Food (Smoked Salmon Toast & Matcha Latte)
    Kristina A.

Visited: 1/27/26 Parking: This place has no designated parking lot, and street parking is pretty limited, so keep that in mind before you go. I ended up parking a few blocks away and walking about four minutes to get there. Atmosphere: They offer seasonal menu items each month, which is a fun touch and gives you something new to try if you visit often. The shop itself is very popular and gets crowded, so expect some noise and possibly a short wait for your order, although the line moved fairly quickly when I went. They do have Wi-Fi, so it can still work as a study spot. One thing to note is that the music inside is very loud. I couldn't hear my name being called when my drink was ready, so I didn't pick it up in time. Either it was tossed or someone else grabbed it, but the staff kindly made me a new matcha latte, which I really appreciated. If you plan to study or need a quieter environment, you will probably want noise-canceling headphones. The booth I sat at had an outlet, but it did not work at all. It might have just been that specific one, but it is something to keep in mind if you need to charge your devices. Utensils: There is a self-serve utensil station with metal spoons and forks as well as plastic ones. They also have cup lids, straws, napkins, and a designated bin for used utensils, which was very convenient and well organized. Order: Smoked Salmon Toast ($15): 8.5/10 It came with a generous amount of toppings, so even though the price is on the higher side, it felt slightly worth it because of how loaded it was. Matcha Latte ($7): 8/10 It was really good and exactly what I needed for my study session. The latte art on top was also a nice touch! You can get it iced or hot, but I ordered it hot. That probably enhanced the flavor, so I would need to try the iced version to really judge the quality of the matcha. Bathroom: The bathroom requires a code, so you just have to ask the staff. It was a bit dirty when I went, but it was close to closing time, so that might have been part of the reason. The shop also had a slight bathroom smell at that time.

Cozy and busy coffee spot, particularly on a Sunday. Their breakfast burrito really hits the spot and they make a really nice latte.

Been a patron since opening and this spot has remained a great neighborhood staple! Have to commend Jonathan for being a renaissance man of this cafe... delicious and beautiful latte work, making sure the patio and interior keeps polished and clean, and even keeping the vibe upbeat and welcoming. It so refreshing to see someone so passionate about their work and service. Yummy single sourced coffee and delicious creative lattes just a walk away from home. Food is served warm and beautiful presented for a nice morning or afternoon bite. Pastries are always an exciting treat for the kiddos too.

In a very crowded area, but there is free street parking. Ambince was chill as it was around 6pm and the music wasn't too loud. It is a work friendly cafe so there is a charging station in every other table I believe. The staff were very friendly! I got the matcha latte that had a fishy taste... it seemed like low-quality as it didn't taste well. Though the sweetness was just right. I got the brisket burrito thinking it was going to be a burrito- it wasn't. It was a bowl of veggies and couldn't find the brisket.. My friend got the vanilla latte and the fried chicken sandwich which he thought were both alright. Throughout my 3 hour stay, it smelled like pee time to time. I'm really bummed as I have been looking forward to visit this cafe, but did not have a good experience.

One of the worst coffees Iv had .. watered down and doesn't taste like anything close to a cup of coffee for $4.50 on top of that while waiting for my drink one of the baristas was sitting on the countertop in front of all the customers! Never going back

    The outside

I recently visited Commissary Coffee and overall it was just okay. The shop itself has a nice atmosphere and a good location, but the coffee was a bit watery and didn't have the strong flavor I was expecting. For the price, I honestly expected better quality. The experience at the counter also felt a little off since the cashier didn't seem very friendly or welcoming. Service wasn't terrible, just not very warm. On the positive side, the place is clean and has a nice vibe to sit and relax for a while. It's not a bad café, but there's definitely room for improvement.

Lil breakfast burrito w avocado and lavender matcha with vanilla cold foam

Food was really good but their lavender matcha with vanilla cold foam was amazing. Finished the whole drink which never happens I always leave it halfway. Shout it to the girl with the glasses that made my drink. Was gonna get another but I had to leave lol. 10/10 drink!! Nice place to just sit down and relax

So much charm and flavor at this cafe! Hidden in Kenneth village, this was such a great find! A few things that set them apart, is how fresh everything seemed. I mean, the whole place smelled like the fresh churro buns! They called everyone by name- they remember all their customers! It has a homey feel, yet very spacious (great for studying or work) and decorated beautifully. I ordered the veggie burrito and the churro buns and both were delicious! Coffee was fresh and I believe brewed in house. I'll def be back next time I'm in the area!

This place was crowded and we had to wait in line for about 15 minutes. The employees seemed to have a nice system in place to knock out the orders. My friend and I ordered the Mocha Latte, I had mine iced and my friend got it hot. They served the drinks fairly quick. I would say the consensus is that the latte wasn't anything spectacular for the price and the mocha they used was cheap chocolate. We wouldn't come back unless we are in the area and even then, there probably are better options to try out.

Pretty good coffee, yummy food/pastries, and really great servers. The vibes in there are good. I think if you're stopping just for a coffee fix it's not necessarily "top tier" choice, but if you're going to sit with friends or to work or study it's an awesome spot.

Coffee commissary is what you would imagine a coffee shop in LA to be. The Glendale location is in an old town area of small shops. The shop is really hip, with very fashionable people. One thing I like about this place is ample seating both outside and inside. It is a cool place to get some work done or get something to eat & drink coffee. I mainly came here to try the breakfast burritos and get my coffee fix. One cool thing is you can get breakfast in the pm. I got the brisket burrito, I would say about 4.5 stars. I liked the rub of the brisket that gives it flavor, you could go without salsa if you really wanted to. The tortilla chips that come with it are delicious and fresh. This place breaks the mold as far as coffee shops having good food. Few coffee shops can pull it, but Coffee Commissary does. Now for the coffee how good is it? I would say not top tier best of LA good, but good. I had a Cubano cinnamon latte, which was good. My wife had a Vanilla latte which, taste more like a sweet latte. Overall I think it's a four to five star place depending upon how picky you are when it comes to coffee. The food, seating and ambiance and pretty good coffee makes coffee commissary a great place to visit.

