We went back every morning - and some dinner times too. When we returned to Brooklyn for another visit, this was the first place we looked for - delight to find it still serving the best pancakes, sandwiches, fries, and of course coffee. This place is an absolute delight: you feel you're eating like a local, but being treated like you're on vacation. Will be back for sure! read more

In fall of 2008, the beloved Donut House retired to its cocoon and re-emerged as what is now known as Coffee Shop - The Cobble Hill Coffee Shop, that is. No title is more befitting for an eatery that embodies and delivers the sunny morning mellowness of this South Brooklyn neighborhood (Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens). Perhaps because the ownership remained consistent after the metamorphosis, the diner exudes authenticity and belonging. Perhaps the best way to compliment a business whose chief merit is a sense of normalcy is to benchmark it against core characteristics of any place that strives to provide that down home feeling that keeps us going back, cholesterol count be damned. 1. Standards Diners MUST have sweet (waffles, hotcakes, French toast, jam, marmalade, and maybe crepes) and savory (eggs, omelets, sausages, bacon, ham, home fries or tater tots, regular sliced bread instead of artisan stuff, a boat load of butter, and possibly poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, and lox) breakfast foods served at ALL HOURS. Lunch selections MUST include burgers, melts (especially tuna), clubs, and reubens. The Coffee Shop has all this and more (paninis, eggplant parmagiana, fish & chips, Greek stuff, liver, frank 'n' beans, and even salads for the self-conscious and delusional) available from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. They take cards, too, so if the night before fleeced you of your cash, you won't go hungry. Few diners offer much more beyond uninspired omelettes, greasy pork products, and stock sandwiches with limp fries. The Coffee Shop surpasses run-of-the-mill diners with deli-level specialties and plain old favorites that are SO country that they are usually completely overlooked. I guess I'm talking about corned beef hash. Tell me one other place where they have this readily available in the city! It's delicious, with the stupefying sodium content of the canned shit but the complex flavor and texture of real food. Beverages All diners have coffee; drip all the way, often old and sludgy, but always with that special quality that calms you down and amps you up at the same time because you just have to go with what came out of the machine and it's a thrill to lose control like that when you're used to standing over Starbucks workersto make sure your espresso is made right. While this place is called the Coffee Shop, it's the farthest thing from a caffeine boutique with its artsy cups of foam. In fact, I suspected that the single option coffee was Folgers, and it WAS the best part of waking up. As for juice, normally, you'll find a $5 half pint of OJ at some fancy ass place. It comes in an anal looking vial but tastes like it's from concentrate, or straight out of a Continental Airlines cabin. Here, the worst case scenario is $3.50 for 10 to 16 ounces of orange juice, grapefruit juice, or even tomato in a big, friendly, beveled, kitchen style plastic cup. They even mixed grapefruit with orange for me. The last time I had that done by my own hand, or at some beatnik's cafe in Berkeley, so it meant a lot to me. So forget the sodas squirting out of mechanical udders at other places. Here, the juice is what's worth the squeeze. 3. Ambience The best diners tend to be unpretentious in atmosphere, right down to its bitchy (Seinfeld's soup nazi, a waitress in a diner in my hometown) or nurturing waitstaff. However, lots of diners are either downright dirty, taking the hole-in-the-wall aesthetic to the extreme. Or, they are unnaturally dolled up with inflated prices to match, piming some image like a shiny new product . The Coffee Shop strikes the perfect balance in how a diner should appear and feel. It's clean but not fancy, intimate but not gloomy, cozy but not cramped, lively but not loud, and fragrant but not odorous. The staff and benevolent owner are of the extremely friendly variety, and they're not trying to get anything out of you in exchange for good service, either. True, assholes working at a local diner can sometimes wield their own brand of charm, let's face it; it's nicer to be greeted with a smile than to fight for street cred first thing on a weekend morning from a server who hates the world, and possibly you. This is one of the top brunch places I've been to in my whole entire life. It's where I had coffee AND orange-grapefruit juice AND ice water, bacon AND hash browns, two eggs over easy on a bed of homefries AND bites of my friend's crispy waffles...essentially what you'd get in a real household when no one is too hungover or lazy to throw down and make everything at once, reaching across the table to sample one another's dishes and refill multiple cups and mugs with big pours from pitchers of nectar. When I think of dining out I hope to not be devoured by the furniture. The waiter could have been a little more attentive but it wasn't horrible just okay. I was looking for some food in the Smith street area on