My experience with Closets by Design has been outstanding. From my first call to set up an appointment, to my meeting with Jordan, the designer and finally the expert installation. This project was in my garage. I had a wall of cabinets put in to avail me of some much needed storage. They are beautiful, functional and have more storage space than I will ever need. The installers were professional and perfectionists and my garage now looks beautiful with this addition. I woke up one morning and couldn't open my closet door. After I pushed it open, I found a section of the 20 year old closet system had collapsed and all of my clothes were on the floor. Based on a recommendation from a friend, I contacted Closets by Design. In a few days, a designer, Kathy Cappas came to my home and worked with me to design a new closet system to better accommodate my clothes. They were able to schedule installation within a week or so. Competitors told me it would take 6 weeks or more to get installation. A young man came within 15 minutes of the appointment time, removed what was left of the old system and installed the new system. The price, while not cheap, was within range of the competition. All in all, I got a good product and excellent service. I would definitely recommend Closets by Design. read more

Firstly, what a waste of 3 hours. And the sales person (Katherine) was disrespectful, rude, sharp, snappish, ungracious, and unmannerly. Here are some example quotes from Katherine: 1. "Maybe your husband should get a bigger wallet." (Referring to our concerns with their pricing). 2. "Maybe you should go to Home Depot for your closets." (Referring to the way she designed our front entrance closet - it was something we did not like). 3. "Didn't you know what things should cost since you built your whole house?" 4. "Why do you need copies of what I created since you are not going to use us?" (My wife has ask for copies of the quote and design and she refused to provide us with them.) *There where more but I don't have the time to write them all out. Secondly, if you are willing to go through a sales process (like the ones trying to sell you a time share to get free Disney tickets) then pass this company over. It is a complete waste of time and is meant to try and close a sale on the first visit. They should really think about revamping this process as it is outdated in 2019. Lastly, regarding the price and installation, they wanted to charge 13k for the basic installation tier and that's with the 40% discount. And basic is: White-chocolate color for master and basic white for everything else and no soft close drawers, zero extras. So at this point I told her not to waste her time pricing out the higher levels or go through the sales process any longer. Additionally, since our master closet has an air exchange in the floor I asked if they can somehow cut some slits in the wood to let the air out and she said no. Their solution was to have a shelf above it and air would just come out. Well, if you call yourself a design company then at least design esthetically pleasing solutions and not tell the customer to hire a carpenter to do it. read more

I had closets put in my home on Friday 2/16/18 that were done incorrectly and very cheaply done. I paid alot of money for this and I tried calling customer service 7 times and know one will call me back. I had the TOP DESIGNER (as she told me several times) on Friday night at 7:45pm telling me she had to go out of town and then harassed me via text message until 11pm on Friday night. My closets are not done and my home is upside down with unfinished closets. Also, left sawdust all over my yard and old material with nails in it thrown all over my basement.I DO NOT RECOMMEND this company at all. read more

