Went from one of my favorite places to visit while in town to now the worst experience, service and I might as well have been eating a salt lick for breakfast. And gave them the opportunity to fix it and they shoved my food to one side of the plate and gave me a side bowl of eggs and said "here you go - there's salt and pepper over there and you can fix them up how you want". Service folks...learn the forgotten art of good old fashioned service. Very disappointing. read more

Coffee Underground was sure a sweet little surprise! My boyfriend, his parents and I had a 40 min. wait at a restaurant and ducked into Coffee Underground to kill some time, but after a while, we didn't want to leave! They sat us in the back room where there are cozy curtained booths full of silent, happy people on computers. The table service was nice and there were so many choices from beer to smoothies that it took us forever to order. It was really cool and a place I will want to hit up again next time I'm in Greenville. Heck, if I lived there I'd be there all the time, just working on my laptop, chillin' and enjoying the atmosphere. read more

Hey! Whatsup? Coffee Underground is kewl. They have coffee and espresso good enough to satisfy my bigs, who are coffee snobs from Seattle. They also have delicious treats like fresh strawberry cake and custom breakfast sandwiches. It's underground and wooden and pretty and looks like the coffeeshop in the old Elliot Bay Books in Seattle. Dr. Meesie likes to go there to work on his fussy laptop and there's always an outlet available. But cake and sandwiches are going to make him fat. The only thing that's assey is the music. Seriously, solo piano Muzak versions of 80s ballads? Can't you just at least play some quality, mellow classical, jazz, or ambient music instead of this elevator stuff? Oh and it's fall now. I love everything about Coffee Underground--the comfortable seating, the community feel, and the variety of foodstuffs offered--except for the coffee itself! I still frequent the cafe, but I often spring for a cider instead of coffee because I just can't stomach it (and this from a coffee lover!). Fantastic coffee, great food, amazing desserts, and fun events! Coffee Underground, (which is located on Cofee Street!), is literally underground, so you will need to descend some steps to get there, but it is so worth it! The staff is super friendly, and very helpful if you need some suggestions on what to order. I've never had a bad coffee experience here, and this time I decided to branch out and try the food. I had a black bean burger and sweet potato fries - yum! The atmosphere is comfy and relaxing, despite the underground location, and they do have free Wi-Fi if you need a nice place to work or study. The food and drink prices are nice and cheap, and the shows that they put on in the back are sometimes free! If you find yourself downtown and in need of a pick-me-up, I'd highly suggest stopping by! read more

I'm not so sure what happened with Jeff O., but my wife and I have never once had a problem with just ordering a cup of coffee and sitting down to chill out and soak up the cozy atmosphere and some great conversation at Coffee Underground. But great coffee in the front of the house is just a start. Enter weekend mornings and BRUNCH. If you've found yourself wanting a great place to go for brunch on the weekend and haven't been to Coffee Underground's Red Room, then give it a shot. They've got a pretty good selection of omelettes and other breakfast favorites and they're served with a pair of the most delicious whole grain pancakes and about 1/4 cup of cheese grits (or, if you prefer, you can substitute fruit like my wife does - she's not a fan of grits). Admittedly, I've found that from time-to-time what is printed on the menu isn't exactly what ends up on the plate, but I'm a guy that's open to the element of surprise sometimes. What matters to me is that it always tastes great and goes well with a Peanut Butter Mocha or just about any other coffee beverage they have. The service is always friendly, too, and if we've not been in for a few weeks, we certainly are made to feel that we've been missed. You don't get that at Starbucks or Denny's or Dunkin Donuts, folks. That's Southern Hospitality for ya. One day, we may even try to take the kids in. For now, the signs posted everywhere have really deterred us from doing so...and have given us an excuse to spend some time alone to ourselves without them, which has its own benefits. read more

If a tornado were to hit Greenville, I know where I would go to have coffee while the above-land disasted touched down: Coffee Underground. The name even conveniently helps you out! Even in Austin, we do not have this kind of joint; CU is in a league of its own. Greenville is certainly gaining hipster status in my eyes. This eatery/roastery/cafe/restaurant/venue offers everything you need. They roast their own beans, you can have a sit-down meal, and they even have bands come through. I went in for brunch, and I was a little weirded out because I had to sit inside of the dining area even though I just wanted a quick meal. Oh well, the quite ambiance was nice. I went with the stuffed French toast. It was a huge portion for $7.50: 4 pieces of 2 slices of cranberry bread sandwiching cream cheese and apples. I would have preferred less cream cheese and more honey in it. It was slightly tangy, which took away from the apples, and the thickness smothered the apples. I also would have liked thinner apples. The thick-cut apples were too large and unevenly dispersed. Nonetheless, a solid brunch offering. I enjoyed my Guatamalan coffee: bitter and sharp, but clean nonetheless. I was in Greenville from out of town and needed a place to work from, and the Yelp reviews said this was the place. The place is literally underground, right off Main and Coffee Street. The barista was really friendly, and the chocolate chip scone I ordered was tasty. My warning: If you're looking for internet, as I was, this might not be your place. They use a system in which the barista hands you a code that provides two hours of internet. I thought the idea was innovative, but it didn't work at all; I just couldn't connect. I love the cozy feel of Coffee Underground but it is actually a rather large space. I recommend the latte with Bailey's Irish Cream if you have time to sit and enjoy it..and let the buzz wear off. This place really did live up to its reputation portrayed by some of the locals I spoke with. In the interior is real chill, exactly what I like in a good coffee shop. We stopped here passing through on a road trip, attempting to get a feel for Greenville SC by way of record stores and coffee shops. While the staff was perfectly nice, I found this place to be disappointing based on the reviews. The ambiance felt more like a hotel bar than a coffee shop...which didn't match up with the equally bizarre jestery font on the menu outside. The big offense? My drink had a super strange aftertaste to it that made me stop sipping on it halfway through. Agh. I hate giving negative reviews, but in this instance, I've gotta be that guy. I really want to like Coffee Underground. The location is awesome, the stage hosting almost nightly shows is awesome, the atmosphere is awesome. But... I just can't say I enjoy coming here. Every time I've visited we've been forced to take table service. If I'm honest, I've never gone into a coffee shop wanting table service- the casual experience of counter service is one of the things that makes visiting coffee shops so appealing to me. If Coffee Underground is striving to be more of a cafe than a coffee shop, table service may make sense. The drinks and food I've gotten here have been OK, but sadly it is no longer really on my radar for coffee when downtown. read more

Absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced at a coffee shop. We came in with a friend who is vegan we ordered a vegetarian wrap and asked for no dairy as well (on the menu it doesn't even list it as having cheese). when it came out it had shredded cheese and we went up and asked about it and got told (very rudely) that wrap doesn't come with cheese and it only had carrots. We brought it back to the table apologizing til we looked closer into the wrap and it had both cheese and carrots, once we went back up to let them know we heard whispering about "ugh they're back" I showed them the difference between the shredded cheddar cheese and the carrots and without an apology they said ok they'll be out in a second. the staff proceeded to talk crap about us while we wait saying we didn't say no cheese ( when just a second before they said it didn't come with cheese! and it was not listed anywhere and we said clearly no dairy). then when they brought out the new wrap it still had parmesan dill spread on it, so it was still uneatable. worst experience i've had don't recommend especially if you have any sort of eating restriction read more

I've been going to Underground with my family for the last 10 years and it a staple favorite for the coffee and strawberry cake, but unlike those things the furniture hasn't stood the test of time. Life keeps me from getting downtown much lately, which is a shame because I miss my writing jaunts to Coffee Underground. It has a great funky, rumpled vibe, with hand-me-down furniture and hand made decorations. Local artists are given wall space to share their creations. My sister visited recently so I was able to use that as an excuse for a visit. Thumbs up, as always from everyone who came along. I am actually not a coffee drinker, so I abuse the Black Tiger shake, which is delish and gives me that coffee buzz that I don't ever get to experience otherwise. I am kind of addicted to the croissant club platter. It does tend to get busy and crowded, but if you can isolate those pockets of time in which the rush subsides, it's great to just sit back and relax with your favorite drink. As a college student with work to do on a weeknight, having a comfortable environment with WiFi access and coffee is essential to productivity. But what if you can't have both? No coffee?!?! Even worse. No Wi-Fi. Though my tone thus far has been mellow-dramatic, I am quite upset with Coffee Underground. When attempting to connect to the WiFi, I originally was notified that I must make a minimum of a $2 purchase in order to receive a code. I took my receipt, which did surpass the $2 minimum, up to the counter and asked for the WiFi password. I was then told that they did not have WiFi. Skeptical, I began to look around. I returned to my seat as to not cause any disturbance, but I did have a look around. I counted 6 laptops out. So I have just been told that I have no access to WiFi as a paying customer, and I am supposed to believe that 6 people are using their laptops with no internet? When's the last time anybody pulled out a laptop to strictly use Microsoft Word. Some of my textbooks are even online. This is when I became upset. I am now left with no WiFi and my hands tied. Coffee Underground has great coffee and I have never had an issue here before, but why do I feel like I am being lied too? I'm not happy at all with the interaction and hope that a coffeeshop will recognize not having WiFi as a major flaw. I will not be able to risk studying here any longer, not knowing if WiFi is even a reasonable request. read more

Coffee and Atmosphere don't get any better than this. I bring my laptop and hop on the Free Wireless Internet , drink coffee, and eat foods all evening long. If you are a coffee fan you have to stop by! Our first time stopping in and it was great, we will be back!! We got the Mediterranean plate for an appetizer, split a hot turkey and apple sandwich and got a brownie for dessert. Everything was delicious! We split the sandwich and asked for the brie only on half as I'm lactose intolerant and they were happy to do that. Our waitress Jess was awesome and super nice. When we asked for the brownie sundae for dessert she offered to put the ice cream and whipped cream in a different bowl so we could share without us even asking. So sweet! read more

I loooooooved this little place! I was in Greenville recently for a conference and in need of caffeine and sugar. Also, it was kind of late when I needed this. Thankfully, this little spot was open. It's pretty large for an indie coffee shop and has a lot of seating. It was also clean - always a plus. The service was great - prompt, personable and responsive. And most importantly, the coffee was delish and even better was the big piece of strawberry cake I had. Whoever made that cake put their foot in it. I haven't had cake that good in a long time. It was fresh, moist and the frosting was fantastic. It was so good that I returned the next morning and had an equally great experience. During the second go round I had the best cinnamon roll I have had in a while and another great latte. Today - I am doing Zumba to work off all those calories. It was totally worth it.
