The closest thing to a real high end restaurant in Lowell, but it has none of the Lowell Charm. Nothing Special and the furniture is about to fall apart. If you are over 200 pounds, be careful. Our daughter was at recent conference in Lowell and this place was right across the street from the convention center, so my wife and I decided to give it a try. At first it seemed a bit fancy with white tablecloths and nice silverware, but upon entering you could tell that the atmosphere was laid back! My wife ordered the prime rib and she loved it! It was so BIG, she could not finish. I had the steak tips and the were phenomenal. This is a Texan saying this about Northern beef!!! My favorite was the grilled watermelon salad. YES, grilled watermelon...it was superb!! Our server, who's name I forgot, was super attentive and very informative about the community. He even gave us a personal tour of the upstairs after dinner! We have been there twice now. Once just the wife and I before going to the arena for a hockey game. The second time was with a party of 6. Both times the waiter & waitress were fantastic. Just their performance alone will get us to go back again. They were very sensitive to a gluten dietary restriction and were able to find out food ingredients. There was not one complaint about the food on either visit. My only reason for the 4 stars and not five is the price. I think that the prices are just a bit on the high side. read more

Went there for the first time on a Saturday night. We don't usually go out, but decided to splurge and get a good steak. When we arrived, I ordered an espresso martini and my girlfriend ordered a glass of sangria. The drink menu makes it a point to state that the martinis are "DOUBLES," so I was expecting something large. It was the standard size, in a standard size martini glass. Nothing double about it. It also arrived at the table w/ a big chunk of ice in it! WTF! Apparently, using the bar strainer is too difficult to master. As for the taste, I rate it a 3 out of 10. It tasted like yesterday's espresso w/ a shot of vodka in it. It had a bitter note to it, like espresso has, but it was more pronounced. I've had much better. For $11, I was expecting a more pleasant experience. For an appetizer, we ordered the wild mushroom flatbread. It was good. Not an "Oh Wow!" moment, but good. That ended up being the high point of the dinner. I also ordered a garden salad with balsamic vinegrette dressing. The actual salad wasn't bad. The lettuce was crisp, the cucumbers were good, the two slices of tomato weren't mushy. The biggest letdown was the vinegrette dressing. It just fizzled. The first taste starts off good, but goes flat almost instantly. The expectation was a tang of vinegar, but it never shows up and the rest of the ingredients in the dressing get completely lost after the weak, initial start. Even the lettuce starts to overpower the dressing. Now for the main course, we both ordered the filet mingon and crab cake. I ordered mine medium rare. My date ordered hers medium. Both had bernaise sauce. I also had a side of zuchinni. She had the baked potato. When they arrived, everything was just warm. Not hot,. Warm. This included the potato, which tend to hold their heat quite well. As for the steak, the bernaise sauce was not visible. I've never had fresh bernaise sauce just melt away, but that's what this looked like it did. A bit of the tarragon flavor was there, but it looked more like tarragon butter than bernaise sauce. They also tried to fancy it up with some fresh tomato chunks. Bad choice. The acid from the tomatoes cuts through any remaining bernaise/tarragon flavor. Once I cut into the fillet, it was cooked medium to medium well. It was light pink in the center. More of a medium well in my book. Definitely not the medium rare that I had ordered. On to the seafood. The crab cake wasn't anything to write home about. It was better than those frozen pre-made excuses for a crab cake, but it was more bread and mush than crab. Definitely not on par with a real crab cake. The taste was unmemorable. As for the sides, the zucchini was wonderful. Perfectly seasoned w/ butter, salt, and a bit of pepper. Cooked enough to be soft, but with a bit of crunch as well. My girlfriend's potato was mediocre. It was hard / "al dente" in many areas, and was just warm. Also, the sour cream was just plopped on it. So overall, a letdown. The meal had no real highlights. The flatbread was good, and my zuchinni was great, but that was it. Nothing really memorable. Especially for the price. The service was less than average as well. The waitress never checked on us after the entree was served. Based on our experience, the resturant didn't live up to the reputation and expectations. read more

I had an Open Table voucher and Cobblestones is a participant so I took my 5 year old on a lunch date this summer. We sat on the casual bar side on the counter height tables and our waitress was very nice and inviting. My son had the usual chicken tenders.. he said it was fancy! He enjoyed it and I had the special that day which was some sort of steak sub which was flavorful. It was overall a good experience and good American cuisine. This is the center of history in Downtown Lowell. Place is excellent and they also opened Moonstone's in Chelmsford Ma. Both are excellent.

