If I could give zero stars, I would. The moment I walked in to check in, the manager ( Suzanne Sullivan) gave me a large attitude. I booked a room for my friends from out of town to meet and get ready for a wedding. The manager yelled at us and called us liars, because we had more people in the room than we booked. However, she did not understand we were not SLEEPING there. We were there to meet and get ready. That is all. She yelled, she told us to get out; and when I asked for a refund she left the "welcome center." If you are desperate for a place to stay and this is your only option, you're better off STAYING IN YOUR CAR. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. read more

After reading the negative reviews we nearly cancelled but there wasn't much else available in town. Glad we didn't. The rooms are large, decently clean and we had a nice stay. In our rooms the A/C was below the window curtains and it worked just fine. Yes, it looks like a "mom and pop" place, there is a cat and it's not the ritz, but there was no problem at all with our stay. As stated, a dead-bolt would be a nice addition though. read more

I was a little hesitant to stay here based on some of the reviews about it being a bit sketchy. But since it was the only place I could find in Salem with two queen beds I went ahead and booked it and was not disappointed. The women at the front desk were very friendly when we checked in. They gave us suggestions on places to eat and a couple DD gift cards (score!). The room was clean and quiet. Even though there looked to be a big group of people from a reunion staying there, we did not hear a thing all night. We walked to downtown for dinner and drinks, which was about a 15 minute walk. We felt perfectly safe, even late at night when we were walking back to the hotel. While this place was definitely overpriced for what it was and it's location, I would stay here again. read more

Absolutely horrible experience. When we first walked in we were greeted by a cat that literally looked dead. Obviously not taken care of. The room smelled of kitty litter/cat urine.Then NOT greeted at all by the woman at the desk who moved slower than molasses, ran our card THREE separate times because she "forgot" things. Repeated herself numerous times about it being a non smoking room, which we booked on purpose, walk into the room and it smells like smoke by the way. We paid extra for fourth person who ended up backing out so when I went into the office to tell her our fourth wasn't coming she rudely responded and said I couldn't get a refund and then said would you rather leave? Okay then, we will NEVER stay here again and I'll make sure to tell every friend, co worker, family member, whoever not to stay here. The rooms are completely outdated, we were only given one key, and to top it all off the blinds don't close over the air conditioner so anyone walking by can just look in. Extremely uncomfortable beds. And the shower actually sounded like it was going to explode when turned on. I have NEVER had such a bad experience through a hotel in my life. The rudeness coming from that woman isn't worth the price, which mind you is too expensive for how 1 star this place is. read more

We stayed at the Clipper Ship in because it was one of the few hotels in the area that wasn't (according to reviews) super cheap and dumpy or super ritzy (or ritzy and dumpy). There was a little bit of shmutz to it, and the place looked a little dated, but everything else was A-OK! It was nice being within walking distance of everything nice in Salem. The only wackiness was that on our second night our towels were removed while we were gone and not replaced. The staff scrounged a few together for us promptly. So basically, it's exactly what you're paying for. Nothing special, no major flaws, perfectly functional. read more

