I absolutely love Clive's. Their happy hour is amazing along with their food. It's always fun and the service is usually very fast. We do To-go a lot more now and it's as if we actually went there. Rarely have I had a bad experience here. The only complaint I would have is that the mixed drinks taste like 90% alcohol and 10% mix. You really have to gag it down. BUT their beer mugs are frozen and amazing and such a good deal. Highly recommend especially love their seasonal menu changes to keep things changing. read more

Went here for dinner to have more of home cooked dinner feel than your standard quick in and out places. Had some time and always had seen this restaurant while driving past it. The menu is filled with variety with amazing apps listed as well as sandwiches, burgers, full entree dinners (steak, chicken, fish, with 2 sides etc.) It was really hard to make a decision due to the menu that they had available, but I went with the Country Fried Chicken with gravy side of mashed potatoes and green beans. First off, when the dish came out I did not expect how big the plate was! It was a huge plate of food one person! Even for myself! The country fried chicken was made with perfection! It was amazingly breaded where it was almost like eating an actual fried chicken! The chicken still had tons of juice and cutting into it and taking that first bite sold it! The flavors that the gravy adds to the chicken completes the meal! The mashed potatoes were your normal mashed potatoes nothing too different, nor were the green beans! But amazing and flavorful nonetheless. The service was great as well! My waitress ensured that I was constantly filled with water and also enjoying my food that I have ordered! I've been to Clive's numerous times and love it. They have a wide selection of options and great happy hour deals. It's family friendly, has a AWESOME patio with quality service. I usually receive my food in a decent amount of time and service is frequently walking by to check on us. Portions are always solid too. I've never had any issues and love bringing friends due to the wide variety. First and foremost, they have Tater tots!! I love that they have tater tots as their options for a side, cause let's be real. In Minnesota, we LOVE our tater tots! I love their sandwiches because they come with a solid amount of meat in them! I also LOVE their warm pretzels because they come to you actually warm! Like I love holding the plate and feeling the warmth and often have to wait a minute for them to cool down before I can actually eat them! Their hours for their happy hours are a little weird, but I believe they changed them. My go to is their nachos cause you get this HUGE pile that I always split with my boyfriend because it's too big to eat on my own. They have a full bar, with many different beer options, including even some local brews, cause everyone loves that local brew! It's my go to place for game days food because they always have the game on, and is more fun of an environment then Buffalo Wild Wings and just as many TV's. I'm always glad to see a new place to eat open in Champlin. I don't expect this to become a favorite place to eat but I think it may be OK. We went there for lunch. I had a Cajun walleye sandwich and my wife had chicken fried chicken. My wife loved her lunch. I tasted it and it was pretty good. As for mine, I have to say that people in the Midwest have some strange ideas about food. I didn't taste any Cajun spices at all and it was the first and only fish or Cajun food that I have ever eaten that was covered with melted cheddar cheese. I didn't see much else on the lunch menu that appealed to me but I am not ready to give up on Clive's yet. read more

I have been a regular here for almost 2 years Service is great or service totally blows depending or who your server is. I finally said something and was told they didn't care if I came back or not. The general manager said see you next time as I was walking out the door and I told him I would not be back. His response was "promises, promises!" In fairness to him I'm not sure if he was joking or not but it doesn't matter really either. I was here last night and got treated like a king and doubled my tab as a tip for my server. Meh is right. It was ok but not any better than other restaurants in the area (and there are some slim pickins in Champlain). They have a nice patio. Unfortunately, it's on the east side so no sun in the afternoon or evening. I split a Cuban with a friend. Their Cuban consisted of ham, pulled pork, and the other usual ingredients on a Cuban. My friend, who has an aversion to bbq sauce, wanted to make sure there was none on it. The server said no. When it came out, it had plenty o' bbq sauce on it...disappointingly so. None of the other items on the menu looked overly appealing. And none of my friends were overly impressed. Our server was nice and did a good job. I'll give her that. read more