A week ago, we had Closets by Design, come to our home in Rockford Illinois, to install cabinetry in a new walkin closet. Everything seemed fine until the installer was getting to the completion, then letting us know some areas of the cabinetry was not cut to the proper dimensions. Not only did the installer say there was a quality control problem, but also stated we would not believe how much Closets by Design pays me to drive to Rockford and install this...just seemed like he was bragging about it. We expected the work to be be completed in the next couple of days as our check was cashed. A week went by and we heard nothing from Closets by Design. Finally we had to call them which is a Friday today, and we told them we would like to have this installed today, but the manager told us soonest would be Monday. He did not mention why we had to call them to complete the job and not the other way around...poor customer service. They work for us, we shouldn't have had to call to get them to finish their job. Although I used C by D previously it was a number of years ago. I will say, I am happy they have maintained the same level of service! From the designer that I met with to review my needs to the installers, all were professional, knowledgable and so easy to collaborate! The beginning of our experience was great- Mary, the designer, was personable, knowledgeable and patient. We lived working with her so much we asked her back to design more closet solutions for our new home. Unfortunately, the actual installation process was frustrating and exhausting. First, we had to wait over a month for an appointment. In other words, we couldn't have closets before we moved in. Then, they wanted to remeasure a week before. They sent a guy who was more interested in talking about himself than paying attention to what he was doing. The next day, my husband got a call that the guy "lost his notes" and they wanted to send someone again!! My husband did it himself. Finally, the Friday before our installation, we were called with a window of 9 to 11. I relocated my computer so I could work and we waited... Sometime after 10, they called to say they weren't coming until between 11:30 and 12:30. At about noon, we got notice from the bank that Closets by Design took the second half of the payment. This was before they even installed anything! One guy finally came at 12:40 p. m. We were actually expecting two people, since we had six closets to do. The guy was here for seven hours and finished 4 closets. Before he was even finished, we got a call saying someone to would be back the next day to complete the other two closets. We had no choice on the time. We had been told it would be a one day job, with two people and it turned into a two day odyssey. The other thing they don't warn you about is the horrible smelling glues they use. The two guys finished the two closets in about an hour. However, the smell is really bad and we have to open all windows. I am worried these are toxic, VOCs now in my house. Overall, this has been a very disappointing experience. read more

I am reviewing the Addison location of Closets by Design. At a glance advice: Go somewhere else, don't think about... run! Long Story: In October we had someone come out and give us a basic design for our laundry room. Install was one month out. The day arrives and the installer comes out at 1:00 p.m. around 5 he tells us he cannot install that he cannot find studs. That he would need to anchor, but he didn't bring any. He had taken down our wire racks so everything was in the hallway and kitchen of our condo. He left all of the material in our hallway, said they would call to reschedule. This was Nov. 17. The next install date was Dec. 3rd. I asked if there was anything sooner, they guy said they would check, I call the next day and the rep in customer service was in the hospital. (which of course, I'm sorry to hear), but then someone else calls me back and says Dec. 10th. I said what happen with Dec. 3rd. Well he didn't hold it for me, and pretty much "you should have taken it", and take Dec. 10th or lose it. Okay, so I took Dec. 10th. I get a confirmation call on the 9th, and we are all set. Around 11 a.m. on the 10th, I get a call saying that they couldn't come because one of the cabinets/piece of material they were bringing and was damaged and "we can't send that". I said didn't you know before? Why didn't someone check knowing I waiting a month after the original install date! Also, all the material is at my house!! Nope, there is a piece that you need and it's broken so you have to wait till Monday. So we had to take a day off of work to do this. Anyhow, basically too bad no install, but they can come Monday. When the installer arrived Monday, I asked where the material was? The one that was needed and the reason they didn't install on Saturday. Just as expected!! There was no other piece, all that was bull!! Lies!! My laundry room was full of holes, just like the picture of one of the other people above, where the 1st installer was looking for studs. They did not patch any of the holes. None, just put the cabinets IN STUDS, on top of the holes. (yes the studs the 1st installer said he couldn't find). Sloppy sloppy!!! It looks okay, but I am bothered knowing that the holes were not patched. But at least it's done. Oh yes Joleine, offered me $50 gift card after the first delay. And now I was offered another $50 gift card, but this does not make up for the fact that none of this was necessary. 1. First installer did not know what he was doing. He damaged the wall, he said it could not be installed in the studs, and was there several hours before telling us he couldn't do it. He left all the material in our hallway. We didn't say not to because we were expecting an install within the next week, not the next MONTH!!! 2. No Thanksgiving at our house, none of my usual gatherings for the in December, Because of all the material piled in my hallway, and everything from my laundry room in the kitchen because the 1st guy took down my shelves. 3. Not being able to set up an appointment for 1 month after the installer was not able to complete the job because he couldn't find studs. 4. Lies about damaged part and cancelling my install when the damaged part was not needed for my install. 5. 2nd installer installed the items in the STUDS. No anchors needed. The entire experience was very stressful and disappointing. I was very angry about it. Lots of run around. Poor customer service, and never patching the holes like the rep said they would do. The cabinets are nice, but the entire experience is terrible, and no one should have to wait so long, and get terrible customer service. read more