January 1st and I gave this old diner a try. the signs promised a great burger and the price was just $7.50 for a de luxe. it was a bit crowded due to the holiday but I did not have to wait to get the table. The waiter was prompt and courteous. I ordered a 1/2 lb burger deluxe medium rare with swiss cheese ($8.50 ) and coffee. I did not have to wait long. The coffee was great, fresh and stronger than usual diner blends. It was some Colombian medium roast way better than all those burnt tasting Italian or French dark roasts that are served at more pretentious and expensive joints (I am originally from Italy and in my native country there is no "Italian roast". Espressos taste stronger there because coffee is ground finer not roasted darker). I was happy the burger was cooked medium rare as I had asked, praise to the cookd. It was perfect, served with good fries and a generous portion of tomatoes and lettuce. I was surprised and happy to find ever a side of coleslaw on the plate! So many restaurants seem to have doubled the standard burger's price and removed coleslaw altogether. It really brought me back to places and plates I used to enjoy when I first spent time in NYC in the mid / late nineties before the Sux and the City crowd would cast a dark shadow on dining, shopping and living. I really like this diner-esque coffee shop on court street ! The interior reminds me of an old fashioned diner with the colors, the bar, and the decorations lining the walls. I've gotten the eggs both times I have been here with the home fries on the side. The eggs are very good and they put lots of toppings in omelettes. I do find it a little oily but I tend to prefer less oil than the average person. It was our waiter's first night on the job and he made that very clear. My friend wanted to know if a certain sandwich was vegetarian or not and, fine, he had to consult the other staff person but when it came out, MUCH LATER than was reasonable, it had ham in it. I had ordered a tuna BLT, which was supposed to come with fries/onion rings and almost half an hour later, I got tuna fish on bread with lettuce. I had to ask for the side of fries, which were later charged as extra, and it was a less than generous person. I asked for extra slices of tomato to put in the sandwich and it did not come with the bacon or cheese as it was described to have had, let alone the third slice of bread that all CLUB sandwiches have. The man behind the counter kindly fixed our bill to not overcharge for the tuna and the fries but we would not go back. To make things better, the man at the table next to us was clearly irritated and had to remind the waiter of his drink order and milkshake order. Then he sarcastically responded that everything was great and that they can't wait to come back. I understood how he felt though by the end of our experience there. I've ordered delivery from here a number of times and it's always great, but today was my time eating in and I feel compelled to write a review because the service was really lacking. Our server was really nice, and I don't know if he was new or what but it was super awkward. We ordered coffee and didn't get any sugar etc. When we asked for it, rather than the holder with the sweetener selection inside, he went to the counter and took just two sweet n low packets from another diner to give to us. Really strange, especially since we didn't ask for sweet n low. I had to repeat my order 4 times and point it out in the menu before he understood what I was asking for. I literally ordered something on the menu without any changes. My bacon came on top of my (vegetarian) friend's food. He seemed really confused when she asked for fresh food because the meat was touching her food, even after she explained the reason. I've walked by this place many a time but have never eaten here until brunch early this after noon. From the lettering of their sign outside to the simple counter and booth decor inside, this place just screams donut shop. Only problem is, they don't sell donuts on Sundays. "We don't have donuts today," our waiter said. "It's against the rules." I'm sure he was kidding, but I was kind of disappointed. The only donut they had on the menu was under Dessert, and they had some shrinkwrapped muffins in the display case, but this place is not the house of donuts it appears to be at first glance. C. got the French toast with sausage -- they gave her a ton of butter, and the syrup came in little plastic packets. And I got the western omelette with bacon. They forgot my bacon, so it came about midway through the meal and appeared quickly done. And I got the western plate without cheese, so the omelette was a little dry. I've been going to this diner or ordering from here for years. It's what you would expect from a diner - nothing special, but not bad. I've never really felt one way or another about it to even bother to write a review until now. Tried placing an order for delivery over the phone - the man I was speaking to was shockingly rude (usually they are so nice) and hung up on me. (I promise you, I am not difficult to deal with and there was no reason for this - I asked him a simple question!) I called back to make sure he didn't run my credit card for the order which I assumed he wasn't placing, and when I started talking he started talking over me and yelling at