Review is for father's day brunch buffet. Having to charge the entire amount $95+20% tip (minus tax) to rsvp is ridiculous. There wasn't even enough information on what all was to be offered, nor what entree selection there would be. I reached out via social media to ask but never got a response. In a sense, you're going in blindly not knowing what to expect. I've never been here, so I figured, if it's good, I'll come back for dinner. The place is clean, modern, has clean bathroom which is always a plus. Negative is the parking situation, which is common in that area. The chair's were the most uncomfortable I've ever sat in. The back support is so low, when you lean back to feels like its going to snap your spine in half. I couldn't even lean back as a result. As for the food, it was mediocre at best. Definitely not worth anywhere near the $95 price tag. I don't eat fried foods, which made up most of the starters. The rolls were underwhelming, the nigiri was decent but there was only 4 options, shrimp, salmon, tuna, yellow tail. How many of those can you keep eating before it gets boring. The oyster's were very good. The wagyu dumpling I didn't eat due to being fried but they super gimmicky. One of those instagram foods that looks good on camera but doesn't deliver. Very disappointing experience at Modan. The prices suggest a premium dining experience, but the food simply didn't deliver. The biggest letdown was the Wagyu dumplings. For the price, they felt like a complete rip-off. The filling was underwhelming, lacked any real Wagyu flavor, and the dish was nowhere near worth what was charged. Overall, the quality of the food did not justify the high price point. I've had much better sushi and Japanese food elsewhere for significantly less money. The Flor de Cana Pineapple Mojito is interestingly on happy hour, but not on the main cocktail menu. It was okay and not that flavorful. Honestly, I wouldn't mind shelling out $20+ cocktail if it packed a punch with flavor and well-balanced. These cocktails didn't measure up. The Cauliflower Taco was truly bite-size and was the teeny tiniest taco I've ever seen. I wasn't a big fan of the flavor, so I was glad that it was gone within 2 bites. However, as a vegetarian, the options are there but limited. Here is what I ordered: - Edamame: got the non spicy version and it was good. - Cauliflower: this was too bland for my liking. I had a reservation on May 22 at 7:30 PM, and unfortunately the experience was very disappointing on several fronts. The food was delicious but poor service overshadowed my first visit to your restaurant. First, when I ordered sushi, the waiter asked if I wanted fresh wasabi. I said yes, assuming (like most customers would) that wasabi comes with sushi at no extra charge. At no point did he mention that this was a $12 add-on charge nor was it clearly listed on the menu. When I received the bill, I was surprised to see such a high charge for a very small portion. If this is a premium item, it should be clearly explained--otherwise it feels misleading. To make matters worse, I didn't even consume it. Another staff member cleared the table immediately after I finished my sushi and removed the wasabi altogether, yet I was still charged. Overall service was lacked quality as well. My partner ordered white rice with his filet mignon, but it didn't arrive until we had to ask again--by that time, he had almost finished his steak. The waiter didn't even apologize for the delay. Between the lack of price transparency, premature clearing of dishes, and inattentive service, the experience fell well below expectations. As a first-time customer, my experience was both frustrating and extremely disappointing. I hope the restaurant improves staff training, particularly around explaining additional charges and basic service etiquette. Amazing ambiance and service! The restaurant itself is beautiful, great vibes for a date or special occasion. However, the Japanese food was decent, not the best, didn't taste authentic, but more like americanized Japanese fare. You don't get a good bang for your buck either, as portion sizes are small. The chicken karaage is usually my favorite appetizer to order at Japanese restaurants, but the portion sizes here much too small, and the karaage did have a good crisp to it. But they do give a considerable amount of dipping sauce to go with it. The miso soup also had a watered down taste, the miso flavor was not as strong or bold, although I did like the tofu pieces in the soup! Sushi was fresh, flavorful, and nicely presented. I recommend the Pink Lady and Firecracker rolls. However, i'd say that the fancier items were a letdown. The wagyu dumplings tasted like cheese balls, and the 'bread' on the $42 lobster roll (which can be finished in 3 bites) tasted exactly like a vanilla wafer topped with caviar. Made a reservation on a Saturday night at 8pm at the sushi counter, and despite the heavy down pouring rain just a half hour prior, I was surprised to see the entire restaurant was full when we arrived. The restaurant is easy to find when you're driving, but when the elevators from the underground garage are out of service, it definitely makes finding your way out a little more challenging! We ended up finding our way to the street level and then making our way up the steps to the second floor to get to the restaurant entrance. Upon entering the restaurant, the lighting was slightly dim, initially suggesting an intimate and sophisticated setting, but is quickly offset by the loud music. The dinner menu is pretty self-explanatory and not as elaborate as some other sushi establishments, making the decision making process less burdensome. We shared the roasted cauliflower appetizer, which had an interesting tart and citrusy flavor from the sauce. Although the dish enhanced our dinner by adding a satisfying crunch, I'm not sure I would order it again as the tartness just didn't seem to complement the cauliflower well, and instead, overpowered the natural mild and subtly sweet flavor of the cauliflower. The salmon carpaccio, on the other hand, was very well executed. The tartness of the dressing, texture of the toppings, and