I had an appointment booked for multiple closet designs (7) and the designer failed to show up. 30 minutes after my appointment time, I contacted closets by design who mentioned she had an emergency and couldn't make it. I understand emergencies happen but having taken off of work to accommodate this appointment I would expect advance notice or notification from closets by design, not a no call no show. They offered to reschedule me for next available (several weeks out) and did not seem apologetic or offered to compensate me for my time. Go somewhere else more reliable, it's not worth dealing with the headache and lack of customer service, if this is their first impression I can't imagine dealing with them for install etc. read more

Great customer service! I had a clear expectation of the work and was scheduled so I wouldn't miss my work trip in the afternoon. Once the tech arrived he did a great job. He called ahead to tell me he was running late and made sure I under stood what he was doing and asked me questions about the set up as well so it would look the way I wanted. This is not a professional company; please don't be deceived by the pictures! I got the closets installed, and I am very disappointed in how they carried out this task: 1) During the first in-person meeting, the salesperson did not show and as a result the company offered $100 off at the next meeting, but it was not honored as it couldn't be combined with any other offers. 2) The salesperson is pushy and will make a fake call to the manager to get you a lower price; it's just a gimmick to convince you. Unfortunately, we fell for it! 3) The salesperson incorrectly measured the distance between walls, and as a result, there is a gap between the closet board and our wall. It looks very unprofessional, and there is no fix to this issue despite the fact we spent thousands of dollars! 4) Here is the kicker: the installation person hurt himself because he wasn't wearing gloves. We had asked him to wear gloves but he had simply refused. We found his blood all over our closet, carpet, and the ladder that we let him borrow. See some of the pics attached with this review. I came in direct contact his blood and was disgusted and concern about risks of infectious diseases. I called the customer services manager (Jennifer) the next day and her response, in her exact words, to these issues, "so, what do you want from us?" She was very rude and then never followed up. I called on a biweekly basis to see if they can come back and get the wall issue fixed but I kept getting a different response each time. The issue was escalated to Ed (VP at the company) who assured us that things would get fixed in the next few weeks. There was no a response for almost three weeks, and then I found out that both Jennifer and Ed had left the company. Then I had to start all over again and explain the issues to a new manager (Larry). Over a period of two months, he helped get someone to take a look at the problem and then offered to put a piece of wood between the wall and closet board - a very cheap, unprofessional, and a dirty solution to the problem. I didn't receive any assurance regarding the infectious disease concern since I came in direct contact with the blood, a payment for the cleaning services (we had hired a cleaning lady to come and clean the blood stains). Here is the last email from the manager: "Did this cleaning lady clean your whole house? Or just the spots where he bled? Based on the pictures that you originally showed me, It is hard to believe that anything other than spot cleaning was necessary. That should not cost $150." I am not sure if the manager understood that we took a picture of the blood only where we saw the blood. There were so many other spots that we had missed hence we had to get a cleaner to clean the place. I am sure the manager himself would have done the same if he was in my position. In short, please do not use this company as provides the worst customer service and improper installation. We had a great experience with Closets by Design. The old wire unit in our walk in closet fell down and we were in a hurry to reestablish order so I called Closets by Design and Lisa came to the house right away. She was friendly and easy to talk to. The price was in line with other estimates we had gotten so we decided to go with them. The only caveat is that they make you decide while the rep is there in order to get the discounts that are offered. I wasn't real thrilled about that, but the fact that we needed something done right away and the price was right, made me choose to go with them. We were able to get on the schedule the following week. The install was fast and done beautifully. I would definitely call them again. If Kathryn is your designer run as fast as you possibly can to cancel your order. This company is horrible, it took them roughly 6 trips to install three closets in my house. All the installers and the head of customer service (oxymoron!) both admitted that they had messed up big time but still wouldn't make it right in the end. They are non responsive when trying to resolve issues - everything is run by the "owner" who will never get on the phone with you and is out of the office basically all the time. The worst. Made my appointment over the phone they were very accommodating to schedule for us right away told him that I found out about them through a mailing solicitation we were interested in having our garage fit it with storage units ,however on the day of the appointment nobody showed up when I called they said that there must have been an error that I wasn't in there system even though I had talked directly to the same person that took my call the second time they had absolutely no record of it which cost me a day out of work and a lot of aggravation needless to say I won't be using Closets By Design there are a lot of local companies that do the same thing read more

