After reading the long list of great reviews about COD, I decided to go here for Dine LA. The first courses were tiny: I had just a single piece of bluefin tuna with uni on top and my boyfriend had two shrimp dumplings. We both found these courses to be relatively lackluster. The second courses were more substantial in size (I had the Hokkadio scallop sashimi which I thoroughly enjoyed and my boyfriend had the grilled octopus which he said was just okay). For my main course, I had the uni pasta which was quite large and absolutely delicious. My boyfriend got the U-10 sea scallops and was disappointed because it only included two scallops. All things considered, I feel like I would have had a 5-star experience had I not been eating off the Dine LA menu. I had the opportunity to meet the restaurant owner Marcus back in October during my stay in West Hollywood. I always judge a restaurant by the personality and hospitality the owner shows his customers. I have to say I am a HUGE FAN of COD and MARCUS. This is indeed a gem of West Hollywood. The hospitality of the restaurant owner himself was just theicing on the cake. The space is beautiful and huge. Great homey feel (which isn't something you find very often in busy Weho). The food was ALL delicious. Where else in LA can you find such a wide variety of food - especially during COVID times. The fish and sushi was amazing and so fresh. I'm an avid sushi eater and will only go to the best restaurants with the the freshest fish that gets flown in. Don't even think, just go!!! You won't regret going here. We started with the lovely Foley Chardonnay and some ginger beer. We ordered edamame prepared with garlic and butter which was yummy and very garlicky! We also ordered the albacore at was very flavorful and fresh. We ordered the spicy tuna on crispy rice which was so good that we got another order. The crab toast was also delicious. The cold green beans were crispy and well-flavored with garlic. We also had the salmon which was well-cooked served with asparagus. We were all pretty dumbfounded at the final bill, as we definitely had a good amount to eat, an adult beverage, and dessert. In this area of town, you'd assume that would at least be a good $40/person, but COD proved to be an economical and delicious choice! We had the hamachi ceviche (really solid, but no standout flavors), shishito peppers (can never go wrong!), truffled green beans (need I say more?), spicy tuna on crispy rice (never a bad idea) and the garlic noodles (the smell of this dish is intoxicating and you would have to be suffering from a serious sinus infection not to order it after stepping foot in this restaurant!). The garlic noodles were top notch. We also ordered the seafood fried rice with shrimp, fish, crab (everything it said it was). We opted for the least exciting dessert (in my opinion) on their menu...the bread pudding and it was fine, but I recommend getting crazy and ordering the yuzu creme brulee or Okinawa Purple Yam. I usually scoff when people write reviews and dock off stars for a restaurant's service, but honestly this place has changed my mind completely. Based off service alone, I would give this place 1 star. The servers looked overwhelmed the ENTIRE time, running up and down stairs and doubling up as bartenders. We came here for DineLA and there were long lag times between each course & certain dishes came out lukewarm (as they have obviously been sitting around) - the service affected our entire experience. My biggest advice- come here at off-peak dining hours & your experience will be much better than mine. Comprehensive DineLA review based off the four dishes my table had: * Course 1: Scallop carpaccio- decent three pieces * Course 2: Uni on top of tuna - Do not get this, the tuna was stringy. Opt for the Grilled Octopus instead. * Course 3: Sea Bass (Best entree out of the items we ordered). Do not get the Wagyu (it was plain & needed to be seasoned better- aka at least some salt at the very least!) Uni Pasta was decent & came with some shaved truffle. Would have liked to taste more Uni, but overall happy with this. * Course 4: Chocolate Lava cake - decent. Nice gooey center with vanilla ice cream. Problem was that the ice cream was melted and the lava cake was not hot enough (evidently the servers had forgotten about this dish & it had been sitting around). The food bumped the rating up to a 3. Would I eat here again based off my experience? Probably not. Advice to management: Hire more staff. Rich, decadent and flavorful, we were fork jousting for another taste. Yes, expensive and it's fresh. You don't want to mess with bargain seafood folks. Believe my tummy when I tell you this. UNI PASTA: it's pricey, but it is so worth it. It's creamy and not fishy at all. This was probably my favorite dish out of all that I tried and I don't even like uni! Do yourself a favor and treat yo self. CALAMARI: the calamari here was perfectly crispy with a good breading to seafood ratio. It was seasoned so well that I didn't even have to dip it. The whole table loved it. GARLIC NOODLES: These were pretty good but definitely less memorable than the first two. One is probably good to split with 2 or 3 people depending on how much you order. SEAFOOD FRIED RICE: I didn't think the fried rice here had enough flavor. It was bland and it