If I could, I'd give this "0" stars, not one, but I don't think that was an option. We booked this place for Sunday through Tuesday, but had to cancel Sunday due to our flights being cancelled. When we showed up on Monday afternoon the lady was very unfriendly in regards to refunding any of our money, though she said that if we could produce written documentation that we weren't lying about our flight being cancelled, she may consider a partial refund. Whatever. That really wasn't the big issue here.. We walked into this office/lobby area and it was beyond disgusting. For one thing, there was an open box of torn up Dunkin' Donuts (I'm assuming for guests to sample?!?), a jar of gravy on a ledge, laundry on a chair, other food type items in cans & containers, kitty litter, and a cat walking all over everything. I happen to like cats so that was the least of it. The desk clerk, by the way, was just downright unpleasant, and that's all I'm going to say about that. For some insane reason we paid for the room (tired & just ready to relax), then proceeded to go check it out. Though it was labeled as non-smoking, you could smell stale smoke, probably having been painted over. The room smelled bad and felt dirty. There was no way we were staying there as it turned our stomachs just standing there, probably a by product of the lobby situation. Ugh. We went back to the office and told the lady we could not stay there. She was very unwilling to bend at all on any refunding and we were too tired (and wimpy) to battle it out, choosing instead to somehow figure it out later. We are now out $400+, and we didn't even stay there!! Obviously, we would in no way ever recommend this hotel to anyone ever, and all we really wanted was a halfway nice place to stay. This does not fall under that category. This is truly the worst experience we've ever had at a hotel anywhere, period, and it unfortunately paints a bit of a crappy picture of the area in general. Horrible experience start to finish... The lady that we made the reservation with seemed very concerned about making a reservation before we arrived, which made sense once we showed up. The facility was awful looking and a ghost town with 1-2 cars in the parking lot when most other places we called were full. When we got to the front door around 5pm it was locked with a sign saying to call a phone number. I called- no answer. Left a message and didn't receive a call back until the next day. I over exerted myself at the gym a few months ago, and unfortunately the end result was a case of tendonitis in my right knee. I am able to walk but do need to keep the right leg elevated at times with a coldpack. Since I live in a house with three stories, I decided it best to rest on the weekend in a hotel/motel where I would not have to deal with the stairs for a few days. I discovered the Clipper Ship and decided to try it and I am pleased that I did for a number of reasons. The Inn is actually a motel and has two stories with an elevator to reach the second floor. The Inn is located on a main street in Salem - about a mile from downtown - which is very convenient. The rooms are large, clean and very comfortable and there are some suites that have a fridge and microwave oven. The Inn is set back from the street so that you do not hear any noise from the street. There is plenty of on-site parking and all rooms face the parking lot so that you can always see your car at all times. The front office staff is very nice and very helpful at all times. There is also 5 different eating establishments literally across the street or within a few minutes walk including a pizza shop, sandwich shop, Dunkin Donuts, and two nice restaurants (The 99 Restaurant and Black Lobster). Most of them give a discount if staying at the Inn. I have been staying there periodically on weekends for the last few months and have enjoyed my stays there. If you are looking for a very posh hotel, the Cliiper Ship Inn may not be your first choice.. But if you are looking for a nice place to stay with reasonable rates and a convenient location near all the sites in Salem, the Clipper Ship Inn cannot be beat. read more

Room #142 was large. 2 queens. Super clean. Less than $140 for 2 adults & a small dog. Box TV & real keys! Mattresses are rock hard though. I know they are a personal preference but they are beyond firm. Prob would stay 7 miles down road at Double Tree next time and spend the extra $40. They have great mattresses. read more

An older property that could use some updating. The staff is nice bit the owner is nuts! We checked in on a rainy evening after a long drive for a four night stay. My wife h s some mobility issues and waited in the car while I checked in. I paid with my wifes card and the clerk insisted my wife come in to sign the receipt. When I explained her situation the clerk brought the paperwork out to her. (most places just let me sign...my name is on the account too) Our room consisted of a large living room with sofa and dining area with a small table and chairs with coffee maker, micro wave and fridge. The room was very dim and had no TV. The bathroom was large and clean. The bedroom had two Queen sized beds and a dresser that left room for little else. On the dresser was an old 19" TV. Looking to relax after the drive we settled in and turned on the TV but not all the channels worked. When we called the front desk about this we were told "You are on vacation. Why are you staying in your room...go out!" Eventually we were told there was a problem with the cable and it would be fixed the next day. My wife and I tend to sleep in on vacation and we were awakened the next morning about 9 or 10am by housekeeping pounding on our door. I explained we would be out shortly and called the front desk to ask why it was necessary for housekeeping to awaken us. THe front desk called me a liar and said they knew we were up (we were not!) because they had looked in the windows! Shortly after this the owner called and said she could see we were going to be a problem and if we did not check out by noon the police would be called. Unbelievable! I travel alot probably averaging about 2 months a year in hotels, motels and have NEVER been treated so badly. Avoid this property! read more

