This business is sadly closing Sept -October, 2026 and moving its practice to Des Moines, WA. This is hardly convenient for those of us who live near the Kent location. Impractical at best! They have had a long time issue with staffing. Most of the reviews here dealt with the earlier clinic which did not require appointments and served on a first come, triage basis. You could wait hours just to be seen. Getting return phone calls a few years ago was a prayer event. I am now vetless for my multiple pets. I am not going to a tiny clinic across the street. The closest other vet is extremely expensive and not very close at all. I can only hope that another vet clinic opens in its place... read more

I dropped my pup off at 9 am and was told they were going to clean another dogs teeth before getting my pup in. They were cutting my pup's Dew claw because he had torn it. They close at 5:30 pm. We showed up at 5:20 and was told they had not even started with my pup. Our option was to go to their other location 6 days in the future OR for them to do the procedure. WHAT? My pup was in pain! Why would I want to wait? Having the nail hanging on it could have become more infected. We went back at 7:30 PM to get my pup. No text, No phone call. Why even schedule us? My pup was in a cage all day with no food. If I could put a -5 review I would. I asked for all my pets records, and I will not go back. Vet Edwatds and the Clinics manager was the WORST and unprofessional. read more

We have taken our dog here for several years now. On the day before New Years, I took him there as he had been choking and was coughing a lot. They told me that they were closing early, and the vet refused to see him. They wouldn't even take a quick look at him. My dog died an hour later. It is sad how this location has gone down hill. The vets are great, but their office staff are less than helpful, the lack of response is ridiculous, the lack of communication is frustrating and their overall attitude is poor. They don't carry flea medications and make you order on line which again is delayed because they don't approve the order in a timely manner. The medications never show but still charge you which was $165.00. Their office won't help resolve the issue even though they force you to use the online prescription service. I originally brought my dog here for his dental cleaning since they were running a special price (pre-COVID). He came out of sedation quite woozy and was swaying in the car all the way home. Fast forward to his most recent visit. I made him an appointment to re-establish care since is primary vet is out of state. He just had labs drawn a month prior but the clinic asked me if I was willing to redo all his labs for over $300! No way. The vet herself was also new to the system and struggled with the computer and prices for what she wanted to order. After some discussion I got a urine analysis which was the same as my home tests. Ultimately I left the visit unsatisfied. Maybe it was because I have more faith and trust in my dog's original vet. Dodged a nightmare! Main points: - Overcharges for meds by 4X normal price - Long waiting time (you may wait for 2 hours without knowing what is going on) - Will try to pull as many of your dog's teeth when not necessary for a quick buck. - Not affordable - They lie about the current standing health of your animal to upsell you on unnecessary procedures My girlfriend and I brought our beloved dog, Shout, to Afford A Vet for a normal tooth cleaning. We had to pay for a mandatory checkup. At this checkup, they overcharged basic pet meds by 4X of what they're sold on Chewy. From that checkup, I spent $170 to get told we should schedule for dental cleaning & a box of pills that cost $12 that I should have bought elsewhere. I was then told would have to pay an additional estimated $1,700 for his dental work in a month. They said he would have to get around 10 teeth pulled!! Over the span of that month, we felt like terrible owners even though our dog was very happy. We went to Mission Vet Clinic in Kent to get a second opinion and the total was $350 with no teeth needing to be pulled, and no mandatory checkup scam. His teeth are very healthy! Save yourself the headache and DO NOT bring your animal here. They will try to exploit the sentimental attachments you have with your animal & permanently alter their appearance for a huge profit! Afford A Vet is a scam of a practice, and should not be in business; I'll never bring my dog or any future pet there again. So, as I scroll through the previous reviews, I'm a bit surprised to read the negative comments. I've been here a few times for our family dog, and now, for two of our kittens... and I gotta say... I have had nothing but great customer service. We came here, on potentially one of the Familia's saddest day, and had to put our beloved Thunder down. They staff was so gracious, understanding, and comforting. They allowed us time to grieve, with no pressure or hurry. They explained the process in detail and made sure we knew everything that they were doing all along the way. For that alone, I'm in full gratitude for their service. Since then, we have returned a couple of times for our kittens, and they've handled them with care and expertise. Never once did I see or hear any "rude" service from anyone, in the private rooms or in the lobby. Although, this place may not be a favorite of our fur babies, they've definitely earned our business and respect. The prices are decent, and I'm sure in comparison to other veterinary clinics, cheaper by most standards... but more importantly... their service has been great! I have no issues recommending this clinic to my family and friends. So... with that said... when your little companions are happy, they make you Happy! read more

