Pizza Lupo feels like one of those places you discover through a recommendation rather than by accident. Tucked away on Frankfort Avenue, it's a little off the beaten path, and parking can be an adventure. There's a small lot by the restaurant with overflow parking further down the hill. Somehow we managed to snag the only open space right outside the front door, which felt like winning a very specific Louisville lottery. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation and the place was already buzzing. It was packed with locals, which is usually a good sign. While our table was being bussed, three different employees checked to make sure we were being helped. We let them know we were just a little early and waiting on our table, but it spoke volumes about the attentiveness of the staff. The atmosphere is exactly what you want from a neighbourhood pizza spot: relaxed, lively, and unpretentious. The soundtrack quietly floating through the speakers was a crate-digger's delight, full of songs that have been sampled throughout hip-hop history. Hearing Lynn Collins' Think (About It) while waiting for dinner felt particularly apt following the recent passing of Rob Base. The song's iconic break became the foundation of It Takes Two, one of hip-hop's most recognisable records, and it was a nice reminder of how deeply great music connects generations. To start, we ordered the Olives & Togarashi, a bowl of Castelvetrano olives coated in a wonderfully aromatic blend of spices with notes of fennel, sesame and citrus. My son tried his first olive and was genuinely shocked by the flavour. He'll come around eventually. For the main event, we ordered three large pizzas: the DOP Margherita, the Funghi and the Original Sting. The DOP Margherita showcases imported buffalo mozzarella from Campania alongside basil and San Marzano tomatoes. The Funghi is loaded with an incredible blend of mushrooms, taleggio, pecorino cream and mozzarella. The Original Sting combines soppressata, fresh mozzarella, basil, tomato and spicy local honey in a sweet-and-savoury combination that completely works. Now, let's talk about the crust. It is perfect. Pillowy and light, yet substantial enough to give you that satisfying chew. The wood-fired oven creates just the right amount of charred bubbling around the edges. Our server offered house-made ranch and other dipping sauces for the crust, but we politely declined. This pizza doesn't need any enhancers. The balance of flavours across all three pies was exceptional. I've eaten pizza all over the world, and Pizza Lupo belongs in that conversation. It really is that good. We had a plan: sample all three pizzas and leave just enough room to split the tiramisu. Thankfully, we stuck to it. The tiramisu was fresh, light and beautifully balanced. Not overly sweet, nicely moist, with just enough espresso flavour coming through. It was the perfect finish to an outstanding meal. The service was fast without feeling rushed, friendly without feeling scripted, and genuine throughout the evening. Pizza Lupo was on our radar forever, so we finally made a reservation for date night and I'm marking it as one of my favorite pizzas Ive had in Louisville. Theyre doing wood fired Neapolitan style pizza with sourdough. It has a really amazing chewy texture. We went with the Puttanesca.. briny and tasty. Good with wine, too. We also got the Fungi with a variety of local mushrooms. We also loved the funky Caesar salad with anchovies.. i love anchovies... The space has a cool, intimate atmosphere that's great for couples or small groups, the staff is super friendly, and they've got fun merch for sale at the front. It's a bit hidden but 100% worth finding. Highly recommend, especially if you love authentic Neapolitan-style pizza. read more

Wow...a great meal!! We had terrific food and great service at the bar...we were walk ins, no reservations. We started with the meatballs and fresh made pita...delicious!! Our cocktails were on point and refreshing, as was the citrus salad. We ordered the Milk and Honey pizza with the house-made sausage...very tasty. The restaurant is warm and cozy..a great atmosphere. I will definitely make reservations next time and sit in a booth or table, but I must say I really did enjoy chatting with the bartender...he's great. The only downside here is the parking. We arrived around five on a Sunday and it still took my husband a while to find a place, especially since snow mounds were still abundant ... The food is excellent, but it's very expensive for what it offered. This is not a place to go on your own, but could be worthwhile if you plan to share a pizza. They are large enough for 2, and in that way, the price is reasonable. I went with friends and everyone ordered their own pizza. I wish there was a cheaper single option. My siblings & I came here for an early birthday dinner. We were honestly all impressed. The pizza was delicious. It had the perfect crisp & char. Very fresh ingredients. Tonight we got the sting like a bee pizza but we will without a doubt be back to try other ones. My sister & I loved the braised cabbage. The chili oil crunch was chef's kiss. So glad we got that. (If you like cabbage) it was subtle yet still so flavorful. Their ranch was also really good! It takes a lot to get five stars out of me, but this spot has it all - nooks cozy for dining as a couple as well as families and groups, bartender who knows her stuff (food AND bevvies, even some music