Surprisingly good for a chain restaurant. The blue crab and rock shrimp fritters were delicious. It consisted of a savory creamy crab and shrimp mixture rolled in a tangle of noodles, fried to a crisp, and served with corn salsa and seafood cream sauce. The lobster bisque on the other hand was terrible. There were pieces of lobster in the bisque, but the flavor was off. I couldn't decipher the flavor except it was just a pool of generic orange mess. The crab cake sandwich was satisfying, with lots of crab and not much fillers (although not the jumbo lump you will find in a really high quality crab cake). The thin cut fries were served hot and crispy. We had room for desert since we split an appetizer and the sandwich. I got the chocolate waffle while the husband went for the banana pudding. The chocolate waffle was a slight twist on the standard chocolate molten cake you see in alot of the chain restaurants. My last restaurant visit in the metropolitan DC area before returning to Chicago was at Coastal Flats, per recommendation from a great friend. Big box style as usual in the DC area, but splendid in terms of flavour. From the customer service standpoint, the southern hospitality cannot be beaten. Front entry to placing your order to the attentiveness throughout the meal, Coastal Flats serves it all. This is always a high selling point. Now we get to the food. Complimentary rolls that look like doughnut holes come standard and on request with honey butter. There was also a raspberry lemonade that, with a hint of rum, went down smoothly. Then it was the plate of beef baby back ribs with fried sweet potatoes and mashes potatoes. Yes, I have a fascination with starches. But the ribs were tender and the au jus sauce made everything okay in the land. After all was said and done, there was no room for dessert, which was fine because everything else was perfect. I have so many favorites here. This is my favorite restaurant ever. From pecan crusted trout to lobster rolls, crab cakes, shrimp and grits, crab and filet mignon. This place never fails. They have the best appetizers. Deviled eggs, calamari, lobster bisque, corn and clam chowder and I can eat their bread and Ozzie rolls all day every day. I always try to come here when I'm in town. It was Friday night and I just finished putting some miles in for my marathon training and I'm starvinggggggg. I'm at home trying to figure out what to eat. I get a call from my good friend sam and he wants to meet up for dinner. He suggested we go to Tyson corner and find something to munch on. As we drove around we came to see a sign and it caused COASTAL FLATS. after a quick search we decided to try it. When we walked in we were welcomed by a really nice hostess which seated us very quick When we were at our table. Our waiter came to us so quickkkk. Ordered our drinks. This absolutely has to be the worst restaurant experience of a lifetime. I have to dine with my partner after looking at the various restaurants within this mall. My partner let to use the restroom. I was asked by the guy manager if he was in the bathroom cleaning out. I'm like huh!?!. The manager is like to do anal. I was in utter disbelief. I told my partner that we're going elsewhere to eat. This is a homophobic venue and I suggest all to stay away. There are plenty of other venues that are progressive and eclectic. I hope this place goes our of business. 1) staff was friendly from hostess to waitress. Managers came to check in on us several times to ensure we are doing good. 2) food came out delicious but it took so long. We had our appetizer and it took a while to get our entrees. Kids became impatient and we got hungrier. 3) restaurants itself was not that clean. Smelled little moist inside. I had a bad experience at a Flats related company out of town and they ended up sending me a gift card to return for a better experience. I was looking for one of their sister restaurants that was closer to home and Tyson's Coastal Flats it was. We had a much better experience. A lot of great choices throughout the expansive menu. Great American Restaurants did it again! The hubby and my brother from another mother came here for dinner on a Thursday. We were sat immediately and greeted by a server fairly immediately. I knew I wanted to drink (what a lush I am) and my hubby and brother from another mother both got water, making me really look like a lush, lol. Our drinks and bread came soon after ordering - clearly Speedy Gonzalez was working at the bar, in addition to Usain Bolt being our server. We all chatted for awhile and finally ordered, I got the Coastal Lobster Roll (it comes with grilled corn and French fries), my hubby got Hickory Grilled Chicken and my brother got salmon and mashed cauliflower (he subbed the mashed cauliflower for the mashed potatoes). This place is pretty good. While shopping in Tyson's, I wanted to try something different and was craving seafood. I honestly would give them 3.8/5 ..... here are my pros and cons: Cons: The hostess sat people before us (that arrived after we did) which annoyed my wife and the menu is limited for a