I love Clives! Whenever I'm in the area I make it a point to stop in. I was in late last week and was impressed by how good the quality of food was at 11:30 at night. My favorite is the margherita pizza; 6 bucks on happy hour. I also like the fact that tater tots are available as a side without an upcharge. A dollar for seasoned sour cream is a bit steep though. Food/Drink: We stopped here for a drink and boy was it worth it. Not sure what the size of beer was, but it was big. Make sure that you like the beer you order otherwise you'll be miserable which isn't good for anyone. They do have a decent selection, but nothing remarkable. Saw a couple food dishes fly by, but didn't see or hear anything sounding el-awesome. Ambiance: I'm not sure what a road house is, but gosh darn't this is the best one I've been to. Big bar with enough tables to shake a stick at, but really the patio is the hook. If you get a chance, get out there, kick back and relax. The clientele was surprisingly lively for this neck of the woods. We left a little earlier then close, but it was still hopping enough at the bar to make sure you had a good time with everyone else. Service: No real issue. Beers were ordered and delivered. Empty equaled next order and she checked if we wanted the same before progressing down a fiasco of failure. We did go through a few waitresses, which could have been either their shift setup or that we were there that long (did I mention those are big beers?). Overall: There's a bunch of other bars you could absolutely fail at. This is not one of them, especially considering the location and ambiance. Choose this over any chain and you'll be a happy camper. Not sure about the food, so take your chances there. read more

Clive's has a fun & upbeat atmosphere no matter what time of the day you're there. Food is similar to other bar food, so nothing real special about it. I just really like the atmosphere. They have a DJ on certain evenings, other evenings they have bar/drinking games which you can enjoy with a group of friends. They also serve free popcorn! Lol. We went to Clive's Roadhouse with some friends on a Friday night at 5:30pm. I initially ordered the slow cooked roast beef, it was so salty I couldn't eat it - I asked my Husband to try it, just to make sure it wasn't just me- he almost spit it out. I flagged down the waitress, told her of the problem, and she said "So, what do you want?" I asked what was fast- she scoffed, looked around and said "right now- nothing" - I guess since they were busy. I asked for a cheeseburger medium rare. She handed me a small plate and had me slide my roast beef sandwich onto it- and off she went. She came back fairly quickly with a cheeseburger on a small plate. My husband gave me a funny look when she delivered it, and said you better cut that before you eat it- I cut it in half and it was RAW- barely brown on either side- cold, raw. We flagged the waitress down - again- and showed her the burger. "ok, so what do you want me to do"? I said pardon me? She said- "what do you want- I just want to get you something you will like and EAT" I told her I didn't want anything else. She said she would send over a manger- and left me with the food. The Manager came by and asked what the trouble was- I showed him the burger and he said "Oh, she should have given you OUR definition of medium rare" and proceeded to explain that most restaurants over cook their meat, and this was done properly- Honestly- Clives is no where near the type of restaurant that should be telling customers that they follow cullinary guidelines for meat cooking standards- nor should the manger have assumed that I didn't know such standards. My husband asked if my burger looked medium rare to him- under "their" standards- he turned up his nose and then said it might be a little rare". So sufice it to say I was not pleased with being scolded by both my waitress AND her Manager. They did comp me one glass of wine off of our bill. $4.50. The other people at the table had average luck with food for an Applebee's type place. Sadly the best tasting item that we were served was their Tator-tots. Which I'm told are a big staple at restaurants who set their own meat cooking standards. . . read more

The food is completely unremarkable. It's like they really don't try and really don't care. The menu looks diverse, but many of the dishes have the same spice (chipotle pepper) in them. There is no "plain" hamburger. The "fries" are waffle fries (frozen). I've had better food at fast food restaurants. The waitress said that the tacos were a popular item. I'm not sure why. You get 3 soft shell tacos, some salsa, and chips for about $12.00. The only thing notable about the tacos was the lack of ingredients. They were nearly devoid of chicken, tomatoes, AND lettuce. You can get better tacos at Taco Bell or Taco John, for about $1.39 each. The restaurant is so noisy that you can't hear the person sitting next to you. All in all... don't make the trip. One of the WORST places to go. Menu is bland, prices are absurd for the amount of food you get. Service SUCKS for a late night bar & grill-you'd think servers would be on top of their game. Manager is never anywhere to be found. Tonight I complained about both the service & the food. Miss thang took half an hour to come take my order when I said give me a few moments-I didn't order anything after my brother's buffalo sandwich was ick. My boyfriend's nachos were beyond grotesque. Despite it tasting blech, I had a few bites & towards the bottom of the plate, we found a 2-3 centimeter long black live ant nibbling away at one of the black olives. Real crowd pleaser their nachos. Absolutely DISGUSTING. This restaurant replaced the Moon Rock Cafe in Champlin. After sitting empty for over a year, I was glad to have it open and was anxious to try it. It has been open awhile now and I have been there three times. The first time was underwhelming with tater tots served as the side. I like tater tots, but it is not very creative. We went back for lunch again and I had the reuben sandwich special with sweet potato fries. It was a very nice improvement and things were looking up. The service was great both times. The last time we went with company in town was in the evening. The place was hopping, full, and noisy. I was happy to see it being successful. The food and service was good. read more