Afford-A-Vet is not only very affordable but the staff are very professional, polite, and caring to your babies! I've taken my baby corgi, Bella here since i first got her at seven weeks, and now she's a healthy nine months old. I absolutely love coming here because the staff are warm welcoming and adore Bella! It makes me feel at ease when it's time to visit and i can put my trust in them. Today, I brought Bella to get spayed and the receptionist and veterinarian were very kind and thorough with explaining the procedure and price estimates. After leaving her there for seven hours I came back to the staff not wanting her to leave because they love and adore her! I was very glad the surgery went well considering she was in heat. I only hope that afford-a-vet gets an upgrade! More rooms for more furbabies, comfortable chairs in the waiting room, and just expanding their building! I only had one ok experience when i went during busy hours for Bella's vaccine shots and had to stand in the waiting room (because it was so packed) for about 45 minutes. We've had a cat for the past decade or so, and I never knew how important these folks have been until recently. I am now preparing this cat for a huge move. Although the cat had an understandable case of nerves on the trip over there, Dr. K and her second-in-command nurse were very helpful during the examination, answering any of my questions thrown their way. not only that,, but the pricing to get the cat's two shots updated was actually quite reasonable. Over the last 2 weeks we spent over $500 for stomach issues for our 2 dogs (the runs!!). I made another appointment for a non-related issue, and due to traffic was a little late. I waited at the receptionist desk for approx 10 minutes. When the receptionist came back, her only words were that I was 15 minutes late, and would incur a fee, or I could reschedule. First, I wasn't more than 15 minutes late, I was checked in late because the receptionist was in the back socializing or eating. I wasn't in the mood, and left it alone, but I had never been met with such a smug person in my life. I felt as if she was happy I was late and could charge me. Never had a problem with the vets, but this is my second time dealing with a rude receptionist here. Alexandra is her name. One more thing while I'm venting...what's up with this place? I have been taking my babies here for about 4 years. Two Yorkie's and two shiba Inu's. I have always had a great experience. I see a lot of negative comments and to be very honest honest, the only issues I've ever had here were in regards to Saturdays (walk in day). After learning my lesson 1 time, I've always made sure to come early in the weekend and I've never had an issue since then. They have a new head veterinarian Carol that took over in June, I absolutely love her!! She is so kind and informative, she definitely has a bed side manner that the previous lacked. She has seen all 4 of my babies and even squeezed 2 kittens in on a fully booked day, just to make sure they were healthy. The staff are all friendly and fun as well. **STAY AWAY** How this place has 3 stars is beyond me. Came in because my Pit had a swollen leg. They tried to scare us claiming it could be a tumor, ran multiple tests, kept her all day long and still had no valid reports. Dr. Sutherland Charged us $1000 for this. Then still wanted us to come back for more tests for an estimate of $600+ and still might not be able to find anything. We had changed the phone numbers to the appropriate party and they decided to call other parties instead. Then they went on to say that we were playing phone tag with them and that it is quite time consuming that they have to call ALL of the parties involved when we ended up telling them to call ONE specific number in regards to our baby girl. They are very rude and very careless. They just want to talk to people who don't know anything and will give into paying more money for them to run more and more test. They claimed to have call number given and left voicemails but I have absolutely no miss calls or voicemails from them. We had to find another vet after the way they treated us with this entire situation, Renton Vet was able to take us in the same day and give us the proper care. Stay away from here. Service has gone down hill and if you have any questions or may need to be seen sooner they just say you need to take them to urgent care. This place has surely gone under. They are CLEARLY understaffed, mismanaged and the lack of "we care" shows. We loved Dr. Austin, today we saw Sutherland and we waited for over 4 hours to be seen. We were told to get here at 9 to which we got here at 8:30 and didn't get seen till MUCH LATER. I called many times to see what the wait time was and to only find one person answer and say please hold" for over 10 Mins!! I had plenty of time to find a new vet and make a appointment else where. I didn't want to review this place because it has been great to my pets for the last 4 years. Last visit I can totally understand why I have a long 8 hours wait outside of this clinic. We waited their when they open and waited 4 hours for our turn. I spent my lunch eating in my car waiting because they couldn't give me an ETA. Then 4 hours later they told me that they have ran out of bordertella vaccine. Minutes later they called back saying they gave the shot. A few month later, they send us a reminder card to get the bordertella shot. They are so confused and now I am concerned whether my dogs got the vaccine or not. We called them and they said they cannot sell us the vaccine and we have to wait outside just like last time. I don't think I would go back for long wait there any time soon. read more

