UPDATE after business owner comment: I called them and they still refused to put me through to a higher up. Also, just to clarify, this is an installation for a new construction so absolutely nothing could have deter the designer from completing a correct assessment of the closets because there were literally nothing in the rooms. Also, there were other design errors of how shoe shelves are 12" deep in design and ended up being 16" deep in installation. My baseboard was torn off mistakenly and became irreplaceable. My 2nd bedroom's closet drawers were put on the wrong side which blocks the opening of the closet doors. I don't think these are MINOR mistakes caused by wrong measurements only. I had them done my master bedroom walk in closet, laundry room shelvings, hallway closet and my 2nd bedroom closet. Everything was fine even through an initial appointment with their designer Deborah, who came out to measure everything, gave me suggestions and made floor plans of the closets. Everything went down a sh*t show after that. They came to my place to install the closets for the first time on 09/12, then realized they had a wrong design (Deborah made a mistake), and paused the work until they came back the 2nd time on 10/06. At that installment, they realized the wooden boards that they brought in correspond to the closet designer (Deborah)'s drawings, but do not match with the description I was given by the designer (12" width of the shoe rack vs 16") through text, which ends up not solving the original problem I raised to the designer after the 09/12 installation. They charged me around $130 to come back for this time on 10/06, which ended up with them not completing anything..so a cost I paid for nothing. This 10/06 installation was still wrong in that they missed out two shelves for my shoe shelvings that the designer promised me, so they schedule to come back on 10/18 just to deliver the two shelves. However, I found out that the two wooden boards delivered were cut around 1-2mm too long and cannot be added to the shelf. I had to ask my personal contractor to cut them to prevent Closets by Designs to take forever to fix that for me AGAIN. Mind you, this whole process took the initial appointment of June till literally end of October. It's ridiculous. I called the office maybe more than 10 times, asking to talk to the boss, talked to Carol, etc. to ask for a refund of my last payment of $130. All I got was "we don't do refunds", offered a dinner gift card of $100 that I have absolutely no use of and refused to apologize. The timeline of taking almost half a year is also absurd. I have other similar closet works worth more than $30k that I intended to use them initially, which I also explicitly mentioned already, but definitely not now. I don't think they understand how much damage their poor customer service can do to them. read more

This was our second time using closets by design out of Addison. Last year they did our huge master closet and it turned out wonderful. So we got them back to install storage in our laundry room. Our designer both times was Larissa and she thinks of everything and is impeccable in her measurements. I was very nervous of the negative reviews posted, but both of our jobs turned out perfect. I am very happy with both spaces and the quality of their products. I've posted before and after picuters, I freed up a ton of room in my kitchen with these new shelves! read more

They designed closet organizers, which when installed, made at least 1/3 of the closet completely unusable. This was designed by their "lead" designer. The installers noticed that this was a disaster. The designer should have told us that in order for her design to work, we needed to expand the closet opening, and add an extra sliding door, but she did not. By the time everyone realized this, it was too late to do the necessary construction. About a month later, they figured out a solution that was not great, but did allow for some access. It was a big hassle to get them to give us a credit that seemed meaningful in light of the, mainly, uselessness of their design, and the big inconvenience it was to us. read more