This place was an utter disaster. It was filthy, the receptionist was rude, unhelpful and did not wear a mask (there was a small plexiglass panel but for the most part he was not behind it.) Worst of all, we did not feel safe. We encountered 2 men, one in the parking lot and one in reception, who were intoxicated. Another guest who was not well was in an argument with the receptionist who was telling her she couldn't stay there because she didn't have ID. She was crying that she had already paid for the room - it was awful. There was a cat in reception (I'm allergic) and there was cat hair everywhere. In addition, I was being charging $100. for a security deposit. I told him that I didn't have a problem with him taking my card number but I did not want to be charged. He told me I would be refunded in about a week at which point it was clear that this was not a good place to stay. Our weekend plans were sabotaged and we were unable to find a room elsewhere so had to drive 3 hours home. Later when I disputed the charge with Expedia, they refused to grant me a refund because the hotel wouldn't grant me one (I will NEVER book with Expedia again). I called the hotel to speak with the manager directly and she was incredibly rude - she wouldn't let me finish my sentence and ended up hanging up on me when I started to describe the problems. I have stayed at the Clippership many times over the years just for the fact its good for a tight budget compaired to most other places in the area. My theory is its only a place to sleep and shower since I will be out on the town exploring morning til late at night so why pay for a $300 room? well, I got my answer this past weekend as to why I won't scrimp on where I stay ever again. My husband and I came up Friday for a 2 night stay for our anniversary. At checkin, we dealt with a man at the desk who was plesant enough. We got to our room and it looked like a roach motel. I know its never anything fancy there but this particular room was dark and dingy. my husband kept jokingly doing the "ree ree ree ree" from the stabbing in the shower scene from Psycho! LOL! so, whatever, we took showers and were heading out anyway and called a cab to head into town. We arrived via cab back to the hotel around 11 or so. I was a little tipsy and wearing 5 inch stilletos so naturally my hubs came around my side of the car and helped me out. As we are walking towards the stairs, the owner Suzanne was sweeping the sidewalks. She says "Where have you guys been to and how come you are arriving back at my hotel this late and it obviously looks like you have been drinking and I'm not comfortable with that" Shocked, we went up to our room and I stewed on it a few minutes and I couldn't stand how rude and intusive this lady was so I went down to the office to confront her and tell her it was uncalled for to have treated us two 30 year olds like we are 15 and shes our mom. She says to me "I was concerned for you because you look like you were being manhadled and couldn't walk properly." I then says to her "well, if my husband giving me an arm to hold on to while getting out of a cab while wearing 5 inch stilletos looks like manhandeling to you you are clearly mistaken." and she apologized and said "ok, I feel better now that you explained yourself." REALLY?! I'm paying you money to rent a room, this isn't a boarding house and who do you think you are?! it doesn't end here... Since it was kinda still early, my husband and I decided to have a beer together on the balcony. a long term resident renter there came outside and accused us of stealing her plastic chairs. I'm pretty sure all those white plastic chairs are for everyone. So we ignored her and carried on with our beers and were just about to head to bed when the cops show up. The owner said we were having a loud party and disrupting guests. ummm having a quiet beer with my hubs is a wild party? hmm ok... the cops were cool, said she calls them all the time over the most petty things and to just maybe wrap it up and head to bed and they suggested we find a new hotel in the morning as they don't recommend anyone stay there. So we did what we were told not wanting further problems. My husband then goes down to the office and asks for a refund. Says hes not comfortable spending another night here and said he was appauled by how we have been treated. she refunded us our money and he came back up and we booked a new hotel and were on our way to bed when theres a knock on the door. Hubs gets up and opens it and whos standing there? the cops again!!!! She said she felt threatened by us and wanted us to leave right away! at this point its 2 AM and we have been drinking, obviously we can't go drive anywhere. We explain everything that has happened to the cop and he says to not listen to her, she's bat shit crazy, stay the night cuz we have been drinking but definatly leave first thing when you get up. He said if SHE gives us any more grief to call him personally and he gave us his number. He said he's so sick of this woman and so isn't the police department. needless to say, we high tailed it out of there asap in the morning and checked in to a beautiful water front hotel. we treated ourselves to an expensive treat just cuz after all that we deserved it. Do not stay at the Clipper Ship Inn!! The woman, Suzanne, who may be the owner/manager was rude to us from the get go. She blantly stated that our friend "stunk" like smoke and there was no smoking permitted in rooms. She said this in front of other people checking in which totally humilitated our friend. Of course he knew that smoking was not permitted in rooms and he only smokes outside....this is how it is everywhere. She said that people complain of allergies and smoke smell and she wanted to put him in a smoking room; when he doesn't smoke in rooms. Next outside it says No Pets Allowed, yet inside was 2 cats and ONE OF THEM WAS ON TOP OF THE COUNTER!!. There was also a sign inside that said Pet Friendly Hotel. Hmmm, that is contradictory wouldn't you say. And if she is worried about customers being allergic, well, what about cat allergies. Hmm, guess that doesn't apply to THEM. We got our rather dumpy room and said...it will be ok for 2 nights and besides everything else was booked up. Not the end of our problems. Late that night around 11ish, we couldn't get into our room. Our key didn't work. And someone next door was coming back as well, and her key didn't work. My husband went down to the office and big surprise; there was no one there. Only a sign saying "Be back in 20 minutes". We had already been there 15 trying to get in. We waited another 15, called the main number, no answer, and no emergency number. Just before breaking the window to get in, someone with a flashlight came and my husband jimmyed the lock some and miraculously the key went in. He did the same for the person next door. He called the office from inside after 15 minutes more and this woman Suzanne answered and did not offer any apology for our inconvenience or reason why we couldn't get in; she only said, well, you are in now right. Unbelieveable, again who are the patrons here? Not finished.....come to find out that there is no sign anywhere that says if you lock the button from the inside, you will not be able to get in with your key from the outside. Hellooooooo, wouldn't you think that would be the first thing you would notify your patrons so they are not standing in the cold at all hours of the night trying to jiggle their key to work for 15 minutes!!! On check out, we brought it up to a nicer woman at the counter and told her no one was around when we were locked out. She said someone is supposed to be there until midnight (then what!!). Suzanne, the owner/manger????, walked in and said she was there all night until midnight and my husband said no you weren't and she said yes I was and then my husband said, no you weren't because I knocked on the door for 10 minutes and called the phone and no on was in the office! She said, oh you were the guy that called last night? Well I had to go out for a few minutes!!!! Ha, caught in a bold face lie. My husband said, you lied and she said it's none of your business what I do. Ha, are you kidding me???? We preceded to talk about her rudeness and lack of accountability and flaws in the motel (pets on the counter....allergic people) but mostly the service and rudeness of her. Unfortunately with her abrasiveness and not being able to get a word in edgewise, and again with no apologies, the conversation ended with dropping an f-bomb and we gladly left saying that we were going to let others know about this place by yelping and we are also contacting the Salem Chamber of Commerce and the people that referred us to stay there. One more thing...she kept saying that she had just had heart surgery and she didn't need this confrontation. I say, maybe it wasn't time for you to return to work and maybe you shouldn't be running this place at all. If you want this place to survive, you might want to have people with better customer service skills do the talking and managing for you Suzanne. read more

