NOTORIETY: Local "Hole-in-the-Wall" Mexican Food Chain FOOD: Carne asada plate ($10.58 after tax): This plate comes w/ a lot of food. I've NEVER been able to finish everything by myself. It comes w/ a large, thin carne asada steak, which has been getting chewier each time I come here. The steak sits atop a bed of grilled onions. On the side, it comes w/ pretty good refried beans & soft Spanish rice. Add to that, 2 thick (flour, or corn) tortillas, shredded cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, & guac (not as flavorful as I'd like). I'm not done, it also comes w/ a bag of crispy thin tortilla chips, red sauce (watery & not that good), & green (spicy) sauce. Breakfast tacos ($1.39 before tax): You get 2 choices of fillings for these good sized tacos. I tried the crumbled sausage which was a bit on the dry side. The cubed potatoes were al dente but didn't have any additional flavor to it. The chorizo was tender but didn't have much flavor either. Chimichange: Def. diggin the fried burrito w/ cheese sauce on top. It stayed crispy for quite a while, which was good since it was taken to go. My new fav at this joint. I finally was able to get here for lunch and was disappointed. The chips were SO STALE..even after she brought a different basket they were stale so we didn't even want to eat them. Green sauce was super hot but good...I liked the hot sauce and others didn't but that's how it goes. Food was just as I ordered which was great, loved the beans. Chicken in the quesadilla was okay...didn't love it. The food wasn't really that hot and there were flies all over. Yuck. It is very basically decorated in Tex Mex style. The staff is friendly and you seat yourself. The chips and salsa are warm and pretty good, and the "green" sauce has a decent spice. Yuck! I went here with a friend that said it was so good (she usually just gets tacos). My kids ordered the burgers and said they liked them but they are teenage boys and will eat just about anything. My husband and I split some beef fajita enchiladas and there was a lot of fat and it tasted like they used the left over ends from the day. It was about an hour before closing so my guess is they just didn't want to put any effort in. I usually give places a second try but I don't think I will for this place. Everything tasted and looked like it was from a package, down to the seasonings. The tortilla chips were store bought, as were the chalupa shells, taco shells, and flour and corn tortillas. The queso tasted like cheese whiz. The red and green salsa had a somewhat handmade taste, but ultimately lacked much flavor. This could be a great place, if they took some pride in hand making the shells and chips (really ANYTHING, to be honest). I looked very hard at each of the plates on our table to try to find something that I couldn't get off of a supermarket shelf and make at home myself for 1/3 of the price (and with more flavor), but failed. I was in the area for Fire fighter school and wanted some mom and pop Mexican food. This place is it. I went with a large group and everyone was satisfied with food. Staff handled our table full of jackasses. I judge about half my experience at Mexican restaurants on the chips and salsa. They succeeded in gaining my approval. The green sauce is outstanding. The main course was solid all around. The beans and the rice were great. Next time I'm back in College Station, I will be coming back. read more

I was told that this place is awesome but after eating here I was quite disappointed. I went in and sat down and was followed by another couple. These people were older adults, and were served before me and my boyfriend, who are younger adults. It was a little rude. Once we were served out waitress forgot to bring us tortillas with our fajita meat, and forgot to give us plates. The horchata here was amazing, despite the other shortcomings. read more

I love this place and I usually eat here at least once a week, they recently raised their prices a bit (the daily special was 5.00 before) but the prices are still decent. The food is usually served quickly and the portions are pretty decent. Also, I like their new Mexican burgers which are $6 I think. This is an authentic Mexican rest and the best that I have found in BCS. The food is very food and the prices are decent although I wished they had not raised them. I would give this place 5 stars but the service does kinda suck. It can be hard to get a refill here and I don't understand why. The place is small but the waitresses seem to think their tip is automatic. They are usually just sitting around. The food however is worth the price, I am always happy with the taste and portion that I am served. Don't order take out. They completely messed up my taco order and shorted me 2 tacos. They clearly put baking powder in their eggs to make them expand compromising on the taste. So I've been to this place about three times now and I have mixed opinions. The first time we went service was fantastic, food was great and filling (I ordered their chicken enchiladas and the green sauce they serve with their chips is sooo good), and the price was reasonable. So I decided to come back for their chicken enchiladas but that next visit was not so great. I asked for chicken enchiladas but was given cheese enchiladas instead as well was my friend. I'm sure the miscommunication occurred between our server and us because she seemed like she was having a slightly hard time understanding us and chicken and cheese can easily be mixed up so I wasn't really that upset. We were in a rush to go see a movie afterwards so we didn't ask for a new plate of chicken enchiladas bc that would take more time to cook. But I wasn't feeling the cheese enchiladas and ended up not even finishing my plate. I get that these types of things happen often but maybe if servers can read back the orders next time this mistake can be prevented. I decided to give the place another chance and ordered chicken enchiladas to go bc I think their chicken enchiladas are some of the better ones in the area and they came out really good once again. Absolutely awful!! We eat Mexican food several times a week, sometimes at home and sometimes out. We have had many great meals at other establishments and a few average meals too but this was beyond disappointing. The nachos we ordered had no flavor and our burritos were saturated in a cheese sauce that looked and tasted like it came from a can. It reminded us of the cheap nacho sauce they serve at ballpark concessions over hot dogs. When I told our waitress i would like to speak to a manager she said the manager wasn't there and would not be back for a long time. I asked her to at least take off the price of my meal since I tried to eat it but couldn't and she said she didn't have the power to do that. She did tell me to leave my name and number and the manager would contact me when she returned. So I paid for the meal and tipped the waitress (trying to give her the benefit of the doubt) and never received a phone call. Avoid this place at ALL COST! read more

I used to be a very happy customer with Coco Loco. I have been a loyal customer for year. Lately, their customer service has been less than satisfactory and tonight was the final straw. I waited with my mother, 2 young children, and husband for 40 minutes (my mother an hour because she ordered before we arrived) and we did not even have our drinks given to us. There were 2 groups that sat down after us and they got refills while we were still waiting for our drinks. My mother ordered nachos and after an hour, she asked if her order was ready. The answer from the waitress was yes and she walked off. Sadly, this has been typical of them lately. They once brought my husband and myself the same order of food but my order was missing items that he had. Another time, I was brought the completely wrong order. Another time, I was being spoken to in Spanish after I explained I wanted to speak in English, they refused my request and continued to speak to me in Spanish the whole time. Once, I ordered bean and cheese breakfast tacos and when I picked up my order, the cheese and beans were not even cooked. They have become lazy, rude, and uncaring about customers. It is finally time to go somewhere else. I would rather pay more for less quality but better customer service elsewhere. read more