This should have been a 5 star review. After all, the end result is quite lovely. But the journey it took me to get there cost Closets by Design some major points. I had Closets by Design and their competitor come bid on a project to create me the closet of my dreams. Closets by Design had the advantage going in as I live in an old house with lots of angles and curves and since their product is floor mounted and not wall mounted- I knew that it would work better in the space that I had. The salesperson that was assigned to me almost cost them the job from the beginning. It wasn't that she wasn't knowledgeable- she was and offered up some great ideas-it was that it was all about her. When i tried to send her the info for the down payment- it wouldn't go through that day electronically so when I said I'd mail it-she went into a panic as she "needed the money to close out her quarter". Not my problem. As the customer- it wasn't my first priority if she made her quarter or not. Who tells the customer that? Next up- she calls to confirm my installation on Thursday for the following Monday. A day later- the owner of the place calls to tell me that they don't have the wood for my project and that we have to reschedule for 3 weeks later. How could my salesperson not know this??? Again- the inconvenience was on me as i had to reschedule an electrician who was coming to set up the lights for the closet. The owner said he would make good on the inconvenience but I never heard another word from him. Finally- they forgot about a mirror and some molding and had to come back and install that. Their maintenance guy was great- but the mirror was the wrong size the first time. I called my sales person and she told me she was in a meeting and that I needed to call the office. What? What kind of a sales person says that while their person is at my house installing something??? Not only was I infuriated but the maintenance guy couldn't believe what he was hearing! The right mirror finally came. The electrician got the lights to work and I now have a closet that is amazing. But if I had to do it all over again- i wouldn't use Closets by Design. At least not this location. For what I paid to have this done, it should have been effortless. And it wasn't. read more

She is truly amazing and does a wonderful job in making sure that we have the absolute best design to meet our needs. We recently moved and had to work with a different Closets by Design franchisee due to the area we moved to. The experience was subpar and the installation was not up to the high quality and standards of the brand and what we have experienced from the Chicago North team. The owner of the Chicago North location personally came out to our home and took over the project from the other franchisee and removed parts of the installation and fixed everything to 100% of our satisfaction. The new ownership group is focused on customer service and delivering perfection. We are very satisfied now and they fixed a very bad installation job. Brooke created a beautiful, functional plan for a unused string room and converted into a gorgeous dressing room with island. The room was dormer so it required some extra thought to make it work. Because their factory is local I was able to get the dressing room and other closets installed within 3 weeks of agreeing to the design. Great Experience and Highly Recommend My wife and I met with 4 different closet system design companies and had the best experience with Closets by Design. Starting with the designer Lydia to the installer Matt, we could have not been treated better. Their pricing was very competitive, especially for a floor based (not wall mounted) built-in system. The 1st thing we liked better about Closets by Design was that the designer actually designed our closet system in our home during the 1st visit. This allowed us to make changes to the design in real time, didn't have to wait days for the design or make a second appointment to review it. Lydia took the time to understand our needs, was very patient with us and came up with the perfect design for our closet. All of the Closets by Design closet systems are custom made, which allows you to use every inch of space in your closet. Even though their systems are custom made, it only took a couple of weeks for our system to be installed. Our installer was Matt, and he did an awesome job with the installation. Beware! The entire design process is "confusing by design." It starts with the confusing discounting (40%? 10%?) Then the features are unbundled (backing? no backing?) to further conceal the true pricing. Then the rep will state the final pricing is actually a "package price," which requires contacting the office, further sticking the customer's head in the prefabricated fog. Oh, wait, not done, then there's the additional installation cost. Of course, that's not included in the other prices. It goes on, ad nauseam. Closets by Design's quote is packaged like a collateralized debt obligation. Obfuscation is a tactic used by snake oil salesmen and closet design reps. It smells as bad as a Ponzi scheme. Be prepared to hold your nose and your wallet. **Update*** Ever see a movie where the con artist picks up and leaves town denying and erasing any trace of interaction with the target? Apparently, that's Closets by Design's MO, what a horror movie. Couldn't speak to the facts so decided to deny the whole thing. Good try, not surprised. I have a copy of the deposit check I wrote CBD, copies of documents developed and emails from your representatives. With that, are you still going to try to fabricate false information? Based on your response, I'll be sure to post my review to many other social media sites with copies of documents. Horrible experience! I wish I read the reviews before I got something done by them! I am super annoyed by this company! Kim especially! She has zero customer service skills!!! So I will just start with how my closet broke for a third time, the rod just fell on the floor with all my clothes on it... so I called them to have someone come and fix it finally. Kim told me I had to wait one week for them to come! In one week Kim calls me and says that the rod color that I have is back ordered, that they don't make it anymore and I have to wait god knows how much longer..... so I asked if I could just get it fixed I don't care what color it is, she said she would call me back in 5 minutes, well that didn't happen, she called me the day of when the installers showed up to my building. I work full time so I need a heads up! But they have zero customer service skills bad quality closets and zero communication skills. Stay away! read more