Most horrible experience ever! I have never been to a more disgusting establishment and received such horrible customer service. After being given a room filled with garbage and questionable smells, we went back to the front desk to explain what had happened and the woman was extremely rude and dismissive. We did not want to stay at the motel as none of the rooms were of better quality. My fiancé and I tried to just leave quietly after we could not get our money back. When I contacted the company used to book the room the woman at the front desk continued to insult me to the customer service representative stating "she must not used to hearing no." Wish I had read all of the comments before to be aware of how awful this place is. They also go in your room when you're gone. We set up a camera to see after all of our stuff was found in odd places. NEVER GO THERE! Believe me you'll save yourself money and grief. They should be shut down!!! Simply terrible. Rude. My experience echoes every negative review this place has received. My mother stayed her for three days while my Dad was in a local hospital for a stroke. The room was dirty and she felt unsafe because of the poor lock on the door. The worst part...my father's health declined and my siblings and I needed a place to stay. The Clipper Ship Inn was the only place that was close enough to the hospital and had a room available. (The hospital had a strict visiting hour policy and we could not stay there.) We explained our situation to Suzanne over the phone. She was ready to book the room until we asked how many people a suite could accommodate? Without even asking the number of people in our party or giving us the option to rent 2 rooms, she refused to rent to us and rudely hung up the phone. My sister-in-law called back and nicely explained we would rent an extra room if need be and Suzanne hung up again! I wish there was an option to give this dump 0 stars. read more

