Same fantastic pizza - especially the Waverly! The cheese pizza is okay but by design, isn't super exciting. My husband enjoyed the buffalo wings and the portion was a nice amount to share or eat as your meal. Service was attentive. Our food came accurately and fairly fast. I appreciated the jug of water left on the table. No issue needing anything or waiting for it. Compared to our primary location (Shelbyville Rd), this spot is much smaller. You may need to wait a few minutes for the tables to open up. We sat near the kitchen so lots of traffic - the alternative was to be fairly close to other customers. I tried the Old Louisville pizzas it is a pretty good pizza. Rewarming it up on a pizza stone crisped up the bottom soggy crust.

Excellent pizza spot (and quite good for the drinks and non-pizza options as well)! Crust is always nicely charred with a good chew, and while you can build your own, the neighborhood-named signature pies are a must-try. All of them. Well, should probably skip one with a topping you're allergic to, but otherwise no excuses. The Chef's Favorite version of the Brownsboro is one of my favorite pizzas, period--the chili honey drizzle and banana peppers give it just the right balance of mild heat and amazing flavor. Some good apps (love the meatballs), and solid selection of cocktails, beers, and wine as well. Relaxed but subtly vibrant atmosphere. The short answer is that everything was great about this place. The bathroom was clean. The dining area was clean. The menus, everything was clean! Cleanliness is next to godliness, you know? My server, Sequoia, was so warm and hospitable. And how can you not be with a dope name like that? Nodding to the nation's founders and such. Sequoia flashed a genuine smile, while making eye contact, and made sure that my dining experience was awesome. I can tell when they're faking pleasantries. Sequoia was genuinely a great server. The food? The pizza was pleasantly surprisingly superb! I say surprisingly because I tend to keep my expectations low when dining in a new restaurant (new to me, that is). The pizza was so good, I went ahead and swallowed my pride, and then swallowed the entire pizza. One slice at a time, of course. Yes, single-handedly. All 12 inches. I don't care. It was that good. A cheery pub-like ambiance that's not too noisy. We tried two kinds of pizza (the Old Louisville and the Prospect). and both were exceptionally good--I speak as a former New Yorker, so my standards are pretty high! Had a great wedge salad too. I feel like sometimes coals doesn't get the credit it deserves or it gets overlooked (guilty!), but dang every time I come here I am not disappointed. I am a big fan of a pizza crust done right, and Coals crust always hits the mark. They're always perfectly cooked, service is great, and there's a variety of excellent pizza options whether you're a classic pepperoni toppings kind of person or feeling slightly adventurous. We came here for pizza week and I'm so glad we did, because it reminded me I need to come here more! I got the St Matthews pizza - SO good!! Also, my friend is celiac and they have gluten free crust options, which is MEGA bonus points in my book! Coal's is one of the go-to places for date night for my wife and I. We absolutely love the pizza and staff at Coal's. I couldn't really nail down a specific visit where we have had a bad experience and we have eaten at the Middletown location at least 20 times. I highly recommend the Butchertown if you are a meat pizza sort of person. The one thing I will say is that if you are doing the keto, Atkin's, paleo, or any other version of low carb, the cauliflower crust pizza at Coal's is one of the best I have ever eaten. I've had some bad ones, but their crust is about as good as you are going to find for a faux crust option. Well done Coal's and keep doing what you are doing. Service was phenomenal from beginning to end -- we arrived at 7 pm on a Tuesday evening, the place was full. The hostess was direct in letting us know the wait could be awhile. We appreciated that and since we were still waiting on our friend to arrive, knowing he'd be a bit late, we opted to wait. The bartender helps us while we waited. Upon being seated the server was friendly and prompt. All around great service! The food arrived fairly quick -- makes sense they're just pizzas. We got the crescent hill and Seneca. Both were good, we preferred the Seneca for the amount of vegetables (just a personal preference). Their crust is actually edible; my partner does not typically like crust especially if too doughy. My husband went there and had their gluten free pizza. He said it was a premade schaar crust. If not it tasted gross like a schaar crust. He said it was baked well and the toppings were good. Coal's artisan pizza is a pizza establishment with a few locations throughout the city of Louisville. This particular location is in the Saint Mathews portion of the city in a small shopping center off Frankfort ave. As someone who is a pizza fanatic and loves to support and check out all pizzerias in the city I hadn't actually been to a coals yet until the other night. Reason being is I'm not a huge gourmet pizza or as I call it "fancy pizza" fan and prefer large pies instead of personal style thin 12 inch style pizzas. So despite coals having a long time foot print in the city I've always passed on them. I finally decided to give them a shot the other night when picking up my oldest daughter from practice. It was Ash Wednesday night and I had already had fish for lunch so to stick with the "no meat" stipulation I said "let's get some cheese pizza". Then I saw coals with a nearby location to her practice event and thought "a gourmet pizza may give us plenty of non meat pizza choices". So off we went. This particular location has a very lovely patio area. And despite being the beginning of March we actually had 70 degree temps. So on This daddy/daughter date I let my daughter make the choice of indoor or patio dining. She chose patio. So we took a seat outside. The inside was actually kinda smaller but had a nice low light vibe and upscale looking full scale bar. After getting situated outside we decided to place an appetizer order for a Herb and Cheese Flatbread. We both decided on two pizzas to try and share. All the pizzas are named after neighborhoods and communities in the city of Lousiville. We went with the St. Mathews (ironic considering that's where this location is) and a Anchorage pizza. The St Mathews pizza is just a plain ole Margherita pizza with cheese and basil. The Anchorage pizza is a lobster with cream sauce pizza. The flatbread came out rather quickly as did the pizza. Actually they came out almost at same exact time. The flatbread app was very tasty. Had a great cheese flavor and the oven cooked crust was top notch. Had some grease but not too much. Just enough to make it good. The St. Mathews pizza was pretty good. Not the best Margherita pizza I've had but definitely suffice. Sauce had nice flavor. The Anchorage pizza was phenomenal. Very good pizza that had fresh tasting lobster and a flavorful and great cream sauce. I had every intention of just trying one slice of that and sticking with my flatbread app and St. Mathews pizza for my main course. But me and her ended up splitting the Anchorage pizza evenly and finishing it in one sitting. The rest of the Margherita pizza and flatbread made for a nice lunch the following day. Overall it's a shame I hesitated for so long on this place. Very good pizza with good service and a nice vibe. I was shocked by how much I enjoyed Coals. I was expecting pretty plain pizza. The night we came, there was quite literally a line out the door. We were lucky enough to be seated quickly. Drinks promptly followed. The cocktails we ordered were subpar. I definitely recommend a beer. We started with arancini, like fried cheese balls. On their own, they lack flavor. Just a ball of texture. Add some marinara dipping sauce, red pepper flakes and Parm and you get an appetizer with eating. However, I don't want to have to do that much work to make my food enjoyable. The pizza was delightful. The crust was delicious. It could use more of the sauce which was fabulous. While I enjoyed Coals, there are better bargains available. The value proposition will likely deter me from a future visit. read more