Checked in at 9:15AM. Was told the wait would be around 2 hours. Called to check my place in line at 12:15, they said 45 minutes to an hour longer. Called at 1:45, told them I needed to leave by 3 was it feasible. They said "oh, no problem you are next!" I left at 2:50 having not been seen. I had 4 kittens in the car in hot sun. Bored, anxious, hungry and thirsty. They never once offered water or mentioned that I could leave and come back. They never warned me the 3 times that I called before going in that I should prepare appropriately for a long wait. Honestly I didn't receive any care here. I walked in with my dog who needed to get his claws trimmed. (I just moved and was trying to find someone closer to my house to do Mojo's trimmings.) The lady at the front desk, was the rudest, loudest, most unprofessional receptionist I have ever experienced. I asked her about claw trimmings, and she barked at me that I should have come in sooner. (His claws are about 2 weeks overdue for a trimming, obviously not good, but not terrible.) Personally, no matter how much of a jerk the customer is, I don't speak to my potential or current customers so rudely. I felt belittled, and like a terrible pet parent, all because of 2 weeks of over grown nails. It's a walk in only clinic which lead to a pretty long wait but Dr. Sutherland went above and beyond for our Chinese Crested today. He was having a persistent cough and was breathing fast and heavy. After some x-rays, they quickly gave him medication to help. They diagnosed him with a rare heart defect that he never showed any signs of for nine years until now when it's failing. The doctor and staff were really empathetic and accommodating. We appreciated their thoroughness and compassion. Our sweet dude is feeling a bit better and we get to spend the rest of his days really spoiling him rotten. The cost was also very reasonable for everything that they did. Went to have my dog checked for a UTI and they tried to bully us into expensive x rays and procedures. Made me feel like a bad pet parent. I called the Afford-A-Vet Clinic many times and I got the answering machine every single time. I left a voicemail each time. They eventually responded to me giving me a phone number where I can text them while blaming their lack of a customer service rep on staff shortages. I would text them all of my information about my pup and still haven't heard back from them since. It's a pretty sorry business. I'm also pretty sure that they beg for financing from the nonprofit sector (pencil-whipping their numbers to justify the need for funding,etc.). I bring my baby tofu (puppy)here for her vaccines and nails clips. I always have a great experience when I come here. The staffs are really nice and welcoming.They are super nice and caring with my puppy too, always explaining to me in great details about the vaccines my puppy is getting. My puppy doesn't like getting her nails cut so they always make sure to be gentle and quick about it. I recommend coming here during a week day or Sunday morning. "Clover Shows Concern for Money above the Life of our Cat" - Brought in our 7 year old Maine Coon cat last February due to reoccurring anemia. He had been isolating, stopped eating and drinking, and his gums were white. Before the visit they said they would get the recent chart history from our other Vet, but they never did obtain it. I brought the records with me that showed a recent history of low red blood cell count about 8 months before but normalized a month later. But the Vet barely looked at it. They took his blood pressure for $40, but never gave me the results, even after calling this clinic several times. They recommended either taking him into an emergency vet clinic for a blood transfusion, which they said would cost $5,000 - $7,000, or to put him down at this visit. And she was somewhat pushy about having him put down. I told them that this cost was prohibitive, and that I didn't want to put him down right now. The Vet then asked me if there were any "religious reasons" why I would not euthanize my cat during this visit. I gave her the following reasons: I needed to talk it over with my wife, he had pulled through and lived after a similar but less severe episode of anemia (as shown on the reports that I brought in), and I preferred that euthanasia happen at our home, in the cat's environment. Another factor was that the cat did not seem to be in pain while at rest, but seemed to be in discomfort when I would pick him up. I requested 3-4 times that I be given saline to give him subcutaneously at home for hydration and comfort measures, as I had done with a previous cat that I owned. She reluctantly gave it to me. After I brought him home my wife started using a syringe to feed the cat bone broth and other nutrients such as vitamin B12 (which this Vet said would not help) and liquid iron. I also gave him the recommended amount of saline 2x a day. As the week progressed, I foresaw that I would be getting low on saline within a few days and wanted to make sure I had some on hand. Also, some of the saline leaked out of the hose one night. We ordered another bag of saline online, but they requested a Vet to sign