The Hotel is decent with nice rooms for the cost. However the owner is rude, snoops around in the rooms, creepily stands in the parking lot counting cars with her clipboard, and worst of all...connected with the snooping, We had only been checked in for a short time when we went to the historic district. The next morning she was able to identify items that we brought with us. She had been in our room while we were out. The time we were gone was not during a time rooms were being serviced. We left the hotel in the evening for a few hours and in the morning she confronted me about bringing a travel candle with me. It was small in size 1oz with a lid, and I always take them with me in case the room has an odor. The candle was NEVER lit. She got a huge attitude about it, and said "You bring your own decorations with you?" . She repeated herself about 7 times. I can understand if the candles are against hotel policy, but that should be stated at checkin or when you reserve your room. Or there should be a list of rules in the room. I have used them many times. My point is that it is creepy that she was snooping around in our room right after we left. So who knows what she was doing. We felt VERY violated. She was also mad that we removed the top layer of bedding and put our own pillows and blankets on top of the sheets. Their blankets were folded nicely and placed in the closet, so I do not see the issue. Also, every time we returned to our room the air conditioner which was in poor condition, was turned off. We wanted to come back to a cool room on the warmer days, and came back to an oven because they were most likely trying to save on energy. Many people in town told us they have heard many similar stories and said that she is known to snoop through peoples things. They have also heard of how horribly rude she is and said they are embarrassed for how she represents the city. As she is a representative. The maid was very nice and always provided anything we needed. The owner tried to backtrack when I checked out, and apologized for "coming down hard on us" and asked if I thought she was rude, I told her that she was very abrasive and it was not appreciated. She gave me a Dunkin Donuts gift card to make up for it. I know the reality is that she does this all of the time to people, and now she was trying to save face so she did not receive another bad review. I will never stay here again or recommend it to anyone. If it weren't for her strange and rude behavior, I would stay here again in a minute. Pay the extra money to stay at The Hawthorne, but book early because it fills fast. Or stay at a bed and breakfast or other comparable hotel. I wish I would have looked at more reviews before I booked, she has had similar reviews to this one about being rude and exhibiting strange behavior. She made the stay very uncomfortable. read more

In my 30 years of staying in hotels, motels and inn across America I have never felt like I didn't get my moneys worth..... that is until i stayed at the Clipper ship. I've never slept on a more uncomfortable bed ($100.00 a night) and have never seen mgrs/owners treat customers so badly. After a disagreement over my bill that they never made good on I wrote a bad review of my stay on other sites. Well, it seems they didn't like my review and then decided to call the police and make a false report claiming i defecated on their carpet! This was a family vacation with my wife and daughter. Well I will have to agree with many of the negative reviews about the lack and tact of their customer service when a problem arises. We originally booked through Expedia and when confirming our booking with clipper ship inn she stated she saw nothing booked for us with Expedia and booked it for us her self(even though I had a confirmation number with Expedia). Needless to say Expedia charged us as well as clipper ship for the original booking and now a month later I keep getting the run around from clipper ship saying they will call back, look into it, they don't see an Expedia booking Yada Yada Yada.....the list of excuses goes on. Everytime I call back they keep asking me the EXACT same questions I have been asked in my 3 previous conversations I've had with them. I AM in customer service and the run around and lack of response for a customers legitimate concern would not in anyway be tolerated with my company. I do not understand what all the run around is and I hope to get to the bottom of this soon. read more