From the moment I walked into this restaurant I knew I was going to have a great experience here. The ambiance and decor felt very upscale yet comfortable. The staff was terrific - the greeter was very pleasant and welcoming and our waitress was efficient and delightful. The food was terrific, and for a reasonable price. There is a great selection of beers and drinks, and I particularly appreciated their decision to only serve domestic beers. The menu had a few jokes hidden in it, which added to the comfortable but still upscale feel of the place. I can't wait for the next time I'll go back! read more

Been here a few times and liked it! Sadly my last visit here was disappointing. I went for Sunday brunch, I was certainly younger amongst the crowd and that was definitely held against me as it took the waiter 20mins to greet my guest and I and bring us waters. I decided to get the fried chicken and bacon waffles, I however, do not eat bacon and asked to have it taken out. We received are food and no drink refills about an hour into our visit. No problem there I understand it was busy, I was very disappointed to see that the chicken and waffles was two fast food looking chicken tenders on top of one thin waffle. Our waiter seemed to be much more engaged with the tables around us, as we only saw him next when it was time to get the bill. I noticed we had been charged 17.99 for the 12.99 chicken and waffles. I thought it was a mistake so I brought it to the waiters attention. He told me that because I didn't want bacon he had to charge me separate for the waffle and for the chicken. I didn't understand the logic and wished that he had gave me this ridiculous explanation when I was ordering it. I asked to see the manager, and the waiter left the table for about 15min only to return and tell me that no changes will be made to the bill and that the manager was not going to come out. read more

Cobblestones is in the heart of Lowell and is always a great choice for dinner. I enjoy their asparagus a lot and a lot of the other vegetables. We always choose a different appetizer, but they're all great. For dinner the menu seems to always please whoever we dine with because all of the food is really good. After your meal, they give you a nice minty chocolate and it is the perfect way to end a nice meal. read more

I am really not fussy about service, but a recent visit to Cobblestones was the absolute worst I've experienced. They got NOTHING right and were so slow that we nearly missed a nearby event we were attending. The food order was completely wrong and came out in four or five shifts. My salmon burger was ice cold. The bill was completely wrong....I could go on and on, but you get the idea. Maybe it was an off night, but my wife told me that the last time she went the same thing happened. I urge the management to rethink your system: things will have to improve vastly for me to return. read more

Well, I was in the mood for a good burger. Ordered a bacon cheeseburger. Boy was I disappointed. It came out with 2 small strips of completely charred bacon. The lettuce was warm and wilted. Onion was minced and served in a condiment container. Small slice of warm tomato in there somewhere. Yikes. I really don't think we need to put up with cooks who have just given up. I've never written an internet review before, but I thought that my experience at Cobblestones last night was worth the effort. We went for a family celebration, and tried a number of appetizers, salads, entrees, and deserts. I have to say that they were all great, but I have to single out the raw oyster appetizer as something special, and something I would recommend. The absolute star of the show, however, was the Bacon Macaroni and Cheese. This dish was comfort food taken to the extreme, and I defy anybody to taste this and any say it was not satisfying , no matter what age. At our table we had beef, seafood, and vegetarian dishes, and then were all wonderful. I highly recommend this place, you will love the food. read more

Went out for a small company event and this was my first time there. The apps were good, awesome oyster selection to say the least. Good wait service, very attentive to our requests. The skillet of cauliflower au grautin was a good choice for the vegetable too. Food in the rest of the party was good, but I have to ask, how difficult is it to cook a Fillet medium-rare? My fillet came out well, no red present in the meat. It was a good thing that it came with a sauce or else I would have had to drink a ton of water to get it down. The last thing I'm going to do in a large party is send food that is edible back, as there were 7 others. In a smaller setting I would have sent it back in a heart beat. As one of the top items on their menu, I expected much more from this establishment. read more