    Iced Matcha Latte

I ordered an iced Matcha latte, and usually it's good and vibrant green but this last time I ordered the matcha looked like a chai. I even asked them what it was bc the color was so off but it looks like they were using matcha that was old and oxidized so it was no longer the green color it naturally is but instead a dull creamish color. I didn't let myself judge it on the color but once I tasted it, it was so gross. I couldn't drink it and ended up throwing it away. Only giving it 3 stars because I've had their matcha before multiple times, otherwise I would've given it a 1 star. Hoping it was just a fluke but I would recommend being wary of the matcha since it looks like they use old or expired matcha powder

My boyfriend stumbled upon this gem of a coffee shop one morning and was so excited to take me. Parking gets a little dense depending on what time you go-- weekend morning's... good luck! We typically park across the street in the parking lot next to the bakery. There's typically a line out the door (expected because this place has amazing coffee and breakfast items!) the line moves fairly quickly and the wait for your order will take from 5-15 minutes depending on how busy it is. This cute hipster coffee shop has seating areas but be prepared to possibly sit outdoors. It can get crowded! That's the only downfall about this place. Even on busy weekend mornings the wait is worth it!! I usually get an iced American, amazing flavor without tasting watered down. My boyfriend always gets the Chai Latte, it has the perfect amount of spiced flavor. On the weekends before 3pm they serve the best Brisket Hash, me and my boyfriend share the bowl! The potatoes are so crispy-- never soggy. The brisket is seasoned well, eggs are still runny, the hollandaise sauce is my favorite. It adds such a nice contrast to the food.

Ask the Community - Coffee Commissary

    Does Coffee Commissary accept EBT?

no offended tho, this shouldn't be a place for EBT ( Food assistance for in needed). This is a fancy place for who could through some cash gratis to baristas who are working their assoff in minimum wages.

Do they have different sizes for their coffee?

    Yes two different sizes

Do they offer gluten free bread?

No (the only option is gluten free chocolate cake per the barista)

Are we allowed to sit outside even after hours?

Probably, just depends on the neighbors. And if they bring in the tables and chairs. Either way, there's a built in bench on the street facing sidewalk.

Unfortunately, the experience has been consistently disappointing. Walking into a coffee shop should feel welcoming. Instead, most visits feel cold and uncomfortable. There is rarely a hello, welcome, smile, or thank you from the staff. The overall attitude often feels bothered or uninterested, almost like customers are an inconvenience rather than appreciated guests. The coffee itself is decent at times, inconsistent at others, but customer service is what keeps people coming back. I truly hope the owner and management take this feedback seriously and focus on creating a more welcoming environment. A simple greeting, smile, and positive attitude go a long way. There are many coffee shops people can choose from, and feeling appreciated matters just as much as the product itself. I wanted to support this business, but after many visits and the same experience over and over again, I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Took a few minutes to get my drink but as soon as I saw it, it looked absolutely delish! And it was. Super creamy, still on the sweeter side but the creaminess is what I loved most about it. One thing I appreciated immediately was the parking. There is plenty of street parking, a parking structure directly across the street, and additional parking nearby, so getting there was surprisingly easy. As soon as we walked in, the owner, who was sitting near the entrance, warmly welcomed us. We initially started walking toward the cozy booth section in the back, but were told that area is reserved for dinner service and wasn't open... We weren't the only ones confused, as another guest came in shortly after and tried to sit there as well. That left us deciding between a few café tables downstairs, outdoor seating, or the upstairs loft. We first tried upstairs, but there were only a couple of two-top tables available. One was occupied by guests working on laptops, and the seating felt a little close together. The remaining tables were reserved for larger parties, so we ended up heading back downstairs. One of the available booths faced the restroom, which isn't my favorite, but I simply sat on the opposite side and it worked out just fine. Once we got settled, everything improved. Our server was friendly, attentive, and happy to offer recommendations. I ordered the French baguette turkey sandwich, while we also tried the spicy chicken sandwich, which both the server and the owner highly recommended. The owner even mentioned it's what he personally eats almost every day, and I can see why, it was delicious. We also ordered fries to share along with two hot lattes: a chai tea latte and a mocha. Both coffee drinks were excellent and easily some of the highlights of our meal. The atmosphere is charming and cozy, making it a great place to relax, catch up with friends, or enjoy a coffee date. Before dessert, the owner recommended the mini pancakes and the waffles, with ice cream. They both looked great, but I've had similar desserts at several other cafés recently, so I wanted to try something different. I ordered the brownie with ice cream instead, and I'm so glad I did. It was rich, fresh, and absolutely delicious. One thing the owner emphasized was that they use fresh ingredients without preservatives and focus on quality. After our meal, I believe it. Everything tasted fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and made with care. Our total for two people, including tip, came to about $120. It's a little on the pricier side for a café, but you're also paying for the ambiance, quality ingredients, attentive service, and the overall experience. Overall, we had a very enjoyable visit. My only suggestion would be to make the seating situation a little clearer for first-time guests, since several of us naturally gravitated toward the closed dining section. Other than that, the welcoming hospitality, quality food, excellent coffee, and relaxing atmosphere made this a place I'd happily return to.