made me wish I had a bottle of sriracha to spice it up. Found this gem after yelping restaurants near me while at Beverly center. It's a short walk from Bc. I arrived minutes after 5p when they first opened. I was immediately greeted and given a perfect window seat. My food arrived within minutes of ordering and EVERYTHING WAS DIVINE. my waitress Amanda was very attentive, I never had to find her, and it was overall a nice experience. By 6:45p it was getting crowded, and the place is not very big so make reservations. Only "ding" is the bathrooms need a little attention. This was a pretty decent happy hour spot. First of all I have to say I'm in love with restaurants that offer small plates. There's nothing better than getting to sample a multitude of tasty dishes alongside your pals. COD offered a variety of dishes featuring items from both land and sea. Some of my faves were the crispy garlic brussel sprouts, crispy pork belly, and albacore crudo. I'm not the biggest fan of uni but I did enjoy their truffle uni pasta. All of the food was priced well for the happy hour. Now on to some disappointing things. The waitstaff was short the night I went (only one waitress for the entire restaurant!). Needless to say it did take a while for her to come back around to us when we needed something. Of course she did her best with the circumstance. Also, the restaurant itself had a distinct fishy scent. If you're sensitive to strong odors I'd think twice about dining here. Drinks were okay but felt a little watered down. Nowhere did they state it was going to a limited menu. Considering its Valentines Day, I get it. Make it more efficient to turn the tables. We arrived at 6:30, and it was not crowded. Service was slow as molasses. The limited menu was a joke. Not only was it limited, portions were small. Common 3 oysters, 2 crappy dumplings, small Chilean sea bass and desert should not have been $70. My daughter got cheesecake for desert which was a joke. Small and thin. I had to wait 15 mins to get my desert after both my daughter and wife got their desert. Yes you can make an excuse that you are understaffed. But if that is the case, take reservations accordingly. Went here last night with a group of 10 for a birthday, and it was one of the worst service experiences I've ever witnessed. The only reason I'm giving 3 stars instead of 1 star is because the food was pretty good, and I realize that staffing is probably challenging during COVID times. I worked in restaurants for 4 years, so I have a lot of empathy for servers, but there were still so many bad parts about our dining experience that could have been prevented. We had an 8:30pm reservation and didn't end up leaving until nearly 11:30pm, but we would have liked to have left an hour earlier. It took our entire party of 10 going downstairs to the bar to get our check from our server, who was apparently also a manager. One of the girls in our party never got her salmon during the meal, the only item she ordered, and was given it in a box at the end of the night. And we were still charged full price for it. Other problems: -several of us ordered 4-course "Dine LA" meals and several courses were brought to the table out of order -none of us who ordered the "Dine LA" dinners received our dessert items, yet we realized after leaving the restaurant that we were still charged for two $10 sorbets -there were periods of time longer than 20 minutes during the middle of dinner, where our server was nowhere to be found -we tried ordering more drinks, some of which never came and some we just never were able to order because our server wasn't around At the end, some drinks ended up getting taken off the bill, but not enough to make up for everything else mentioned above. My advice to management would be to schedule more servers than you think you need. Having two servers in the entire restaurant on a busy Friday night when you know you have at least one 10-person reservation is asking for problems. read more

For $153 before tip this is what we got: The oysters were average. Nothing special but not bad. They were described as large but were medium to small and not the freshest tasting. Appetizers: Scallops carpaccio: good flavor but very small serving size. 3 very thin slices with no accompaniment other than a few micro greens. Shrimp and chive dumpling: this was 2 bite size gyoza similar in flavor and quality to grocery store bought frozen gyoza. Not what I expected when described as dumplings and certainly not the quality one would expect. 2nd course: Grilled octopus: this was about 4 bite sized pieces of octopus with very nice flavor in a small salad of greens and black beans that didn't seem to serve any purpose but to be a filler. The octopus itself was good though. Sushi sampler: 3 pieces of nigiri sushi that was about on par with what you get at Ralph's. Mains: Uni pasta: the star dish of the night. Very good uni sauce in perfectly cooked pasta. Could be elevated with truffles or maybe some shellfish though. Sea bass in miso sauce: perfect cooked sea bass over greens but sort of ruined by some overpowering honey mustard?? Sauce. Definitely not miso like the menu stated and not right. for this delicate flavored fish. Dessert: A scoop of what was supposed to be raspberry sorbet but was actually an orange creamsicle flavor? Pretty laughable. Chocolate lava cake: mediocre lava cake with vanilla ice cream. Not bad not good. Service: Understaffed. Inattentive and impersonal. Couldn't get a refill of my water in the two hours we spent eating there even after asking. Also when we walked in with a reservation we were just quickly told to take a seat. They never asked my name or directed us to a table. Kind of odd especially at this price point. Overall decent food but not worth a return trip. read more

