Nothing is open late anymore except this place..its the last of the true 24 hr diners in this hyper conservative econo world we live in. Their salad bar is open late and it is usually very good. I am a third party...I don't work for them. But I urge everyone to consider... If bergen county people won't visit these diners during their late operating hours...they will go away and I promise you this...in this economy... Never to return! Please come between 1 and 5 am when its difficult to sleep and at least have an excellent bowl of matzoh ball soup or something! They could cut hours like everyone else and then my good friends... Typical diner menu. Been here several times and I'm not going to say it's the worst food nor the best, it's average. My favorite go to meals at this place are breakfast dishes, especially the waffles with strawberries and blueberries, yum! Service is mediocre. What can I say it's a diner. Having been there in the past , i had anticipated a reasonable visit, however my last visit there was extremely subpar, VERY DISAPPOINTING. I went with my mother, wife, and daughter. We had a wheel chair, and it took a while to for them to have a table that could accommodate us, about 20 minutes, on a late evening Sat Nite. DO NOT COME HERE EXPECTING HIGHER LEVEL ENTREES TO BE OF QUALITY, SIMPLER DISHES SHOULD BE FINE. SERVICE REVIEW: The meals came out very disjointed and while one person could have finished their meal, another would not have even ordered. We ordered fine enough, our drinks, the lamb shank special+2sides w/soup, the rib eye special w/2 sides+ salad, large minestrone soup, & children fish sticks w/ fries. We ordered all at once It wasn't till after our soups were already served, then the rib eye steak (& which only came w one side at a time), that we were told that the lamb shank special was sold out . We had ordered leg of lamb instead and then after yet another 10 minutes were told that they had no lamb at all, all the meantime the remainder of the dishes have now made it to the table. We then finally ordered a salmon burger with fries as an alternate. FOOD REVIEW: SOUP: cream of mushroom and minestrone average, nothing to write home about RIB EYE STEAK W/2 SIDES (corn+Mash potatoes) and salad bar: The salad bar stands alone and seems well stocked, don't anticipate spring mix leaves here, there's nothing but an iceberg mix. Standard seeming salad bar that would be at the lower end of contending against one at Charlie Browns, or Ruby Tuesday's. it was probably the highlight of this meal. Rib eye was ordered medium rare, on the outside it seemed fine, however after cutting into it realized 2 things 1) the thickness of the steak is about 2cm thick, and 2) because it was so thin it seemed cooked on the surface, but was pretty rare after it's cut, in some parts of the steak they were at medium-well. After the first bite, it is very clear that the steak wasn't seasoned, and was very bland when cooked. The same tastelessness goes for the corn (which likely came from a frozen bag at Shop Rite), and the mash potatoes (which likely were made from powder mix in a big vat). Unfortunately this meal didn't come with any steak sauce, and a bottle CHILDREN FISH STICKS W FRIES: The highlight of this meal was that the fish was seemingly fresh. Know that this isn't going to be the finger sized Gordon's fish stick, but rather the hand sized strips of some type of white fish (talipia or white) they battered and deep fried. For my child the thickness of the fish stick was the girth of her entire hand, fries were home made and as the fish seemed freshly made. An oddly sized children, however acceptable meal. oddly they didn't offer any tartar sauce with this meal, and the only ketchup on the table was rather empty as were the ketchup bottles to the 4 surrounding tables around us. SALMON BURGER: This meal had to be ordered last after 2 of our previous attempts to order lamb were failed, about 25 minutes into our seating / meal. Unlike the steak there were no parts of raw to the burger to degree that there was also no juiciness, and was rather dry, lettuce and tomato seemed fresh (which was the highlight of this dish). As with the rest of the meat served, poorly seasoned and BLAND. No offering of tartar sauce again. The side of fries that accompanied this were extremely stale, and as with the burger a disappointment. Perhaps they thought that after being hungry from waiting for a meal that taste wouldn't matter, and that they could just serve you anything remotely reasonable. PRICING: For the above meals, had the quality of the food measured to the price charged, i would not have a problem. However for a steak that seemed more like a Steakum, and salmon burger that was dry with stale fries, I GROSSLY OVER PAID about $60 total, for SUBPAR FOOD BETTER ALTERNATES: instead of wasting our time and money on this one failed venture, we would have better been afforded going to a Ruby Tuesdays, Habit Burger, TGIF's, , or Arena diner or Heritage Diner . No doubt the places busy , but with the price you pay for the quality received, you have to wonder, Why? LASTLY TO MANAGMENT: While I had discussed this meal and pointed out the failure to the meal to the waiter, Host, and Manger, it is very clear that poor service and complaints, are something that's likely a routine occurrence at this establishment, which was the location of a former Ground Round, many moon's ago. While I would have expected a better service & quality from my past experience, it is extremely clear that that this diner lacks an internal quality control for the kitchen staff's food, and managerial service for internal operations of it's wait staff. We did not receive, amends toward the poor quality of the meal, nor rectification. This poor review is not given lightly to this diner, as it was once a highlight of the region . read more