me. I get that everyone has bad days, but there is no excuse for this. Normally, if a place has good food/product I let that be the deciding factor in how I rate them (it would have probably been 3 stars on any other day, FYI), but after this experience I am so disgusted that I will never go back or order from them again. This is one of the worst places in the neighborhood. They are rude, deliver cold food - late and refuse to fix any issues that are their fault. I ordered an omelette - already overpriced and paid $6 for what i thought were sweet potato fries even though my omelette comes with potatoes. It then arrived late along with regular fries. I called and kindly explained that I would never order regular fries for that price when my omelette already comes with them but they refused to refund since it was "my fault." I have been a customer at this diner for over 20 years. Its ownership has changed hands at least 3 times during that span. There have been improvements along the way, especially in terms of cleanliness. But over the last couple years, it has gone downhill. The problem now, is that for a neighborhood diner, the prices are way way way too high. I don't pretend to understand all of the pressures a restaurant in New York City might face these days, in terms of making the rent and covering all of the costs. But from a customer point of view, the prices at this place are not at all in the spirit of what the place should be and essentially is: a diner. Two eggs any style with home fries and toast: $8.45 Add bacon to that: $11.45 Add turkey bacon to that: $12.45 Turkey bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich: $7.25 Tossed salad (not very good): $9.95 Gyro Sandwich: $10.95 Cheeseburger Deluxe: $13.95 Turkey Cheeseburger Deluxe: $14.95 You can go to better places in Manhattan (where I think rents are higher??) and pay less or the same for these items and they'll be better. Not that I want to do that. What I want, and what our neighborhood now needs, is an authentic affordable diner that can be a regular spot for people. Note: The food quality has declined though the soups are still good. I ordered a chicken souvlakia wrap. The chicken was not edible and if I was blindfolded, I would of assumed I was eating a sea captain's leather notebook. Not because it was interesting, it was just old. My fiancé ordered a chicken quesadilla. It happened to be quite good, but it confused the issue. My husband and I love this place - we've been coming here for a few years since moving to the neighborhood. I'm from North Jersey, and so I always appreciate a good diner. The owner, Frank, always remembers his regulars, asks how your family is doing, how your New Year is going, and always has a compliment ready for someone. It's a very inviting atmosphere. Food is good as well. I'm a fan of their Greek spinach pie, souvlaki, grilled cheese on whole wheat with tomato, and their chicken, Minestrone, and Manhattan clam chowder soups. Prices are more than reasonable for this neighborhood, and portions are often large. They'll be crowded at popular hours, such as lunch on the weekends, but they always find room to seat you, or make sure to check in with you often to let you know when a table will be available. read more

We have visited this diner several times of late, having just discovered it this last winter. We don't live near by but we have made it a destination. There are so many reasons. I guess it boils down to one at the tippy top; that being a sense of genuineness. The men there are the most transparent and gentle men. They work with diligence and serve with a quietude and a grace which is a refreshing, delight. Second ... a very close second is the goodness of the food. Everything is perfectly tasty, also expeditious, and generous! I would say more but folks might not want to read more. The service was great and the owner makes you feel very welcome! How did I skip this place for so many years? I'm upset with myself for not stopping by. I love diners and this place is exactly what I needed. Hopefully they never get pushed out by some modern American farm to table place, because a good diner deserves to stay. What you get here is undeniably what you had hoped for. This is really a diner, although a rather small one. It's not a greasy spoon though, because if it were, Id not eat there in the first place. First of all, the grey haired man with an accent who is manager, if not owner, is so warm and welcoming. You can feel, when you interact with him, that he really cares about what he is doing, and how you as the customer are experiencing your visit. Im definitely a sucker for friendly servers, especially if they're in the position of representing the place. No matter how nice a diner is, I have an OCD thing about not being able to eat lunch or dinner in one. So, Ive been here for breakfast, and Ive been many times. The prices are low and the food is good. I switch between getting pancakes and/or french toast. My signature order is pancakes with chocolate chips and banana inside them. On the couple of Sundays Ive tried to go here for brunch, there was a wait. However, the wait was short, and the aforestated grey haired worker regularly checked in on those who were waiting. He did not have a simple system for the wait, which is as simple as writing a list of names.