My review is based on a re-install because my shelving fell down 2 1/2 years after my Laundry Room was renovated. My issue is with with one of the workers. I am high risk for Covid and was very clear with my instructions that workers were supposed to keep their masks on the entire time they were at my home. The orders were confirmed. One of the workers, Matt Vick, removed his mask, because apparently the customer and their health does not matter to him. I immediately call the service manager, Paul, who talked to Matt, but Matt has a real attitude and has no concern for other people. I wasn't impressed by Closet By Design. They installed some shoe shelves for me in my mud room but there was a gap between the surface of the shelf and the tile on the wall above. The sales girl who did the measurement never answered the phone after she took my payment and when I called their office they said they would send someone to check but it has been a year now and no one ever showed up or contacted me. Closets by Design is the only company to consider for custom closets. Everything is excellent with Closets by Design from the design expertise, their pricing, their service and their flexibility. I moved my mom from a home to a small senior living apartment and my Closets by Design designer thought of so many ways to make the most of the space. I wanted to surprise my mom with the new closets pre-move and so they shifted their schedule to accommodate mine. I cannot recommend them highly enough. read more

Don't EVER, use this company. We worked with them for over 3 MONTHS to get our closet installed. Melissa was our designer, lovely and prompt and easy to work with. 5 weeks later, after some scheduling issues, we were promised their best installer due to the issues. Nope! They sent Eric on his first install. Told they'd be here from 1-4pm but showed up at 8am. As Eric was almost finished installing, we realized it was 12" depth instead of the 14" we wanted. We called the company to discuss, and realized during a design change, Melissa had copied over the wrong depth (designs are hand-drawn, not digitized), and we signed the papers. We missed the error, so okay. The closet was not done, and we had issues with the closet, but had to wait weeks for a manager to come out. He no-showed-called in sick but no one told us and we waited another couple of weeks for someone else. (Through this process there were ~6-8 times I was told they would call and never did.) Next, were told a senior installer would fix the closet between 1-4pm. No one showed, we called, and told we were never on the schedule. 4:30 Paul calls and says he's coming to look at the closet and take new measurements. Paul was polite, respectful, and agreed that our closet install made no sense. (I.E., our walls are not level and told a filler would correct the difference. Thought the filler would be slanted to correct for the difference-no, it was just a 2nd piece correcting nothing and took up space. Screws securing the pieces were placed where hanging rods should go, trim was cut too far, screw holes in a shelves, etc.) Paul said he would turn in the new measurements and corrections and someone will call tomorrow. We asked if he was sure and he said "Oh, definitely." NO CALL! We are close to their office and in a fit of rage, I drove over 10 minutes before close. I spoke with the owner, Brian Berendsen. He seemed ready for the interaction and to concede but was abrasive, didn't want to listen, and wouldn't let me talk. At this point, I just wanted to let him know all of what we had gone through. In fact, the owner offered 50% off, but I turned it down since all I wanted was to make a point and have our closet installed correctly. He promised we would get a new closet installed, at the 14" depth we should have had, and Ryan, their best installer, would put it in. Fast forward - THERE ARE NO WORDS FOR INSTALL DAY. Instead of Ryan, Eric - our original, the newest installer - shows up. He has no record of anything, no new measurements and no notes except for the original design. Eric was thrown to the wolves. The owner, Brian, had given me his phone number if there were any issues, so I called. He calls back and says he never promised he would send Ryan, which is infuriating as it is a blatant lie, and then says that he was out of town and someone must have changed the scheduling. Brian then says he can have a senior installer tomorrow, but my wife and I are not home. He says to let Eric put the closet in and to have a little faith. I say "okay" and hang up in frustration. We decide to move forward as very few issues have to do with Eric. (He is a kind, patient man and deserves to be working for a better company.) While we're discussing w/ Eric the problems we would like corrected, the owner calls us again. The FIRST THING HE SAYS is to tell US that it is unprofessional to hang up on someone. AS IF ANYTHING ABOUT THIS COMPANY HAS BEEN PROFESSIONAL! He then says he's going to have a senior installer out in an hour to help, BUT told us in his foul mouthed language - I cursed once or twice out of frustration; Brian did so repeatedly with both s- and f- words. And he tells us, the customers, that we're unprofessional?! Paul showed up and he & Eric did a good job installing our closet and did so quickly. Paul was a bit agitated and rushed, but it didn't affect his work. Do not use Closets By Design. The end product is great, but it is SO not worth the hassle! read more