seafood restaraunt. Pros: Located in the mall, our waiter (and staff) were very tentative, the waiter allowed me to order "off the menu" and they had the restaraunt decorated very nice. My go-to chain whenever I'm at the mall because the food is always consistent and so is the service. It can get busy on the weekends but you can (finally) make reservations through Resy. We really love the breads that they bring out and always ask for seconds (or thirds) while we wait for our entrees. My favorite is only on the lunch menu but if they have enough, they will make it for you at dinner if you ask. It is the Sautéed Filet Mignon Tips. It's filet tips in a creamy pasta sauce with penne. DELICIOUS! Another favorite of ours is the Blue Crab & Shrimp Fritters. This is an appetizer. The corn salsa in a creamy lobster butter sauce makes my mouth drool every time! read more

I had really high expectations for Coastal Flats but my experience was meh. The prices are high and the portions were small. I ordered the short smoked salmon which tasted good but it only came with cauliflower mash. I would've thought that it would come with another side or at least a salad to start with. My dining companion ordered the 8 Oz filet mignon and he wasn't pleased at all. He said that for $30, it wasn't anything spectacular. The bread basket was good though. Add to that, the inattentive service. Although our waitress was friendly, she passed our table several times, even stopping to pick up empty plates but never bothered to refill my friend's drink which sat empty until our food was finished and we were pretty much ready to leave. I liked the decor of Coastal Flats and the atmosphere. I'm not completely ruling out this restaurant as there are some other things on the menu I'd like to try. The customer service was good but the food was not what I expected after eating at one of there other chains. There was a lot of juices on my plate. I ordered Lump Crab Cake it came with fries and I requested broccoli. The grease from the fries was runny on the plate. The bread was amazing as the other location. I guess they have the same bread but just not the same quality of food. Sweet water was so much better then this location. I was not impressed. Maybe other things on the menu would be better. This was my second time dining at this place. Again Good was absolutely delicious. I bought a crew back with me so I got to sample different foods. The Lobster Bisque is yum yum. It's full of lobster bits. The Blue Crab Shrimp fritters was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The Devil Eggs was also a pleasant surprise. Who knew pecans worked well in deviled eggs??? The rolls are to live for (I don't speak negative lol) the beat I've ever had!!! As for entrees: the Lobster roll had plenty of Lobster. The bread it was served on super delicious but the Lobster Roll itself was ok. The Shrimp n Grits was good. Not the beat I've had. Seasoned pretry well overall. What a disappointing lunch with friends. I ordered lobster bisque which may have been good, but it was barely warm bordering on cold and not tasty and worth eating. I ordered a salad and seafood sliders off the appetizer menu for lunch - I got my salad but never got my sliders which the waitress didn't know (since she didn't check) until my friends were done eating. At that point I just had it packed to go. So out of 3 items I ended up with only the salad. I think this restaurant needs to reevaluate their runner food delivery system. A top restaurant choice for me out of the entire DMV region. Finally getting around to leaving a review, but I've dined at both locations several times over the years. I have not ordered anything that I have not liked at coastal. When I first started eating here, I would only order the grouper fingers, which are absolutely delicious for fish fingers by the way (the slaw is also really good and I'm not even a slaw type of guy). I eventually branched out and tried several other items which included the shrimp roll, shrimp n grits, veggie burger, cheeseburger, and the baby back ribs. For the sake of keeping this short, you cannot go wrong with either of the items above. I will say that the ribs are very good and I did not expect them to taste so great from a seafood restaurant! But my top two items are the shrimp roll and shrimp n grits-- just wish they the shrimp roll was a tad bit bigger. Get you some ozzie rolls, a nice drink and enjoy the awesome customer service at either location. It's not a matter of if I'll be back, it's when I'll be back. Really festive, large "mall" restaurant with a nice draft list and a wide variety of great food choices. I had the smoked salmon salad. It's a fresh grill with a delightful smoky flavor and if you like it rare, they prepare it perfectly. Do ask for the dressing on the side, as it is very sweet. For starters I always get the calamari which is always fried crispy and the jelly sauce that accompanies is the perfect pairing. A friend of mine recently introduced me to the blue crab fritters and I must say those were amazing (too bad you only get 4... call me greedy!).