I stayed here many years ago and after reading the reviews was kind of worried about booking here again but, it was the only hotel in Salem for the weekend we went.... 09/23/16 - 09/25/16. So, since they were the only place with rooms I booked...... I am glad I did. It is an AFFORDABLE place to stay and CLEAN........ We got there early so our room was not ready ( the suite with mini fridge and microwave ). But, the woman at the desk was actually really nice! She gave us DD cards and actually took the time to pull out a map and tell me where everything was so we had things to do while waiting for our room! Which we didn't mind cause after all we were there to go exploring and not stay in the room! She was very helpful! And the lobby cat was adorable...... So, when we returned I was able to check in and the gentleman at the front desk was friendly as well and we me one of the residents that stay there...... They are not homeless... they have a home it just happens to be at the Inn... and he was really nice as well... People should NOT judge just because someone lives differently then they do! AND I found out later that the people that live there pay more then I do in rent... and I live on Long Island in a good area people... so it is not cheap..... I learned this from having an actual conversation with the woman at the desk AND a different resident of the Inn the day we were leaving... We went outside and met Chumley ( the black cat ) who is beyond friendly! When we came back the first night we had gotten ice cream and I forgot a spoon... The gentleman at the front desk did not have a spoon but, went out of his way to get me a plastic fork..... which worked. The Sat morning, when we were setting out for our adventure that day, the housekeeper went out of her way to get my attention and to tell me to have a great day.... this is before she had seen that we left her a tip. Which she had written us a nice thank you note that I got when we returned that evening. It is the little things.... Now it is not ALL roses and sunshine.... the room we had was huge and two parts! which was nice.... I will agree with the reviews that they should have a dead bolt.... The area was FAR from being dangerous or bad but it is just for piece of mind. Also, yes the AC in the window is not convenient so, I would say def bring clips if you plan on using the AC.... that is what we did. I would DEF stay here again!! Just had a very nice stay in Salem. This motel was close to all the main sites (just down the road, turn on Winter St.). Very basic rooms, but clean and everything worked.The ladies were all friendly and helpful.This is the place to stay if you are on a budget, or like me, prefer to spend my money on stuff outside of the room. Loved the cats & the feeling that they have regular customers who visit year after year. I will be going back myself next fall. read more

I booked a room here for three nights through Travelocity, giving my credit card for a one-night deposit. Five days later, I get a call from them telling me they didn't get my credit card info and I need to give that over the phone to book the room. She said the credit card info is only up for a day, so apparently it's my problem that they don't do their booking paperwork daily. I told them I wasn't going to give my credit card info over the phone, and that I felt like this was a problem between them and Travelocity, not me. I was polite about it, though as they kept repeating the same information and insisting that I give them my cc info, I got irritated. Finally someone else, who introduced herself with "It's me", no name, came on and repeated the same spiel. When I replied that I thought she should call Travelocity to sort it out, she told me she was cancelling my reservation as I was not cooperating and obviously I didn't want to keep the reservation. At this point, I admit I lost it a bit as I had been dealing with this BS for a while and my baby was crying in the other room, and told her to go ahead and cancel as I wouldn't stay there if she paid me. I might have sworn. I wish I had read the reviews here before booking this in the first place. I can't imagine how a place like this, a dump going by the accounts here, run by insanely rude people with no customer service skills, stays in business. DO NOT STAY HERE!!! Made a reservation, my wife shows up at after 9pm and there is a sign on the door that says temporarily closed and to call a number. She calls and gets an answering machine, calls again same story. Finally shows up over 45 mins later (after Hotels.com got involved) and they owner says my wife is upset (rightfully so) and she doesn't want her staying there!! After yelling at my wife and repeating that she didn't want her staying there the owner said she was calling the cops, put her coat on and left my wife in the parking lot!! Unbelievable!!! This place is so incredibly unprofessional. I called to check the price of a room for a particular night. I was quoted $120. I called back 3 hours later to book the room and was told it was $150. I questioned it and was met with the rudest "customer service" person I have ever encountered. She said there was nothing she could do and hung up on me. I called back 3 times to try and speak with a manager or owner and was hung up on each time and finally had to leave a message. I guess I dodged a bullet by not staying there. I would not stay there now if they paid me. Run from this place is my advice. read more

I would never stay at this place based on the rudeness of the woman who picked up the phone when I called to inquire about rates. I have never encountered someone with such lack of common courtesy and dismissive rude behavior. When I called back to speak to a manager to report her, she informed me that she is the manager. Rooms are Cozy & clean, scented nicely, beds are comfortable & clean,, Location to the town is a $6 taxi ride...easier than finding parking in town & cheaper ....Staff was nice & informative on Salem attractions & received $3 Dunkin donuts give cards . well worth the $ & would go back again :) read more