Let me start by saying that Jon (installer) is a GREAT credit to the company. He came to my home to install two custom reach in closets and immediately realized the designer had not taken the correct measurements; some panels were too short, others were too wide; the designer had failed to account for the placement of my light fixtures; and, the accent top shelf (ATS) was too big. He worked with me to explain the situation to management, and was able to obtain and install the correct parts promptly. I am very grateful to him for his diligence, attention to detail, and commitment to customer satisfaction. He is everything that the company as a whole should aspire to be. I found Yvette (customer service rep) to be helpful in correcting the mistakes, but I felt like she did not believe me initially and I had to prove to her that I was not just being difficult; the designer really had measured everything incorrectly and was now non-responsive. Unfortunately, I CANNOT recommend Angela (designer) at all. In fact, if you decide to work with Closets by Design and you are assigned Angela as your designer, I strongly suggest you request someone else. Although she is personable, she is neither competent nor professional. She failed to take correct measurements, or send documents as promised (i.e., she said she would finish the designs at home and send me a copy of the final designs later, but never actually did), and I found her to be extremely non-responsive to calls, texts, and/or emails throughout the entire process. I felt she was more focused on selling me a one-sized-fits-all solution instead of providing a truly customized design that took my needs (i.e., my desire to maximize storage space and be able to rearrange shelves/rods later as needed) and the benefits and limitations of my space into account (i.e., the fact that the top of the existing closets was wide open, and the placement of existing light fixtures, etc.). However, now that I realize all the errors she made (measurements, etc), I believe it's possible that perhaps she is not ill-intended; she just really does not have the capacity to deliver a custom design. I was disappointed that the process did not go more smoothly. And, in the end, Jon said there was one piece that needed to be cut again since the measurements were still wrong (my ATS / Accent Top Shelf). He asked me to sign forms saying job was complete but he promised to bring it back in a few days, and I went ahead and signed because I really felt like he had gone above and beyond and had earned my trust. But I never got that ATS back and I emailed Yvette several times after the fact but she was non-responsive. That was unfortunate because they came SO close to getting everything right for me-- finally. I am not sure that I would do business with this company again, and I hope I never need to. Although I communicated my concerns about Angela to the company early on, they never accommodated my request for a new designer (although they said they would send someone new, they never did). Additionally, they originally refused to honor a coupon that had been mailed to my address, saying that they had never seen such a promotion and it must have been sent to me by mistake (although it had my name and address on it). Overall, it was a very stressful experience (and unnecessarily so). If the designers were better trained, or an installer came out to double check the measurements and plans prior to delivery, and customer service was more inclined to serve customers or give us the benefit of the doubt, that would go a long way toward improving the overall experience. Unfortunately, that is not yet the case. The inconsistency in their performance is evident in the wide range of reviews, suggesting that it truly is a gamble to contract Closets by Design to do work in your home.