off on it. The Vet declined and never told us. I called the Vet requesting explanation and they said they would call back but never did. So we ordered the saline again and they declined again! After several phone calls the receptionist said they would not sign off on this because I was using too much saline. Even after I tried to explain to them the situation, this was their unalterable stance. They then said I could bring the cat back in. I believe it was about the money. Saline is $10 online, but $50 at the clinic, plus another visit payment. So I eventually ran out of saline, but was hoping that he was getting enough fluid from the bone broth. I then made an appointment with our previous Vet. They gave him a blood workup and prednisone pills. This seemed to perk him up a bit. Long story short, our cat "pulled through" within about 2 1/2 weeks after our Clover Vet visit, and a few days after the visit with the other Vet clinic. Our cat Chesterton started eating and drinking on his own, his stools became normal looking, he came out from isolating and started playing, climbing, running and cuddling with us again. His gums are now pink. Today he presents as a healthy 7 year old cat. Looking back, I don't know why this Vet could not give something for his impacted bowels, a steroidal injection (which I did mention at the visit) and/or prednisone pills, and recommend what we actually did? They should have just told us, "You can try to revive him if that is your wish. There may be some chance that your cat can overcome this if you do the following: Syringe bone broth, give him vitamins and iron supplement, spend some time with him to show that you want him to live." After all, shouldn't a Vet be more about the promotion of life and the wishes of the pet owner than just saying, "you should let me put your cat down now because he is really sick"? Especially when there are no signs of pain while at rest. And the last word on this is the extremely poor communication I encountered, at least 8 cordial phone calls and/or messages with no call back for basic information that I paid for like blood pressure reading and inquiries about saline renewal. The Vet actually never spoke to me even once after the visit! The little communication I got was through the receptionist, and I don't believe my messages were always transferred. The recptionists are very helpful. I wanted to know what I could do to keep my dog comfortable until I could get in. I am so glad this office exists! Something is seriously wrong here. If you look at any of the recent reviews, it's clear this practice has lost it's mojo. They are understaffed, grossly mismanaged and the lack of care and service is inexcusable. As mentioned by others, you have to come to the clinic, then call to check in. Today, I did this and when I called, the phone rang far too long, once answered, I was asked to be placed on a "Brief" hold. After 7 minutes, the hold was anything but brief and at nearly 10 when the call was resumed, I was told (Before noon) no more appointments were being made do to emergency calls. Really, so I just drove for nearly 30 minutes to be put on a 10 minute hold to be told GO HOME! This is why appointments should be made over the phone, it would allow for appropriate staffing and less stress for everyone. If you are a minute late, you forfeit your spot and either a walk in or early appointment is taken. That serves everyone and reaffirms that the clinic is truly operating like clockwork. Many reviews praise Dr. Ashley Austin and I can concur with he pleasant demeanor. I am going to assume her departure or circumstances around it are a big reason why this place is struggling. Thanks to a fellow Yelper, I was advised she is at Animal Hospital of Maple Valley. It's a bit further out, but like most, there is nothing I wouldn't do for the health and well-being of my pet. I don't know Dr. Sutherland, but I can say with complete certainty, she is in over her head. Policy and procedure here appear to be based on a practice that is hemorrhaging and instead of realizing without customers, there is no practice, she has allowed care and compassion to take a back seat as what appears to be personal matters, complicated by Covid unravel her practice. I don't take leaving lightly, but it's been made clear to me that my time, pet and money are not concerns of this business, I should feel privileged to be seen here and my lack of patience or support is the reason why ownership is so bitter. There are far too many single star reviews for Dr. Sutherland to not take full responsibility for the collective unhappiness of clients. I just had great service. I had the staff all helping me get the right paperwork and even saved me from going 75 miles to the the state capital by doing extra research for me. Really I can't say enough good things. Every one took good care of my puppy and we felt like royalty while we were there. Truly the meaning of customer service. I used to take my family dog here all the time when he was younger and it was fine but now due to covid I don't know what happened but they're a MESS. The parking lot is full before it's even open and no one answers the phone. The clinic doesn't take appointments so calling and checking in is the only way & you obviously can't do that with the phone not working. I get you guys are extra busy but you should really try and figure out a system to get your patients in better because this was not it. read more

