grits for dinner. He thought both were fabulous. I opted for the much talked about cheese board as my entree (a recent theme of mine) and it did not disappoint. My favorites of the 6 options were the perfectly paired Middlebury blue cheese with fig jam and then I mixed & matched the Midnight Moon with quince- yum! The only cheese I didn't love was the Morbier, but I was full without it anyway. It came with a nice portion of delicious raison walnut bread too. Next time, I'd probably only get 4 cheeses to feel satisfied. To finish the meal, my hubby ordered the chocolate torte which was like a molten lava cake, and of course he devoured it. I have to agree with other Yelpers...this place is "over rated". I was kinda excited when a friend invited me here for drinks last night as I wanted to see the redo of the CSJ. While Clink is in the Lobby level, it's not as "cool" as I thought it would be...While not overcrowed for a Tuesday night, I can only imagine how chaotic it would be at full capacity. It would be like standing in a hotel lobby having a drink, which I might add are on the pricey side. It's a good place to see and imagine the space with prisoners, but I don't think it's one of my regular hangouts. read more

Overpriced. Slow. Not very good food. Came here with my sister. It wasn't that busy and it was our last meal before we left to go back home. As we were staying in the hotel, we decided to eat here. It was not busy at all, but it took forever for our waiter to come to our table (he also happened to be in a horrible mood). Our food came to the table promptly, but it was soooo satly that I couldn't even eat it. My sister and I both ordered the salmon omelette and we both agreed that it was wayyyy overly salty. It also came with a side of greens that were SOOO WILTED and SPOILED that I didn't even touch them. The waiter didn't even come by to ask us how our meal was that I couldn't even tell him. We had to ask someone else for our bill and it took him forever to come to our table to give our change back. HORRIBLE. SALTY OMELETTE, BAD DECOMPOSING GREENS and OVERPRICED. SAVE YOUR MONEY. DONT GO THERE. Yes. It's in the swanky hotel, take pictures but leave. It's nothing great. read more

A beautiful Friday afternoon during Restaurant Week 2010, and my coworkers and I headed down to Clink for lunch, expecting the same highly enjoyable experience as we had last year. First course, all was well - the salad and soups were great. Second course, disaster. Two of us ordered the Crispy Chicken and Egg Salad Sandwich with Kimchee and Sweet Potato Fries. I like crispy chicken, egg salad and kimchee. I could not eat that sandwich. It was the worst combination of flavors I have ever experienced, and the rest of the table agreed. The sweet potato fries were fantastic and the desserts ended up being pretty tasty as well, but that sandwich was truly terrible. Go to Clink, by all means, but stay away from that sandwich! read more

Review is for a Saturday brunch meal. Service was great. Try the Bloody Mary bar. Salmon and burrata scramble was good, but watery, served in a puddle. Chicken and waffles sandwich was terrible. The waffles were flavorful, but far too soft and soggy. The chicken was fatty, dark meat pieces thrown together to congeal during the frying process. It resulted in a chewy disaster. I pushed the chicken aside and requested maple syrup so I could eat the waffles. read more