Absolutely the worst hotel experience of my life!!!! I saved the best for last so please read everything i wrote... I stayed at the clippership inn on 12/2/12 because i lost electricity and heat at my apartment. Needing a warm place to sleep and take a hot shower i was forced to find a hotel for the night. I take the train into work every day so finding a hotel close to a train station was necessary. The clippership inn was the best price i could find and also close to a train station.So i called around 9pm on a sunday night to book a room and a woman named SUZANNE SULLIAVAN answered the phone i asked her if there was any rooms avialable for the night.And the answer i got was shocking !! . With out telling me yes or no. Rudely and sarcastic she asked me why i needed to book a room so late at night sounds suspicious to me she says. I was shocked by her answer/question !! If the clippership wasn't my only option i would have told her off. But i bit my tongue and told her i lost power and heat at my place and needed a room so i could get ready for work and walk to the train station in the morning. So i arrive at the hotel around 10pm and the woman i spoke to on the phone was at the front desk in the lobby.I told her my name and i would like to check in. She says to me "oh your the guy that supposably lost power and heat like i was lying about it or something.She goes on to asking me how many people are staying? i said just my self. Are you sure she asked me because if I seeanyone els in the room I will charge you extra. Now im pissed off and insulted !! Yes im sure i told her and i dont like the way im being treated like im a liar. She never said sorry and told me i just wanted to warn you. So then i pay for the room and $100 deposit and go to my room. Ok so the room was clean and simple but the bathroom looked like a public bathroom the toilet was running all night and the shower i took in the morning was like standing in front of a squirt gun barely any warter came out . Also the heat only worked on high so the room was like a sauna... Now comes checkout time and whos working the front desk ? "SUZANNE SULLIAVAN" i guess a nights sleep didnt help her with her people skills she was just as rude and acted like me checking out was a inconvenience for her ..So she goes to check my room so i can get my deposit back and when she comes back she says all the windows where open in the room so i must have smoked cigarettes in the room And i wasnt going to get my $100 dollars back. the only reason she new i smoked is because i had a cup of warter "outside" with cigarettes butts in it so she assumed i smoked inside too.. Then she says if i dont leave the hotel she will call the cops !! so i said good call them and they came and agreed with me that the room didnt smell like smoke nor did they find anything in the room that mite show that i did .But they couldnt force her to give it back and now im forced to go to court !!! We had booked this hotel ahead of time but ended up canceling it as we found out after booking of the upcoming snowstorm. Lets just say the storm was a lifesaver, as the woman at the front desk was the most unprofessional, nastiest woman I've ever spoken too. She wouldn't let me cancel because she didn't believe me when I said the incoming storm would prevent us from traveling. She then hung up and called back 45 min later because she had to check the weather herself, I guess she thought the weather station lied to me. She kept insisting that the storm would not hit, even though I told her I needed to cancel since I was not going to be traveling at all anymore, and to forget the reasoning for canceling. She then proceeded to tell me that bad weather wasn't a good enough reason for canceling since the day I booked my stay it was raining in Salem (not the days I was staying, but the day I booked online from home). She then proceeded to lecture me on the consequences of booking a hotel. She also decided she wanted to make herself sound "intelligent" and would use the word "dissertation" in place of "exemption", and when I had no clue what she was talking about, she treated me as if I was dumb. A dissertation is a long essay on a particular subject, especially one written as a requirement for the Doctor of Philosophy degree, so who knows what she thought she was saying. This was just one of the idiotic things this woman said. It took about 2 hours just to get her to cancel the reservation, I guess she thought if she didn't cancel our reservation we'd still come? I would never recommend. Also Salem did get blasted by that "nonexistent" storm. read more

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. Run screaming. To be fair, I never actually stayed there. I booked a stay there as a back-up on hotels.com. I found a nicer place for a reasonable rate (hard to do in Salem) and cancelled my stay through hotels.com. My refund never posted. I called hotels.com FOUR TIMES, including a call to the hotel themselves and they still have yet to process my refund. They were rude as all heck when I called the hotel, no apologies, nothing. They said they never received the first notice of cancellation. Then they kept saying they would process the refund that day and I am still waiting for it to hit my credit card (the first phone call was almost a MONTH ago). I now am left to dispute the transaction because the hotel has held on to my money so long and how am I to trust that they will ever give it back to me? I should've listened to the reviews, but I thought, what is the harm in booking if I can cancel for free? This experience has not been free, it's been a huge waste of my time, money and energy. Though I can't speak to the experience of staying there, if their extreme lack of human decency and lack of customer service is any indication, I would not be surprised if staying there was just as unpleasant as my battles with them. read more