freshness of the garnish paired nicely with the salmon. I was definitely impressed by this dish, and would order this again next time without hesitation. The star of our dinner was the toro caviar, which comes with 2 pieces per order. This is one of the options on the Chef's Creation menu, and consists of coarsely minced fatty tuna held together by two small pieces of crispy milk bread and topped with caviar. This was a perfect combination of crunchy and savory without any fishiness, and the fatty tuna just melts in your mouth! I was impressed, and would order seconds and thirds next time (especially if the menu is unchanged, and nothing else stands out at the time)! As for dessert, we ordered the matcha cheesecake, which is Modan's most popular dessert option. The dessert can easily be for one person, but it can also be shared between two people if you're already both full. The dessert is presented as a creamy matcha filling within a small wooden square box, topped with small pieces of crunchy, slightly sweet and savory pieces of cheesecake "crust" and a few pieces of freshly chopped strawberry and an edible flower, with a side of yuzu sorbet on top of small pieces of cheesecake "crust." Without a dessert menu that provides a description of the dessert and all of its "glory", I didn't expect to be served a deconstructed cheesecake (let alone with a side of yuzu sorbet), and maybe that's the reason for my diminished enjoyment of this dessert. I will most likely skip dessert here next time. Overall, Modan offers a nice setting for a date night, but the loud music and the mostly mediocre food options make for more to be desired. The food was disappointing. We ordered nearly everything off the apps and sashimi menus because the portions were so tiny. (I would not recommend that as our bills were higher than the rooftop.) We left wanting more. However, the dry aged sashimi was delicious. This may be a class shock but, we ordered several cocktails and noted that some of us were charged for the square ice cubes vs the round ones. On the downside, the rice in the rolls & in the chirashi bowl was overseasoned, overcooked, & mushy. A step up from grocery store sushi. The fish quality was lacking & was a strange, leathery texture. We were comped 3 different desserts, which was a pleasant surprise. Creme brulee was good, but the sugar crust on top was way too thick. Mochi icecream was delicious. The chef also gave us some little bites of cake & chocolate. Our favorite bite by far! The cake was dense but moist & had great cardamom flavor. Overall, great presentation but the food just fell flat for us & had us leaving very disappointed, especially for this price point. We were pretty excited to check this place out and wanted to love them, but Modan was quite a let down. It took a while for anyone to greet us. Once they eventually did acknowledge us, our original server stopped by to let us know someone else would be taking our table and that person stood there confusedly asking why she was being assigned our table while we continued to wait to be given drinks or have our orders taken. This haphazard service experience persisted through a Saturday night dinner visit, when we observed that while there was a live DJ, the restaurant was strikingly somewhat empty for a nice weather evening. The lollipop special sushi roll starter we had was surprisingly kind of lukewarm and fishy tasting, as were the lobster and salmon tacos. Our seaweed salad was a unique but disappointing rendition that was oddly soupy / watery. The miso black cod was overcooked and the spicy miso lamb chops were tasty, but weren't the slightest bit spicy. This was one of the most lackluster meals I've had dining out in a while and I would say the ambiance is one of the only highlights we enjoyed here. Our server advised that their signature cocktails are all made in large batches ahead at the start of the day so if they run out of one, it isn't possible to order the drink which I found to be a little disappointing for $22+ cocktails. There's a cute backdrop at the entrance for photo ops, which is on brand with this place's seeming to focus mostly on aesthetic and not on actual food and service execution. We were lured in by their boasting that one of the head chefs was formerly with Nobu, but I think it would have been better just to have gone back to nobu or Shoto where we've had consistent better experiences than this place. read more

I personally didn't taste the difference in the dry aged sushi but maybe my palate isn't refined enough. I didn't like their ginger and their wasabi wasn't very strong (was it not fresh? I barely got the sinus clearing that I usually crave). Assorted vegetable tempura was okay, hard to share especially when they say this restaurant is supposed to be 'tapas style'- I also thought the vegetables didn't have much flavor and the batter wasn't that great. The eggplant was my favorite. The spicy Karaage was really good. Nice flavor and crunch. Would get again. A few at our table got a large Tbone to share. Very nice presentation and accompaniments (loved the pickled vegetables) - I don't eat steak so can't say much about it but I think they enjoyed it. It seemed pricey to me but I think for 35oz in a restaurant, that price tag of almost $250 is pretty standard. For premium prices I expected a sophisticated experience, with friendly staff as soon as you walked in, and attentive servers that would explain each cut of fish as it came out. We got none of that. The hostesses were unprofessional and aloof (it felt like I walked into a Wendy's), it took forever to get anyone to acknowledge us when we got seated, and at the end of the meal, they mischarged us. Extremely chaotic and unorganized. The food was overpriced for how mediocre it was. The karaage was pretty tasty, but kind of burnt. The wagyu taco was disappointing, and definitely not worth $21 for the tiny snack that it is. The spicy tuna roll was good, but nothing special. I liked the king salmon nigiri, but the barracuda was chewy and had a strange leathery texture. The trevally jack was unique. Overall, there's way better sushi in the area. We left hungry, and