My friend threw a birthday lunch for her fiance here for 25 people and we got the entire upstairs area to ourselves. All the food was SO fresh and delicious and the service was exceptional. My favorite dishes were the noodle dishes, namely the uni pasta and the garlic noodles! They really went out of their way to make sure that we had a good time and were very attentive to our needs, even though we were such a big group. We were able to fully appreciate the bar area as well as the outside patio area. I really recommend this place for large group gatherings! So this place is like a higher level version of EMC. Seems like all the dishes are prepared with more attention to detail and the service is more professional. For example, their uni pasta has black truffles in it. Not exactly the freshest truffles in the world, but it seems they are trying to do everything a little better. One thing that's great is definitely the live uni. It's prepared elegantly with the uni scooped out with the utmost surgeon-like care that's layered on top of a banana leaf that covers the spiny alien-like husk underneath. Funny anecdote, apparently there was some guy who once ordered thirteen live unis in one sitting according to our waiter. I find it rather hilarious and shocking that there is someone out there who likes uni more than I do. OMG what a perfect, delectable dining experience!!! FOOD: 5 STARS SERVICE: 5 STARS VALUE: 4.5 STARS My friend and I came here for dinner last night and we were just blown away by everything. We made a reservation at 6:45pm and it's a good thing we did because the restaurant filled up as the night went on! Anyways, we arrived early enough to have our choice of table, although it didn't make a difference after the restaurant filled up because we were basically neck to neck with other diners. The only major downside of the night. After we sat down, our server came by to say hi and to introduce a trainee who was shadowing her for the night. She took our drink orders, and then came back to explain the fish and other seafood specials one by one - datum, that's dedication! We ordered six dishes to share: the Hokkaido scallop carpaccio, kale salad, clam chowder, grilled squid, uni truffle pasta, and the seabass special. And...Every dish was delicious!!! The scallops were so fresh and buttery - I only wish there were more! The kale salad with shallot was tangy and really hit the spot. I asked for the almonds and blue cheese on the side and they were happy to accommodate my request, unlike some other similarly trendy restaurants in LA that are snooty and refuse to change their menu, even for allergy requests (I'm looking at you, Lukshon & Broken Spanish). The clam chowder was maybe the best I've ever had - no joke. Puts the chowders in San Fran to shame. We could definitely tell from the consistency that it was homemade. So rich and creamy and it was definitely cream based (not flour based), which I feel is why it was not still not lumpy unlike a lot of other chowders I've had. The only thing I could've done without is the potatoes - they were still a bit undercooked. The grilled squid was cooked perfectly and still super tender when it was served. It was served in atop a bed of black beans and this mystery sauce that could possibly be juice from the beans but it was delicious and that's all that matters, haha. The sea bass marinated in miso was quite possibly the highlight of the night. My friend thought that the miso was so amazing that it actually overpowered the flavor of the sea bass itself, but I thought it complemented and in fact accentuated the natural aromas of the seabass. It is served atop a bed of spinach and the sauces from the miso and the fish made it so delectable that even Popeye would've gobbled it up in a heartbeat. The uni truffle pasta is their signature dish, so we had to try it, especially since it has two of my favorite things - uni and truffle. I was slightly underwhelmed by this dish - it is a rather small plate and there sadly was not much truffle. The flavors are on point and it is super rich and carb-y so if you need something that will fill you up this will do the trick. But I think the uni pasta at the District by Hannah Ahn is still the best I've had in LA. For dessert, we wanted to try the chocolate lava cake (substitute vanilla ice cream for green tea), which is not on the menu, but alas, due to miscommunication, we were only served the green tea ice cream and didn't get to try the actual cake. Oh well...we were already stuffed at this point so next time! Ok, so this has been a really long review but to say the least, the dining experience was exceptional!! I was really impressed by the service too, especially how accommodating our server Linda was. It's a breath of fresh air after having run into so many pretentious establishments and chefs in LA.
