The Clock has been here for over forty years. Longer than most marriages. Longer, certainly, than the one my parents had, which lasted closer to thirty years and ended, according to my father, because of a disagreement about a sectional sofa. I think about that sometimes. I think about it now, pulling into the parking lot, because there is something about a place that has simply endured that feels like a rebuke to everything that hasn't. Inside, locals from near and nearer move through the dining room, shaking hands with people who have been eating here for years. Years. I can't keep a houseplant alive for six months, and these people have been coming back, reliably, to this same place, to order the same food, for years. Chili cheeseburger after chili cheeseburger that creates a sense of togetherness and, at times, heart attacks. There's something almost painful about that kind of loyalty. Or maybe I'm just projecting. I find myself staring at the alternating layers of patty, chili, cheese, and I think onions for a moment before eating, the way you might stare at a word you've written too many times until it stops looking like a word. It is good. It is genuinely, embarrassingly good, in the way that things are good when they have not been overthought. And it was delicious in spite of health value. If you're eating at The Clock for health value, I direct you to the salads with prejudice. The menu runs from salads, to tacos, to hot dogs to a meat and three (or for those in Greer, a meat and four), which is not a range you encounter often in a single establishment. It is the culinary equivalent of a man who says he can fix anything. You are skeptical, and then you watch him fix the thing, and you don't know whether to be impressed or slightly ashamed of your own limitations. Ask anyone around town and they'll tell you about roller skating car hops, late night gatherings after high school games, real ice cream milkshakes. Nobody tells you stories like that about a place they didn't love. They're not telling you about the food. They're telling you about who they were when they ate it. I order the sweet tea. It arrives cold and correct. I'm certain my dentist has a handshake agreement with Jimmy that both will keep each other in business a long time. I will come back here, but not as often as I should. Omg I thought all the food places in Greer was bad until I finally stopped here! Every time I go by they are literally always packed! We went today almost walked out thinking there was no seats and an employee stopped us and showed us there was more seats available and I'm so glad she did. It was our first time being there (I've ate at other clocks but was not impressed) the service was excellent we got our drinks right away she was patient with us taking our time to order lol it was kinda hard to choose. Everything was DELICIOUS like very very very delicious! This place is Very very very highly recommended!! And you get great portions of everything. My plate is pictured. I am sure happy that my wife and I got to eat lunch here, as we many times are in town for hockey games and we are not keen on sports bars, which are plentiful in Greer. The Clock is a very large diner, American-style and Southern Style to boot. Wonderful menu which is a book. Specials are printed for each day. You can take-away, and their counter is fully ready to handle and fill your orders. However, dining in is a treat. Melinda was our server and she is a joy to watch as she hustles about waiting on her tables. All business and accommodating. You ask, she gets. She deserves a hefty tip. I was hungry enough to go for the Albert Burger, all 8 ounces of it, along with the slaw and fries. It is a load on a bun, so suggest you doctor your Albert with condiments and then cut it in half. You will still have to wash your hands again, but you will manage it better. Wife had a Calabash Chicken Salad, in fact, an HUGE Calabash CHEF and chicken Salad. She attacked it and barely left a dent in it. The Calabash title refers to the very light dressing/coating on the fried chicken pieces. Southern classics are a normal part of the menu. Go get it. The blue plate special is the meat-n-three. For that don't git it, it means a protein/meal with three sides and corn bread or roll. I chuckle just typing it into this review. All good stuff, done with good folks in a clean place. Parking is plentiful and prices are very reasonable. We had plenty to eat and looking around, the portions were generous. Lots of burger eaters there with us. The kitchen moves food out quickly and it is amazing that they can keep track and assemble all those menu choices. Friendly and business-like atmosphere. I have traveled to a great many small towns in the USA for business. Always looking for the Mom/Pop independently owned establishments and rarely eat at chains unless absolutely necessary. This place would be rated at the bottom of my list. Fries barely warm, place is a mess and quite frankly next time I want a burger it will be somewhere else. The food was so good! We had to wait a while but it was well worth it. My favorite thing was the onion rings, I wished I had a HUGE plate of them right now!! What a wide variety on the menu...I think there's something for everyone. Our toddler ate every bite of her gill cheese n fries. She's picky so it must have been good lol. He had the hamburger steak and didn't complain. I had the marinated chicken. It looked good but was dry dry tough dry. The wait staff were engaged in gossipy conversation loud enough for everyone to hear and paying little attention to their booths. Alright Greer, it's time to give credit where it's due. Simply stated, the Clock on Poinsett Street is one of the finest diner-style meat-n-threes anywhere in the entire Upstate. I've covered a lot of ground and stared down the barrel of many a hot country meal, and I would unreservedly place this Clock restaurant in my top 5 Upstate meat-n-threes. Before you raise an eyebrow at me, I'll make an obvious concession. Yes, Clock is a restaurant chain, and usually that does not bode well for positive feedback from me since I'm a staunch supporter of local mom-n-pop shops. If you're like me, you'll be wary of trusting a chain restaurant with your $7 of lunch money. You are very wise...but you're gonna be blown away like I was. In addition to doing the typical burgers and diner fare very well, this particular staff and management are employing the services of cooks who are doing country cooking right, my friends. We're talkin about collard greens and green beans that taste like MEAT, meaning somebody back in that kitchen is wielding bacon and a hambone like a flavor ninja. This same countrified ninja also knows how to make some deliciously creamy, cheesy macaroni that's the perfect texture and consistency - it has the optimum coefficient of friction to offer that stick-to-your-ribs sensation when it's sliding down your gullet. I reserve this particular commendation for its own paragraph, for it is perhaps the most precious jewel in the crown. I must ask - nay, I must beg - that you please order the fried catfish filets. I have had similar experiences that I liken to my discovery of the catfish at the Clock - learning to ride a bike on my own, hitting a buzzer beater to win a big game, watching a virtuoso pianist perform Chopin etudes, meeting my wife for the first time, etc. There is a magical moment awaiting your encounter with these mesmerizing morsels, friends. The fry batter is perfect, the fish is cooked perfectly, the flavor and texture and temperature are perfect. This caliber of fried seafood prowess is rare, even among coastal fish fry joints or inland fish camps. You will have lived wisely and richly having partaken of this true glory - please do it soon and often. A great country-fried epiphany awaits you, folks. For a diner, this is definitely good diner food. Had the patty melt and it was a simple classic. Asked for no cole slaw and just onion rings and the plate came LOADED with the rings! Very nice. Hubs had chili dog that he said was okay...not a quality hot dog, but overall with the chili and onions, it was good. This was a neat little experience. The feel of the restaurant is super casual and friendly. It was crazy busy when I went with co-workers around noon on a Wed. The waitress could not have been nicer or more accommodating! She was awesome! Service was really fast and the food was good. I had the Baby Club Sandwich, which was okay. Not bad, not awesome. My co-worker had the marinated chicken plate and he said it was amazing so the next time I go, that's what I'm getting! No complaints about this place.