the whole dinner experience was ruined by painfully slow service, lack of care for the customer, and food that was not executed with the level of finesse required from a place charging such absurd prices. Tried this place for the first time last night. Went with a bunch of friends. The service is great! The food is fantastic! I had the firecracker roll and the black cod. Both were excellent. We also shared some appetizers so I tried a piece of the veggie tempura and the karaage. Those were also delicious. The restaurant was pretty empty but it was Monday night. I have heard that it's normally packed. Be aware that the prices here match with the food so everything is expensive but it was probably on par for similar quality restaurants in the DC area. I wanted to love this place, but it just didn't deliver. I'm giving two stars mainly because they kindly accommodated four extra people for my large reservation, which I appreciated. However, the service and food didn't live up to expectations. Several items were forgotten, and while everything from the edamame to the wagyu dumplings, spicy tuna rice cake, lobster roll, and nigiri was fine, nothing really stood out--especially given the higher prices. It is a relatively new restaurant right across from the Archer hotel with high price & small portion. 1. Reservation: tricky Well, they have a huge bar area with super long table that can sit up to 10 people and it has always been open, so reservation is not necessary. However, the greeter is so mean and will demand you to have a reservation. Also, she demands full name and number when you are just trying to sit at the bar. Even hospitals and police stations don't demand that to enter! 2. Food: tastes okay but not good for the price point it is at. Very small portion and high price. DRINKS: $30 old fashioned? and it didn't taste good and barely covered half of the glass. It is a rip off! - clear mushroom: truly is clear. no flavor. mushroom in clear water like. - rolls: for $20, we get a small bite that was not delicious - $21 taco: very small 1 bite wagyu taco. So, beware of the price level. 3. Service: good - door girl: terrible - server: never tried any of the stuff and can't recommend anything, didn't tell us the daily specials and when we inquired he had no idea - manager: awesome! 4. ambience: nice. spacious, tall ceiling. One of your staff members -- whom I have not personally met or interacted with in a service capacity -- disclosed to my business partner how frequently I visit your restaurant, how much time I spend there, and even what I typically order or spend on. This conversation took place despite the fact that I have never been to Modan with this business partner, and I have never shared this information voluntarily. Additionally, we my business partner and I do not have any pubic posted photos together so it brings up the question, why this connection and topic is being brought up. **Why This is Concerning** High-end dining establishments thrive on discretion, professionalism, and respect for guest privacy. When staff members discuss a patron's visit history, spending habits, or personal routines with third parties -- especially those not present at the time -- it crosses a boundary of professional conduct. This type of disclosure can be perceived as gossip or judgment, and risks damaging both the guest's trust and the restaurant's reputation for discretion. **Professional & Legal Considerations** In hospitality, guest information -- including frequency of visits, spending patterns, and personal preferences -- is considered confidential. Discussing this information outside the context of providing direct service can be viewed as a breach of privacy. Decor and ambience are stunningly beautiful! It's the first thing you notice in this new modern restaurant. The staff were friendly and our waitress definitely knew the menu well as she listed a bunch of "must try" items for us. Kudos to her because yep, we liked everything she mentioned! Appetizers and entrees came out in a timely manner and everyone in the restaurant were super nice. Food was awesome -- Wagyu dumplings, Wagyu taco, salmon carpaccio, yellowtail carpaccio, miso cod, filet mignon, wagyu on hot stone and of course the lobster to make it "surf and turf". I cannot describe how delicious the wagyu taco and wagyu on hot stone were. Every bite melted and I wish I could have just another bite, and another. We all had a lychee martini and a bottle of sake and both were great for our dinner and evening. I can't wait to come back for another meal but everything I mentioned, does run up the tab pretty fast. I enjoyed every bite and it was totally worth it for me because I enjoyed all the elevated dishes, but don't be surprised with the tab if you like to indulge in all ways of wagyu! We had the Mother's Day brunch service today and it was amazing. The service was excellent as our servers were really kind and well spoken. The food was one of the best things I ever had, the sushi quality was excellent along with the other variety of foods and desserts. The restaurant's clean design, and variety of music also added to the experience. I think some songs could be switched up to fit the vibe more as there wasn't a specific theme but that's a small nitpick. Overall, the Mother's Day brunch in my opinion, would be considered a success! If Modan is going to do another Mother's Day service/buffet, I would definitely comeback. 5 stars (for the brunch) read more

Tried this Nobu sister restaurant, Modan, on a Friday night. Service 5 star with attentive cheerful and knowledgeable staff. Spacious and modern interior. Family friendly. Price is comparable to Nobu but choices are more limited including hot dishes. Tried Aged toro and salmon first time. Thumbs up on quality of sashimi and appetizers. Fun looking cocktails but pricey. Also had miso black cod and grilled salmon which had good flavor and tasted fresh. The cooked portion are considered entrees but it does not come with rice or miso soup. Also had their lava cake with marshmallow topping and Japanese shaved ice. All in all an excellent spot for special occasion because of the price. read more