I stayed at the Liberty Hotel on week night. Great hotel. I ate breakfast at Clink the next morning. Awful restaurant. I got the "Belgian" waffle and an orange juice. If "Belgian" is another word for "soggy", then I guess I need to expand my vocabulary. Not only was the waffle soggy (like it was baked and then microwaved with a wet paper towel on it) but it was also $17....for just a waffle and some berries (the berries were very good though). Oh and my 4-6 ounces of OJ was $6. From business travel, I have eaten breakfast at a hotel probably close to 500 times and this is worst value by far and probably the along the most displeasing experiences I've had. Terrible! Went for dinner with 2 friends on Saturday night around 6:30. Overall a crappy experience with some bright spots. Service: Truly terrible. The waiter kept screwing up and seemed snotty and unapologetic about it. Furthermore, he made no attempt to answer our menu questions. Screw up #1: My out of town friend was excited to get the lobster entree. She order it and when our meals were served she was given the lobster bisque. When she explained what she had ordered, our waiter huffed and stomped off. Screw up #2: The waiter dropped the wrong check on our table. We grabbed a bus person to correct this and it took a solid 15 minutes to get our correct check. Screw up #3: We explained carefully how we wanted the check split on our cards, somehow this did not compute and he charged random amounts on each card with no apparent rhyme or reason. Food: Meh. Sooo overpriced. Some bright spots, but overrated. My friends lobster was so rushed (see comment above) that it was totally uncooked and inedible. Served as a tiny golf-ball sized piece swimming in two different sauces. Would have been more enjoyable at a Red Lobster. I had the pork tenderloin. Served with tamarind and pineapple, it was quite tasty, but the meat was very fatty. Adequate portion but sort of uninspired overall. Finally, my other friend had the lamb pappardelle, which was fine. Drinks: The one bright spot! Fantastic wine selection, lots of interesting choices and there were options to suit everyone's tastes. Well, it had to happen eventually - my first 2 star review. Service was terrible and food was just meh. My husband hit it right on the nose when he said this place operates more like a mediocre hotel restaurant than the cool upscale establishment that it could be. We made a reservation for Saturday brunch at 10:00 AM, arrived a few minutes early, and were seated right away. We had a Gilt City deal for 2 coffees + 2 cocktails + 2 brunch entrees + 1 dessert to share. The deal was valued at $88, and was available for $50; I had a 30% off discount, so I only paid $35. I would have been really mad if I had paid $88 or even $50 for this experience. So, we announce that we have a coupon and its like, cue the bad service. If you've read any of my other reviews, you know my love-hate (more hate these days) with Groupon-like restaurant deals because of the way the service always suffers. If only there was a way to announce the coupon at the end of the meal, like "ha-HA, I GOT you!" - but I won't stoop to this, I will always be upfront with my deals, like they want you to be. What can I say, I'm a rules girl. Anywho, we order our coffees and our cocktails (the server allows me to sub an orange juice mimosa for a cranberry mimosa). The coffees come right away, but no milk or cream. By the time we can get the waiter's attention for milk, my husband's coffee is cold, and so we need a new cup of coffee. No problem, the waiter brings over a new cup with a whole pot of coffee and leaves it at our table. We order brunch, and our waiter asks us to put in our dessert order at the same time. I dislike this; why should I have to place my dessert order before I've eaten my entree? It just feels rushed. Since there are only 3 choices for dessert I oblige and quickly choose something. Then, we wait what seems like forever for our cocktails, only they don't come. We get our entrees and our cocktails have still not arrived. We spend a decent amount of time flagging down the waiter, who finally brings us our drinks with the excuse "the bar just finished setting up." First of all, set up your bar before your patrons arrive. Secondly, the table next to us had drinks already, so "ha-HA, I GOT you!" The food was just okay. I had a three-cheese grilled cheese sandwich with tomatoes, and I subbed a fruit salad in place of the sweet potato fries (maybe they hate me because I make lots of substitutions?). I can't identify what the cheese are and the menu doesn't say. My husband ordered a Western omelette. The veggies and ham were diced into tiny pieces and wrapped in a burrito of scrambled egg. I'll never understand why restaurants do this - can't they incorporate the omelette ingredients - I don't know - INTO the omelette? Dessert was even worse - a lame chocolate tarte which looked (and tasted) like it had been produced en masse by a low-end catering company. And the final straw? REDDI-WHIP whipped cream squeezed on top. I could not believe it. Even I can whip cream! How can you take yourself seriously as a restaurant (in the Liberty Hotel, mind you) with REDDI-WHIP!? When the check came, they added a mandatory gratuity (which I also hate - though tipping is optional, I always tip 18-20%, even for terrible service. I just don't like being TOLD to do it), so I pay an extra $17 on top. Even with the coupon, not worth the $35 + $17 = $52 total price. The Liberty Hotel is a super cool venue, and Clink has ambiance. However, I won't be coming back - it is TOTALLY overrated. read more

I have to start by saying it pains me to give "Clink" 2 stars. I love the atmosphere here. It is truly a wonderful location. That being said the food is underwhelming and the waitstaff is indifferent at best. I recently dined at "Clink" for my bachelor party. There were 13 of us and we had one waiter. He was not attentive to our needs at all and kept us waiting a long time. He was also talking over us and our conversations. I ordered my Manhattan and had to go through 3 different bourbons (all of which main staples at any bar) before I could get my drink. As for the food the appetizers were good. Most people entrees were not. My Sirloin strip (ordered rare) came out medium well also the desserts were dry and lacked any flavor what so ever. Let me first start off by saying that the atmosphere in the liberty and clink is awesome! The service was great and very knowledgable. The value however is a different story. Last night I had a special pasta dish with molasses pasta and broccoli rabe, currants and foie gras. It was flavorful but the amount of pasta in comparison to everything else was crazy. I think I had 3 pieces of broccoli rabe in it. My parents got some gnudi dish which was just ok and way overpriced. We left hungry to say the least. Do yourself a favor, go to Scampo downstairs, pay a little more and have an incredible meal that will be a much better value. read more

One of the worst restaurant experiences Ive had in Boston. The hostess was rude, the waiters were inattentive, and we were very mislead about the dishes we ordered. I ordered the scallop dish and only received 4 scallops for the $20+ scallop entree. The waiter initially told me 6 scallops.. Extremely overpriced considering they were well overcooked. I didnt say anything to management at the time because I was with out of town guests and didnt want to make a fuss. I actually emailed the manager a few days later telling that the staff was completely inappropriate (the hostess was making fun of my guests' weight, thinking we couldnt hear her, but we could absolutely hear her). I received a short email reply from the manager saying he would "investigate this matter" and never heard back. If i had been a manager at a restaurant and my guests had been treated this poorly, I would have offered to make it up to them somehow. From his reaction, it seems like this sort of behavior is either normal or acceptable at Clink. read more