I lived very close to this diner for a year and came here quite frequently, if only for the convenience. For all but the last visit, I'd give 2-3 stars (not sure), but the last visit sealed the deal at one star only. The quality of the food is mediocre. For the price, it's a decent value. Find the things you like on the menu, this will be a "meh" place to eat, or even a place you like if something you like turns out to be one of the few things they do well (some of their soups are pretty good). This place is convenient and the price is good. That's what it has in its favor. But the quality of food is low enough that I can't say much more than that. The service is great sometimes and not great other times, and it's more than just having a good or bad server. Once at a late night visit, it was clear there was one server working the whole restaurant, apparently, or at least an inappropriately large number of tables. She wasn't shy about saying so, either, and for me as a former food-service worker, I get it and I'm cool, but more than one other customer was overheard expressing some dismay at the service but even more at the fact that the server would complain about being short-staffed. So that right there seems like a management issue. But the real punchline to the story is when a line-cook from the back was chasing her around waving a raw chicken at her like it was a puppet. That's the kind of thing that makes me smile, because it's slapstick and makes me think maybe this is a fun workplace, but then makes me sad, because I realize that the overworked server wanted nothing to do with it. And speaking of raw chicken, here's where it gets worse.. My final visit to Coach House was another late-nighter. They were less busy and properly staffed, but virtually everything we ordered was just awful. We overheard the manager and one of the staff trying to figure out how to make an Irish coffee. They didn't figure it out. It was a green whiskey concoction with some whipped cream and coffee grounds at the bottom. It tasted worse than it sounds too. Thank goodness, though, as this overly-whiskied drink would be a lifesaver for me... As we continue this late-night disaster, I will say that the kitchen was, once again, raucous and ill-behaved. Yelling, laughing, etc. -- I'd say "great, I'm glad everyone on the night shift is having fun" (and as a former night-shifter, I'd understand), but remember the raw chicken incident? Think about what that might entail. We ordered two meals -- soup and a hamburger, hard to do wrong, they were okay, but we decided to splurge on an unnecessary appetizer. Fried calamari. The calamari was obviously prepared poorly, several pieces often clumped together and some of them apparently quite undercooked. We didn't notice this until we'd eaten some of it, and by then it was too late. Four hours later, one of us is violently sick from food poisoning. I'm fine, though. Thank goodness my stomach was full of my favorite antiseptic: whiskey. In the end, this is New Jersey. There are diners all over. I would suggest finding one with a little more attention to detail. If you want cheap and convenient, this one's okay, but they're all cheap and convenient. read more

You'll find pasta inside the cucumber container, croutons inside the tomatos, and just disgusting. I love the salad bar, and the chicken cream soap, my baby loves it too. I like that the soap are fresh and has a very good flavor, the ingredients were so fine my baby can eat it straight from the spoon. The vegetables from the salad bar are fresh, my favorite is the macaroni salad, and the hard boiled egg with bits of bacon, humm yummy. I only giving this place 3 stars because my husband did not like his burger, he said it's dry, my steak was chewy, shrimp was not big enough to be called jumbo on the menu. I may only come back for the salad, and the soup, and maybe try something else. read more

I go to this Coach House at least once per year. The service is alright, no problems experienced. Wait staff is average, not overly friendly. Prices are decent at best. Food tastes good, but I have had better. Atomsphere does not remind of so much of a diner, parking is not a issue. Will possibly return in the future. read more