Would really rate 2.5 stars if I could - Their care with with my dog was just fine, the staff truly does have good care for the animals they see, as far as I can tell. Where my issue with this clinic is their pricing on the medical supplies they offer. Long story short. I was told I needed a "special" anti-itch shampoo - and 28 antibiotic pills. The shampoo through the vet clinic was around 35$ for an 8oz bottle, and the pills were around 45$. Without thinking I gladly paid because I assumed that was a fair price for the items, I understand every business needs to make a profit and im 100% for that. However what shocked me was when I got home and thought, I might need more of this shampoo - I wonder if I could get it online. Well as it turns out.. I can buy double the size of the 8oz the vet clinic bought me.. for less than 1/3 of the price (yes, that including shipping). How come a vet clinic needs to charge 5x+ the price of an item you can get online? that just seems insane to me. The pills were in the same realm of overcharging. 2x the price of the pills I could find online with shipping. Now again, I want to say that I agree with a business making a profit, that's great. but 2x on pills and 5x on shampoo? That I think I can safely say that they probably get cheaper supplies than what I can find online via buying bulk through a distributor. So I call the vet clinic.. and ask them how they justify such large upcharge on items, they had no logical response other than they charge more because of their recommendation to use such items.. isnt that what I just paid you for via the checkup and other medical checks? They even said you could have just asked what the Vet recommends and buy it yourself online, as they assume their customers dont have the ability to check online for prices. I took my senior lab mix dog to Afford-A-Vet right after Christmas to possibly have her put down. An agonizing decision I put off as long as I could. But very hard because she had a lot of life left in her, except for this slow growing tumor hanging from her butt area. She got a cut in it one stormy weekend when the power went out peeing in the dark. It was getting gnarly and gross trying to keep it from getting infected. But I knew living in a cone and me spending 24/7 nursing the wound couldn't keep going on. After examination Dr Austin thought it could be removed if her blood work came out ok. I was baffled but elated! She also saw life left in her like I did even tho she was older, somewhere between 12-14. Her confidence and caring heart and optimism was amazing. Robins blood work came out perfect except she was anemic from the blood loss thru the weeks of nursing the open wound. But she was sure that she would survive surgery and her anemia should clear up in about a week. So we went for it and they could do it right away. I went home with hope in my heart! She called me later that day to say she made it thru surgery just fine. They also cleaned her teethe while she was out. Dr Austin even took her home that night so she didn't have to be left alone. I went to pick up Robin that next day. Since then Dr Austin has called me several times to check on Robin. It's been 9 days since surgery. Robin is back to normal only better than before with that growth not hanging from her butt! She can pee and poop just fine. Her anemia is clearing up. She's one happy dog again and I am one happy owner. I call Dr Austin my Christmas Miracle! This place is not only spotless but all the staff are caring, honest, empathetic and professional. The prices are very reasonable. I used to go to an amazing vet in Astoria for years before I moved up here 5 years ago. I compare Afford-A-Vet to them and now call this place my home. I would not hesitate to have them help me with any concerns I have with any of my pets. Thank you Dr Austin and staff for giving me more time with my sweet "still spunky" Robin. You're the best! They don't make appointment who comes first get in first... I came 8 o'clock morning waiting in the parking lot . Ive at least called 20 times , no answer . The nurse came out I told her I've been waiting here for at least 1 hour an a half . Yet at least 4 - 5 people already went in . I asked to check us in and she reassured she'll let me in yet when I asked again she refused to do any sort of care for my dog and started yelling at me . Since COVID this place has turned into a shit show! You show up at 8:45 can't get anyone to answer the phone until 9:30, then you wait over 3 hours for them to call you to get your dog There has to be a better way. My dog that passed away remains were not returned to me and my dog that needed testing done we had to go back 4 times. 1st time they didn't tell me they couldn't do it on a saturday, 2nd time didn't tell me I needed an appointment, 3rd time showed up for my appointment and they weren't there, finally the 4th time she was seen. read more

Do NOT go here I've been waiting for 3 hours and I've watched every SINGLE CAR come and go before me when I checked in firs who knows if s vet will even see us in the next few hours. This has gotten ridiculous. It's my only day off and can't even get anyone to answer the phone to let me know what's going on. It's going straight to voicemail. They said she'll be back next but she's has 3 patients ahead of her when for 2 hours and it says she still has 2 patients. I'm livid. read more

I had to have my 12 year old Yorkie sent to doggie heaven and these folks were very gracious and sympathetic. The room for waiting and spending the last minutes with Max was very quiet and nicely decorated. This was a sad day for me but they made it a little easier. read more