The first time I went here, I was amazed. They had just open, were very busy, and my food, my husbands, and my parents was all stellar! Brought my brother-in-law and his family here a couple months later (after raving about it), and was sadly disappointed. My daughter got cold noodles and tasteless sauce. I ordered what I had previously gotten - the cajun salmon - but they forgot the main ingredient - the cajun butter and cajun seasoning! What I got was lukewarm mashed potatoes and plain broiled, tasteless salmon. I asked the waitress what was up with that, and her response was "Oh, sorry - we ran out of of the cajun and cajun butter". WHAT? This is a cajun restaurant. I ordered cajun salmon. If you are out of the main ingredient, WHY wouldn't you let me know? My brother-in-law ordered a NY Strip. He got a triangular flat piece of meat about 1/4 inch thick cooked as well done as you can get it without it being solid as a rock. When he mentioned it to the waitress, she actually said "oh I know, when I saw it go out I was like 'wait, he didn't order the meatloaf?'"...but you let it go out that way and waited 15 minutes to check on our table?! Husband and sister-in-law had the chicken fettucini, and that is the only reason for the two stars. Awesome. Everything else? For the prices, I would drive the additional 10 minutes to Maple Grove for food worth the price. read more

It's really too bad that the owners of this establishment have chosen to turn it over to poor managers. On two separate occasions I have watched the bar service working hard to keep up. One of the bartenders asked the manager for help to keep up and in both cases, believe it or not the manager said "that's what we pay you for honey!" And "you can keep up just pour faster"! While passing though Champlin this past Saturday night my wife and I stopped for dinner at Clive's, and while I would say there are some opportunities for improvement, overall we both enjoyed ourselves. The place was packed and lively, even at 5:30pm when we walked in. Luckily we found a couple nice seats at the bar and settled in. Beers were still on happy hour at that time (until 6), so we each tried a couple varieties. One of each of our beers was on the flat side, but they were still drinkable so we didn't complain. For dinner, I ordered the Cobb salad ($10) and my wife order the Cajun Walleye sandwich with waffle fries ($12). One note about the menu... it is way too big. Large menus are normally reserved for the Applebee's of the world and scream poor quality. Par it down a bit and focus on those dishes you do best. The food was nothing fancy (in accordance with their motto I suppose), but bordering on pretty darn good. I would have liked some avocado on the Cobb, but it still remained very appetizing. My wife's sandwich was very tasty and was definitely the better of the two dishes. Toward the end of our meal the place was really getting crowded, with people standing everywhere within a five foot radius of the bar. People were also getting annoyingly drunk (one group of women was perpetually screaming for everyone to take shots, shots, shots, shots... ahhh, shut the f@$k up!). Not Clive's fault but I would suggest they ask such clientele to keep it down after thirty annoying minutes (especially with children around). Clives is a place we tend to bring family and friends to when we have visitors. Generally, food is good, in fact, my husband loves their food. However, we were highly disappointed with our most recent visit in December. We had two different severs switching half way through. The first one knew nothing about the menu or specials and had to keep running to ask the manager questions. I had ordered a steak: medium well. When i fist cut open the steak my husband and our current house guest both stopped me and said "don't eat that!" That steak was so under cooked it fell short of even qualifying as rare. We sent it back- a new steak came out after everyone else was long done eating. Annoying, but this is ok with me, however, i expect an apology, discount off the tab, visit by the manager.. Clive's is always a good bet. For years we went every Tuesday for trivia. Staff is friendly, and they're always willing to seat us somewhere near the trivia host - which is crucial. The food is typically amazing, and I usually get the roast half chicken or whiskey blue salad. Both are awesome. They have free popcorn and pull tabs, and even have mini donuts on the menu! A true Minnesotan touch. So why not 5 stars? Beware the daily special, lest they run low on ingredients - they had a pulled pork sandwich once, but had run very low on the pork, so they basically sold me an onion sandwich. I would have appreciated being told that they'd run out, as there are plenty of other great options on the menu. Also, a friend of mine ordered chicken quesadillas once, and found a bone in the chicken! On both of these occasions, it was brought to someone's attention, but we weren't offered any discount or incentive. Bummer. Overall - worth checking out! read more