My breakfast here was fantastic, so much so that I had to write about it! We went in here at 10:55am and they told us we had to place an order by 11am to get breakfast. I thought the menu was slightly limited so I decided to make up my own dish, it was executed very well. I ordered egg whites with pepperjack cheese, croissants, and turkey bacon. The eggs were fantastic, very cheese, croissants were warm, freshly baked and delicious. The turkey bacon was nice and crispy and my fresh squeezed orange juice was utterly delightful. My friends really liked their food too. Overall, the place is super cute & classy, it has tons of windows, that let in tons of natural light and the service was decent. My buddy asked for a Bloody Mary, and the waiter finally came back with one from the Liberty bar. I don't even drink Bloody Mary's, but this was one was very good. Thankfully I didn't pay the bill here though, for breakfast for 3 people, with 1 cocktail it was $129! What the heck did we order to make it over $100?! HAHA. Anyway, I'm utterly obsessed with the Liberty hotel and breakfast Clink was just the perfect ending to my nice little getaway! Highly recommend going for breakfast! read more

The prices are Boston prices and the food is every bit gourmet as your highest expectations would demand. Wow. Our waiter was a little absent but every person in this place works to keep guests happy. Bread and butter came out. The Espresso martini and sangria were incredible. I would advise going to Clink on a weekday night, at least until the brouhaha has died down. Case in point: I and my two colleagues walked in at 5:50 on a Tuesday this week, got a table immediately, got no attitude after we asked for a second and then a third table (I have some picky friends), and had impeccable, friendly service for the next two hours. The wine prices are steep ($30 for a glass of California cab which I know for a fact is $20 a bottle wholesale?) but the glasses are large and there are plenty of choices. The food was superb, I have to say. The cheeses were nicely served (warning: tiny portions), the blood orange salad was so good I am still thinking about it four days later, and the seared sea scallops were perfectly executed. My friend said the lobster risotto was perfect as well, with no typical skimping on the lobster. Not a place to swing into for a quick bite, but a nice change of pace that has the energy of a high-end hotel running through it. Hats off to Cambridge Seven architects for the spectacular renovation. p.s. I went back two weeks later with a friend for her birthday. She faux-bitched about the lack of a fresh pomegranate martini to Jonah, the maitre d', and not ten minutes later she was served one. Trendy oddly set bar...thought it was really neat that the bar is the hotel lobby. The white leather chairs are probably one of the most comfortable things i have ever sat in. This bar is good if you like fancy cocktails that cost and arm and a leg. It was quite the experience but once was enough for me. read more

It's a shame that this place wasn't done right. What a great opportunity to have a MUST-VIST Boston restaurant. It's not like there is a ton of competition in Boston for fine dining with great decor, so it's heart breaking. So much promise, so little execution. Unfortunately. Horrible quality. Horrible service. Non-courteous and rude management. I would liken this place to a EuroTrash guy. It looks nice. It thinks it's cool. The Liberty Hotel is a neat place to take out of town friends, both for the historical and aesthetic factor. Since Scampo was unexpectedly closed for a staff event, we headed to Clink. Clink is a great option for dinner there, if you're willing to pay a bit more for good food, good service, and a great view. I got a glass of red wine ($11) and a papardelle pasta with lamb ragu ($20). The portion was not very large, but plentiful for dinner. The service was good, not overbearing. Came here for Mother's Day brunch and it was lovely. The appetizers and dessert buffet were the best. We didn't pick the best entrees but they were ok. Service was friendly. For apps we had the burrata cheese and the crab/avocado salad. We also enjoyed their Wake up call cocktail. Entrees were average - steak frites (basic fries & steak had gristle) & chicken/waffles (too sweet). Think we made the wrong selection for our tastes. The mini Boston cream pie and the cheesecake were the best desserts. Overall a positive experience. read more

With the original bars and brick in this ex-jailhouse turned hotel, but with very clean and contemporary decor, this place is worth checking out for the atmosphere. The food, however, was hit or miss and a bit overpriced. The oysters were so-so, nothing like what you can get elsewhere in Boston. My tuna tartare was of low quality and the baby octopi were prepared nicely, but the sauce took away from the dish instead of add to it. This is for "Clink" the restuarant, not the lobby bar. I loved every minute there, every sip and every bite! Beautiful atmosphere and perfect food. Scallops with locally-grown green lentils were amazing. Im craving seconds!! We also walked all around the hotel and really enjoyed reading plaques with the hotel's history. There's also a running video of the hotel as well. Can't wait to go back. Pricey-ish but worth it. The 4 of us enjoyed everything. read more

I wanted to go to the Halloween party at the Liberty with a few of my friends but we are poor planners and the tickets were sold out by the time we decided. Being clever, I made late night reservations for the Clink in order for us to (sneak our way) get in. Needless to say it worked! We avoided their silly cover and instead paid for a great meal and had a great night. I had the duck, which was great (although not the best I've ever had). I was also able to try their grilled chicken with couscous which was also delicious. They also make some great specialty cocktails. Feel free to use my tricks if they sell out of New Year's Eve tickets. read more