Pizza place with a very surprisingly great menu. Amazing cocktails, beer, and bourbon selection. I was blown away how much it exceeded my expectations. Bartender is a nice gent who knows his craft very well. Service is a team of kickass ladies who aim to please. This is the best pizza I have ever had from a restaurant, and rivals the pizza we make in our own brick fire oven. They have more than earned their ranking as a top 50 pizza restaurant in the US. I have seen previous reviews about poor customer service and can understand where there may be frustration, especially on the weekends, as their staff is very young. We went on a weekday though and the service was fantastic. The outdoor patio is a nice setting. Just pray that no one's car alarm goes off as it is very close to the parking lot! Found this place while traveling on a family vacation. While I don't think they were happy about a large group, it was still a great experience. Stopped by yesterday after work as I had a bit of time to kill before my next stop. Beautiful weather so decided to eat outside. The bartender promptly brought menus and water & gave me ample time o decide what to order. I decided on the mushrooms appetizer and a cup of the creamy tomato basil soup and a side house salad. My voice has been 80% out for weeks (teacher laryngitis fun!) and the waiter was great with me repeating my order and pointing. He brought me a whole pitcher of water out as well, excellent service! My soup and salad came out first which was fine. The soup was amazing! In fact, I'd go back for this alone! The dude salad had a generous amount of toppings and plenty of Italian vinaigrette. The mushrooms came out hot and filled with merry cheeses and topped with crispy bread crumb topping, yum. I had half of my salad and mushrooms left to box up for today's lunch! Happy hour special is $2 off appetizers and I noticed later that hadn't reflected on my bill but the food and service was great so not a big deal. First off the pizza is great, attractive, with high quality ingredients and a great location with outside seating in an attractive courtyard. The inside is loud with a fun sports bar kind of vibe. I would have given five stars but one member of the staff was kind of a jerk. I had a group of seven including myself and there were several people who waited on as the food and drinks came out. But one individual seemed to have a problem with kids and I hate to say it, a seemingly conservative family white people. BTW some of the other staff commented on how neat and well behaved the couple of kids were that were with us. It's not as if we were loud or causing problems. When we arrived there were only a couple of people outside, we chose outside both because it was pleasant enough but also knowing we had kids they would be less disruptive than in a loud bar atmosphere inside. As the courtyard filled up it was mostly young hipsters and older people trying to be cool and clearly a more generally upper middle class or wealthy clientele. We were the only family group. None of the staff treated us any differently and I we had been to other Coals locations with family and groups before. But this one guy had a problem with us. Instead of avoiding us or asking to serve another table he kept coming over to us to glare at my adult daughter, and her kids while dropping rude, racist and or anti-family type comments. I observed him at other tables, if you were acceptable to him he treated them fine. With us he was gruff and rude. Tossing food on the table, pushed one of my seated grand children instead of going around them, no offer of excuse me, sloshing glasses when bringing out drinks, etc. He did not do that at other tables. He never once smiled at us or tried to engage civilly with us as he did at other tables. The experience was pronounced enough to make us feel mistreated if not for the professionalism of the rest of the staff it would have been a far worse review. Still I will go back, the food is great, I'll just know to ask to avoid the guy with a chip on his shoulder who has a problem serving people who did not fit his ideology. I'm being cagy about that as I don't harbor ill feelings toward anyone, but this guy was making it clear his issues were with a white family and he was making prejudicial assumptions about who we were and what we believed and vocalized it. That has no place in any business but especially a service business as a waiter and makes clear that people of any background or color can be as prejudice as anyone else. The difference is none of would ever have treated him the way he treated us. Go for the food and drink, and don't let anyone acting out interfere with a great meal, ask for another waiter instead and enjoy. read more