well first off the front desk lady and her husband(?) need a severe attitude change !!! grumpy and rude are a understatement ! we arrived last weekend. snow on the ground and very cold. I went to the front desk to ask for extra shampoo, conditioner and blankets. You would have thought I asked for one of her kidneys !!! I left the office with 1 shampoo! I was told that the rooms get warmer and that each bed had a blanket on it. well duh !!! I mentioned I was a cold sleeper and would like an extra blanket. She said try out the room first. Never did get that extra blanket !!! and the room didn't get that warm !! She saw me standing outside the office smoking and she told my husband is a very "snippy " tone` " your room is no smoking" his reply was" she doesn't smoke inside at home so she will not be doing it here " Her reply was " she had better not" ...come on lady I am a grown up, I can read and follow the rules !!! OMG!!! What a horrible woman!!! We only got to see the lobby. It was less than what we expected but it was a place to lay our heads down for a couple days so we were hoping that at least the room would not be this bad. But we would not know because we were unable to stay. We made our reservation on 05/02/2017 for a 06/13/2017 stay. We were coming from VA Beach, VA and made it to New Jersey. While in New Jersey we decided to go on up to Salem, MA so I called the Clipper Ship Inn to ask if they could accommodate us (Myself and my 5 yr old) I was very taken aback by her response, she (Suzanne - Owner) asked "just when did I make that decision?" Wow!! Really? I tried to over look the frustration in her voice and the odd question and asked again if she could accommodate us. She responded with she'd have to call me back... After hours that call never came and we were getting closer to Salem still needing a place to stay. I called again and got Wonda on the line and was able to make a reservation for that night. We got stuck in traffic and when we got to there they had a sign on door that read CLOSED with a # to call. Just what you want to find after traveling all day. Suzanne said very rudely that she would be 10 minutes. I let her know that I had to pee as well as my 5 yr old and was told to go to the Dunken Donuts as they did not have a restroom in the lobby. Yep just what I wanna do... Take my 5 yr old to the Dunken Donuts. GRRRR But in our state we had no choice. When we got back there and walked in the lobby Suzanne acted like I was gone for hours and she was waiting but actually it was no longer than just time to buy a Donut and to use their restroom, cause when you walk in Dunken Donuts with a 5 yr old that has sat patiently for 5 hours in a car ride from New Jersey that's what ya do. Suzanne asked for me to sign a card with only letter head before she put any room charges or itemized items on the card. After not wanting to do this I was told that I could not stay there. I pleaded with this woman to reconsider her decision to throw us out for asking a reasonable question as to what I may be signing. She refused. I can only surmise that the good reviews for this place are fake and from the owners their-self trying to contradict all the bad reviews. PLEASE don't believe the good reviews... Pay the extra and go somewhere else. The price for this place is not reasonable it is a $50 per night place at best and with the attitude from the owner even that is too high. I've been going to Salem, MA once a year, at different times of the year, for five years. We ALWAYS stay at the Clipper Ship Inn. NEVER AGAIN!!!! There are black flying bugs by the window sill and over one of the beds that never happened before. You get the occasional bug flying in when you open the door but I mean they were gathering in groups of no less than ten. There is an option if you want to have your towels washed everyday. Towels on the floor will be washed, towels hung up are left alone. I left towels on the floor, my girlfriend hung hers up. The cleaning staff took all the body towels, and replaced none. So we went to the front desk, after 11 pm to ask for some, and again we were met with attitude. Either she wasn't listening or she was trying to find cracks in our story but she kept asking me and then my girlfriend why we didn't have towels. The main complaint, is the professionalism. When you first walk in, there is a pleasant girl with brown hair who greeted us. When it was discovered that there was a billing issue, (someone had misheard me and thought we were staying for an extra night) she said we had to wait for the manager. From the moment she walked through the door, she had a sour face. She claimed the mistake was mine as they are always throrough. Why would I lie about how many nights I'm staying? Instead of saying, I'm sorry about the mistake, but I've turned away business holding the room for you, I'm going to charge you atleast half, I got well I'm going to have to charge you. That's it. Maybe if I can sell the room I'll refund your money. To date I have not been refunded. I was so embaressed in front of my girlfriend after I had built this place up. When we told Witch City Segway about our ordeal, they suggested Morning Glory which is closer. Not sure about the price but almost anything would be better than this place. read more