I don't see myself going to Cobblestones anymore. I enjoyed the handful of times I had gone, but the last two times I had gone with my mother, we didn't receive very good service. We always split a salad before our entrees when we go out, but the last 2 times we went to Cobblestones they forgot our salads, and brought our entrees out. When we would ask about the salad we ordered, both times the waitress replied "Oh, well do you want it now?" we replied "No thanks" both times, as we already had our meals in front of us it was pointless. I am not picky with service, as I'm a pretty "easy" customer who doesn't require much attention, but I would at least like my food that I order. Going to be trying new places from now on. read more

My friend and I each ordered a lobster slider and we split the Cobbleskins. Slider had good fresh lobster but was way too small for $9. The skins were awful. Way too dry. I still will give 3 stars because I've had some good meals here. The crabcake sandwich is excellent. So are the short ribs. My group of around 15 people (11 adults and some adolescents) came here. Our service was average and our food was average but pretty expensive. The main rooms were Really loud and you had to yell to speak to someone next to you. The food variety was low, But overall my party had fun and I didn't have a bad time either. My partner and I love Cobblestones for the great food, beer selection, ambience, and service. We've eaten there many times when visiting Lowell for the annual Jack Kerouac festival. On our last visit, I inadvertently left my credit card there and two days later (when I finally figured out where I must have left it), they had it secured and waiting for me to pick it up. We had a dinner reservation for our anniversary. Worst experience there ever. Too busy, way too loud. Service terrible, wait for food more than an hour. When dinners came out - they weren't ours. 2 completely different meals than what we ordered. Waitress didn't even notice. When asked to speak to manager, she didn't get him. On our way out we found him. All he said was "I've only been manager here 3 weeks, sorry". Told him we'd never come back again. He said & did nothing. Went with the wife and kids before Mother's Day weekend to avoid the craziness usually associated around the holiday. Loved the old brick building and iron fence outside. The restaurant is lovely as you walk in with the fireplace and the old city atmosphere. The dining room felt a bit drab but would be lovely for lunch with some sunlight coming through the beautiful old windows. The service was friendly and solid all around. My wife joked that our server could be a little more subtle when pushing the wine and higher ticket items (she recommended lobster and filets) but I didn't really notice. The spinach artichoke dip was delicious! However, the buffalo chicken tenders while tasty looked messy. Most of the breading was falling off and the sauce was cold and thick. Our oysters didn't look plump, they looked mangled and meager. Almost tasted muddy. Plus we had to scoop out shards of shell floating around the meat. Not what you expect when you pay $20 for 6 small oysters as an appetizer. My wife raved about her New York strip, big, juicy and delicious. My baked haddock was dry and overcooked. It tasted too much of wine and the bread crumbs were bone dry. It really needed some butter to add something to it. My daughters mac and cheese was the best I've had. Not something I would normally think to get at a restaurant but you need to try it! My son's fish and chips were very overcooked and you could really taste the oil on the coating. The coating was super-thick and pancake like. The fries were soggy and reminded me of bad McDonalds fries. I was happy that they had a kids section where my youngest got chicken fingers. My oldest son got the scallops which were fresh but they were broken and not really browned. Seemed like he got the end pieces. Were got creme brulee and and chocolate pie for dessert. The chocolate pie seemed like it was a store bought thing but they kids liked it. The creme brulee was disappointing, the top looked nice but the filling was not. It was not a smooth creamy custard and had too much vanilla extract (although the menu said it was vanilla bean). I don't mind paying high prices for a good dining experience but Cobblestones just did not deliver. I felt I payed for a higher end restaurant but was getting chain- restaurant quality food. Service and atmosphere was there just not the food. And while it's not really a big deal, it just didn't feel right to have our server say bye to us outside the restaurant smoking up a storm with the other employees. Scott Plath was not only incredibly rude he also used inappropriate fowl language and was completely out of line.