We worked with Kathy Cappas as our designer. She was pleasant to work with, attentive, and responsive. This time around we designed 8 spaces. They will be finished installing this week. We installed 12 of their systems in our other home 20 years ago. Those systems have held up to the test of time beautifully. The installer showed up on time and with the proper safety equipment to ensure everyone stays healthy. The install went smoothly with the exception of a dented wall which needs to or repainted but that's to be expected from time to time. All in all the linen closet and master bedroom closet turned out fine. I would just advise the customer to make as many design plans as possible before the designer arrives. I didn't feel the designer had a vision - for the closet space as I expected - hence my advice and putting together as many concepts/designs for the closet. The designer is more like a calculator and there to check if everything will fit. And if something doesn't fit he/she does have alternatives. read more

Recently had our entire house plus laundry room done. We were extremely disappointed in the process and product. It took three days for installation in which the installers arrived around ten and left by two each day. This made us wonder why they didn't work the entire day and finish the installation in two days. We were later told that they couldn't fit all the materials for our job in the truck. We also had problems with the materials which held up the installation. The installers didn't have drawers for the office and didn't know that an ironing board was suppose to go into the laundry room. Many of the shelves were damaged and we had to point those out and request repairs or replacements. The communication both during and afterinstallation was poor. We would never recommend this company or use them again 8/9/19. Following their post, we called them. No one to talk to then and they requested we leave a message. We did and have never heard back. I was so disappointed by this company's work and customer's service. I had a drawer unit successfully installed in my walk-in closet by them a year ago,so when I decided to redo my closet I called them back. I met with a very nice woman who designed the closet but failed to tell me that they weren't responsible for damage to the walls. I take full responsibility for that as I was not smart enough to ask the question. Several weeks later a man came to install the work. I informed him he had to leave by 4:30 or I would be fined by my condo association. He was very inexperienced and should not have been allowed to work unsupervised. He didn't finish in a timely manner and I was fined. He didn't know what he was doing. Hanging bars were at a 45 degree angle, drawers didn't line up, toe bars were missing, pegs used to hold shelves were missing, my carpet was torn and had to be replaced and the walls had to be plastered and painted. This cost me over and additional $600. I called and complained and someone was sent out to check. He told me I was lucky the cabinet installed over the drawers didn't collapse as no support bars had been installed. He did what he could but didn't finished. He came back again and didn't finish. I called the company to see what was going on and they would recognize my phone and not take my calls. Approximately 20 times, I was put into voice mail and my calls were not returned. Became so frustrated that I stopped the credit card payment for the second half of the fee. They still would not take my calls. I finally left a message stating I wanted my closet finished and I was sure they wanted to get paid, so please call me back. That day a supervisor call and scheduled the work. When I said I felt I deserved a discount for all my aggravation they said they would pay the $50 fine and give me $100 off. The work was finished, not great but good enough. The bill left didn't show,the discount. I called,and the supervisor said he would take care of it. Nothing happened. After a few weeks, I called again and he told me he'd get back to me by the end of the day. That was 10 days ago and I am still waiting. They sent a letter to the credit card company saying how pleased I was with their work, a complete lie. I cannot recommend this company and plan on reporting them to the Better Business Bureau as well. Brian asked me to call him. I did and he wasn't in. I left a message and that was several weeks ago true to form, he did not call back. My next step is the Better Business Bureau. I cannot recommend this company. read more

Getting this closet project done right has been a bit of a battle. Several emails, phone calls and one in-person appointment later, we finally had our poorly installed and improperly measured closets redone. The second time around is significantly better than the first and they didn't charge us anything additional (not that we would have paid - we wouldn't have - but we didn't have to fight for it). Our house is old, we have slanted floor and walls, so we aren't looking for perfect, but dealing with those types of obstacles is why we paid a pro to handle the project. Had the closets been installed the way they are now, the first time around, I'd probably feel better about the whole thing.