Tried it for the first time with an out of towner and LOVED it. had it again last week when I took ANOTHER out of towner from Pittsburgh when she was craving pizza. I got the one with ham and I believe it was the Seneca and my friend got the Saint Matthews. One caveat: I think there should be more representation of minority neighborhoods in the pizzas. You have Portland, and Iroquois, but why not rep California, Russell, Shively, Buechel, Shelby park, Toonerville, Newburg, Pleasure Ridge Park, and other neighborhoods of color? read more

I've tried a number of pizza joints in Louisville. My first pizza at the Garage Bar, baked in an Italian brick oven, has been the standard I've judged all pies again. Tonight I dined at Coals Artisan Pizza. Coals claim to fame is it coal-fired oven, the first in Kentucky. After speaking with one of the pie makers, he said the oven actually uses coal, charcoal and natural gas. It bakes at around 560 degrees. I start with a tasty IPA, followed by the Gorgonzola Wedge. For my pie, the St. Matthews is a classic Margherita pizza. What defines perfection in my book is a thin crust. My experience tonight gives the best pizza title to Coals! read more

We were really craving some wood fire pizza yesterday and Coals kept showing up my searches. It did not disappoint! The gorgonzola salad was delicious and I will definitely be having it again in the future. The Waverly pizza........WOW. Such an amazing blend of different flavors. It's definitely something worth trying. The butchertown pizza was a great pizza also (my partner loves all the meat) and he devoured almost the entire thing!! The service was great too, they were super busy, but even with that they were on top of serving customers and were all smiling ear to ear! After a long day shopping we stopped by Coals Artisan Pizza on the way back to our room. Let me tell you, best pizza my husband and I have ever ate! I got the Waverly which is what our waitress recommended and it did not disappoint what so ever! My husband got a build your own with red sauce, pepperoni, bacon, and pork belly. He said the red sauce was the best he's ever had but the pork belly was a little fatty (a risk you're always going to take with pork belly) but tasted great. The crust is on the thinner side but the flavors are out of this world. The ambiance and restaurant itself makes you feel at home and cozy.