Best egg salad from the salad bar I have ever had. They have really good coffee and I got great service from my waiter. The inside doesn't feel like a typical diner. It has a very homey feel to it and the eggs and home fries I got were also delicious. A great experience overall and I highly recommend this diner to anyone. read more

Just terrible. I love Jersey diners but this was a big disappointed. I dropped in for a quick lunch between appts, and ordered a shrimp salad sandwich on toast. It was served as a grilled sandwich, with lots of grease. I told the waitress, and she said "well it is toast - they just grilled it". The shrimp & celery were cut into such tiny pieces that there was no taste or texture. And to top it off, the ladies room was filthy. Will not be going back. read more

I just ate lunch there. The service was terrible and slow (my glass of water was empty for 15 minutes with the server out of sight). The recommended fried filet sandwich was one of the worst I've ever had. On top of it, my wife's vegetarian omelet had a piece of meat inside. When we informed the server, we were told that we could have $2 off our meal and a free $2 cookie. When we questioned the manager about this, telling him we were upset, he said that is the policy and he won't do anything more. Ouch! Something is going downhill at the Coach. Last evening, my wife and I stopped in for a late (9:30) dinner. I ordered perhaps the simplest item on the menu (grilled chicken) and my wife the roast beef au jus. My wife's dinner came in a thick brown gravy that was obviously not "au jus". She asked for rare and it was, at best medium. My grilled chicken arrived with 5 thin cutlets of which 2 were completely inedible - dry, hard and the other 3 had to be trimmed to find a relatively core that one could eat. When the server came by to ask how the meal was, she herself asked the question if my meal was too dry. I honestly thought the chicken was pre-cooked and then reheated, but she assured me it was prepared fresh. She did offer to replace it, but by then the damage was done and I declined her offer. In fairness, the owner deducted the cost of my meal but they did charge me $6.95 for the salad bar charge. I also never got a refill on my drink which I clearly could have used. We've been going to the Coach for many years, but recently we have noticed a clear decline in the quality of the food. This might explain why on a Saturday night the restaurant was relatively empty as compared to past years. With the high level of competition in the area, perhaps the management should take a closer look as to how the quality of their meals has changed or at least ask their clients how the meals are either by walking through the restaurant or asking the question when you pay your bill. read more

Great place for lunch!!! They have great lunch specials that include salad, your meal and desert.... On Wednesdays they have the most AWESOME Beef Barley soup.... The CoacH House is in a death spiral.I ordered a Friday night special of pepper steak and received thick slices of grey meat. Manager said it was fresh,i could not eat it ,Brought it home for my husband and he said it was old london broil disguised with peppers.So sad selling old meat not fit for a dog..Stay away from this hell hole or eat at your own risk.... read more

Sawdust in the salad bar! Really... 8pm on a Thursday and small crowd enjoying dinner. The restaurant was doing a little renovation on the bar at the time which we paid no mind to... until... the circular saw comes out and starts cutting the trim on the bar! LOUD! But worse yet the plumes of sawdust was blasting all over the salad bar, GROSS! NO ONE said anything but then I stood up and demanded to speak to management (and made a ruckus - this was unacceptable), wiped my hand across the bar and asked how they can allow this to happen. They did nothing until I stood at the lobby and told 2 other guests not to eat the salad bar because it was coated with a fine powder of sawdust. Then, the staff took all the food off the salad bar and put it in the back (finally). The end result, the restaurant waitstaff thanked me for saying something and the host and owner scowled at me as we left. No apology. Nothing. We have been coming here for 40 years and this will absolutely be the last. read more

My husband, brother in law & I had dinner at the Hackensack Coach House last night. We have always enjoyed the Union City CH, so I was awfully dissapointed. The service was really awful - we got some lovely garlic bread but no plates. It took forever for a very harried waitress to take our orders & she did not ask us what sides we wanted. We had to to call her back for that. The salad bar in Union City was better - had caeser salad. We ordered fried calamari as a table appetizer but had to ask for plates & forks & napkins repeatedly. But it was terrific. The guys had shrimp scampi over rice which they liked. I had a combo plate of sliced steak & buffalo shrimp. I ordered the steak rare & it came somewhere between well & burnt, the shrimp was definitlely not buffallo & rubbery. When I told the waitress she was very dissmisive with a "Sorry about that! Can I wrap it up for you?" Huh, inedible food??? Then we had dessert -I got the hot fudge brownie sunday- the brownie was stale. The coffee was way too strong & we were not offered a second cup. The check was thrown on the table & we were not asked if we wanted anything else. The ladies room could have used a good cleaning. read more