recommendations, too), but of course the food. I sampled and was delighted on all counts. This Caesar salad is special, with a mix of arugula and frisée dressed in a very lightly salted anchovy dressing topped with a soft-boiled egg - traditional and artful! The Milk & Honey pizza was my pick (thank you Nina) with a signature sourdough wood-fired crust that's chewy, toasty, crisp, and crunchy in all the right places with rich cream and house-made mozzarella contrasted with hot honey and fresh basil. The crust has the perfect chew and such a great fresh flavor. One pizza shared filled both of us up and we have 2 pieces left to look forward to tomorrow. This is one of my favorite pizza places in Louisville. It's nice that Lupo still exists. I remember attending a Yelp event here years ago. I've made it in a few times since. During the last visit, it was an early date dinner before heading to the Botanical Gardens for the holiday light events. Everyone coming in seemed to know everyone so I'm not sure if this has turned into a neighborhood spot or the regulars are plentiful. We didn't make reservations. We planned to arrive when they opened and didn't think it'd be a problem. We arrived promptly when they opened and the place was already full. The attendant told us they had an open table but they had a reservation not long from then(I think they said 1 hour away.) I said that'd easily give us enough time. As it turns out, we arrived at 5, ordered, ate, and were out by around 5:35. With that, I'd suggest making a reservation so that you know you have a place to eat. We honestly cut it really close(and I don't like doing that to myself or to a restaurant). We stuck with water and ordered the Sting Like a Bee pizza(we added sausage). It was the perfect meal before our holiday lights event. At times, I think the server was surprised that we were too easy lol. She checked on us, refilled our water, and didn't leave us sitting when we were ready to go. It seems like prices have gone up but they aren't outrageous. The pizzas seemed larger than my last visit so it likely equals out. I'd consider this easily a date night place. The building. The staff. The pizza and toppings. The atmosphere. It all seems like you're paying for a quality experience. I do think Lupo has hit that sweet spot to provide everything you'd want in a pizza dinner experience. We have plenty of pizza spots spread across the city, but Lupo is a step above every single one of those places. They have other dishes(pasta, salads, etc), but for me, it's a pizza date night spot. Wine can also be had if you need that with your meal. I'm glad that more things are popping up in the area of Lupo(Gardens, Big Four Bridge activities, Soccer stadium is close by). Lupo is my favorite neopolitan style pizza place in the city. The pizza "wolf" exudes cool attitude from its unique Butchertown "wrong side of the flood wall" location to its cozy interior that makes it feel like the best shirt of old neighborhood haunt to grab a pie with friends, or as often in my case to sit at the small bar where everyone maybe knows your name and if not strangers sometimes quickly become friends. Should you get invited to a pizza party at Lupo you should always say yes and ask questions never. It will be a great time. read more

Great spot for a date or a quiet, classy moment after work. I've had the pizza, and it was delicious, but do you know what I love to order most at Pizza Lupo?? The pasta!! Their pasta is home-made and so delicious. I had the Pesto Canestri. This dish consists of: semolina pasta shells, garlic pesto, whipped ricotta, a fava beans. It reminded me of my mom's pasta fagioli but with pesto. As I was sipping it with a gin cocktail (gin, grapefruit, lemon, and white creme de cacao), I noticed the pasta had citrus notes as well (this drink and dish pairing was amazing! My cocktail made the pasta sing, I swear...). Only to notice lemon or orange zest whipped into the ricotta. So delicious. Beautiful atmosphere. Cool servers. Pizza Lupo... rave reviews all over the place! But for me? The pizza didn't do a whole lot for me and I (and the rest of our party) left a bit disappointed based on what I've heard. Maybe it's a style thing, much like a controversial pizza blogger that claims Neapolitan starts at a 6.8? My favorite thing we ordered was the meatball appetizer.. the pita bread it came with paired so nicely with the meatballs and sauce. If my rating was food based only, likely a 3/5 for me BUT our server was fantastic. Very attentive, friendly and everything we ordered was out quickly. Her service and the timely work of the kitchen staff bumped it to a 4 for me, plus it being locally owned is a major plus! Will I be back? I'm not sure. I think Lupo is great! I've been several times. The service is always great and I love that you can make a reservation. The Bee Sting is my favorite pie. It's the perfect savory and sweet moment. I got the meat balls and added burrata on top. I love that there's an option to add burrata to anything. The pita with the meatballs was amazing but I wouldn't order the meatballs again. Pizza Lupo is a shining star in Louisville. I ate here once before and honestly wasn't blown away, but I'm glad I saved my review and gave this place another shot. Don't let the line forming outside before opening scare you away, there's plenty of indoor, outdoor, and community seating that you likely don't need a reservation. Parking at the overflow lot across the street is easy and accessible. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the pizzas on menu, but the Sfincione with added Detroit pepperoni has been my favorite so far. One pizza will feed 2 easily with a high likelihood of taking home leftovers. The only thing I haven't been crazy about is the Caesar salad, I found it to be pretty bland and overpriced for what it was. This was my second time at Lupo and somehow it was even better than the first! The service was great as always and the atmosphere was perfect. My sister and I split a bottle of red wine that was reasonably priced and very good. We started off with the meatballs which are now a must get if I ever come again. They are delicious and pair so well with the puffy flat bread! For our mains, we got the ricotta gnudi and the zucchini mafaldine. Both were creamy and delicious but my favorite was the mafaldine. I am sad to write this because I have wanted to come here for a while. We were going to see MBD at The Caverns and figured this would be a perfect stop on the way. We ordered the Bolognese and the roasted carrots. I got a Chianti and my bf ordered the Vino Verde. The carrots came out first and were good. I would have preferred they came out with the pasta and not like an appetizer. When the pasta did come out it was cool - not even lukewarm! That was really disappointing. When our waitress came back around I told her the pasta was cold - her answer was - sorry, I'll tell the kitchen. What? No heating it up? No new pasta? Nothing off the bill? She also didn't really know anything about the wine when we asked about the whites - so we just picked one. I thought the white was good, my bf wasn't a fan. I like my Chianti. I recently had an outstanding culinary experience at Pizza Lupo. It ranks as one of the top tier places of the more than 100 establishments I have now reviewed on Yelp. I ordered two dishes, and both were outstanding: the Milk and Honey pizza as well as the pasta dish with the 3D Farm of Indiana pork shoulder that was braised that was amazing. You could tell the pasta was house made and the pizza was from a wood burning oven. I was not too hungry so did not eat a lot so I had enough for two meals later. The portion size was medium for the pasta which is good because you can get other items. The pasta dish was pricey but worth it if you are able to indulge. The very capable bartender helped me with my beverage selection. Mocktails are available plus Pizza Lupo features among the best selection of wine by the glass I have found locally (and natural and organic wines) as well as I believe the area's largest selection of amari. I will be recommending this restaurant even more to people in the future! read more

At the moment, if I could go to one place every day- to not only get away from the chaos of my noisy, dual-personality step-sister (who was predicted to be the ugly bane of my existence during my 40's by my father), but to enjoy an amazing meal-- and I should add- in my defense- she doesn't belong here- she forced a visit and then got stuck (in her mind)- it's very Stranger Things, actually- it would be Lupo. It is the perfect place with the best pizza I have had in a very long time. It comes complete with a hidden away location that is right out of a fairy tale, allowing me to avoid her on snowy nights by tucking into its warmly lit environment, waiting for my pizza at the bar with a glass of bourbon. The staff is friendly (and honest about its predictions when it comes to length of wait) and the pizza -though I have only eaten there twice is very good. The menu changes in summer; in winter, try the alternative to the Margherita- a pizza without mozzarella cheese, but with tomato sauce, garlic, and basil. I have heard so much good things about Lupo and finally went to try it! It didn't disappoint! There's a huge menu but I think it's better for it since it will help people who have a hard time deciding have a few good options to choose from. A lot of their pizzas are vegetarian friendly, with the options to add meat if you so choose. We picked the Funghi Pie and it was delicious. You have to get the Toum dipping sauce to go with it and it's heavenly! I can see why this is a favorite! I will definitely come back! :) By the way, you might not want to park in the limited parking spots right by the building. Went to Lupo with some friends on a Friday night. Started off with some wine which was fantastic and a Cesar salad. I will say the salad is the only thing keeping it from a 5- it was bad. The anchovies on the top somehow penetrated the entire salad. It was like the dressing was anchovy juice. We came to this place based on local recommendations from our Bourbon trip to Louisville KY, the place is in a old building felt very cozy and small however the place was quite busy. They took over 45 mins to make a pizza for dine in and when a customer ordered the wrong pizza and asked for a different one, they just took the one that was already finishing up for someone else's table and gave it to them. Which meant that table that ordered correctly had to have an even longer wait for their pizza since the manager gave it to the table that ordered wrong. Not great hospitality for the other table stuck waiting. The chairs were very uncomfortable to sit in as well and the server never once checked in on us as we were waiting. I feel like I could have sat at a different table, ordered a different pie and be writing a totally different review.