Went there last Saturday with my 6 year old daughter .Our second Saturday in a row,due to our amazing first visit.Server was new and very obvious about.Since I'm PRican she assumed I spoke Spanish which I do but she pushed it.Ordered two hot chocolates ,10 minutes later we received them extra hot...(obviously they were not prepared),ordered bacon and eggs for the little one and a lunch special turkey burger.When the food finally arrived,I was presented with a turkey burger with too much mysterious white cheese.It clearly stated on the menu turkey burger with lettuce and tomatoes.I asked with provolone cheese,and of course the server have me a puzzled look like if I was insane and I ended Asking for swiss.I had other servers looking out for our table and only saw the server twice.Never again will I return to this place. read more

This place is NASTY. The place was establish in 1968/78 and the bathrooms still look like it. There was left over lipstick on my cup from a previous customer. The cup also looked like they were purchased in 1978. The service was bad. The waitress was singing the whole time out loud to EVERYSONG as if it was her audition. She was rude and unprofessional. The salad bar was open but I would never eat anything uncooked there. It looked like it was crawling with insect in every hidden crack. The owner has major renovations needed. I would never eat there and I would never let anyone else I knew either. I can't imagine that the other reviews here are correct. There are other diners with similar names, so let's be sure that we are talking about the Coach House Diner on Route 4. I was there on Saturday and everything was wonderful. The Salad Bar was a "10", the Chicken Kabobs were a "10", the burger and fries were a "10", the "service was a "10", the bathrooms were clean.... and they served all 8 in our party at the exact same time. Stopped on the other day before a night out for At. Patrick's day. They offered real authentic soda bread and also had an option for st. Patrick's Day which included not only shepherd's pie but the standard corned beef and cabbage, and let me tell you, the corned beef and cabbage was moist and delicious and I would definitely recommend going there as I see it is in fact a weekly special. The service was amazing everybody was very attentive even though it was busy it and the was a little bit of a wait ,which was fine because it give us plenty of time to catch up about our day . Everyone seems in a rush with time these days it was nice to see an atmosphere where everyone was attentive to their customers while at the same time allowing them space to enjoy the meal. What happened to this place? We don't go here very often because we don't live in the area but the food just isn't as good as I remember. The service wasn't too good either. Asked a question about the chicken salad. Whether or not it has black pepper or onion in it. Instead of either knowing the answer or asking someone, the answer I received was.. get this.. 'the chef already left for the day.' What the?? If the chef left, who the heck is making the food? Ended up ordering the chicken salad anyway.. it was a mistake. It came out warm not cold. Was it sitting under a heat lamp while the rest of the food was being prepared? Ended up eating everything but the chicken salad. Waiter didn't come back for a while so I couldn't tell him about it. Also got onion rings and they are not very good diner onion rings. Small, barely any onion in them. The reason giving two stars is that my mom enjoyed her omelette. read more

The worst experience I've ever had at a Diner. Being a Jersey Girl, diners are essential, however tonight's experience required notation. Okay, it is late on a Sat night and there was a really noisy crowd in the back. But how can eggs take 25 minutes to cook? And then the order came with Bacon when it wasn't ordered and instead of offering it to me at the same price so I could enjoy hot food at the same time my friend received his food they took it back. I finally got my food but can't get the check. The restrooms were atrociously dirty. Finally we quietly complain about all this and the "manager" says :"I am only here one night a week so can't do anything about it" and charges the wrong check to our credit card - $60 for eggs. No apology and no discount. Are these folks crazy? Why go here when you could go to the Heritage Diner, Arena Diner, Route 4 Diner all within 5 mins and the list goes on.....Don't go here if you can help it. read more

My wife and I started to go back here after several years. At first, we were enjoying the food. But yesterday I ordered the sliced steak and chicken, which was described as steak and a chicken breast on the menu. I ordered the steak medium well and when it came out, the steak was over cooked and the chicken was not a chicken breast, but 2 thin chicken patties. Like something you buy in a box in bulk probably at restaurant depot. Chicken was also over cooked. My wife ordered the shrimp and pasta. That came out like a pile of noodles and a few pieces of small shrimp. It was a mess, and the pasta was also dry with a little olive oil. How can pasta be dry? It also did not include olives as described in the menu. I couldn't finish the steak or chicken because it was like eating leather. When we asked for the check waitress asked how was everything. We said dry and over cooked. She gave us 2 pieces of cake to go to make up for it, which tasted nasty when we got home so we threw it out. We never complain, even tomes when the food is so-so we will say it was good. But this time we had to tell the truth. Of course it wasn't the waitresses' fault and we also tip good, so she got a good tip. The salad bar is good though. We won't be going back again. read more

This place was the worst place I have ever gone to. The food was mediocre at best. The service was down right horrible, It started with not knowing what the difference between just a burger and the burger deluxe was and then asking each person how they wanted their burger cooked. Next, after waiting an unacceptably long time for our meals, one meal was completely wrong. Instead of simply apologizing and correcting the order she asks if my mother just wanted the burger instead. When the waitress was told no the waitress walked away muttering curses under her breath complaining that the correct meal was wanted. Empty glasses were not removed from the table. My niece took it upon herself to stack up 5 glasses and walk it over to the bussing counter just to get them out of our way. When the waitress brought a coffee refill for my mother (who was still waiting for her correct meal) it was in a disposable coffee cup and half of the hot coffee was splashed out of the coffee mug because it was poured with such anger and attitude it was unreal. BBQ was left off four of the meals that were ordered and when a food runner brought it to the table small to go containers were thrown in front the wrong people. including my mother, who still sat there without any food in front of her. As other patrons were seated around us, our waitress loudly complained not only to other patrons but to her manager who did absolutely nothing about her horrible attitude. Napkins were thrown into the middle of the table onto of the water glasses and they got soaking wet because they dropped into the water itself. I didn't finish even half my meal. The compensation for messing up the one meal, which was brought out with the wrong fries when it finally came out, was a cookie. We will never ever return to this restaurant. When I complained to the manager he just smiled and didn't even apologize for the horrible service let alone offer any discount. This was the worst dining experience of my life. The waiter didn't even know the specials or what was available to us. The food was absolutely inedible. I ordered the salad bar & chili, it was like a bowl of runny cold ketchup... The cheese didn't even melt it was disgusting and it didn't come with what was described on the menu I had to ask the waiter to bring the additional items out (sour cream, etc) My boyfriend ordered the flank steak which came out cold, unseasoned and the waiter forgot to get his side order until the food came out so the mashed potatoes he ordered came out five minutes after the steak and they were disgusting. The gravy had no flavor. "Tasted like gas station cafeteria food"- my boyfriend. He literally went to the bathroom and cried and I have only seen my boyfriend cry once during an episode of Better Call Saul. We asked for the manager and told him in no way were we paying for it. He brought us back the bill with our drinks and charged us the dinner price for the salad bars when they should have been $3.75 with the entrees... And we didn't even eat it. A note on the salad bar: first off, it's missing so many of the crucial salad bar ingredients that are normal.... cheddar cheese, olives, egg, green peppers, fresh mushrooms etc etc. The salad was HUGE leaves that were obviously cut by a very lazy person, the pickles were old and shriveled and the cucumbers were huge spears you can't navigate... Made no sense. I literally got to the car and had the poops right away (and I hadn't eaten in 17 hours so I know the culprit was my three bites of potato salad and the two bites I tried to get down of the chili before I noped the hell out if there.) I am usually super low Maintainence and easy-going but this pissed me off so bad I made a yelp account just for this review. I also saw other people send their food back while we were there. The bill before the manager changed it was $30 and after he charged us $15 which was RIDICULOUS because like I said, they then overcharged us for the salad... We paid it and left. Please for the love of God don't go there... Also my boyfriend has cooked and worked in the service industry and so we can relate to the craziness..
